Thanking the lawmakers for supporting him, Sharif said&nbsp;"It's a victory of righteousness, and evil has been defeated."&nbsp;

The 70-year-old is the&nbsp;leader of the centrist Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N).&nbsp;He is the brother of former Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif, and has served as the chief minister of Punjab province thrice.

Shehbaz Sharif&nbsp;was elected to the National Assembly in 1990. Following a military coup that deposed the government of Pakistan in 1999, Shehbaaz had to spent several years in exile in Saudi Arabia.

He returned to Pakistan in 2007 and was nominated for the post of the president of PML-N following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif from holding office.

On Thursday last week, the Pakistan Supreme Court had ordered that the no-confidence motion, which was disallowed by the deputy speaker last Sunday, be held by 10: 30 a.m. on Saturday (April 9).

In a unanimous 5-0 verdict, the top court bench, led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, quashed the presidential order to dissolve Parliament, which was done at the behest of Khan.

Ahead of the voting in&nbsp;Pakistan's parliament, Imran Khan said&nbsp;"The man who has 16 billion and 8 billion rupees of corruption cases, whoever selects and elects the Prime Minister cannot be a bigger insult to the country. We are resigning from the National Assembly."&nbsp;

“Shahbaz Sharif will be a slave of America… he said in a TV Programme yesterday that beggars are not choosers… what does this mean? Does that mean that the poor and beggars are slaves. Ask him (Shehbaz Sharif) who brought Pakistan to such a state. Just because we are poor, should we be slaves?” he added.

In response, Shahbaz Sharif said, ''We did not invite any foreign power and neither are we involved in any foreign conspiracy.''&nbsp;

He further denied receiving any letter from Pakistan's President Arif Alvi regarding the appointment of an interim prime minister.

In 2019,&nbsp;National Accountability Bureau had seized nearly two dozen properties belonging to Shehbaz&nbsp;Sharif&nbsp;and his son Hamza, accusing them of money laundering.

He was arrested and detained in September 2020. However, he was released six months later on bail for a trial which is still pending.

Since the independence of Pakistan in 1947, there have been four military coups in the country. It has spent over three decades under military rule.&nbsp;

No prime minister has completed a full five-year tenure in Pakistan's 75-year history. While the longest tenure for a prime minister is four years and two months, the shortest tenure is two weeks.

Imran becomes first Pak prime minister to lose no-trust vote

With Imran Khan booted out of the office after losing the no-confidence motion, the battle for the new premiership is set to begin tomorrow (April 11) when Pakistan’s National Assembly (NA) will be reconvened to elect a new prime minister.

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has nominated former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as PM candidate, while the joint opposition has named Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Shehbaz Sharif, the brother of former PM Nawaz Sharif.

Both of them filed their nomination papers earlier today on Sunday which are being scrutinised.

According to Dawn newspaper, the NA secretariat had earlier issued a statement delaying the timing of submitting the nomination papers but later retracted it after the opposition members condemned the move.

According to the secretariat, the PTI had requested to delay the timings, reports the newspaper.

The National Assembly will reconvene on Monday at 2 pm (local time) where the voting will take place to elect a new prime minister.

Meanwhile, PTI Leader Fawad Chaudhry has said that if Shahbaz Sharif's nomination papers are accepted then they will be resigning en mass from the assemblies.

PTI also announced that they will stage protests across Pakistan today evening (Sunda), which will be led by Imran Khan.

On Saturday midnight, Khan was ousted from the prime minister’s office after the NA passed a no-confidence motion following a debate that lasted for more than 12 hours.

The session was chaired by Ayaz Sadiq — a member of the panel of chairs — after speaker Asad Qasier resigned from his post.

In the 342-member house, a majority of 174 MPs voted in favour of the resolution of vote of no-confidence against Imran Khan.

Once the voting was concluded and the result was announced, Opposition leaders delivered their victory speeches.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday plunged Pakistan into a constitutional crisis by getting the president to dissolve parliament and seeking fresh elections on a day when a session to hold a no-trust vote against his government was abruptly adjourned.

In what appeared to be premeditated moves, the National Assembly session was dismissed by deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri as unconstitutional.

Citing Article 5 of the constitution, Suri dismissed the session soon after the ruling party's Fawad Chowdhury spoke against the no-confidence motion, calling it a "foreign conspiracy."

Interestingly, the deputy speaker himself was filling in for Speaker Asad Qaiser against whom the opposition parties filed a no-confidence motion earlier in the day.&nbsp;

The game-changing move by Khan, a cricketer-turned-prime minister, was slammed by opposition parties, who vowed to challenge it in the Supreme Court, thus making it a constitutional crisis.

Bilawal Bhutto, Pakistan People’s Party leader, also vowed to hold a sit-in in parliament against Khan's swift and unexpected play, adding that opposition lawyers will seek Supreme Court's intervention and seek a verdict on Sunday itself.&nbsp;

Is it constitutional for the president to dismiss the parliament and call elections, when just days ago the opposition appeared to have the sufficient numbers to win the no-trust vote after the MQM-P party switched sides?&nbsp;

Can a prime minister facing a no-trust motion seek to dismiss the very House that was set to vote on it?&nbsp;

Another looming factor is the spectre of another Army rule. Democracy in Pakistan has been a tortuous lab experiment that could not find the right solution even after 75 years. Whenever such political crises occurred, the Army had stepped in, leading to the series of dictatorships that the impoverished South Asian country witnessed intermittently over the years.

In a short address to the nation, Imran said: "I want to say -&nbsp;do not worry,&nbsp;God is watching over Pakistan."

"Prepare for elections. No corrupt forces will decide what the future of the country will be. When the assemblies will be dissolved, the procedure for the next elections and the caretaker government will begin," the Pakistan prime minister told the nation.
