Having been the focal point of critics, media and social media attention throughout the week for gender argument, she beat Hungary's Hamori in a clean sweep 5-0 win which guarantees a medal for reaching the semis. While she aims high and will try for a gold medal in her next bout, Khelif was seen as emotional after her recent bout.

Khelif burst into tears immediately after winning the bout and hugged her coaches while on the way down from the ring.

Imane Khelif controversy

On Tuesday, Khelif beat Carini who opted out from her welterweight round of 16 clash after just 46 seconds of copping a huge blow on her nose by the opposition, leaving her bleeding. Following this, she walked out of the contest claiming it 'unfair' to battle against a biologically male opponent.

During the 2023 World Championships, Khelif failed a gender eligibility test and, as a result, was disqualified before her gold medal bout in New Delhi last year for not meeting the International Boxing Association's (IBA) eligibility criteria. Back then, the incident made heads turn and led to a huge uproar in the sporting fraternity, with many lashing at the IOC for their eligibility criteria.

As things stand, she will compete in her semifinal match on Sunday which could see her move a step closer to the Olympic gold medal. Even if she fails to win in the semis she will still make the podium with at least a bronze medal around the neck.

Hockey India has raised an official complaint over 'umpiring and decision-making' during their quarterfinal match against Great Britain on Sunday (Aug 4) at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

India went on to win the match 4-2 in shootout after the score was level at 1-1 at the completion of four quarters. It is to be noted that India played most of the match with 10 players after Amit Rohidas was given a red card in the second quarter of the match.

"The complaint focuses on a critical match between India and Great Britain, where several inconsistencies in officiating potentially influenced the game's outcome," said Hockey India in a statement.

The issues listed in the organisation's statement are as follows:

Inconsistent video umpire reviews, particularly regarding the red card decision for an Indian player, which has eroded trust in the video review system.

Coaching of a goalkeeper from behind the goalpost during the shoot-out.

Use of a video tablet by a goalkeeper during the shoot-out.

"These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches," the statement further added.

During the match, skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored a goal to take India in front after Rohidas' exit.

Great Britain's Morton Lee scored the equaliser nearly five minutes later in the same quarter, and the score remained 1-1 for the remainder of the game.

India goalkepper PR Sreejesh displayed exemplary skills to save attempts from the Brits in the shootout, while the Indians scored on all four attempts.

India will next play the winner of Argentina vs Germany in the semi-final on Tuesday (Aug 6).

It is another successful campaign for the Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024 as they continue their sparkling form in the French capital. At the time of writing, India has won three medals in the Paris Games and continues search for more glory. While athletes play a huge role in making the nation proud, the backbone of these athletes is the support provided to them. WION caught up with founder and Managing Director of IOS Sports & Entertainment, Neerav Tomar, who discussed in detail how they work for branding.

Changing landscape of Indian sports branding

Over the past eight years, Neerav’s brainchild, IOS Sports & Entertainment has been the exclusive marketing agency for the Indian Olympic Association which has stood behind the success of prominent medal-winning athletes.

“The journey of IOS has been unrealistic, considering we have about 60 athletes as part of our family which included Vijender Singh (the first Indian boxer to win a bronze at the Olympics). Having started in 2005, we had setup challenges but eventually, we overcame them. Our major deal was in 2016, when we joined hands with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) when there were hardly any sponsors. However, the athletes now don’t have to worry as we now have 14 sponsors,” Tomar said in an exclusive conversation with WION.

Asked how sponsorship deals have inflated over the last eight, Tomar reflected on the journey and stated how he has pioneered to set a benchmark.

“Back in 2016 before the Rio Olympics, there was a lack of strategies and approaches when the deals were made. However, now we have seen an exponential growth of almost 2000 per cent as we have set up strategies on how to deliver and bring big brands and this has helped IOS and the IOA to be successful in cracking big sponsorship deals,” Tomar added.

Scottie Scheffler won men's golf gold on his Olympic debut with a thrilling one-stroke victory ahead of Britain's Tommy Fleetwood on Sunday.

The American world number one secured his seventh win of the year with a course record-equalling 62 at Le Golf National to edge out silver medallist Fleetwood on 19-under par for the tournament.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama had to settle for bronze on 17 under after a dramatic final round that saw several players challenge for the medals.

Jon Rahm sat four shots ahead after 10 holes but fell away badly to finish tied fifth with Rory McIlroy, whose hopes were dashed by a double-bogey on the 15th.

"I did it myself. What it represents and what it could have been for Spain is what makes it more painful," said Rahm.

Reigning champion Xander Schauffele, who was tied for the overnight lead with Rahm, dropped out of contention with a three-over back nine.

"It sucks. Not very happy with it to be honest," said the PGA Championship and British Open champion. "Not a whole lot of positives, obviously, from it."

Frenchman Victor Perez delighted the home fans with a stunning surge through the field but finished in fourth place despite his 63, which included a run of four birdies and an eagle in the space of five holes.

Scheffler continued his magnificent season, which has also delivered his second Masters and Players Championship titles, with a majestic fourth round.

He was six strokes off the pace at one point during the back nine, but carded a six-under 29 for the inward half as those behind him on the course, especially Rahm, faltered.

Rahm blows lead

Rahm had eased into a four-shot lead with six birdies in his first 10 holes and appeared to be cruising to the title.

But back-to-back bogeys, coupled with successive birdies from Fleetwood, saw the Spaniard's advantage evaporate.

Scheffler, McIlroy, Matsuyama and Perez all seized the opportunity to charge into contention, leaving the top six players on the leaderboard separated by just two shots as the final group headed into the last five holes.

Ireland's McIlroy was the first to blink, dumping his approach shot on the 15th hole into the water to all but end his title tilt.

Rahm then suffered another serious dent to his bid when he contrived to make a double-bogey on the easy par-five 14th.

Perez narrowly missed long birdie putts on the final two greens but set the clubhouse target at 16-under overall after a sparkling back-nine 29 which sent roars echoing across the Albatros course.

Scheffler, who had earlier started the day with three straight birdies, moved into the solo lead for the first time with a fourth successive birdie on the 17th, despite having found the rough off the tee.

He safely parred the last to set a mark of 19-under, which Fleetwood reached with a brilliant birdie on the 16th.

But the Englishman handed a shot back on the 17th after a clumsy chip from just off the green, leaving himself needing birdie at the last to force a play-off.

Fleetwood could not produce any more late heroics to suffer yet another near-miss in his career, while Scheffler celebrated on the practice range.

Paris Olympics 2024: Germany knock out defending champions Canada to reach semis in women’s football

Julien Alfred delivered a brilliant gun-to-tape performance to win the women’s 100 metres final in a rain-sodden Stade de France on Saturday and claim Saint Lucia’s first-ever Olympic medal. Alfred, 23, made her usual slick start and remained clear in heavy rain to come home in a national record 10.72 seconds.

World champion and race favourite Sha'Carri Richardson took silver in 10.87 but the American never really threatened and her compatriot Melissa Jefferson claimed bronze in 10.92.

Double Olympic champion Fraser-Pryce, appearing in her fifth Olympics, was listed as 'Did Not Start' shortly before the semi-finals and her lane remained empty.

Social media footage later emerged of her and Jamaican team members arguing with officials who appeared to be refusing to let her in. Richardson was also seen waiting at the same gate.

Fraser-Pryce was heard saying "they've changed the rules, we always come through this gate".

However, Jamaican Chef de Mission Ian Kelly said her absence was due to injury.

"There was an issue but that was not the reason she did not run," he told Reuters. "Mrs Fraser-Pryce was allowed to enter the warm-up track but from another gate from which she was directed to enter from. There is no truth that she was not allowed to enter the stadium. Unfortunately, she was not able to compete due to an injury sustained during her final warm-up."

With Fraser-Pryce missing the semi-final, Richardson was slow out of the blocks and could not overhaul Alfred.

It was almost a repeat of last year’s world championships, when Richardson sneaked into the final as a fast loser and won the title from lane nine.

There was to be no repeat this time, however, as U.S.-based Alfred hit her stride brilliantly and splashed home for a glorious gold.

Alfred broke down in tears as she dedicated her win to her late father.

"He believed that I could do it. He passed away in 2013 - now he couldn’t get to see me on the biggest stage of my career," she told reporters. "He believed that I could be an Olympian.

"Growing up I used to be on the field, struggling with no shoes, running barefoot, running in my school uniform.

"We barely had facilities. I’m really hoping this gold medal helps the youth and helps St Lucian government to also build the new stadium to just keep the sport growing."

The result meant the United States' 28-year gold medal drought in the event goes on. Gail Devers was their last winner in 1996. Marion Jones was stripped of her 2000 Olympic gold for doping.

It also ended Jamaica’s stranglehold on the women's 100m after they won the last four Olympic golds and 10 of the 12 available medals.

Their only finalist on Saturday was 19-year-old Tia Clayton, who was an impressive winner of her semi-final in 10.89 but managed only 11.04 in the final to finish seventh.

Unfortunately, she was not able to compete due to an injury sustained during her final warm-up." With Fraser-Pryce missing the semi-final, Richardson was slow out of the blocks and could not overhaul Alfred. It was almost a repeat of last year’s world championships, when Richardson sneaked into the final as a fast loser and won the title from lane nine. There was to be no repeat this time, however, as U.S.-based Alfred hit her stride brilliantly and splashed home for a glorious gold. Paris Olympics 2024: St Lucia's Julien Alfred pips Sha'Carri Richardson to win women's 100m gold

Katie Ledecky tore up the record books again at the Paris Games by claiming a ninth career gold medal, while teenager Summer McIntosh put her name among the greats as Canada's first triple champion at a single Olympics.

Caeleb Dressel joined compatriot Ledecky with a ninth gold without diving into the La Defense Arena pool when his United States teammates swept to the mixed medley relay title in world record time.

But home hero Leon Marchand tasted defeat for the first time despite the ear-splitting support of another packed house when France finished fourth in the relay.

With four golds, Marchand has been the meet's pre-eminent champion -- but Saturday night belonged to Ledecky as she won an unprecedented fourth 800 metres freestyle title to match former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's record of nine gold medals for a female Olympian.

Ledecky also joined fellow American great Phelps as the only swimmer to win four or more Olympic golds in the same event.

She won the 800 in 8:11.04, a second clear of Australia's silver medallist Ariarne Titmus in a repeat of their Tokyo 2020 tussle.

Ledecky's teammate Paige Madden took bronze.

Ledecky's victory was exactly 12 years on from her first 800 title at the 2012 London Games at the age of 15.

"I knew that August 3rd is the day I won in 2012, and I didn't want August 3rd to be a day that I didn't move forward, so I kind of felt like I put a lot of pressure on myself," Ledecky told reporters.

"But I'm just really happy that I could get the job done."

At the tender age of 17, McIntosh knows all about getting it done. She became Canada's first triple gold-medallist at the same Games when she won the 200m individual medley(IM), having already won the 400 IM and 200m butterfly.

"I'm always wanting more," said McIntosh, who will swim in the women's 4x100m medley relay on the final day on Sunday. "I'm never satisfied, and I think that's one of my strengths."

American Kate Douglass took the 200 IM silver and Australian Kaylee McKeown was awarded the bronze after U.S. swimmer Alex Walsh, the 2021 silver medallist, was disqualified for an illegal turn.

McIntosh finished her individual events at Paris with three golds and a silver, joining Michelle Smith, Katinka Hosszu and Kristin Otto with four individual medals from a single Games.

Only Australia's Shane Gould, who took five at Munich 1972, has more among women swimmers.

Deployed as a heat swimmer on Friday, Dressel was benched for the mixed medley final but will celebrate the gold anyway. His ninth puts him level with Mark Spitz, second on the all-time list for men's swimming, with only Michael Phelps above them.

The U.S. final quartet of Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske won the medley in three minutes 37.43 seconds, smashing the previous world record of 3:37.58 set by Britain during their gold-winning swim at Tokyo.

Hungary earlier celebrated a second gold of the meet as Kristof Milak took the men's 100m butterfly title in 49.90, 0.09 seconds ahead of Canadian runner-up Josh Liendo.

Ilya Kharun grabbed a second bronze for Canada, having also taken one in the 200m butterfly in Paris.

The Paris pool has been the throw-back Olympics in many ways, with evergreen Swede Sarah Sjostrom claiming a stunning 100m freestyle gold after deciding very late to enter the event.

She will be strong favourite to add the 50m title on the final night on Sunday after resetting the Olympic record and falling only 0.05 of a second short of her world record (23.61) in a stunning semi-final swim.

Ireland's first Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen, the men's 800m freestyle gold medallist, will bid for the 1,500m crown to complete the distance double.

The meet will close with finals for the men's and women's 4x100m medley relays.

Lin Yu-ting beat Svetlana Kamenova Staneva of Bulgaria by a unanimous decision in a featherweight quarter-final fight on Sunday to ensure Taiwan's third boxing medal at the Paris Olympics.

Lin and Algeria's Imane Khelif have been at the centre of a social media storm at the Paris Games due to them being disqualified at the 2023 World Championships after falling foul of unspecified International Boxing Association's gender eligibility rules.

"I know all of Taiwan's people are standing behind me and supporting me, and I will carry this energy to the end," Lin said after her win.

"Even though I won this match doesn't mean I can relax, I still need to work hard."

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said on Saturday there "was never any doubt" that Lin and Khelif were women who had every right to compete at the Paris Olympics.

The boxing tournament in Paris is being organised by the IOC, which stripped the IBA of international recognition in 2023 over governance and finance issues.

On Friday, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee said it had voiced its concerns over the two boxers' presence at the tournament during a meeting with the IOC's Medical and Scientific Commission on July 27.

In Saturday's bout, the taller Lin attempted to sit back and let her opponent come to her in the first round, a strategy which had mixed results as she was struck with a few big shots.

In the second round, double world champion Lin was more direct and took the fight to Staneva, who showcased her frustration by grappling with Lin and pushing her onto the canvas.

With a 3-0 lead heading into the final round, Lin once again tried to be evasive and found herself on the floor when she was accidentally tripped by Staneva, who held the ropes open for the Taiwanese boxer to exit the ring at the end of the fight.

Lin, who will face Turkey's Esra Yildiz in the semi-finals, is assured of a medal, adding to compatriots Wu Shih-yi and Chen Nien-chin efforts from Saturday.

Algerian Khelif is also assured at least bronze after winning her welterweight quarterfinal against Hungary's Luca Anna Hamori by unanimous decision on Saturday.

The debate over Khelif and Lin's participation in the tournament rocketed after the Algerian won her round-of-16 bout in 46 seconds on Thursday, when her Italian opponent Angela Carini pulled out of the fight.

Carini was hit with multiple punches in the first 30 seconds, before raising her hand and returning to her corner to withdraw from the fight, saying she had felt intense pain and was worried about her own safety.

After the bout, Carini said she did not harbour any ill feelings towards the Algerian.

Ace shooter Manu Bhaker is named India’s flag bearer at the Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony on August 11. Although the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named her the female flag bearer, they are yet to name the men’s flag bearer.

Bhaker has been the standout performer this edition, winning two bronze medals in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol and Mixed Team 10m Air Pistol final (alongside Sarabjot Singh), respectively.

Later, after qualifying for the 25m Pistol final, Manu finished fourth, losing the chance to win her third medal at the Paris Games 2024 by just two points.

With two medals in total in one edition, Manu is the first Indian to unlock this feat. Her twin bronze medals put her on the elite list of Indian athletes with two medals at the Summer Games.

She is now only the third Indian after badminton star PV Sindhu (silver at Rio 2016 and bronze medal at Tokyo 2020) and former wrestler Sushil Kumar (bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics) to bag this achievement.

However, with age on her side and considering the ocean of talent she possesses, Manu can get past the tally and create history.

The next Olympic Games will take place four years later in Los Angeles.

Novak Djokovic snapped his Olympic semi-final jinx with a 6-4 6-2 defeat of Italy's Lorenzo Musetti on Friday to set up a blockbuster battle for gold against Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.

The 37-year-old Serb had lost his three previous Olympic singles semi-finals but was in no mood to suffer more heartache as he dominated a high-quality duel at Roland Garros.

Earlier on Court Philippe Chatrier, the 21-year-old Alcaraz thrashed Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1 6-1.

Djokovic needs only the Olympic gold to complete the full set of achievements in a career that has earned him 24 Grand Slam titles and the relief of reaching the final was clear as he laid on his back, arms outstretched, after match point.

"Three of the (previous) four Olympic Games I played I made semi-finals but failed to overcome that hurdle," Djokovic, whose only medal was a singles bronze in 2008, told reporters. "Just to secure a higher medal for my country, whatever happens on Sunday, is a huge pride and honour. I'm going for gold, but this is a big deal."

Djokovic lost to Rafa Nadal in the semi-final in Beijing, Andy Murray in the 2012 last four in London and in Tokyo it was Alexander Zverev who blocked his path.

Musetti, bidding to emulate the Italian duo of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani who reached the women's doubles final, started superbly but Djokovic found another gear to break serve in the 10th game from 40-0 down and take the first set.

Djokovic, who had concerns over his strapped-up knee ahead of the match, lost his cool in the second after twice dropping his serve, and was raging after a code violation. But he responded like the warrior he is, reeling off five games to became the oldest Olympic men's singles finalist since tennis returned to the Games in 1988.

Formidable obstacle

Second seed Alcaraz is the youngest and judging by his demolition of Auger-Aliassime he will be a formidable obstacle. The 21-year-old, who outplayed Djokovic to win his second Wimbledon title last month, was in devastating form and needed little more than an hour to earn his shot at gold.

"It means a lot to me being in a final at the Olympic Games and giving myself the chance to fight for a gold medal for my country. It is a special moment for my career and my life," Alcaraz, who like Djokovic has not dropped a set, said. "I'm really happy to bring a medal to my country, and hopefully, it's going to be the gold one."

Auger-Aliassime, bidding to become the first Canadian to reach an Olympic singles final, was outclassed.

"In every aspect, I was dominated, there's not much more to say," the 23-year-old said.

Realistically, Sunday's final is Djokovic's last chance to scratch his Olympic itch but he said he has nothing to lose.

"Alcaraz has proved the best player in the world at the moment," he said. "He's definitely favourite, but it's the Olympics, it's anybody's game."

Crystal Palace striker Mateta struck five minutes into the quarter-final, meeting Michael Olise's corner with a superb near-post header.

That proved enough for the hosts, coached by Thierry Henry, to reach the last four, where they face Egypt.

Friday's clash was the first meeting of the nations since Argentina players were recorded singing racist chants about their French counterparts as they celebrated winning the Copa America in mid-July.

FIFA announced it would investigate the chants, which targeted France's star striker Kylian Mbappe among others and included racist and homophobic insults.

The Argentina team were met with a hostile welcome, where the crowd loudly jeered their national anthem as the sides met for the first time since the 2022 World Cup final, which the South Americans won on penalties.

Henry said midfielder Enzo Millot, who had been substituted late on, was shown a red card after the final whistle.

"He wasn't on the pitch. Maybe you get sent off because you get a second yellow card to stop someone running through on goal, not when you are on the bench. I am really not happy about that," Henry told broadcaster France 3.

Giuliano Simeone and Julian Alvarez missed chances for Javier Mascherano's Argentina, and the exit of the two-time gold medallists means the winner of men's football gold will not come from Latin America for the first time since Cameroon triumphed in Sydney in 2000.

France could have won by a wider margin, but Olise had a late second goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up.
