Taliban voice concern on unrest in Pakistan, urge Islamabad to hold dialogue as PTI protests grow

Pakistan is currently experiencing protests by Imran Khan's supporters in many parts of the country. The protests started on May 9 after the arrest of Khan. He was subsequently released on bail.

Protesters stormed military installations, including the house of a top general in Lahore, which was set ablaze. Thousands of people, most of them Khan's supporters, have been rounded up since.

On Friday (May 26), civilian authorities said that they had handed over 33 suspects who will be tried in military courts

"The accused who are being handed over to the military are those who trespassed and entered very sensitive defense installations," Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told reporters as per Reuters.

Military courts are closed to outsiders, and no media is allowed. Rights groups have criticised the secretive nature of the process.

<h2>Economic crisis fuels protests</h2>

The political protests wouldn't have come at a worse time for Pakistan as it is going through worst economic crisis in decades. The effects on the economy and budget of common people are fuelling the unrest.&nbsp;

Dollar reserves have dwindled to only USD 4.4 billion. It is enough for only three weeks of import. The country is talking with International Monetary Fund (IMF) for bailout but the talks have stalled since November last year.

"Right now, everyone is so affected by the economic crisis that they feel the need to come out on the streets," said 27-year-old doctor Shahab Afzal as quoted by AFP.

"You can't even afford the basics," he said at a pro-Khan protest in the eastern city of Lahore.

Official data says that food inflation has soared to nearly 50 per cent in April.

"The sense of economic deprivation is the rocket fuel for Imran Khan's anti-government movement," said analyst Mosharraf Zaidi.&nbsp;

Zaidi was quoted by AFP.

"It creates room for hyper-growth of his support when you have trouble feeding your children."

'Resign and go home': Pakistan's minister tells president via tweet for meeting foreign diplomats

Jai Parkash, a renowned Hindu leader and minority member of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, resigned on Friday, becoming the latest politician to quit the former prime minister's party in the aftermath of the May 9 attack on military installations and government buildings.

Following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party chairman, Imran Khan, on May 9, violent protests erupted in various locations across the nation, resulting in the destruction of several government-owned properties, reports news agency PTI.

Imran Khan supporters stormed the Pakistan Army's General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, while the Corps Commander House in Lahore was set on fire.

In the 2018 general election, Jai Parkash was elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of the PTI party on a reserved seat for minorities.

In a statement to the media on Friday, the PTI minority wing president strongly criticised the May 9 protests, saying, "Pakistan exists because of the army, and we exist because of Pakistan."

"I had no intention to leave the party till May 8," he was quoted as saying by Samaa TV, adding that he was quitting without any pressure.

On Monday, PTI's former Sindh governor Imran Ismail said that Jai Parkash was abducted from his home by "40 masked men."

Jai Parkash's resignation is the latest in a string of prominent PTI lawmakers to quit.

Mubeen Khilji, a provincial minister in the PTI administration, resigned from the former prime minister's party earlier on Friday.&nbsp;Khilji stated at a news conference that he was leaving the PTI due to the May 9 violence.

"We wanted peaceful protests," he remarked, criticising the destruction that followed Imran Khan's imprisonment.

Police have confirmed 10 deaths in the violent skirmishes, however Imran Khan's party claimed 40 of its workers were killed in firing by security forces.

On Monday, the senior military brass committed to bring the arsonists who assaulted the civil and military institutions to justice through prosecution under strict Pakistani laws such as the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secrets Act.

Over 7,000 PTI workers have been detained across Pakistan, with 4,000 of them from Punjab state.

Imran Khan, a 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, was ousted from office in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he said was part of a US-led conspiracy to destabilise him due to his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China, and Afghanistan.

Popular Hindu leader of Imran Khan's PTI quits party, slams violent protests

Pakistan's political turmoil continues to escalate as the crisis-hit nation woke up on Thursday to more destruction, debris, and roadblocks. The government deployed the military to quell riots as former prime minister Imran Khan was remanded in custody for eight days on fresh corruption charges after his dramatic arrest, prompting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party's supporters to come on the streets and protest.&nbsp;

Amid the unrest, the Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged the PTI to "not make matters worse". He also called for an end to violent protests in the country. Bhutto said, "Their reaction is completely unjustified. It is violent and has created a situation in which serious conversations need to be had. But the only advice I can give to PTI is that what you have done is done, those who were involved will have to give answers."&nbsp;

He asked the PTI to "abide by the rule of law and Constitution". In a press conference in Karachi, he added, "Accept that you will engage with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as citizens and not as terrorists."&nbsp;

The protests have triggered panic situation nationwide, with common people reeling amid the worsening crisis. As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Zardad Khan, a resident of Peshawar, where a radio building was torched by protesters, said: "Protests are necessary but they must be peaceful. All this destruction should be avoided. The people getting injured or killed on both sides are our own people, our brothers. We should protest peacefully. It is in our own interest."&nbsp;

Authorities have arrested more than 1,600 miscreants in Punjab for vandalism and also took senior leaders of Khan's party into custody. The Islamabad police said that PTI leaders, including former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who's vice chairman of PTI were arrested&nbsp;for "inciting violent protests".

Two other senior PTI leaders, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry, were arrested on Wednesday. The party has challenged Khan's arrest in the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

Amid the unrest, the Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged the PTI to "not make matters worse". He also called for an end to violent protests in the country. Bhutto said, "Their reaction is completely unjustified. It is violent and has created a situation in which serious conversations need to be had. But the only advice I can give to PTI is that what you have done is done, those who were involved will have to give answers." He asked the PTI to "abide by the rule of law and Constitution". In a press conference in Karachi, he added, "Accept that you will engage with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as citizens and not as terrorists." As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Zardad Khan, a resident of Peshawar, where a radio building was torched by protesters, said: "Protests are necessary but they must be peaceful. All this destruction should be avoided. The people getting injured or killed on both sides are our own people, our brothers. We should protest peacefully. It is in our own interest." Authorities have arrested more than 1,600 miscreants in Punjab for vandalism and also took senior leaders of Khan's party into custody. The Islamabad police said that PTI leaders, including former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who's vice chairman of PTI were arrested for "inciting violent protests". Two other senior PTI leaders, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry, were arrested on Wednesday. The party has challenged Khan's arrest in the Supreme Court. A statement on Qureshi's Twitter profile quoted him as saying: "There is a very real propaganda campaign against PTI, attempting to position us as violent creators of terror. The nation must continue with peaceful protests wherever they can". Imran Khan vows legal action against security officials involved in raid on his Lahore residence

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan said on Thursday (March 9) that his party,&nbsp;the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's problems increased after the appointment of new army chief General Asim Munir. Speaking to BBC, Khan said that the PTI was expecting a change after the new army chief came in. But there was no change and in fact, hardships increased, Khan said.&nbsp;

On being asked about his intention to meet General Munir, the former prime minister said it was being reported that he wanted an audience with the army chief, and he did not need the establishment if he wanted to speak to Munir.&nbsp;

The PTI chairperson's comments come after media reports said that Khan did reach out to General Munir but was rebuffed.

Citing unnamed sources, Geo News reported that General Munir told businessmen earlier this week that Imran Khan sent him a message seeking a meeting, but he told the former prime minister that it was not his job as army chief to meet politicians.&nbsp;

Munir also asserted that he would neither interfere in politics nor would play any role in it.&nbsp;

Imran Khan has been demanding snap elections in Pakistan since he was ousted last year. The current government, however, has rejected the demand and said that elections would be held as scheduled later this year.&nbsp;

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has distributed burqas among female students in a girls' model school in Cheena village of Rustam Valley.

The authorities here, with the help of funds provided by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) former district council member, Muzaffar Shah, distributed 69 burqas among students in the girls' school, The Express Tribune reported.

"I had decided to purchase chadors for the female students, but after consultation with local leaders, I bought the burqas," Shah was quoted as saying.

He said all the burqas were worth Rs 100,000, adding that they were distributed free of cost to students of Government Girls Middle School, Cheena.

The village councilor also said that his action was inspired by the recent notification by the adviser to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister on Elementary and Secondary Education, Ziaullah Bangash, directing girls to observe 'purdah'.

"I took the decision after the recent notification issued of our adviser on education to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister and the act is purely for providing a secured education environment to the female students in the area," he said.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government had made it mandatory for female students of government-run schools to cover themselves up in the province's educational institutions, Bangash had earlier said in mid-September.

The order was first circulated in Haripur district, where the district education officer asked all principals and headmistresses of public schools to ensure that girl students wear an abaya, gown or chador.

However, hours after the administration made it mandatory for female students of government-run schools to cover themselves up, chief minister Mahmood Khan issued directives to withdraw the notification, saying it was issued without the government's consent.

The National Assembly of Pakistan on Monday adopted a resolution to prevent forced conversions in the country.

The resolution seeks to criminalise forced conversions and recommends an imprisonment of seven years and a fine of up to one million Pakistan rupees for anyone found indulging in forced conversion.

The resolution is expected to be passed formally as law in about two weeks. The resolution is currently being examined by a sub-committee.

This resolution has been adopted to deter forced <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/forced-conversion-of-hindu-girls-in-pakistan-leaves-minority-community-alarmed-19213">conversions of Christians</a>, Hindus or minorities of any other religion&nbsp;in the country.&nbsp;

Besides Dr Vankwani, PTI legislators Lal Malhi and Shunila Ruth, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawmaker Dr Darshan and Pakistan Peoples Party's Ramesh Lal had signed the resolution.

The five-point resolution calls for immediate passage of the bill against forced conversions, which had been unanimously passed by the Sindh Assembly in 2016 and then reverted due to pressure of extremist elements, from all the legislatures.

Pakistan Muslim League (N) tried to pass a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/religious-minorities-vulnerable-in-pakistan-pak-daily-206104">similar resolution</a> in the past and it was vigorously opposed by its allies and the opposition.&nbsp;

The resolution comes against the backdrop of increased pressure from the judiciary and rights groups from the country amid the nationwide outrage over the alleged forced conversion of two teenage girls from the Hindu community.

The cities where such cases occurred frequently included Umerkot, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Karachi, Tando Allahyar, Kashmore and Ghotki," said the 335-page report titled 'State of Human Rights in 2018'.

Last year, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had said during an election campaign that his party's agenda was to uplift the various religious groups across Pakistan and that they would take effective measures to prevent forced marriages of Hindu girls.

Hindus form the biggest minority community in Pakistan.

Saudi Arabia is set to join the multibillion-dollar project China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC) as a third major economic partner.
