Meanwhile, after failing to represent his country in Tokyo, Rei worked on his fitness and game instead and won the gold in Paris. In the semis, he beat India’s Aman Sehrawat 10-0 in a most one-sided affair; however, Aman won the bronze medal late on Friday, his first at the Olympics, adding up India's total tally to six at this edition.

The Indian wrestler was on a winning spree at the Paris Games 2024, beating the world number one and defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan. However, on the day of the final, she got disqualified for being overweight by just 100gms, missing out on the medal and podium finish.

Paris Olympics: How India's Aman Sehrawat lost 4.5 kg before clinching bronze medal

A resurgent United States under new coach Emma Hayes are hoping to establish themselves as the leading force in women's international football once again by claiming the gold medal in Saturday's Olympic final against Brazil and their legendary skipper Marta.

The USA came into the Olympics with a rejuvenated squad and a point to prove after a poor showing at last year's World Cup, when they were eliminated in the last 16.

They also performed below par at each of the last two Olympics, finishing out of the medals at Rio 2016 before taking bronze three years ago in Tokyo.

But the arrival of renowned English coach Hayes from Chelsea has given the USA the boost they needed, and they have been inspired on their way to the final by the exciting attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman.

They have each scored three goals at the tournament, with the USA winning all three group games against Zambia, Germany and Australia before dispatching both Japan and the Germans in extra time in the knockout rounds.

Now they are hoping to add to their women's football record haul of four golds and win the title for the first time since London 2012.

"Emma came in so soon before this tournament, so we knew that was going to be a challenge, but she just came in flying and we absolutely love her," said Smith, the Colorado-born forward who turns 24 on the day of the final.

"She has worked every day to build our trust and show us she cares about us. She is such a great coach and such a great mentor.

"We are a completely different team and a lot of the credit goes to Emma. She has communicated everyone's roles very clearly. We are really excited for her to be our coach for a really long time."

Third time lucky?

The USA's position as the undisputed global powerhouse of the women's game looked to be gone for some time following last year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, when a brilliant Spain team led by Aitana Bonmati were crowned champions.

However, Spain missed out in their bid to add Olympic gold to that title and the UEFA Nations League after they were surprisingly beaten 4-2 by Brazil in Tuesday's semi-final in Marseille.

Instead it is the Brazilians who will meet the USA in the gold medal match and they will be attempting to make it third time lucky after losing to the same opponents in the Athens final in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008.

Both of those finals were won by the USA in extra time, and both featured Marta, the Brazilian legend and multiple winner of the FIFA world player of the year award.

Now 38, she is appearing at her sixth and likely last Olympics, and is hoping to sign off with gold to go with her two silver medals.

USA to face Marta’s Brazil for gold medal in women’s football final at Paris Olympics 2024

The United States kept the dream alive with a stirring fourth quarter rally to tame feisty Serbia 95-91 on Thursday and move into the Paris Olympics men's basketball gold medal final against France. Trailing by double digits for much of the game and down 76-63 heading into the fourth quarter, the United States chances of a fifth consecutive gold were quickly dimming. Then NBA stars LeBron James and Stephen Curry took charge, bringing a wide-eyed capacity crowd at the Bercy Arena to their feet with a furious fight back.

The U.S. win delivered the final basketball fans wanted to see, as the American Dream Team takes on an inspired France on Saturday, in what will be a hostile Bercy Arena cauldron.

A rematch of the 2016 Rio Olympic gold medal game featured an intriguing matchup of NBA most valuable players with James, a four-times MVP against Serbia's reigning three-times MVP Nikola Jokic.

But it was two-times MVP Curry who came out with the hot hand, scoring 14 of the first 15 U.S. points in opening four minutes.

Curry finished with game-high 36 points that included nine three pointers and two clutch free throws with eight seconds to play to clinch victory.

"To come back the way we did... I've seen a lot of team USA basketball and that was a special," said Curry.

After grinding away at the Serbia lead, James drove to the hoop, tying the contest at 84-84. Curry finally put the U.S. ahead with a three-pointer seconds later.

The quick fire burst continued with James driving to the bucket again followed a Curry steal and another basket to leave a reeling Serbia down 91-86 and on the ropes.

"My teammates believe in me and I was able to come through for them," said James, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. "I told them that it's good to be tested. It's great to be tested.

"I'm 39 years old, going into my 22nd season. I don't know how many opportunities and moments I'm going get like this to be able to compete for ... something big and playing big games, and tonight was a big game."

France Thriller

Earlier, bolstered by an electric home crowd, a turbo-charged France won a 73-69 thriller over Germany.

France was led by a 17-point effort from Guerschon Yabusele while Isaia Cordinier chipped in 16, none more important than two free throws with seven seconds to play to blunt a Germany fight back and seal victory.

"I think the national team, this jersey, brings to us that different energy that we can't find nowhere else," said Victor Wembanyama, the first Frenchman taken number one overall in the NBA draft.

"We can see how intense we've been over the last two games. It's something that we all feel as patriots. We love our jersey. We love our country," said the 2.2-metre (7-foot, 3-inch) tall centre.

After a loss to Germany in their final group game, France came prepared for a battle and got one in a tense nail-biter that was not decided until the final seconds.

French fans arrived prepared to party, but Germany dialled back some of that excitement when they jumped out to a 12-2 lead.

The arena was soon rocking again as France worked their way back, the crowd erupting in a mighty rafter rattling roar when Wembanyama hit the final basket of the half to send the teams into the break deadlocked at 33-33.

Fully fuelled by the pumped up crowd, France powered to a 56-50 third-quarter lead and led 70-65 with just 40 seconds to play.

Franz Wagner dampened the party atmosphere by hitting a three-pointer to cut the France advantage to just two, leaving a stunned French crowd on the edge of their seats.

But France refused to buckle. Cordinier's steely free throws turned the volume all the way up again with a massive celebration erupting as the final seconds ticked down, the players mobbing each other and dancing to roars of approval.

"Incredible moment with the fans," said Wembanyama. "They made it hard for me not to cry."

Sachin Tendulkar backs Vinesh for the silver medal

"Every sport has rules and those rules need to be seen in context, maybe even revisited at times. Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals. Her disqualification by weight, was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense."

"It would have been understandable if an athlete were to have been disqualified for ethical breaches such as the usage of performance enhancing drugs. "While we all wait for a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, let us hope and pray that Vinesh gets the recognition she deserves," said Tendulkar.

Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals. Her disqualification by weight, was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense." Paris Olympics javelin final: Neeraj Chopra seals silver

Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec went viral for his cool, calm demeanour at the Paris Olympics, but said there were "storms" within him as he won silver in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol event.

His nonchalant pose, with his non-shooting hand casually tucked into his pocket, sparked a flurry of memes and won a legion fans online - as well as eliciting a tribute from pole vault great Mondo Duplantis and banter with Elon Musk.

He eschewed the high-tech gear of his competitors, opting for a simple yellow ear plug and regular glasses as he and Sevval Ilayda Tarhan secured their podium finish.

"At that moment, everyone says I seemed very calm, but actually, storms were raging inside me," said Dikec, a former Turkish Gendarmerie officer.

"I think my shooting pose represented the Olympic spirit very well: the fair play, simplicity, clarity, and naturalness. That's why it got so much attention."

Swedish pole vaulter Duplantis emulated Dikec's distinctive shooting pose following his own victory, when he broke the world record.

"It's nice to see that kind hearted people feel close to each other," Dikec said.

Regarding his career goals, Dikec confidently stated: "My partner and I will get the gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games."

He said he told the gold medallist, Serbia's Damir Mikec, "I've only lent you the gold medal until 2028".

Chopra, who stood second in his second Summer Games, agreed immediately with Sreejesh’s name as the joint flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony on Sunday (August 11).

“I spoke with Neeraj Chopra and appreciate the spontaneity and grace with which he agreed that Sreejesh should be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony,” PT Usha continued. “He told me ‘Ma’am, even if you had not asked me, I would have suggested Sree bhai’s name’.
Bhaker, Sreejesh – the heroes

Considering nearly half a dozen fourth-place finishes for several athletes across different disciplines at the Paris Olympics 2024, the Indian contingent has had a tough time at this Summer Games. However, there are a few moments to cherish, including five medals won thus far, with three coming in shooting and one each in the men’s hockey and javelin throw, respectively.

Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker, 22, made headlines at her second Games by winning two medals (bronze) in a single edition, becoming the first Indian and female shooter from the country to achieve this milestone. For what she achieved and made India proud with her achievements, the IOA decided to name her the flag bearer earlier.

Besides, PR Sreejesh capped off his incredible career with his second bronze medal in Paris, while Neeraj won the silver medal in the javelin throw final while battling his groin injury.

Paris Olympics 2024 Closing Ceremony: PR Sreejesh joins Manu Bhaker as India's flag bearers

Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in the javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics 2024, falling shy of defending his gold as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem finished first with an Olympic Record (OR) of 92.97m throw. Speaking to WION’s Digvijay Singh Deo exclusively in Paris, Neeraj opened up on his second Olympic final, what stopped him from winning gold this time, and how good Arshad was in his first legal attempt.

Neeraj and Arshad fouled their first attempts while settling scores in their second. Pakistan’s Arshad attained his personal best and an OR of 92.97m distance, whereas India’s own Chopra came close, recording his season-best throw of 89.45m. That, however, sealed the medal tally, at least for the first two spots.

There wasn’t much to read in their remaining throws other than Arshad’s last throw, which also breached the 90m (for the second time in the Olympic Final), registering a 91.79m throw, something Neeraj is yet to unlock.

However, considering Neeraj had a groin injury to worry about, and three out of his six attempts got disqualified, his 89.45m throw is praiseworthy. Speaking his heart out in an exclusive chat with WION, Neeraj said,

“The competition was great. Arshad was well-prepared and executed a brilliant throw. Just when Arshad threw the 92.97m mark, although I hadn’t crossed the 90m till now, I had this strange belief that I could also throw this far. I enjoyed my throw.

“For some reason, I couldn’t feel my run the way I should. My mind was on my groin injury, thinking it shouldn’t hurt. Only my second throw was valid, but every other was a foul.

“But winning the medal for my country was the best feeling,” Neeraj continued.

EXCLUSIVE – Happy for Arshad but winning medal for India is best feeling, says Paris Games hero Neeraj Chopra

Arshad Nadeem in green, Neeraj Chopra in blue. As the 80,000-seat Stade de France cheered, all of us could feel the thumping of 1.6 billion hearts even through the small screen.

Arshad Nadeem in green, Neeraj Chopra in blue. As the 80,000-seat Stade de France cheered, all of us could feel the thumping of 1.6 billion hearts even through the small screen. Just like the two countries, the two formidable men were also at loggerheads, but of a very different kind. This time, the battlegrounds were the Olympic Games and the javelin their weapon of choice. August 8, 2024 will go down in history as the day when two countries- Pakistan and India, competed against each other but still managed to win the hearts of the people of their countries. Also read | Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem ends nation's 32-year wait for an Olympic medal; becomes first individual to win gold Chopra and Nadeem were once again in the gold medal event of the men's javelin finals at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Pakistani put on a spectacular show with an Olympic record of 92.9 M and won his country its first Olympic medal in 32 years, and that too with the elusive gold. Chopra had a rocky journey with multiple fouls but managed to secure an impressive silver and season-best throw of 89.45 M and bagged the silver medal. Grenada's Anderson Peters won the bronze with an 88.54 M javelin throw. Nerves of gold and silver The hulking Nadeem and the lithe Chopra showed a range of emotions and gave their legions of fans a rare look inside the mind of an Olympian standing at the edge of history and eternal glory. Nadeem was seen grunting and in dismay with his initial faulty throw. Chopra was continually sighing and nodding after a series of fouls at the javelin final. Also read | Paris Olympics 2024: India's Neeraj Chopra settles for silver in javelin throw; Pak's Arshad Nadeem wins gold They gave a valuable glimpse into the pressures that an Olympic athlete faces, especially coming from countries that have never regularly excelled in athletics. Both of them are path-breakers and have opened the doors for thousands of young children to pick up the ‘bhala’ or the ‘baan.’ Humble beginnings Chopra and Nadeem's lives have run parallel, despite being born on opposite sides of the border. Both champions were born to rural agricultural families and had to face tough times to take up a sport in nations that breathe cricket. Arshad's father had to pool money to get him trained, while Neeraj got into the sport after his family forced him to lose weight and get fit. Both went on to climb (and sometimes fall off) the ladder of sporting success. Gold or silver, the deck of cards has just fallen differently this time. Symbols of friendly rivalry and a lesson for all Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem have long been at the receiving end of the India-Pakistan rivalry, a macho form of which is visible every time an India-Pakistan cricket match is played. They have been relentlessly trolled, with Chopra being slammed by Pakistani social media and Nadeem being slammed by the Indian one. But both have stood by each other firmly. Neeraj supported Arshad when he demanded a new javelin and even came out in sharp criticism of the anti-Nadeem hate campaign, which went viral on Twitter post-2020. Nadeem has always congratulated Chopra on all of his multiple victories. Also read | Who is Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem? Man who ended Neeraj Chopra's reign as Olympic champion in javelin throw While the two champions are now successfully enjoying the fruits of their labour, they have given all of us, and especially our political elite, a message of friendly competition and lasting peace. Divided nations, shared feelings The Paris Olympics javelin event has left Indians with a bittersweet taste and has elated the Pakistanis. Many will now pitch the two against each other. Politicians will come up with conspiracy theories about Chopra's gold-medal loss. Social media will rage while the two champions and Grenada's Peters will go home as heroes. But Neeraj Chopra’s tri-coloured shadow and Arshad Nadeem’s green and white one, in Paris have taught all of us an important lesson in temperance. History only remembers the victorious and the brave. But maybe just once, she couldn't differentiate between the Indian and the Pakistani, because they are in truth, born from the same soil.

Paris Olympics 2024: Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem's javelin battle has a lesson for India and Pakistan

In the men's javelin final at Paris Olympics 2024, on Thursday (Aug 8), India's Neeraj Chopra settled for silver courtesy of the 89.45m throw, whereas Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem won gold with a record-breaking throw of 92.97m. Thus, Arshad ended Neeraj's reign as the world champion and also became the first individual athlete from Pakistan to win gold at the Olympics.

The journey for Arshad has not been easy. Just five months before the showpiece event, the Pakistani javelin thrower was struggling to get a new javelin.

Arshad told the media in March 2024, "It has now got to a stage where the javelin is damaged and I have asked the national federation and my coach to do something about it before the Paris Olympics." He further opined, "When I started off in 2015, competing in international events, I got this javelin... for an international athlete aiming to win a medal in the Olympic Games, you need proper equipment and training facilities."

Further, Arshad revealed that he had been using the same javelin for nearly seven to eight years. This is when the news spread like wildfire and India's golden boy Neeraj took charge of things.

Paris Olympics: Fitting Indo-Pak rivalry! Neeraj helped Arshad in acquiring new javelin before mega event

History was created for Pakistan on multiple levels after Arshad Nadeem won the nation’s first individual gold medal on Thursday (Aug 8). The medal which also ended Pakistan’s 32-year wait for an Olympic medal was celebrated widely by the nation. While Nadeem’s medal win was expected, the colour of the medal came as a huge surprise for many. So who is Arshad Nadeem and how did he take the big stride and end the nation’s four-decade wait for an Olympic gold medal?

Who is Arshad Nadeem?

Born in Mian Channu in the Punjab province, Arshad was a born-athlete and excelled in multiple sports during his early school days. However, it was not until he met his coach Rasheed Ahmad Saqi who discovered his talent in javelin throw. He would often represent his school and college in multiple sports including cricket, but javelin throw became his primary sport after he started taking it seriously during his college days.

Now 27, Arshad in 2015 started taking the event seriously and attracted attention after his famous throws at the Punjab Youth Festivals. He received a scholarship in 2016 from World Athletics and would never turn back.

He won his first significant medal at the 2016 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam. Success would then follow at the 2018 Asian Games where he clinched a bronze medal for the nation. He also bagged a gold medal in the 2019 South Asian Games. His biggest achievement before the Olympics came at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games where he won gold in arch-rival Neeraj Chopra’s absence.

Arshad had missed out on a medal in the Tokyo Olympics having finished fifth but was determined to go one better at the Paris Olympics. In the build-up to the Paris Games, Arshad won a silver medal at the 2023 Budapest World Championships. However, his biggest moment came on Thursday when he won the nation’s first individual Olympic gold medal.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will listen to Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s plea on Friday (Aug 9) after she filed a petition for reconsideration of her Paris Olympics disqualification. Vinesh, on Wednesday, was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle category gold medal match after she was found overweight during the official weigh-in. With the Indian wrestler’s plea being accepted by the CAS on Thursday, the hearing was scheduled for Thursday evening. Earlier on Thursday, Vinesh announced that she is retiring from the sport with the Paris Olympics being her last official tournament.

India’s Aman Sehrawat will fight for a bronze medal after he was ousted in the semifinal of the men’s 57kg category wrestling on Thursday (Aug 8). Sehrawat who could have guaranteed at least a silver medal for India in the Olympics lost to Japan’s Rei Higuchi on technical superiority. Sehrawat lost 10-0 as the bout lasted little over three minutes before the Japanese were declared winner and advanced to the gold medal match.

Sehrawat to contest for bronze

Hoping to erase the pain of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification in the women’s 50kg category, Sehrawat walked into the bout on the back of consecutive wins on technical superiority. However, he was given a taste of his own medicine having lost 10-0 and eliminated from the gold medal race. The match lasted a little over three matches, eliminating Sehrawat in a one-sided contest.

The defeat for the Indian grappler means he will compete for the bronze medal on Friday where he will have two opportunities. Even if Sehrawat loses the bronze medal match he will advance to the repechage round where he can win a bronze medal.

A win in the bronze medal match will continue India’s tradition of winning an Olympic medal in wrestling in the last five editions. In 2008 Sushilkumar won a bronze medal and upgraded it to silver in the 2012 London Games along Yogeshwar Dutt. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze while Ravi Dahiya won a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

In its glorious history, India has won eight gold medals along with a silver in the 1956 Melbourne Games while adding to the four bronze medals.
