The organisers of the Paris Olympics 2024 suffered yet another setback on Tuesday (July 30) as the men’s triathlon event was postponed to Wednesday due to the pollution in the river Seine. Having already been on the receiving end of plenty of controversies in the last few days including introducing South Korea as North Korea and hoisting the Olympics flag upside-down, the latest event adds unwanted headlines for the organisers. As things stand, there will be no triathlon at least till Wednesday with chances of further postponement if the situation does not improve.

“Despite the improvement of water quality levels over the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits,” organisers said on Tuesday.

The race has been postponed to Wednesday for 10:45 AM (14:15 IST), immediately after the women’s event, which is scheduled at 8 AM.

A whopping 1.4 billion euros ($1.51 billion) has been spent to make the river Seine pollution-free for the Olympics, but so far there has been huge disappointment for the organising committee. Last week’s rain has contributed to the pollution in the river which has again left the fans wondering why the events were held in the Seine.

Carlos Alcaraz shrugged off an injury scare to reach the last 16 of the Olympic singles tennis on Monday and said he will fight to be "100 percent" for doubles with Rafael Nadal.

Two Chinese swimmers, including one scheduled to compete at the Paris Olympics, tested positive in a doping control in 2022 but were cleared by Chinese authorities, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.

The latest report follows a major dispute in the sport around the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) at a domestic competition in late 2020 and early 2021 ahead of the Tokyo Games. The swimmers were cleared, with food contamination being given as the explanation for the positive tests.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has accused the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of a cover-up in an increasingly bitter dispute.

WADA has claimed that USADA's criticism is politically motivated.

In the new report, the New York Times said that Chinese authorities concluded that a steroid had been accidentally ingested when the two swimmers ate hamburgers in Beijing, with only 'trace amounts' being detected, which they said was consistent with food contamination rather than doping.

The paper said that one of the swimmers had also been part of the previously reported case of the 23 swimmers.

In a statement in response to the article, WADA said that the latest case was part of a "wider series of cases" also including a shooter and a BMX rider, who all tested positive for metandienone, in late 2022 and early 2023.

"Upon notification, the athletes were all immediately provisionally suspended, pending investigation and remained so until late 2023 when the investigation concluded. Therefore, in the case of the two swimmers, they were suspended for more than one year," the organisation said.

WADA said that the provisional suspension, imposed on November 3rd 2022 was "with the view to asserting a four-year period of ineligibility before a CHINADA anti-doping tribunal."

But when the similar cases of the shooter and the BMX rider, neither of which are part of the Paris Olympics, emerged, CHINADA conducted an investigation into possible meat contamination.

Dozens of positives

"The investigation by CHINADA included the testing of hundreds of meat samples from various sources, with dozens revealing positive results for metandienone," WADA said.

The agency added that CHINADA had also analyzed supplements used by the athletes and conducted hair tests -- which were negative.

Both swimmers provided negative doping control samples in the days before and after the positive result, added WADA.

"Following its investigation, CHINADA concluded that the four cases were most likely linked to meat contamination and, in late 2023, closed the cases without asserting a violation, with the athletes having remained provisionally suspended throughout that time," the statement said.

WADA said it "thoroughly" reviewed the cases and decided not to challenge CHINADA's ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In 2024 WADA said it launched an investigation to "assess the circumstances, scale and risk of meat contamination with metandienone in China and other countries" which remains ongoing.

The Times had reported that a member of the International Testing Agency (ITA), who reviewed the case, argued that World Aquatics should have appealed the Chinese decision to clear the swimmers.

A spokesperson for World Aquatics said: "It would not be appropriate for World Aquatics to comment on this case in detail, but World Aquatics can confirm that it never received any recommendation from the ITA to appeal the case."

The paper cited the ITA as denying they had made such a recommendation.

WADA repeated their stance that politics was at play in the criticism of their approach to the Chinese cases.

India opened its account at the Paris Olympics after 22-year-old shooter Manu Bhaker clinched the nation’s first medal on Sunday (July 28). The tally was doubled on Tuesday when she clinched another bronze in the team’s event as the largest democracy in the world continues its tradition of bagging at least one medal at the Summer Olympics since 1996. In fact, since 1928, India has failed to win a medal at the Summer Olympics on only four occasions (1976, 1984, 1988 and 1992). While India continues to rise, neighbours, Pakistan have endured tough luck in the quadrennial event.

Pakistan’s performance at the Summer Olympic Games

At the time of writing, India had bagged its 37th medal at the Olympics (all in Summer Olympics) while Pakistan is on a run of 32 years without a medal at the quadrennial event. The nation has not won an Olympic medal since the 1992 Barcelona Games when their men’s field hockey team beat the Netherlands for the bronze medal. But hardly anyone associated with the nation would have expected the bronze medal to be the country’s last for a long time.

Breaking down the numbers, Pakistan has won only 10 medals at the Olympics (all in Summer Games). Like India, they gained freedom in 1947 and had a great start to their Olympic career having won medals from 1956 until 1976 with all coming in field hockey. During this period, the Islamic nation won two gold, three silvers and a bronze medal while also losing two bronze medal matches.

Despite no success at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Pakistan returned to the podium in 1984 and clinched its third and to date last gold medal when they yet again conquered field hockey. They would add one more medal to the field hockey event in the form of a bronze in the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Interestingly, of the 10 medals won in the Olympics by Pakistan, eight have come from field hockey meaning the nation has only two more Olympic medals from other disciplines. In 1960, Muhammad Bashir won a bronze medal in men’s freestyle wrestling while the nation’s last individual medal came in the 1988 Seoul Games when Hussain Shah secured a bronze yet again.

What makes Pakistan’s number more miserable?

While India now has multiple male-female athletes winning medals at the Olympics in different disciplines, the same can’t be said for their nation. To date, no Pakistan female athlete has won an Olympic medal while the country has not seen an individual silver or gold medallist in their entire history. Their run of 36 years without an individual medal is one of the longest in the history of the Olympics.

Who can end the run?

There is a big glimmer of hope this year for Pakistani fans with Arshad Nadeem a top candidate to end the barren run. The Javelin throw athlete almost ended the medal drought in the Tokyo Olympics when he finished fifth. However, this year he is expected to reach the podium as the nation hopes to end its Olympic drought for medals.

You know what women are like … hanging around, doing their makeup," he was heard saying. The video clip soon went viral and Eurosport swiftly removed Ballard from commentator duties. He wasn't part of the team when the swimming event resumed on Sunday.

Eurosport took the matter seriously and immediately took action. Issuing a statement in the matter, it said, “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”

Right after Ballard made the statement, his co-commentator Lizzie Simmonds lashed out at him, calling the remark “outrageous”. Ballard hasn't publicly said anything on the matter yet. Notably, he has been working in the field for over four decades and has covered swimming, diving and water polo.

Paris Olympics 2024: Broadcasters urge male camera operators to avoid ‘sexist filming of women’

Leon Marchand said he had goosebumps after romping to France's first Olympic swimming gold since 2012 in front of a packed and raucous Paris crowd on Sunday.

Marchand obliterated the rest of the field in the 400m individual medley final in clocking 4mins 02.95secs, nearly six seconds clear of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita in second, with American Carson Foster third.

It was the second-fastest 400m IM time ever and gave most of the spectators at La Defense Arena what they came for on the second night of competition.

The 22-year-old was greeted with a massive roar when he entered the arena and the noise did not let up until long after he had touched the wall in an Olympic record time.

"I had goosebumps on the podium," said Marchand, who will also swim the 200m medley and 200m butterfly. "I felt really proud to be myself and to be also French tonight. It was an amazing time for me and I was really living it in the moment, so that was pretty cool." Marchand said he took a call from French president Emmanuel Macron after the race. Paris Olympics 2024: ‘French Michael Phelps’ Marchand wins gold in 400m individual medley in record time

A radiant Simone Biles made her long-awaited Olympic return at the Paris Games on Sunday, drawing boisterous cheers and applause from an ecstatic, star-studded crowd in a performance that gave U.S. gymnasts the lead in women's qualifying.

After Biles' brilliance the U.S. qualified with ease in first place, far ahead of second-placed Italy while China, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Britain, and Romania all booked their spots in Tuesday's final.

Biles, the world's most decorated gymnast, returned for her third Olympics after she abruptly pulled out from the team final at the Tokyo Games suffering from the "twisties", a term used to describe the temporary loss of spatial awareness while performing high-difficulty elements.

Biles also withdrew from the all-around and a number of apparatus finals in Tokyo, raising questions about whether she would ever set foot in an Olympic arena again.

But after a two-year hiatus and with the help of her teammates and a therapist, she made a glorious return in Paris in front of a crowd at the Bercy Arena that included celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Lady Gaga and Snoop Dogg, reinforcing her status of one of the greatest athletes of all-time.

The 27-year-old Biles showed she was back to earn some more glittering gold medals as she laid down the marker in the all-around competition, topping the qualifying standings with a score of 59.566.

She seemed less pleased, however, with her floor routine, which had a few hiccups but still earned her a score of 14.600, finishing 0.700 ahead of Andrade.
