Paris prepared to bid a triumphant "au revoir" to the Olympics on Sunday as the curtain came down on its widely praised staging of the global sporting spectacular, starting a four-year countdown to the 2028 Summer Games across the Atlantic in Los Angeles, US.

The Paris Olympics come to an end with a star-studded ceremony

It was USA vs. France, Part II, and it did not disappoint. France made it as difficult as possible for Team USA, but the U.S. managed to eke out a 67-66 win to secure their eighth straight gold medal and 61st straight Olympic victory.

Paris Olympics 2024: USA win gold in women's basketball for the 8th time in a row

After 19 thrilling days and 329 events the Paris Olympics have finally come to an end the grand finale brought together stars in the world of sport, Hollywood and music in a spectacular closing ceremony.

Paris Olympics 2024 comes to an end, here is the medal tally this time

The blame game seems to have begun as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president, PT Usha, has pointed fingers at grappler Vinesh Phogat over her disqualification at the Paris Olympic Games 2024. PT Usha put Vinesh under the bus in response to criticism directed towards the IOA medical team, especially at Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, saying in combat sports like wrestling, boxing, judo and even weightlifting, the athletes are responsible for their weight management.

Her comments came when Vinesh and the wrestling contingent awaited the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verdict over her plea.&nbsp;

After qualifying for the final in the Women’s 50kg Freestyle Wrestling in Paris, Vinesh, on the day of the gold medal match, got disqualified after failing the mandatory weigh-in test in the morning, going overweight by just 100 grams.

She then appealed against this decision at the CAS (for the joint silver medal), with CAS taking time till August 13 before giving their final decision.

The aftermath of this episode turned ugly when a section of Parliament began accusing Dr Pardiwala and his team of negligence; contrary, the former IOA chief Narendra Batra alleged that Vinesh's diet might have led to her disqualification.&nbsp;

Besides, Vinesh, who was the helm of the things, hung her boots from wrestling at 29.&nbsp;

<h2>'Players are responsible for their weight management'</h2>

"...the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team. The hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation," Usha said in a statement.

She continued saying that each athlete has its support staff, with them working together for several years now, and the IOA-appointed medical team, which came to fruition just a few months ago, was there to help players recover and manage injuries.

“Each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sport had his or her own support team. These support teams have been working with the athletes over so many years.

“The IOA appointed a medical team a couple of months ago, primarily as a team that would assist in the recovery and injury management of athletes during and after their competition. This team was also designed to support athletes who did not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists,” PT Usha concluded.

The hosts needed a three to force overtime in Paris, but Williams' foot was on the three-point line as she let go of the ball, so her shot counted for just two points in a dramatic finale.&nbsp;

"It's all a blur right now," said Wilson, who also registered 13 rebounds and four blocks.

"We were just resilient, and when we needed to, we just kept going."

Kelsey Plum and Kahleah Copper both scored 12 points off the bench for the US. Williams led France with 19.

An eighth straight triumph gave the US women the record for most consecutive gold medals in any team sport at the Olympics, breaking a tie with the US men, who won seven basketball titles in a row from 1936 to 1968.

"That was an absolutely incredible basketball game. Two teams that left it all out there," said US coach Cheryl Reeve.

"Coming home with gold, I can't think of anything greater in life than what we just did together."

For the 42-year-old Diana Taurasi, it was a record sixth Olympic gold, moving her one ahead of Sue Bird.

The US women got support from LeBron James, who sat courtside wearing his gold medal and was joined by team-mates Bam Adebayo and Derrick White, after they won the men's gold by beating France 98-87 in Saturday's final.&nbsp;

It was the first time in Games history the men's and women's finals featured identical match-ups.

<h2>- Frantic finish -</h2>

A low-scoring first quarter saw a cold-shooting France muster just nine points, but the US only fared marginally better and led by six after 10 minutes.

Nevada-born Williams, who qualifies to play for France through her mother, trimmed the gap to a point with a three early in the second period before a basket from Valeriane Ayayi tied the game at 20-20.

Marine Fauthoux drained a three from near midcourt with the shot clock expiring to send the Bercy Arena crowd wild, but Napheesa Collier's putback ensured the teams headed into the break level at 25-25.

France strung together a 10-point run to start the third period as Fauthoux and Ayayi both nailed threes.

The US hit back to lead 45-43 going into the final quarter, with Plum connecting on a pair of threes, one after Marine Johannes took a nasty blow from Wilson that went unpunished, to France's fury.

Wilson belatedly found some rhythm offensively after a difficult first half, but France had an answer each time and went back in front, 51-49, on Marieme Badiane's layup.

The US nudged back ahead, Wilson getting a kind bounce off the backboard and Plum sinking a pair of free throws to leave them leading by three with two minutes to play.

Williams' jumper made it a one-point contest before Copper drove to the basket to keep the US on top.

A travelling call against Wilson gave the ball back to France with around 45 seconds left, but Fauthoux's desperation three came up well short under pressure from Breanna Stewart.

Wilson then made a free throw to extend the lead to four and Plum looked to have clinched the win with a pair of foul shots, but Williams kept France alive with a clutch three.

Copper held her nerve to sink two more free throws for the US to restore their cushion to three.&nbsp;

They needed every point as Williams nearly pulled off a miraculous escape act as the buzzer sounded, only to be denied by a matter of centimetres.

The United States claimed a record-extending fifth Olympic gold medal in women's soccer after Mallory Swanson earned them a 1-0 win over Brazil in the final at Parc des Princes on Saturday.

Following a goalless first half, Swanson broke the deadlock 12 minutes after the break to earn the U.S. their first Olympic title since London 2012 after a perfect run in the tournament.

U.S. coach Emma Hayes enjoyed almost instant success as she secured the title only two months after taking the job.

"I'm very emotional, it's a dream of mine to be in this position," a tearful Hayes told Eurosport. "I have to thank my dad for pushing me to this point, to be able to come and coach an incredible group of players that have received me so well.

"(They have) taken on everything I asked, they are tremendous people, players and role models. I love them."

Brazil were dangerous in the opening stages and came close to scoring when Gabi Portilho drew a great save from Alyssa Naeher shortly before halftime. Naeher did well again in injury time to claw away Adriana's header from point-blank range.

"It's Brazil, we know they're such a tough opponent, we knew it wasn't going to be easy, they weren't going to give us anything," U.S. defender Crystal Dunn told reporters.

"We trusted everyone was going to do their job and I'm really proud of the backline and of course Alyssa back there is such an incredible asset to the team.

"It just came down to trusting everyone was going to do their job."

<h2>Marta Returns</h2>

Brazil great Marta returned after a two-match ban handed down for a red card, coming on as a substitute after the hour mark, but did not have much impact as Brazil were beaten by the Americans in an Olympic final for the third time.

Germany beat Spain 1-0 to win the bronze medal on Friday.

Swanson, making her 100th international appearance, found the net with low finish after a solo run and a great pass from Korbin Albert to cut through the Brazilian backline.

It was her fourth goal of the tournament.

Brazil could not capitalise on the three big chances they created to send the match to extra time, but received a huge ovation from their fans after the final whistle.

"We knew it was going to be a difficult game, we did our best, we pressed and I think we were better in the first half," Brazil midfielder Adriana said. "We didn't manage to score in our chances and they scored on their best chance, but I'm confident we are going to develop into a better team."

It was an intense and evenly fought duel cheered by a huge crowd at Paris St Germain's stadium, with the likes of American former Ballon d'Or winner Megan Rapinoe, ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Tom Cruise also in attendance.

"The crowd was tremendous, Brazil was tremendous, I'm speechless," former Chelsea manager Hayes added.

Paris Olympics: Swanson's solo strike against Brazil sees USA clinch fifth gold medal in women's football

Lin Yu-ting, one of two boxers at the centre of a gender dispute at the Paris Olympics, said staying off social media and focusing on her sport had helped her cope with nearly two weeks of international headlines over her eligibility for the Games.

Lin, who beat Polish opponent Julia Szeremeta to claim the women's featherweight gold on Saturday, and Algerian Imane Khelif were both caught up in a storm that has dominated headlines and been the subject of heated debate on social media platforms.

The two boxers were disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) from the 2023 World Championships, which said a sex chromosome test had ruled both of them ineligible.

They competed in Paris after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped the IBA of its status as the sport's governing body in 2023 and took control of organising the boxing itself.

The IOC used boxing eligibility rules that were applied at the 2016 and 2021 Olympics and do not include gender testing.

"As an elite athlete during the competition, it's important to shut myself off from social media and to focus. That is extremely important," Lin told reporters after the win. "Of course I heard some of the information through my coach, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I was invited by the IOC to participate at the Games, this is what I focused on.

"As for the other news, I relied on my coach to answer the questions. I just focused on who my competitor would be, I focused on training and being able to bring my A-game when I fought."

On Saturday, Khelif's lawyer Nabil Boudi said the Algerian boxer had filed a formal legal complaint citing online harassment.

Asked if she would take similar measures, Lin said: "This is something I will discuss with my team. We will decide later what the next step will be."

Lin, a two-time world champion, was overcome by emotion after the bout and moved to tears while standing on the podium.

"During the fight, I saw images flashing and I thought about the beginning of my career when I started boxing," the 28-year-old said. "All the difficult practice sessions, the times I got injured, the competitors I fought against.

"There were times of great pain, and times of great joy. I cried because I was so touched. I represented Taiwan, I got the gold medal. I want to thank all the people in Taiwan who supported me, from the beginning to the end."

Paris Games: Gold medalist Lin Yu-ting mulls taking legal action against online harassment over gender dispute

Pakistan: Grand welcome for Olympian Arshad Nadeem

The United States won their fifth straight Olympic men's basketball crown on Saturday, holding off a battling France 98-87 to take their tally of Olympic golds to 17.

In a rematch of the Tokyo Olympics final three years ago, LeBron James and the US team stacked with NBA stars once again proved too much for France, despite the efforts of sensational NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.

France sliced a 14-point deficit to three with 3min 04sec to play on Wembanyama's put-back dunk, but Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry drilled a three-pointer -- one of four from him with less than three minutes remaining -- and the United States relentlessly powered to the finish.

Curry finished with eight three-pointers -- including a rainbow over a leaping Wembanyama -- and led the US scoring with 24 points.

"You just simply marvel," James said of Curry. "Having him on your side, you just try to get stops and figure out other ways on the other end but keep finding him, keep getting him the ball."

Curry said of his late-game heroics: "I was just trying to settle us down."

"All we wanted to do was get a good shot," Curry said. "It had been a while since we had a good possession.

"(Finally) the momentum was on our side. At that point, your mind goes blank. You don't really care about setting or the scenario or anything. It's just a shot."

Kevin Durant and Devin Booker added 15 points apiece and James scored 14 with six rebounds, 10 assists, a steal and a block.

For Durant it was a US men's record fourth Olympic gold. James earned his third and Curry, a four-time NBA champion, claimed his first in his first Olympic appearance.

"There's a lot of relief," Curry said. "It wasn't easy but, damn, I'm excited, man. This is everything that I wanted it to be and more, so I'm excited."

Wembanyama had his best offensive game of the Olympics, scoring 26 points. Guerschon Yabusele added 20.

France connected on just nine of 30 three-point attempts and the United States held a 31-9 advantage in fast-break points.

Both teams were locked in defensively in a tense first half that featured 10 lead changes.

Wembanyama soared for a dunk that gave France an 11-10 lead and sent the Bercy Arena crowd into a frenzy.

The Americans were soon back in front when Booker made a layup off a behind-the-back pass from James and a steal from James set Jayson Tatum loose for a dunk.

Down by five after one quarter, France took a 25-24 lead on a Bilal Coulibaly dunk, but the US continued to capitalize in transition off of France's misses.

James drove through traffic for a layup, drawing a foul and flexing at the US bench before making the free throw to put the United States up 37-31, and they led 49-41 at halftime.

<h2>Dream final</h2>

The dream final drew a raft of luminaries. French President Emmanuel Macron was in the house and so was sprint star Sha'Carri Richardson, a day after she anchored the US 4x100m relay to gold.

James signalled his intentions early, taking the court in golden shoes and opening the scoring with a dunk.

Curry, who scored 36 points in the come-from-behind semi-final victory over Serbia, heated up in the second half, giving the US their biggest lead of the game, 61-47, with a three-pointer early in the third.

France kept pressing and were only six down heading into the fourth quarter, but finally had to watch the US players celebrate at the end, draped in flags.

A downcast Wembanyama could only hug his teammates, but with the silver medal around his neck he called the experience "incredible" and said he'd try to return the favor at Los Angeles in 2028.

"I will be going for gold in four years' time," he said.

ALSO READ: Olympics chief Thomas Bach says will not seek third term "You just simply marvel," James said of Curry. "Having him on your side, you just try to get stops and figure out other ways on the other end but keep finding him, keep getting him the ball." Curry said of his late-game heroics: "I was just trying to settle us down." "All we wanted to do was get a good shot," Curry said. "It had been a while since we had a good possession. "(Finally) the momentum was on our side. At that point, your mind goes blank. You don't really care about setting or the scenario or anything. It's just a shot." Kevin Durant and Devin Booker added 15 points apiece and James scored 14 with six rebounds, 10 assists, a steal and a block. For Durant it was a US men's record fourth Olympic gold. James earned his third and Curry, a four-time NBA champion, claimed his first in his first Olympic appearance. "There's a lot of relief," Curry said. "It wasn't easy but, damn, I'm excited, man. This is everything that I wanted it to be and more, so I'm excited." Wembanyama had his best offensive game of the Olympics, scoring 26 points. Dream final The dream final drew a raft of luminaries. Earlier Saturday, Serbia won bronze with a dominant 93-83 victory over World Cup champions Germany. Three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic posted a triple double of 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to lead Serbia, who lost 95-91 to the United States in the semi-finals. Lakshya Sen resumes quest for Olympic gold after Paris heartbreak, says ‘the fire burns brightly within me’

Arshad Nadeem is a household name in Pakistan and among the athletics fraternity worldwide for his Paris Games heroics. Fayaz Bukhari, Arshad’s first javelin coach, spoke exclusively to WION, sharing his thoughts on Arshad’s record Olympic gold medal win and what is next for the Pakistan superstar. Fayaz also praised India’s Neeraj Chopra for his season-best throw at the Summer Games.

Entering the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics 2024, Arshad and Neeraj were the gold medal favourites, and as destiny had it, both were in the top two.&nbsp;

While Pakistan’s Arshad ended the country’s 32-year medal drought at the Summer Games with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m, India’s Neeraj fell shy of defending his title, settling for silver with an 89.45m throw.

Although both began with a fouled throw, Arshad and Neeraj threw their best in their second attempts, respectively. Arshad sealed his gold medal with that monstrous throw and again breached the 90m mark in his final attempt by registering a distance of 91.97m – the second-best at this year’s Games.

Considering Arshad, 27, has shown he has the stomach to break the Olympic record, his first coach feels the Pakistan star still has plenty of throws left in him, and now must think of breaking the world record (98.48m), which Czech Republic's Jan Zelezny secured in 1996.

“Arshad is among my first students. He still has throws left in him; he is not that aged. He must work hard to sustain the level attained and think of creating the world record,” Fayaz Bukhari told WION in an exclusive chat.

<h2>‘Neeraj is our child’</h2>

India’s Neeraj Chopra battled a groin injury, finishing second with his best attempt, but Fayaz feels his throw was nothing less than world-class.

Praising the former gold medalist in this event, Arshad’s coach said,

“Chopra (Neeraj) is our child; he’s a very good person, and I am glad he’s part of our athletic family. They (Arshad and Neeraj) are friends, and friendship happens because of respect, and they both respect each other. Besides, Neeraj’s throw (of 89m plus) wasn’t bad, rather it’s world-class.&nbsp;

“This time, Arshad was in better form, and he won, thankfully,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Neeraj is said to have a surgery on his groin that continued troubling him even during the build-up to the Paris Olympics 2024.

<h2>Arshad wins gold, Neeraj walks away with pride</h2>

Reigning and defending Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra was the favourite for the top prize once again, and his throw of 89.34m in the qualification round was not coincidental. He finished at the top after his first attempt and qualified for the final.&nbsp;

On D-day, Neeraj began with a fouled throw, and so did Arshad; however, after Arshad’s monumental throw of 92.97m, which eventually won him the gold, Neeraj threw his best (89.45m) in his second attempt.

Although both fouled twice, each in their remaining attempts, Pakistan’s Arshad capped off his exceptional performance with another 90m-plus throw (91.79m) in his final attempt.&nbsp;

All the winners were awarded their respective medals on Friday (August 9).

<h2>India’s Aman Sehrawat bags bronze</h2>

Having faced disappointment in the women’s 50kg category in wrestling when Vinesh Phogat was disqualified, it was Aman who made the nation proud with a bronze medal. The Indian wrestler joins an elite company of KD Jadhav, Sushil Kumar, Ravi Dahiya and Yogeshwar Dutt among male Olympic medalists for the nation. Interestingly, despite losing the semis on technical superiority, Aman was successful in bagging the bronze medal for the nation. &nbsp;

Aman’s success means India now has six medals at the Paris Olympics which includes five bronze medals. The 21-year-old’s success also means India has won a medal in wrestling in the last five Olympics. In 2008 Sushilkumar won a bronze medal and upgraded it to silver at&nbsp;the 2012 London Games along Yogeshwar Dutt. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze while Ravi Dahiya won a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics (2020).

India’s Vinesh Phogat will have to wait for another day as the verdict for her Paris Olympics disqualification was postponed to Tuesday (Aug 13). Vinesh, on Thursday, filed a petition in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for her disqualification from the women’s 50kg freestyle category gold medal match after she was found overweight during the official weigh-in. The CAS which was set to deliver the verdict on Saturday is now likely to be delivered on Tuesday.

Phogat was discharged from the hospital after recuperating from dehydration for trying to lose weight ahead of the final.

As things stand, Vinesh can still retain remote hopes of winning a silver medal having filed the petition at the CAS. Her disqualification also meant that she finished bottom of the rankings and was not eligible for any medal despite winning the semifinal bout. The semifinal win at the Paris Olympics was also her last professional match. The 29-year-old Indian wrestler also announced that she is retiring from the sport with the Paris Olympics being her last official tournament.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said at the Paris Games on Saturday he will not seek to remain in charge for a third term.

"New times are calling for new leaders," the 70-year-old German lawyer, who has been in charge since 2013, told a session of IOC members in the French capital.

Bach said he was asked to stay in his role but insisted he would not attempt to extend his mandate by changing the Olympic charter that limits the president to a maximum of 12 years in the role.

His successor will be elected in 2025.

The jostling to succeed Bach will now begin, with some well-informed IOC watchers tipping Zimbabwean former swimmer Kirsty Coventry for the role.

'Very proud to be on the podium': Neeraj Chopra pens emotional note after Paris Olympics silver medal

Canada won the men’s Olympic 4x100m relay for the second time on Friday after hot favourites the United States messed up a changeover yet again and were disqualified.

Andre de Grasse ran a superb last leg to bring the Tokyo silver medallists home in 37.50 seconds for a second gold in the event following their 1996 success.

Akani Simbine, the nearly man of the individual 100 metres, also ran a terrific last leg to get South Africa silver in an African record 37.57, as did Zharnel Hughes to earn Britain bronze in 37.61.

Canada, running in the outside lane, were led off well by Aaron Brown. Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney kept them in contention with slick changeovers regularly honed under respected coach Glenroy Gilbert who was a member of the victorious 1996 squad.

However, once all the last-leg runners had the baton in hand, it was Japan leading from Italy, who had used Tokyo 100m champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs on the second leg.

De Grasse, the Tokyo gold medallist over 200, Simbine, who has an incredible six fourth or fifth place finishes in individual global 100s, and Hughes, all tore past them, with Canada doing just enough to win the race.

<h2>DE GRASSE DELIGHT</h2>

"It feels pretty amazing," De Grasse told reporters. "To be out with these guys, my brothers, I’ve been with them since the beginning of time and it feels good to bring it to fruition."

"The individuals didn’t go our way but when we come together we’re a real strong team. You can never count us out, we feel great," Brown said.

Crossing the line way behind was individual bronze medallist Fred Kerley, who was involved in the botched changeover that saw them fail to make the final at the last Olympics.

He was not the guilty party this time, however, as the damage was done much earlier.

Christian Coleman gave the U.S. a great start but ended up virtually colliding with Kenny Bednarek, the 200m silver medallist, at the first handover.

"It just didn’t happen," said Coleman, the familiar U.S. lament over the years as they repeatedly pay the price for not prioritising the event as other nations do.

"We practised a lot. Me and Kenny have been on the team a few times, and we felt really confident going out there. It’s part of the sport," Coleman added.

"We wanted to do it, we wanted to bring it home, we knew we had the speed to do it but this is a risk-reward type of thing."

The U.S. failure was the latest in a long series in an event they have won 15 times - 13 more than any other nation - but not since 2000, when they have only one silver medal from 2004 to show for their efforts.

Since 1995, in the Olympics and World Championships, the U.S. have now had 11 dropped batons, disqualifications or bans, leading former American sprinting great Carl Lewis to let rip once again.

"It is time to blow up the system. This continues to be completely unacceptable," said Lewis, who won two Olympic and three world championship 4x100m golds.

"It is clear that EVERYONE at USATF is more concerned with relationships than winning. No athlete should step on the track and run another relay until this program is changed from top to bottom."

Hughes and third-leg runner Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake were in the British team that finished second in Tokyo, but were later stripped of the medal due to a doping offence committed by teammate CJ Ujah.

Spain secured the gold medal in the Olympic men's football tournament after substitute Sergio Camello scored twice in extra time to earn a dramatic 5-3 win over hosts France in a nail-biting final at Parc des Princes on Friday.

The teams were locked at 3-3 at the end of normal time but Camello scored 10 minutes into the extra period and again at the end to earn Spain their first Olympic men's football title since 1992 when La Roja claimed the gold medal on home soil.

France had mounted an incredible comeback after going 3-1 down to send the game to extra time as Maghnes Akliouche pulled a goal back in the 79th before a VAR review awarded the hosts a penalty that Jean-Philippe Mateta converted in stoppage time.

Spain rallied in the first half after Enzo Millot opened the scoring for France in the 12th minute by scoring three goals in 10 minutes to get within touching distance of the title thanks to a Fermin Lopez double and superb free-kick from Alex Baena.

"It is something beautiful, but above all I'm happy for the players, for the way they achieved the win" Spain coach Santi Denia told reporters. "It was an amazing match against a high-level French team. I'm proud also of the model of play we represent."

France's Millot had scored early by pouncing on a loose ball in the box to fire into the top left corner after a poor attempted block by Spanish goalkeeper Arnau Tenas.

Spain equalised six minutes later when the unmarked Lopez passed the ball into the net first-time and the Barcelona midfielder gave his side the lead with his second in the 25th.

Baena curled his free kick into the top left corner just before the half hour but France made it 3-2 11 minutes from time through Akliouche's close-range touch after a set piece.

<h2>Unexpected Hero</h2>

As Spain looked set to celebrate winning the title, the drama really began when the referee was called to the TV screen to check on a foul by Benat Turrientes on fellow substitute Arnaud Kalimuendo in the penalty area.

A spot kick was awarded and Mateta equalised with his sixth goal of the tournament to send the French fans into raptures.

Spain's Turrientes then hit the bar with a fierce drive before the referee blew the whistle at the end of 90 minutes.

In extra time, with Spain having already taken off Lopez and Baena, Thierry Henry's French team pushed for a winner.

But it was Spain's Camello who scored by lobbing the ball on the run over the stranded Restes before sealing the win after a brilliant save by the keeper in the final seconds.

"(Camello) has been a hard worker since day one, he deserved his double" Baena said. "He knew he was going to be a substitute but ended being the most important player for us and found a reward.

"I wish the summer never ends," said the midfielder, who also won the European Championship with Spain last month. "I'm so happy I get to make history with Spain. To win you have to suffer, especially against France in France."

Paris Games 2024: Spain continue purple patch with Olympic gold against France in thriller

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif defied a major gender controversy to win gold at the Paris Olympics on Friday in front of a pulsating Roland Garros crowd that roared her to victory. Khelif claimed a unanimous points decision win over China's Yang Liu in the women's 66kg final and was paraded around the arena on a team member's shoulders.

Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who together with Khelif was disqualified from last year's world championships after failing gender eligibility testing, fights in the women's 57kg final on Saturday.

"I'm very happy. For eight years this has been my dream and I'm now the Olympic champion and gold medallist," said Khelif, 25. "I've worked for eight years, no sleep, eight years tired. Now I'm Olympic champion."

There were large numbers of Algerian fans at the 15,000-seat Court Philippe Chatrier, usually home to Grand Slam tennis but instead there to witness one of the most controversial athletes at the Games.

Standing 1.79 metres (5ft 9in), Khelif had enjoyed a height and strength advantage over the three opponents she comfortably dismantled on her way to the final.

Yang was a different proposition, the 32-year-old being nearly as tall and having pedigree as a world champion.

Loud cheers went up when Khelif entered the arena, shadow-boxing her way towards the ring as chants of "Imane, Imane" rang out.

Khelif dictated most of the first round from the centre of the ring and unloaded a flurry of punches on Yang two-thirds of the way through to take the early initiative.

The second round started in the same way, with Khelif's punches appearing to carry more snap, power and menace.

The Algerian was ahead on all the judges' scorecards heading into the third and final round, and she just needed to avoid serious trouble to claim gold.

The two embraced at the bell, and after Khelif's comprehensive victory was confirmed, she did a jig in the centre of the ring and thumped her chest.

"I want to thank all the people who have come to support me," said Khelif, after winning her country's second gold in Paris. "All the people from Algeria and all the people at my base. I want to thank all the team, my coach. Thank you so much."

<h2>What's the controversy?</h2>

Khelif and Lin both fought at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago but there was no controversy at the time and neither won a medal.

Both were thrown out of last year's world championships, which was run by the Russian-led International Boxing Association (IBA), but were cleared to compete in Paris.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has overseen the sport at the Games because of concerns over the IBA's running of boxing, including questions over its finances, ethics and judging of bouts.

The gender controversy ignited in the French capital when Khelif defeated Angela Carini in 46 seconds in her opening bout, the Italian reduced to tears and abandoning the fight after suffering a badly hurt nose.

The IBA's Kremlin-linked president Umar Kremlev claimed at a chaotic press conference this week that Khelif and Lin had undergone "genetic testing that shows that these are men".

The IOC has leapt to the defence of both boxers, with president Thomas Bach saying they were born and raised as women, and have passports saying that.

Neither is known to identify as transgender, and they have enjoyed strong support back home.
