Leon Marchand called it a "perfect week" after winning his fourth gold of the Paris Olympics with an emphatic victory in the 200m individual medley on Friday in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

The Frenchman becomes the first male swimmer since American record-breaker Michael Phelps at Beijing 2008 to win four individual golds in single Games.

Marchand won in 1min 54.06sec, the second-fastest time in history and an Olympic record, with Britain's Duncan Scott taking silver and China's Wang Shun third.

It was another memorable night for the host nation at La Defense Arena with French President Emmanuel Macron among those in the crowd celebrating the latest night of glory for the 22-year-old poster boy.

"I don't think anything went wrong this week. It was just perfect," said a beaming Marchand after fans sang La Marseillaise.

Marchand had already pocketed golds in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke, along with the 400m individual medley, making him the clear favourite in Friday's race.

China's Wang, the defending champion, led after the opening butterfly leg&nbsp; but Marchand got himself in front during the backstroke.

He extended his lead with a strong breaststroke 50 before holding on to his advantage in the final, freestyle, leg as the crowd roared him towards the wall.

Marchand is trained by Phelps' former coach, Bob Bowman, and the American was searching for superlatives to describe the week's work from his swimmer.

"It was just a complete success in terms of the way I see things. He's just 100% successful. I'm so very proud of him. It takes a lot to be perfect," he said.

For Britain's Scott it was another silver to add to his collection -- he finished second to Wang in Tokyo and now has eight Olympic medals.

He said Marchand's impact on the sport was immeasurable.

"He's becoming a sort of global superstar now and he kind of runs France now, which is what we're hearing in the crowd," he said. "It's amazing, and the kid, he's loved it. You can see he's doing it with a smile on his face and the crowd's giving him so much energy, it's been amazing to witness it," he said.

The bad news for any rivals hoping that this is a one-off burst of glory in a home pool is that Marchand is already thinking towards 2028.

"It's not over for me. It's only the beginning. I'm really excited.... my next goal is LA."

He will also swim in Paris in two relays.

The rising temperatures in the French capital city had everyone struggling during the Paris Olympics 2024, with the Indian contingent present at the Olympic Village being no different. Considering the unavailability of air-conditioning service there, the Indian Sports Ministry sent 40 portable AC units for the athletes to be at ease, bearing the cost from their pocket.

The sources close to the information revealed the Sports Ministry made the ACs available to athletes inside the Games Village only after discussions with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the French Embassy.&nbsp;

“Taking into consideration the issues faced by athletes at the Olympic Games village because of the temperature and humidity in Paris, the Ministry of Sports decided to provide 40 ACs in the Games Village rooms where the Indian athletes are staying,” the source said during a chat with PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Paris and Chateauroux - the two main venues for the Olympics 2024, have witnessed temperatures touching 40 degrees Celsius. Even during the Men’s 50m Rifle 3-Positions final, all eight contesting finalists, including India’s Swapnil Kusale, who won the bronze medal, were sweating at the Chateauroux shooting range.

<h2>Own arrangements</h2>

Even before the Paris Games began, the organisers decided against providing AC services to the athletes to cut the carbon footprint at the event, leading to several contingents raising&nbsp;concerns about the weather here during the Olympics 2024.

Although the organising committee unveiled an underfloor cooling mechanism and built-in insulation to curb the rising temperatures inside the Village, the American contingent, unconvinced with the measures, travelled with their portable ACs.&nbsp;

The report also suggested that other contingents had acquired the AC services inside the Games Village, with the Indian contingent being the latest.

“The decision was taken early on Friday and the cost is being funded by the Ministry,” the unnamed source in the Sports Ministry said. “The ACs are plug-and-play units, and athletes have already started using them. It is expected that with this, they will have a more comfortable stay and get better rest, which is much needed for a good performance.”

A brilliant brace by Barcelona's Fermin Lopez helped fire Spain to a 3-0 win over Japan and a place in the semi-finals of the Olympic men's football on Friday, after a dominant Morocco outclassed the United States.

Lopez, a member of Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 squad, blasted in the opener with a left-foot strike from range in the 11th minute of the quarter-final against Japan in Lyon.

The 21-year-old midfielder struck again on 73 minutes with another goal of the highest quality as he controlled a Sergio Gomez corner before volleying in from the edge of the box, this time with his right foot.

Captain Abel Ruiz wrapped up the win late on after the Japanese defence failed to clear another Gomez corner.

Olympic champions in 1992 and silver medallists three years ago in Tokyo, Spain will now go to Marseille for a semi-final on Monday against Morocco, who were impressive 4-0 winners against the USA in Paris.

Morocco had the vast majority of a noisy and packed crowd at the Parc des Princes behind them and were simply too strong for their opponents.

Soufiane Rahimi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Ilias Akhomach and captain Achraf Hakimi added further goals in the second half, with another spot-kick, by Mehdi Maouhoub, wrapping up the win.

After topping their group ahead of Argentina, Morocco are looking like serious contenders to win gold in Paris on August 9.

The sizeable Moroccan community in France has turned out in big numbers over the last week to back their team, who came to the Games after winning last year's Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

<h2>France, Argentina set for showdown</h2>

They are a formidable side and the outcome never looked in doubt once Rahimi converted a penalty just before the half-hour mark after he had been fouled in the area by Nathan Harriel.

Rahimi, who plays in the United Arab Emirates and is one of Morocco's three overage players at the Olympics, is the tournament's top scorer with five goals in four games.

Morocco doubled their lead on 63 minutes. Abde Ezzalzouli produced a great piece of play on the left before picking out his fellow former Barcelona youngster Akhomach to finish at the near post.

Hakimi, playing on his Paris Saint-Germain home ground, ran through to make it 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining.

Substitute Maouhoub added another penalty in stoppage time after Harriel had been penalised for handball following a VAR review.

The remaining quarter-finals take place later Friday with Egypt playing Paraguay before hosts France, coached by Thierry Henry, take on two-time gold medallists Argentina in Bordeaux.

It will be the first meeting of the nations since Argentina players were recorded singing racist chants about their French counterparts as they celebrated winning the Copa America in mid-July.

FIFA announced that it would investigate the chants, which targeted France's star striker Kylian Mbappe among others and included racist and homophobic insults.

However, she did not stand tall in the R16 contest against her Chinese opponent and lost 21-19, 21-14 in what was a poor show by Sindhu’s standards. She gave a good account of herself in the opening game but&nbsp;ultimately lost&nbsp;the big points. Things did not pan out well in the second game too as she was&nbsp;poor in attack.

Andy Murray said he was retiring "on my terms" as his trophy-filled career came to an emotional end at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, closing another chapter on tennis's golden generation.

Taiwan's double world champion Lin Yu-ting, one of two boxers at the heart of a gender row, won her featherweight round of 16 bout against Uzbekistan's Sidora Turdibekova on points by unanimous decision at the Paris Olympics on Friday.

The 28-year-old Taiwanese, along with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif who won her round of 16 welterweight fight on Thursday against Italy's Angela Cariniin 46 seconds, have been in the spotlight of the gender row after being cleared to compete in the Olympics.

Both had been disqualified at the 2023 World Championships after failing International Boxing Association eligibility rules that prevent athletes with male XY chromosomes competing in women's events.

The boxing competition in Paris is run by the International Olympic Committee after it stripped the IBA's international recognition in 2023 over governance and finance issues, and the IOC has said the women have every right to compete in Paris.

The IOC said the IBA decision to disqualify the boxers last year was arbitrary and the main cause for the furore that has seen people like J&nbsp;K&nbsp;Rowling and Elon Musk voice their opposition to them competing in the Games.

Following Khelif's quick win on Thursday that had drawn the ire of Italian Primer Minister Giorgia Meloni, who said it was not a fight among equals given the Algerian's physical advantage, hundreds of media had gathered for Lin's fight.

But the Uzbek was not prepared to be easy prey to her opponent, only narrowly losing the first round and with one of judges even scoring the round in her favour.

The taller Lin, however, was never really threatened, and landed a big right in the second round that rattled Turdibekova.&nbsp;

With chants of "Uzbekistan" echoing through the North Paris Arena the Uzbek fighter tried to come back in the third but it was Lin who had the upper hand and got her Games' opening win.

Both fighters refused to talk to the press following their bout with the Uzbek passing past reporters in tears.

"It has been an objective since the start of the year to try and win the gold medal and now we have one match left to try and get it done," said Alcaraz. "I want to have fun in the final and do the business." Alcaraz broke again in the fourth and sixth games of the second set on his way to claiming a fourth successive win over the Canadian having lost the first three of the pair's series. "It was a very complete performance and I played at a very high level from start to finish," said Alcaraz. "I had very good feelings and sensations, I'm so happy." Paris Olympics 2024: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz creates history in thumping semis win over Felix Auger-Aliassime

Katie Ledecky launched her bid for a fourth straight Olympic 800m freestyle title Friday by beating Ariarne Titmus in the heats during a session marred by a Slovak athlete collapsing on the pool deck.

Canadian star Summer McIntosh was also back in La Defense Arena in the 200m medley as she seeks to further burnish her reputation, while Caeleb Dressel kickstarted his 100m butterfly defence.

American great Ledecky, who emphatically defended her 1500m title on Wednesday, came home in 8min 16.62sec.

Her chief rival Titmus, who came second in Tokyo, was third (8:19.87) in the same heat with the United States' Paige Madden second quickest.

Ledecky has already rewritten the history books in Paris with her 4x200m freestyle relay silver on Thursday making her the most decorated female Olympian swimmer with 13 medals, including eight gold.

It propelled her clear of fellow Americans Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin and Australia's Emma McKeon.

By winning the 1500m, she became the first woman swimmer to win gold at four Olympics.

And should she clinch the 800m, she will equal the most Olympic golds -- nine -- ever won by a woman athlete, matching former Soviet-era artistic gymnast Larisa Latynina.

"I mean, I've tried not to really think about it," Ledecky said of the records. "I'm just taking it one event at a time, and I know I have challenges in each of my events. So when all is said and done, I'll enjoy it.

"And I've certainly appreciated all the support and cheers that I've felt as I've gone through the week."

She has the 16 fastest 800m times ever recorded, but a chink appeared in her armour this year when she was beaten for the first time since 2010, by McIntosh.

But the Canadian is not contesting the event in Paris, leaving Titmus as her main roadblock.

<h2>Conscious</h2>

McIntosh, a decade younger than Ledecky, already has two golds and a silver and is gunning for more glory in the 200m medley, where she topped the timesheets in 2:09.90.

Slovakia's Tamara Potocka came last behind McIntosh and collapsed as she climbed out of the pool.

The 21-year-old, at her first Olympics, received medical attention and was carried out on a stretcher with an oxygen mask on.

"She's conscious but we are waiting for a medical update," organisers said.

Australia's Kaylee McKeown, who swam the fourth fastest time in history in June, cruised through her medley heat in 2:11.26 ahead of defending her 200m backstroke title on Friday evening.

Defending champion Dressel, who shattered the world record in Tokyo, was sixth fastest through the 100m butterfly heats in 50.83sec.

But it was the man who finished second behind him three years ago, Hungarian Kristof Milak, who set the pace, hitting the wall in 50.19sec.

Dressel and Milak are the only active swimmers to ever dip below 50 seconds.

The American, who won five gold in Japan and has one in the relay so far in Paris, faces a big day with the semis in the evening, after he dives in defend his 50m freestyle title.

"Feeling good, yep, here to race," he said.

In other action, the United States qualified first for the final of the mixed 4x100m medley relay ahead of Australia and China.

Along with the 50m fly and 200 backstroke finals, French superstar Leon Marchand is in action again later, with expectations high that he can win a fourth gold of the Games in the 200m medley.

The 22-year-old has already won the 400m medley, 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke titles.&nbsp;

Paris Olympics 2024: India's Manu Bhaker enters women's 25m pistol precision final; Esha Singh exits

For the first time in her Olympic career, ace India shuttler PV Sindhu returned home without a medal. Having already won two in the past two editions (bronze in Tokyo 2020 and silver in Rio 2016), Sindhu suffered a shocking defeat in the pre-quarters at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, going down in straight games (21-19, 21-14) to China’s He Bingjiao.

With her exit, India’s hopes of clinching a medal in the women’s singles came down crashing; however, Sindhu is not ending her glorious&nbsp;career here, as she vows to return but after a ‘much-needed’ break.

Reflecting on a painful and the ‘hardest loss of her career’, Sindhu took to the social media platform X, clearing the air on her future.&nbsp;

"Paris 2024: A Beautiful Journey but a Difficult Loss. This loss is one of the hardest of my career. It will take time to accept, but as life moves forward, I know I will come to terms with it," Sindhu wrote in her post on X.

Meanwhile, Sindhu entered this sporting spectacle overcoming a couple of tough years, where several injuries kept her grounded; however, despite all the challenges, she stood tall and made it to the R16 at her third straight Olympic Games.&nbsp;

She feels grateful for doing what she loves and takes immense pride in inspiring a generation watching her play at the Summer Games.

"The journey to Paris 2024 was a battle, marked by two years of injuries and long periods away from the game. Despite these challenges, standing here and representing my wonderful country at a third Olympics makes me feel truly blessed," Sindhu said.

"I'm incredibly fortunate to compete at this level and, even more importantly, to inspire a generation. Your messages have been a tremendous source of comfort during this time. My team and I gave everything we had for Paris 2024, leaving it all on the court with no regrets.

"Regarding my future, I want to be clear: I will continue, albeit after a small break. My body, and more importantly, my mind need it. However, I plan to carefully evaluate the journey ahead, finding more joy in playing the sport I love so very much,” she noted.

The 22-year-old bagged his first gold of the night after summoning a lung-bursting late charge to claim the 200m fly, and then just under two hours later showed incredible reserves of stamina to motor home in the 200m breaststroke.

The back-to-back golds made Marchand -- who won gold in the 400 individual medley earlier in the Games -- the first swimmer to win the 200 fly and breaststroke in the same Olympics.

The five-time world champion, little known outside the world of swimming before the Olympics, has become a national hero in the space of a week with his trio of golds.

"I've fulfilled a lot of dreams since I've been here. Doing this double was something I felt I could do. But to really do it, that's something else," he said. "Of course, I had a lot of doubts. Because everyone told me it wasn't possible," he said of the unprecedented double.

While the 15,000 crowd at the La Defense Arena belted out a rousing rendition of La Marseillaise during the medal ceremonies, a smiling Marchand looked calm as he soaked up the adulation.

"I'm just trying to keep going. I really enjoyed every moment of those two finals. It was really amazing for me to swim those," he said, after dethroning two defending champions.

<h2>'Tonight was amazing'</h2>

For as powerful, focused and technically gifted as he is when racing, the prodigy from Toulouse is a relaxed, chilled, individual out of the pool, a winning combination that has earned him the hearts of a nation.

In the breaststroke, the 22-year-old touched the wall in a time of 2min 5.85sec, a new Olympic record and the second fastest time of all-time.

Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook, the defending champion from Tokyo, finished with silver 0.94 seconds behind with Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands claiming bronze.

Remarkably the race was the first time Marchand has swum the 200 breaststroke in a major international competition but in his current form and with a deafening home crowd behind him, there was simply no stopping him as he led from start to finish.

But it was his astonishing victory in the butterfly which will live longest in the memory.

World record holder and defending champion Kristof Milak of Hungary led until the final lap when Marchand hunted him down.

The Frenchman produced a perfect turn, coming out of it with the momentum he needed to catch Milak and he did just that -- the moment he passed the Hungarian, midway through the final greeted with a guttural roar from the crowd.

Milak had no answer and the arena was on its feet as Marchand finished with a new Olympic record time of 1min 51.21sec.

"The 200 butterfly was crazy. I had a really good race strategy. I managed to stay fairly close to the favourite and I really managed to catch him...with the pool on fire. It was pretty crazy to experience that as a French swimmer. I'm so happy," he said.

Could he really follow up all that exertion with another individual medal later in the same evening?

Marchand is trained by Michael Phelps' former coach Bob Bowman and not even his former charge had managed this particular double gold haul in the same Games.

Nothing seems to faze France's newest sporting superstar though as he raced to victory with not the slightest sign of fatigue.

"It's wonderful. That tonight was amazing. It's a night he'll never forget," said a purring Bowman. "The way he handled it. His attitude about it was amazing. The way that he put different parts of it and lands how to swim each race were just exactly why I'm so proud," he added.

Marchand could add further to his historic Olympic performance when he competes in the 200m individual medley starting Thursday.

Even amidst the joy of his remarkable triumphs, Marchand's thoughts were turning to that next challenge.

"Now I'm going to have to realise what happened, appreciate every moment -- and above all, refocus for the 200 IM."
