India men's cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is open to the idea of playing a bilateral Test series against arch-rivals Pakistan. Sharma said the series would be a closely fought affair and that he only wants to focus on cricket, not other affairs. Rohit was speaking on the "Club Prairie Fire" podcast where former England captain Michael Vaughan quizzed him on the possibility of the India-Pakistan series. "Don't you think India playing Pakistan regularly will be fantastic for Test cricket?" asked Vaughan. Rohit responded saying: "I totally believe that! They are a good team. Last test match played between India and Pakistan was way back I think in 2006 or 2008 (2007), where Wasim Jaffar got a double hundred in Kolkata." "I would love to. At the end of the day, we want to be in the contest. I think it will be a great contest between the two sides. We anyway play them in the ICC tournaments. So, it doesn't even matter. It's pure cricket that I am looking at. I am not interested in anything else. It's just pure cricket. A battle between bat and ball. It will be a great contest so why not." CA offers to host series In February, Cricket Australia (CA) offered to host a bilateral series between the two countries if the BCCI and PCB agree to play each other. , "I think anyone that was here for the India-Pakistan game at the MCG, it will go down as one of the most memorable occasions, not just sporting occasions, that I've ever been to. So people want to see that contest. We would love to host that if the opportunity arose. If we can play a role, we'd love to play a role," said CA chief executive Nick Hockley referring to the 2022 T20 World Cup match between the two rivals. 'Would love to': Indian captain Rohit Sharma on playing bilateral Test series against Pakistan

Azhar Mahmood believes other teams should not write off Pakistan ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will kickoff in June in West Indies and USA. At present, a lot of changes have taken place in the leadership group within the senior national team. Babar Azam has once again been appointed as the white-ball skipper whereas Mahmood was recently roped in as the head coach ahead of his side's five-match T20I series versus New Zealand at home. Mahmood opined that Babar &amp; Co. have performed well in recent ICC tournaments even though they have not won a major title since 2017.&nbsp;

Ahead of the NZ T20Is, which starts on April 18 in Rawalpindi, Mahmood said in a press conference, "Our strength is pure talent and skill. We’ve performed decently on the world stage in the format, and we’ve recently featured in the World Cup finals (2022) and semi-finals (2021). We know we haven’t won a big tournament since 2009 (Men’s T20 World Cup) or the Champions Trophy (2017). But you can never write off the Pakistan team, especially in the T20 format."

He further opined, "We’ve the depth and strength, but there are always areas for improvement. Looking at those aspects, especially in the areas that we’ve lagged behind, is something that I’ve worked on."

Mahmood added, "So till the World Cup, we’d like to develop a structure and game plan, to give role clarity to players. In our squad, we’ve young talent Irfan Niazi, Azam (Khan) and Usman Khan. So definitely, we’ve to give these players a look. We need to use our bench strength. But at the same time, from the discussion I’ve had, we should be aware of our best XI when we play our first game on 6 June in the T20 World Cup."

Pakistan have a mix of young and experienced players in their squad for the home T20Is versus the second-stringed Black Caps. They have added Imad Wasim and Mohammed Amir, who came out of international retirements, whereas the squad also comprises debutants such as&nbsp;Irfan Niazi and Usman Khan.&nbsp;

The one-time winners will be eager to gel well and get some victories under the new leadership group before heading into the T20 WC. They are placed in Group A along with arch-rivals India, USA, Canada and Ireland.&nbsp;

‘You can never write off Pakistan’: Azhar Mahmood issues warning to other teams ahead of T20 World Cup

Newly re-appointed Pakistan white-ball captain Babar Azam has reflected on his first trip to India during the ODI World Cup. Babar expressed surprise at the support he received from the Indian crowd during the tournament whilst adding that the crowd was mostly 'blue' whenever they played.&nbsp;

India locked horns with Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad where the hosts once again came out on top, maintaining their flawless winning record in the ODI World Cups.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"That was a different moment. Whenever we looked around the stadium, it was all blue. If you are playing in India then it makes sense that the crowds will be with the home team," Babar said on Zalmi TV podcast.

The Pakistan skipper added that despite the massive support for India, his team also received a 'lot of love' from the crowd.&nbsp;

“But even we got good support in different places. We received a lot of love from the crowds and they appreciated us. India vs Pakistan games are highly rated and many people look forward to this. It was a different experience for us,” Babar added.

Notably, it was after the disastrous World Cup campaign where the Pakistan team failed to progress further from the group stage&nbsp;that PCB took the call to sack Babar from his position as the captain in all three formats of the game. However, a little more than four months later, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed Babar was replacing Shaheen Afridi as the T20I captain. The decision was set in motion after Pakistan lost the T20I series 1-4 to New Zealand and fast-tracked following Afridi's poor handling of his PSL team which won only one out of the 10 matches.&nbsp;

'Don't test my patience': Shaheen Afridi shares cryptic Insta Story amid ongoing Pakistan captaincy saga

Star Pakistan seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi is unhappy and dissatisfied with the lack of communication and clarity over his recent sacking as the T20I captain. Afridi met PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Monday (April 1) in Kakul, where the Pakistan team is undergoing a fitness-related training camp, with reports suggesting that no constructive talks took place. The PCB, however, posted a photo of Shaheen shaking Naqvi’s hands following the meeting.

Although PCB’s statement had no mention of Afridi or his catch-up with the board’s chairman, it read that Naqvi interacted with all the 29 players, commending them for their dedication and active participation in the camp. Naqvi also pressed on his satisfaction over players attaining top fitness levels.

"The chairman also took the opportunity to interact with the players, personally commending them for their dedication and active participation in the camp. He expressed satisfaction over the players' enthusiasm and commitment towards enhancing their fitness levels," the PCB statement read.

Drama grows within PCB surrounding captaincy saga as Shaheen Afridi’s concerns not addressed

Former Pakistan T20I captain Shaheen Shah Afridi is upset with PCB for putting out his fake quotes on Babar Azam’s reappointment as the new white-ball captain, something he never contributed to in the first place. As per the latest reports, Afridi, who was named Pakistan’s new T20I captain following Babar’s departure as all-format skipper in November last year, is said to be meeting PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi regarding this matter on Monday (April 1).

A&nbsp;statement released by the PCB, attributing to Shaheen, reads,&nbsp;"I will always cherish the memories and the opportunity. As a team player, it is my duty to back our captain, Babar Azam. I have played under his captaincy and have nothing but respect for him. I will try to help him on and off the field. We are all one. Our aim is the same, to help Pakistan become the best team in the world."

Shaheen claims to be contributing nothing in regards to Babar becoming Pakistan’s white-ball captain once again.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, change in the leadership has caused quite a stir in Pakistan cricket. After PCB asked Babar to step aside from the captaincy following a dismal 2023 World Cup show in India, they appointed Shaheen (T20Is) and Shan Masood (Test captain) as new leaders in their respective formats.&nbsp;

However, after just one failed international assignment and PSL 2024, Shaheen was removed as the captain in the shortest format.

Shahid Afridi, a former Pakistan legend and Shaheen’s father-in-law, also commented on the matter, saying he was surprised to see a sudden change in the leadership group, considering the T20 World Cup is just around the corner. Although he sounded miffed with PCB’s call, he congratulated Babar on his reappointment as the captain.

“I am surprised by the decision by very experienced cricketers in the selection committee. I still believe that if change was necessary then Rizwan was the best choice! But since now the decision has been made I offer my full support and best wishes to team Pakistan and Babar Azam,” Afridi wrote on X.&nbsp;

Soon after that, a lot happened within their cricket, with two former players – Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir, announcing unretirement to remain available for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA. The board also reappointed Babar as the new captain for ODIs and T20Is.

Although he sounded miffed with PCB’s call, he congratulated Babar on his reappointment as the captain. “I am surprised by the decision by very experienced cricketers in the selection committee. I still believe that if change was necessary then Rizwan was the best choice! But since now the decision has been made I offer my full support and best wishes to team Pakistan and Babar Azam,” Afridi wrote on X. Babar will lead Pakistan against New Zealand in home T20Is in April before flying to the UK for the T20 series against Ireland and England just ahead of the 20-team tournament.

Shaheen Afridi to hold talks with PCB chairman over ‘fake quotes on Babar’s return’ as white-ball captain

In a major twist involving the leadership group in Pakistan Cricket, star batter Babar Azam has been&nbsp;re-appointed as the new white-ball captain, the board’s chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed in a statement. Babar has replaced ace seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi as the T20I captain, while the board is yet to announce&nbsp;an ODI skipper following Babar’s removal as all-format skipper post-2023 World Cup.

In a video posted on Pakistan Cricket’s social media handles, the PCB chairman is seen speaking with Babar about taking over the ODI and T20I captaincy.

Upon being appointed as the T20I captain, with credentials of helping his franchise, Lahore Qalandars, win back-to-back PSL titles, Shaheen failed to replicate his magic in Pakistan colours, losing 1-4 to New Zealand on an away tour in his first assignment. With captaincy pressure released off Shaheen’s shoulders, the left-arm seamer can return to focusing on his bowling ahead of the tournament. PCB reappoints Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white-ball captain

Pakistan-born UAE cricketer Usman Khan could face severe repercussions if found guilty of contract breach after getting included in the 29-man Pakistan squad for the training camp with the Pakistan Army in Kakul for a fitness boost. Usman seemed to have invited legal trouble, with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) investigating the matter.

The ECB is reportedly studying the possibilities of a contract breach by Usman with the UAE board and several franchise-based T10/T20 tournaments where he played as a local UAE player.

The review’s decision, which will come in a fortnight, could carry major ramifications for the top-order batter. If found guilty, Usman could face a ban from UAE league cricket, which further restricts him from featuring in ILT20 and T10 Abu Dhabi League.

Also, in case of a contract breach, Usman could face sanctions surrounding his work permit, under which he lived in the country to complete the residency requirement to qualify to play international cricket for UAE. Usman still has 14 months left to satisfy the criteria.

Meanwhile, Usman is confident he had not breached&nbsp;any contract, stating that it included an exit clause with a 30-day notice period.

Although Usman is yet to confirm whether he accepted PCB’s offer of playing international cricket for Pakistan following a stunning PSL 2024, he admits that the offer made was enticing.

However, in an interview with ESPNcricinfo ahead of the PSL 2024 final, Usman turned down the chance of representing Pakistan on the international stage, citing the ease at which he can play in different franchise-based leagues worldwide as a UAE player and the advantages of being considered a local player in the UAE’s shorter-format leagues.

The situation seems to have escalated in the other direction since.

Is Pakistan-bound Usman Khan in legal trouble over contract breach? UAE Cricket Board investigates

Two no-more former Pakistan cricketers, Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, who recently announced their decisions to come out of retirement for the 2024 T20 World Cup, have been included in the 29-man squad for the training camp with Pakistan Army. UAE-bound Usman Khan is also added to the team&nbsp;for the camp in Kakul from March 26 to April 8.

Amir and Wasim took to social media last week to announce their decisions to get back in reckoning for the 20-team tournament in the Caribbean and the USA in June. Both had retired from international cricket earlier but were active in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), representing their respective franchises in the recently concluded season.

While Amir just returned with eight wickets in PSL 2024, Wasim was the star performer for Islamabad United, guiding them to their third PSL title.

Besides this pair, seamer Haris Rauf is also part of the squad, with PCB reinstating him into the contract list. Earlier, following Rauf’s decision to deny a return to Test cricket for the Australia series and also for preferring franchise-based T20 Leagues over international cricket, the board released him from the contract list.

The inclusion of Pakistan-born UAE-based batter Usman Khan has raised eyebrows. With a clear intention of roping in Usman to play for Pakistan across all formats, he is called up to remain with the team in Kakul for the training camp.

Over the years, Wasim has picked 60 wickets in the CPL at an average of 18.88 and an economy of 6.20. The lanky spinner has featured in 66 T20Is for Pakistan, scoring 486 runs at a strike rate of 131.70 and picking 65 wickets with an economy of 6.26.

Former Pakistan cricketer Javed Miandad has stirred the cauldron of controversy by praising underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and describing him as someone who had done a "lot of Muslims" over the years.&nbsp;

Miandad's son Junaid is married to Dawood's daughter Mahrukh and the two families share close ties. The wedding took place in 2005 in Dubai&nbsp;with strict&nbsp;security arrangements in place.&nbsp;

“I have known him for a long time, from Dubai. It is an honour for me that his daughter married my son. My daughter-in-law is very well-educated; she studied in a convent school and went to a renowned university,” Miandad told&nbsp;journalist Hassan Nisar on the latter's YouTube channel.

The controversial batter said those outside had a flawed perception of the underworld don, his family and how they operated.&nbsp;

“Understanding the real Dawood Ibrahim is not easy. The way people think about the family, they are not like that,” remarked Miandad.

"He (Dawood) has done a lot for Muslims. It will be remembered for long," he added.

‘He has done a lot for Muslims’: Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad praises underworld don Dawood Ibrahim

Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah didn’t mince his words while opening up about the dressing room environment in the Pakistan Cricket Team. The right-arm seamer, who returned to competitive cricket following a lengthy layoff due to injury, revealed that a sense of insecurity of being replaced by someone new prevails among players in case they miss out on playing regular games or take rest.

Shah missed the 2023 World Cup in India due to a shoulder injury and remained on the sidelines for the remainder of the year, including missing the two tours Down Under (Tests against Australia and T20Is versus New Zealand).

Admitting to fear the same as new faces emerged on the scene across formats, Shah said in a chat with Cricwick,&nbsp;"Honestly, the main players are afraid of giving their bodies rest even when they know they need a break because the Pakistan cricket culture is such that if a new player comes in and performs in a match or two, you don't know if he will replace you permanently in the team." &nbsp;

"This fear does not allow players to rest because you are scared your careers could end there," the young bowler said.

Citing examples of different cultures in different teams, Shah pointed out that in some countries, the players are assured of their places in the side despite missing action for whatever reason, unlike in Pakistan.

<h2>Shah’s scary history of injuries</h2>

Regarded as perhaps the most sort-after emerging pacer in world cricket, Shah has a scary history of getting injured.&nbsp;

From staying away from cricket for nearly 14 months due to a back injury at 17, Shah has suffered shoulder injury twice in his career, most recently last year during the Asia Cup, after which he got sidelined for an indefinite period.

Shah last bowled in international cricket against India in the 2023 Asia Cup tie in Colombo, and upon feeling discomfort in his bowling arm, he never returned to playing for Pakistan for the rest of the year.

Explaining what happened that day, Shah said, "I had stiffness in my shoulder, but after warm-ups, it would get better, and I played through it. But during the Asia Cup, I had a tear and felt something tearing inside me."&nbsp;

The right-arm pacer underwent shoulder surgery in the UK, where the doctors informed him that the tear was 4-5 centimetres long.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Shah played for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League and could return to playing for Pakistan in the home series against New Zealand in April.

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson is believed to be a strong contender to take over as the head coach of Pakistan senior men's cricket team. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has accepted his remuneration demands, it is reported that the ODI World Cup winner is still not decided on the coaching job.

According to sources on the board, Watson has demanded a whopping $2 million annually, which is approximately 46 million rupees a month.&nbsp;Earlier, the likes of Mickey Arthur,&nbsp;Richard Pybus, Bob Woolmer, Geoff Lawson, Dav Whatmore and Grant Bradburn have also taken up the coaching role for Pakistan, however, none of them have been paid as much as Watson has demanded.

"He has a young family in Australia and also has commitments in the USA Major League. So, he is weighing his options as the board wants him to spend maximum time in Pakistan helping them also discover and groom talent at the domestic level,"&nbsp;the source said.

It is being reported that Watson -- who doesn't have the experience of coaching any international side -- is taking time to finalise the offer&nbsp;due to the frequent changes within the PCB and the coaching staff. Currently, the Aussie cricketer is busy coaching the Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 edition, who have qualified for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, PCB chief&nbsp;Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that he would want a foreign coaching setup in-line, who will enjoy&nbsp;the full backing of the board. Recently, Naqvi also revealed that the Pakistani players will train with the army to work on their fitness and strength going forward.

Former Pakistan speedster Wasim Akram has slammed Shaheen Afridi for being predictable with the ball following his flop show in match 28 of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 edition. On Sunday (March 10), Shaheen-led Lahore Qalandars locked horns with Quetta Gladiators and lost the clash while defending a moderate 166. While Shaheen impressed with a blistering 34-ball 55, promoting himself at No. 5, but failed in his primary job. The Lahore captain returned with figures of 4-0-41-2; failing to defend 14 off the final over as his side bowed out of the playoffs race.&nbsp;

Akram feels Shaheen has become very predictable for the batters, with the new as well as the old ball. Talking on A Sports, the legend said, "Even with the new ball, we all were watching it together, he was bowling half volleys. He needs to understand that batsmen now have understood that the first two balls from Shaheen will be yorkers. In the death he will either bowl slower cutter or will on the stumps around the wicket. Batsmen are prepared for it now."

Akram spoke on Pakistan T20I captain's knock and said, "Shaheen got runs. But their big two hitters Sikandar Raza (got five balls) and David Wiese didn’t get a chance." With Shaheen promoting himself up the order, he did a fine job but struggled in the last few deliveries. He reached his fifty in 28 balls but only managed five off the last six deliveries before falling for 55 (34). With him coming up, Raza hardly got a chance with the bat whereas power-hitter David Weise didn't even get a hit with the bat.

With only one win and eight losses from 10 games, Lahore are out of PSL 2024 and Shaheen-led squad will be eager to get past this season and comeback strongly next year. For Shaheen, he will now shift his focus on his bowling completely and work hard on it with the T20 World Cup 2024 edition to be held early this June.&nbsp;

Former Pakistan captain Mohammed Hafeez, who was recently sacked as Men in Green's&nbsp;director of cricket, has slammed the national side for poor fitness standards. Hafeez, in a recent interaction,&nbsp;has stated that the current Pakistani players do not have the fitness to play international cricket.

Hafeez was recently removed as the director of cricket for Pakistan after the senior team's woeful run Down Under, where they lost three Tests to Australia (0-3) and five T20Is in New Zealand (going down 1-4). Soon after his contract was not extended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the former all-rounder revealed, on X (formerly Twitter), that he will disclose the reason for Men in Green's recent failures.

Now, talking on A Sports, Hafeez ripped apart Pakistan's fitness culture and blamed former captain Babar Azam and ex-coach Mickey Arthur. "When we went to Australia, I told the players to take care of their fitness levels. I also asked the trainer about the fitness of the players. He told me a shocking thing that six months ago captain (Babar Azam) and Director of Cricket (Mickey Arthur) told me to stop checking the players on the fitness parameters and let them play the way they want," Hafeez said.

He added, "When the fat levels of the players were checked, the skin fold of all of them was high - for most players it was 1.5 times the limit. They were unfit and some of them couldn’t complete a 2 km trial run. The decision taken 6 months back overruled the set criteria for fitness. You will suffer defeats if the fitness is like that."

Hafeez also revealed that it took him two months to convince Babar&nbsp;to drop down to No. 3 spot in T20Is.&nbsp;

Hafeez said, "It took me about two months to convince Babar Azam that you have to do it for Pakistan and you are not the first one who's doing it. You are a great player, you are a wonderful player, and you play great cricket. However, you have to develop a Pakistan team. You and Rizwan are very good players, excellent players, but you are not the whole team."

"We need to develop a team and, for that, I want you to come, at number 3 because you have been playing this role in ODI cricket for the last six years, so it won't affect you. Technically, you are very solid. Thank you very much to him that he accepted this, and he played for Pakistan at No. 3 which obviously, I think is the best way to move," he further added.

In the recent past, nothing has clicked for Pakistan. They failed to enter the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, which led to Babar Azam's removal as captain. Following the ODI WC, Pakistan had a miserable tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Babar Azam, Mickey Arthur put fitness in backseat: Pakistan's former director of cricket Mohammad Hafeez

Pakistan seamer Naseem Shah has opened up on his first-ever battle with India great Virat Kohli during the 2022 Asia Cup in the UAE. Shah, who recovered from a shoulder injury suffered ahead of the 2023 World Cup, will feature for his new team in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) – Islamabad United. As PSL 2024 gets underway on Sunday (Feb 17), Islamabad will face defending champions Lahore Qalandars in the opener in Lahore.

Speaking on the Islamabad United podcast, Naseem recalled his T20I debut against India in Dubai, wherein he impressed with his new-ball exploits. Detailing about dealing with the pressure of a crowd favourite India-Pakistan game, Naseem said having played Tests and ODIs earlier helped calm his nerves.

“I have good memories of my T20I debut against India. India versus Pakistan is the most important match when it comes to the crowds and intensity on the field, and that was my debut match. I was naturally a bit nervous since it was my debut. But the good thing for me was that I had played a lot of cricket before; I had played Tests and ODIs, which helped me,” Naseem said.&nbsp;

In that game, Naseem picked two wickets, removing KL Rahul (in his first over) and getting rid of Suryakumar Yadav later. On taking on Virat Kohli in that contest, Naseem revealed he thought Kohli would go boom-boom from the ball one and, therefore, bowled two swinging cutters to the batting great.

“When Virat Kohli came into bat, I thought he would go hard. So, I bowled an in-swinger hoping that it might catch his pad, but he let it go. The next delivery, I bowled an out-swinger that caught the edge, but yeah, the catch got dropped. But it was a good experience because when you make your debut against a big team and under so much pressure, then you get a margin in other matches,” the 21-year-old seamer added.

On Thursday (Feb 15), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) terminated pacer Haris Rauf's central contract. The speedster has been severely penalised by the board, following a probe into his refusal to join Pakistan’s Test squad for their&nbsp;tour of Australia,&nbsp;early this year. Following a thorough hearing process conducted by a PCB committee, and taking into account&nbsp;the views of all stakeholders involved, Rauf’s central contract has been terminated from Dec&nbsp;1, 2023 and no NOC (No objection certificate) to play any foreign league will be granted up to June 30, 2024.&nbsp;

Rauf left PCB in a spot of bother in Nov 2023 when he opted out of the three-match Test series versus Australia despite&nbsp;assurance from the team management of&nbsp;managing his workload. As a result, Pakistan went ahead with an inexperienced pace attack, already&nbsp;without Naseem Shah, and lost the series 0-3. After his withdrawal, chief selector Wahab Riaz stated while announcing the squad, "He (Rauf) gave his consent, but later he changed his mind because he was worried about his fitness and the workload. His absence will affect the team combination. I was even ready to facilitate him had he not performed in Australia, but he didn't agree."

"The PCB states that playing for Pakistan is the ultimate honour and privilege for any sportsperson. Refusal to be part of Pakistan's Test squad in the absence of any medical report or justifiable reason is a material violation of the central contract," the statement added.

Despite all the hullabaloo, Rauf was granted the NOC to take part in Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 edition. The speedster was last seen in action during Pakistan's five T20Is versus the Kiwis&nbsp;in New Zealand in January.

Early in the day, PCB also parted ways with Mohammed Hafeez who acted as the senior men's team director during&nbsp;Pakistan's tour Down Under (comprising&nbsp;three Tests in Australia and five T20Is&nbsp;in New Zealand). Pakistan fell flat in&nbsp;both the series and returned with&nbsp;only a win in the final T20I versus the Kiwis.&nbsp;

After Hafeez's exit, PCB statement read, "The Pakistan Cricket Board extends heartfelt gratitude to Mohammad Hafeez, Director Pakistan men's cricket team, for his invaluable contributions."

PCB terminates pacer Haris Rauf's central contract! Here's why

Former Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur, who was part of the side during their 2023 ODI World Cup debacle, has pointed out that instability in the team structure has resulted in players focusing on their performances and spots, rather than team performance. Arthur recently resigned from his post at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Arthur stated, "When there's security within the environment, Pakistan is very good. When there's that insecurity, players start playing for themselves instead of the team because they're thinking of the next tour, and the next contract. That's a dangerous place to be in, and that's kind of where Pakistan cricket is now. And that's something that's very disappointing and sad for me."

He opined, "There's a massive amount of talent there, There are some world-class players, not just talented players. They're not given the support structure that they need to flourish."

Arthur added, "I still follow Pakistan cricket and I'll always follow it. But the vigour and thirst and passion I have for Pakistan cricket waned a little bit after that. To be brutally honest, I think Pakistan cricket is in a very disappointing place."

Under Arthur's coaching, Pakistan won their last ICC title in the 2017 Champions Trophy. However, everything went downhill from thereon. He returned as the team director ahead of last year's ODI WC but the Men in Green continued to disappoint. Even after the World Cup, there have been wholesome changes in Pakistan cricket's setup. However, they went winless in their three Tests in Australia and lost the five T20Is&nbsp;1-4 to New Zealand in New Zealand.&nbsp;

It will be interesting to see how Pakistan cricket goes ahead. But for now, they are completely struggling across formats.

Former Pakistan captain and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq lashed out at Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) former chief Zaka Ashraf and blamed him for the Men in Green's dismal run in the 2023 ODI World Cup&nbsp;held in India. Ashraf resigned as the PCB chief on Jan 19. Inzamam feels Ashraf's comments during the ODI WC had a bad impact on the Babar Azam-led team, who finished fifth and failed to enter the semi-finals.&nbsp;

Inzamam recalled the time Ashraf claimed that the World Cup team was selected by the captain and chief selector and not the board. He feels this affected the team morale adversely.&nbsp;

Speaking to a Pakistani news channel, as quoted by PTI, Inzamam said, "Can you imagine the mindset of the players when during an important event like the World Cup in India they hear that the PCB Chairman is saying the team selected was not done by the board but by the captain and chief selector only."

In addition, Inzamam further revealed that&nbsp;he is still waiting for the inquiry committee report on his alleged conflict of interest while serving as PCB&nbsp;chief selector. During the ODI WC, the former Pakistani captain resigned as the chief selector due to the said allegations.

He opined, "Just think what must be going through the players' minds when they hear that an inquiry committee has been formed against the chief selector and he has resigned. Where does this happen? I am still waiting for that report of the inquiry committee against me which was formed to probe whether I had committed a conflict of interest while being the chief selector."

Inzamam mentioned that Babar-led Men in Green needed backing from all during such a high-profile tournament. However, that was not the case which resulted in their early ouster. He went on to say that there is no problem with the current Pakistan team but they need support from the board and management.

"These changes affected the performance of the team and just imagine when they can put pressure on a world-class performer like Babar Azam what would the other players be thinking. The team was struggling in the World Cup and they needed to be given full confidence but this didn't happen. There is no problem with the team, they just need confidence and backing," Inzamam added.

After the ODI WC, Pakistan have had a torrid run in international cricket. They were whitewashed in the three Tests versus hosts Australia and lost the five T20Is (1-4) to New Zealand in the Kiwi land. They won the fifth and final T20I, on Sunday (Jan 21), to avoid another whitewash.

Pakistan men’s team head coach Grant Bradburn has resigned from his post, signing a new three-year deal with English County team Glamorgan on a three-year deal as the head coach. Bradburn took over the position from former marquee cricketer Saqlain Mushtaq last year and oversaw several series and the 2023 World Cup in India.

Bradburn worked in tandem with temporary Team Director Mickey Arthur, who juggled from managing Derbyshire (as their coach) and taking care of duties in Pakistan cricket in the World Cup year.

Following the conclusion of Pakistan’s World Cup campaign, where they failed to reach the semis despite the tournament taking place in the sub-continent, Arthur and Bradburn’s position came under the scanner. Although none from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) asked or took against asking the duo to leave, both didn’t travel with the team Down Under, with Mohammad Hafeez getting appointed as the new Team Director.

Pakistan Team Director Mohammad Hafeez has backed the ‘management’s call’ to rest pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi in the third and final Test in Sydney, which they lost by eight wickets on Saturday. Hafeez said his duty goes beyond just ensuring the team's performance in any series, admitting taking care of players' well-being is also part of his job.

Speaking in detail on the reason behind resting Shaheen in the final Test, Hafeez said he had to be considerate about Afridi’s workload as the left-arm seamer had bowled the most number of overs from either side (in just two matches), more than anyone, even those who played all three Tests, with Australia’s Nathan Lyon being the second-most busiest bowler (having bowled 70 overs in total).

Hafeez added that when he approached Afridi after the second Test, his body was sore and he required time to get into his groove. The former captain also noted that he couldn’t risk Afridi’s fitness because of the busy cricketing calendar.&nbsp;

"He bowled really well in those two games and bowled the most," Hafeez said.&nbsp;

"When I asked him before the third Test, his body was sore. And I need to look after him more than anything."

"If someone thinks their body is sore and they can't deliver the best, we need to look after the career of the individual. I will never make a decision where a player can lose his career for six months or a year. It was a tough call but we made that decision for the betterment of the players. Because we cannot make that decision at the cost of a player's career,” the Team Director added.

Meanwhile, Shaheen’s absence added to Pakistan’s bowling woes as they were already without Naseem Shah (out with a shoulder injury), Haris Rauf (preferred to play BBL) and Abrar Ahmed (out with a leg injury) for the whole series.&nbsp;

However, newcomer Aamer Jamal was the standout performer for the visiting team, picking 18 wickets, including two six-wicket hauls. Afridi and his fellow left-arm seamer Mir Hamza were Pakistan’s next-best bowlers, with eight and seven wickets, respectively.

‘I had to prioritise Afridi’s long-term career’ – Hafeez defends ‘team’s call’ to rest Shaheen in Sydney

Shortly after Pakistan lost the Boxing Day Test to Australia at MCG by 79 runs, team director Mohammad Hafeez said his side ‘played better cricket than the home team.&nbsp;Unlike how it panned out in the curtain-raiser in Perth, Pakistan played out of their skin in the fourth innings, with Salman Agha and Muhammad Rizwan putting up handy contributions while chasing 317.&nbsp;

Before the visiting team could stage an unreal chance of breaking the deadlock of winning a Test Down Under, the Aussie captain Pat Cummins pulled off a brilliant spell to help his team win the match and series.

As Pakistan needed 98 to win with five wickets in hand and both Salman and Rizwan looking settled in the middle, the momentum changed in the final half an hour when skipper Cummins' deadly spell&nbsp;saw him pick&nbsp;ten wickets in the game, five in each innings triggering&nbsp;a collapse.&nbsp;

Showing solace with his team after a fighting performance in Melbourne, Hafeez said Pakistan played better cricket than Australia, and he is proud of the unit.

“We played better cricket as a team,” Hafeez, the Pakistan team director, said.&nbsp;

“I'm proud of that. The way the team had the courage to attack this game in the best possible way. If I sum up the game, the Pakistan team played better than the other team in general.&nbsp;

“Our batting intent was better, and while bowling, we were hitting the right areas. Yes, we made some mistakes that cost us the game but as a team, I believe that there were a lot of positives, enough to win the game but unfortunately in the end we didn't win the game,” Hafeez added.

<h2>Babar is a better slip fielder than Abdullah</h2>

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique endured a troubled outing without his bat during the MCG Test. While he could contribute an aggregate of 70 across two innings, Abdullah came under the scanner for dropping sitters in the first slip in both innings.

Dropping Warner in the first innings didn’t turn out to be hefty, but putting down Mitchell Marsh in the next did, as the Aussie batter made most of the chance and hammered a brilliant 96.&nbsp;

Backing Abdullah despite those two blunders that perhaps took the game away from Pakistan, Hafeez said,

"We saw Abdullah wasn't feeling comfortable out there. As a team, you always back your teammates if something is not going well for them.&nbsp;

But we made this decision thinking if he's not feeling comfortable, Babar is a better slip fielder, so why not make the change? He should take the lead and go to first slip. I think that also worked out very well for me as a director because I could see the right person was doing that job. Obviously, Abdullah is also a good fielder, but he wasn't feeling confident in the slips,” Hafeez said.

Meanwhile, Sydney will host the third and final Test of the series, starting on January 3.&nbsp;

Showing solace with his team after a fighting performance in Melbourne, Hafeez said Pakistan played better cricket than Australia, and he is proud of the unit. ALSO READ: ICC slaps India with point-deduction for slow over-rate in Centurion Test; Shami’s replacement named “We played better cricket as a team,” Hafeez, the Pakistan team director, said. “I'm proud of that. The way the team had the courage to attack this game in the best possible way. If I sum up the game, the Pakistan team played better than the other team in general. “Our batting intent was better, and while bowling, we were hitting the right areas. Yes, we made some mistakes that cost us the game but as a team, I believe that there were a lot of positives, enough to win the game but unfortunately in the end we didn't win the game,” Hafeez added. Babar is a better slip fielder than Abdullah Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique endured a troubled outing without his bat during the MCG Test. While he could contribute an aggregate of 70 across two innings, Abdullah came under the scanner for dropping sitters in the first slip in both innings. Dropping Warner in the first innings didn’t turn out to be hefty, but putting down Mitchell Marsh in the next did, as the Aussie batter made most of the chance and hammered a brilliant 96. Backing Abdullah despite those two blunders that perhaps took the game away from Pakistan, Hafeez said, "We saw Abdullah wasn't feeling comfortable out there. As a team, you always back your teammates if something is not going well for them. Meanwhile, Sydney will host the third and final Test of the series, starting on January 3.

AUS v PAK: ‘We played better cricket, I am proud of my team’, says Mohammad Hafeez after MCG loss

Following an embarrassing 360-run loss in the Perth Test, Pakistan captain Shan Masood asked fans and critics to remain patient with the results Down Under. Having not won a Test in Australia since the start of the millennium, Pakistan aims to script history this time. Speaking to the media ahead of the second Test in Melbourne, Masood said expecting outright changes in approach and results is not possible, everyone should stay patient and trust the process.

"One Test is never a fair assessment," Masood told reporters on Monday in Melbourne.

Speaking further he&nbsp;said there are not just one or two factors, but a handful of them that come into preparing for the away Test series.&nbsp;

From the squad depth in the domestic structure to applying themselves in preparing a certain way, this Pakistan side must tick plenty of boxes before getting into a winning position against Australia on their home gorunds.&nbsp;

“You need time. You need a bit more time. You've already got a squad that's been playing Test cricket for a while. You have to look at the domestic structure and the players available for red-ball cricket. A lot of things you need before you can sort of force that way of playing.

"You need players to buy in. We want to give players ample opportunity to buy into the way we want to play. There are some things that we've said from the outside that we want to play a more attractive brand of Test cricket. We did that in Sri Lanka. We got some results as well. The challenge now is to do it against the best teams in world cricket,” the newly-appointed Test captain added.

<h2>Masood sets priorities clear</h2>

Expressing his thoughts on how his team should approach the next Test in Melbourne, Shan said adapting to the new conditions and playing accordingly is a must for all if they want to turn the tables around.&nbsp;

Shan stressed his batters are making the most by spending&nbsp;time&nbsp;in the middle, He said&nbsp;if Pakistan bats for over 100 overs, they must score at a healthier rate (above 3.5) and remain positive in their approach.

“...be adaptable to different situations. Be positive. And not have huge margins where the other team is scoring at 4.5 and we'll let them score at 4.5 as a bowling unit and not picking up those wickets in an earlier phase and not in 110 overs,” Shan said.

The 34-year-old said his red-ball game improved since deploying a positive approach.

“My red ball in domestic cricket has improved since I started batting more positively. As a batting unit, our goal is to make sure that if we are batting 100 overs, then we score at a higher rate,” he added.

AUS v PAK - One Test is never a fair assessment: Captain Shan Masood urges fans, critics to be patient

Pakistan Cricket Team has been dealt another blow ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, as seamer Khurram Shahzad is doubtful for the second Test. During the first match in Perth, Khurram complained of discomfort in his left side and now is sent for scans, the results of which will come by Thursday.

Among the two new bowlers included for this Test series, Khurram was on point with his tight line and length during the second innings in Perth, returning with three for 45 from his 16 overs. Though he is not an outright express bowler, Khurram accounted for veteran Steve Smith in both innings.

With his fellow debutant Aamer Jamal entering record books with a six-wicket haul in the first innings, Khurram was the one to get more sideways movement through the air outside among the pace attack. Being the most economical of all during the Test, Khurram’s control over the seaming bowl impressed everyone.

<h2>Absence of star bowlers</h2>

Meanwhile, with Pakistan already without their star cricketer Naseem Shah, out with a shoulder injury and Abrar Ahmad, out with an injured knee, the absence of Khurram Shahzad would hurt their chances of returning to this three-match series.&nbsp;

AUS vs PAK: Blow to Pakistan as seamer Khurram Shahzad doubtful for Melbourne Test

Following an embarrassing 360-run defeat at the hands of Australia in the first Test in Perth, Pakistan has managed to lock in a two-day practice game against Victoria XI ahead of the second Test at the MCG starting on Boxing Day. The Junction Oval in Melbourne will host the practice game on December 22 and 23.

This two-day practice game was not part of the original schedule, but concerns around lack of match practice led to Pakistan requesting Cricket Australia for the match. All parties involved locked this shortly after the end of the first Test.

Meanwhile, unlike the four-day practice tie against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra in the lead-up to the first Test, this match will not be a first-class game, allowing Pakistan to play more than 11 players during the match.&nbsp;

"That [the Victoria tour game] was something extra we added into the schedule because it wasn't there earlier," Pakistan head coach Mohammad Hafeez said after the Test.&nbsp;
"We wanted to have more practice rather than only one practice game. That had first-class status, so we couldn't give all the bowlers the chance to have a feel,” Hafeez added.&nbsp;

The newly-appointed head coach said they want all their players to be match-ready before the next game gets underway.&nbsp;

"That's the reason we wanted to have this practice game, so more guys could get a feel of a match scenario; we felt that would work well. We will definitely plan accordingly. All the players should use those two days to make themselves more familiar with the situations and the conditions,” Hafeez said.

While Pakistan will want its players to make the most of this two-day practice match, Victoria XI will also feature Marcus Harris – one of the contenders to replace Warner at the top in Tests, alongside Will Pucovski and captain Peter Handscomb.

<h2>Morris released to play BBL</h2>

Meanwhile, Australia released seamer Lance Morris&nbsp;from the squad (which is cut down to 13) for the second Test starting December 26. The young pacer, who was in line for his Test debut in Perth, will feature for Perth Scorchers in their next tie against Hobart Hurricanes on December 20 at Optus Stadium.&nbsp;

"Lance has been released for the Melbourne match but will stay prepared for Test cricket as he remains firmly in our plans for the summer, should an opportunity arise," national selector George Bailey said.

Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The right-handed batter said he isn't feeling the same zeal and excitement about continuing playing as a cricketer and decided to step aside for the same reason. Assad made the announcement after helping Karachi Whites to the National T20 Championship title.

“I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket, and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for international cricket. Which is why I have decided to say goodbye to all cricket,” Shafiq told a press conference.

Following Salman Butt’s removal from the advisory panel earlier, Shafiq’s name was tipped to come up, filling his place in the three-member committee appointed to assist the chief selector, Riaz. The former middle-order batter confirmed the news of PCB reaching out to name him on the selection panel on a paid contract.

“I have got the contract from the board, and I am looking at it, and hopefully, it will be processed soon,” said Shafiq, putting credibility on the speculations of him joining the PCB as a selector.

<h2>Post 2010</h2>

After the 2010 spot-fixing episode that rocked Pakistan and world cricket, Asad, alongside Misbah-ul-Haq, Azhar Ali and Younis Khan, consisted of the middle order that lasted nearly the next decade. Looked up to as a non-controversial player throughout his career, Asad found success in the white jersey, amassing 4460 runs in 77 Tests at an average of 38.19. He has scored 12 centuries and 27 fifties.

“After the spot-fixing scandal in 2010, it was a very difficult time for Pakistan cricket, and I am happy I was part of that process where we won back the confidence of the people in our team,” Asad said.

Pakistani legend and one of the greatest left-arm seamers, Wasim Akram, shared his views on speedster Haris Rauf opting not to play Test cricket for the country, instead wanting to play the Big Bash League. Rauf, a centrally contracted player, asked the selection committee not to consider him for the three-match Test series against Australia, starting in Perth on December 14.

Newly-appointed chief selector, Wahab Riaz, revealed the conversation between the two, wherein the T20 specialist Rauf opted out of the Test contention at the last minute, citing workload issues. Instead, Rauf expressed his desire to feature in Australia’s premier franchise-based T20 league, for which his NOC got delayed.

Speaking on the same, Akram said Tests are not everyone’s cup of tea. Although he respects Rauf’s decision, Akram added if Haris wants to be remembered among fans, he must play and do well in Tests.

“That’s his decision. He’s a contracted player, so there’s a lot of controversies back home,” Akram told reporters, about Rauf’s decision to skip the Tests.

“There are some white-ball specialist cricketers in this day and age … if he thinks he’s not there as yet, then that’s his call. Test is a big boy’s game at the end of the day. You’ve got to bowl eight-over spells,” the veteran seamer added.

Pakistan has roped in seasoned spinner Sajid Khan as a backup for injured Abrar Ahmed ahead of the first Test in Perth starting Thursday (Dec 16). Abrar suffered a knee injury during the warm-up game against Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra and got ruled out of the first match. His participation in the remainder of the series is subject to his fitness.

On day three of the warm-up tie, Abrar complained of pain around his knee area in the right leg. Following an assessment by PCB’s medical team, Abrar was advised to go for an MRI scan to know the extent of the injury.

Meanwhile, per PCB’s press release, Abrar is out of contention for the first Test but will continue to be with the team and undergo treatment. After that, Abrar will undergo conservative rehabilitation in Perth, determining his chances of playing the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

"During an assessment by the medical team, a provisional diagnosis was made - justifying an MRI scan, which was done on the same day," a PCB release stated.&nbsp;

"Abrar will undergo an intervention in Perth on Monday, after which conservative rehabilitation under the supervision of the team's medical staff, will continue his road to recovery.

"He has not been ruled out of the Test series yet, but keeping the player's wellbeing in mind for this and future tours, further assessment before the second Test will ascertain his availability on this tour," the release added.

Although experienced Noman Ali is also with the team Down Under, the PCB roped in Sajid Khan as a backup for the worst-case scenario. If Abrar fails to recover on time for the three Tests, Noman will lead the spin attack, with seamers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim almost locked in to start in Perth.

<h2>Options to look into</h2>

Despite Noman Ali’s presence, Pakistan has Sajid and all-rounder Agha Salman as backups in the spin department. Sajid, who last played a Test for his country in March 2022, was the joint-12th-highest wicket-taker in Pakistan's first-class competition - the 2023 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, picking 18 wickets in six outings.&nbsp;

If Abrar fails to recover on time for the three Tests, Noman will lead the spin attack, with seamers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim almost locked in to start in Perth. Options to look into Despite Noman Ali’s presence, Pakistan has Sajid and all-rounder Agha Salman as backups in the spin department. Sajid, who last played a Test for his country in March 2022, was the joint-12th-highest wicket-taker in Pakistan's first-class competition - the 2023 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, picking 18 wickets in six outings. Meanwhile, outside of experienced Shaheen and Hasan Ali, Pakistan’s pace attack consists of some new faces in Khurram Shahzad, Aamer Jamal and Mir Hamza – with all three ready to embark on their new journey in Pakistan jersey.

AUS v PAK: Pakistan rope in Sajid Khan as backup for injured Abrar Ahmed ahead of Perth Test

An out-of-nowhere and freak massive electrical storm on Friday night in Australia’s capital city of Canberra, blowing with 55 kph, washed away the pitch at the Manuka Oval, abandoning the final day’s play between the Prime Minister’s XI against Pakistan.&nbsp;

Upon inspecting the playing area on Saturday morning (the final day of the four-day warm-up game), the umpires and two captains decided to call off the proceedings, ending Pakistan’s preparation for the first Test starting in Perth on December 14.

Though Pakistan skipper Shan Masood and star batter Babar Azam looked in ominous touch, their middle order missed on spending more time in the middle ahead of Thursday's start to the three-match Test series.

However, their concern is Abrar Ahmed’s last-moment complaint of discomfort in his right leg, leading to speculations of him missing out on a place in the Perth Test. Considering Abrar remains unfit, Pakistan will likely play another specialist – the 37-year-old Noman Ali in his place, with three seamers – Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, and Mohammad Wasim locked in to start.

<h2>Australia ready for home summer</h2>

With plenty already being said about David Warner following his selection in the final 14 for the Perth Test in his farewell series, Australia is ready to come out and rock the home summer, with their XI almost certain.

Though questions would rise after Warner plays his final Test at home (at SCG early next year), several contenders – Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft are pushing in to press their case for replacing the veteran at the top in Tests.

While Bancroft and Harris were not among the runs in this game against Pakistan, the left-handed Renshaw impressed everyone with a stunning hundred.

"It was easy to get frustrated out there with some shots you thought should go for four, and you're getting two for it, so the mental strength for him to face as many balls as he did was impressive," PM's XI captain Nathan McSweeney told reporters. "That puts him in good stead I guess, along with the other guys, they've all batted well, so good luck to the selectors.

"They all have been [ready for Tests] for a while, they're all quality players who continue to churn out runs in Shield cricket, I don't think there's a bad decision to be made,” he added.

Freak Canberra storm ends Pakistan’s Perth Test build-up; Abrar doubtful with suspected leg injury

Newly-appointed Pakistan's Test captain, Shan Masood, likes to keep the cards close to his chest on what could be his side's possible XI for the first Test against Australia, starting December 14 in Perth. Although the batting line-up looks sorted, with players penned for each slot likely to play in their respective positions, questions around Pakistan's bowling attack come as the early challenge&nbsp;for Shan for the tour Down Under.&nbsp;

While the ongoing four-day tour game in Canberra ought to help Pakistan tick off most boxes, captain Masood sounds confident about stepping into Perth with his best XI. Seamers Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali are sure to share the new ball, with leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed likely to play a dual role with an older ball.&nbsp;

The yet-to-be-filled third seamer's slot is empty, with left-armer Mir Hamza and an uncapped Khurram Shahzad vying for the&nbsp;place.&nbsp;

Faheem Ashraf is another bowler who could play as the first-change seamer, strengthening Pakistan's batting.

"We'll only be able to decide when we get closer to the game, see the pitch, see the conditions, see where the guys are at with their fitness and their loads," captain Shan Masood said.&nbsp;

"Obviously, Shaheen and Hasan are senior bowlers, they are probably pencilled in, but you want to look at everyone and give them a fair run before you make that ultimate decision. The permutations on the structure of the side matter as well - do we go with an allrounder, what will the role of the spinner be? So there are a lot of things we are looking at, and we are very glad we are playing a fixture like this," the captain added.&nbsp;

<h2>Abrar to decide Pakistan's fate</h2>

Pakistan is yet to win a Test match on Australian soil, and for them to script history this time, their bowlers, especially spinners, have to play an influential role.&nbsp;

However, considering what Yasir Shah's numbers reflect in Tests Down Under (averaging 89.50 in five Tests), Abrar will have a challenge to overcome despite a stunning&nbsp;start to his career.&nbsp;

"Spinners are crucial, and we've seen that with the Australian team, how good Nathan Lyon has been for a number of years," Masood said.&nbsp;

"So, a spinner plays an important role; he's very complimentary to the fast bowlers in these conditions. Abrar has done really well for us; he's taken a lot of wickets against good sides, and we'll be hoping he does the same on this tour," he further added.
