Pakistan is set to launch five new airlines in its aviation industry in the next one year as competition intensifies following an open skies policy which may lead to lower fares and pose challenges to the financially struggling Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Afeef Zara, Askari Air, Air Sial, Go Green and Liberty Air are the new airlines set to hit the market. Air traffic had hiked over 40% in the past five years, flying around 20 million passengers, media reports said.

These airlines aim to cover routes Gwadar, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Dalbandin, Parachinar, Muzaffarabad, Bannu, Turbat, Skardu and Chitral. From these routes places like Gwadar, Gilgit-Baltistan and Turbat provided lucrative profit opportunities due to work being carried under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) stated that Pakistan&rsquo;s aviation sector could touch 9% per annum which could continue till 2020 and that these numbers highlighted the open skies policy which could prove lucrative for Pakistan, said reports.&nbsp;

Muhammad Afsar Malik, former additional director of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said that Pakistan&rsquo;s domestic air traffic has grown 10%, which is six percentage points higher than the 4% expansion in international air traffic, media reports said.

Malik added airlines were reducing fares to attract customers due to increased competition in the sector, and it was a result of the open-skies policy otherwise ticket prices would have been Rs30,000 instead of Rs10,000.

But PIA&rsquo;s spokesman believed on the contrary and in an emailed response stated private and foreign airlines were focusing on price cuts instead of providing more customer satisfaction.

However, Shaheen Air spokesman said in an email &ldquo;about every player in the aviation chain including airports, airplane manufacturers, jet engine makers, travel agents and service companies turn in healthy profits. Yet, it is one of the enduring ironies that companies that actually move passengers from one place to another, which are a crucial link in the chain, struggle to achieve break even.&rdquo;

He further added that government should rethink the open skies policy as foreign carriers could enter Pakistan&rsquo;s market without any restriction.

An elite group of climbers have saved a French mountaineer in a daring high-altitude rescue mission on Pakistan&#39;s Nanga Parbat, one of the highest mountains in the world, as officials called off the search for a second missing alpinist on Sunday.

The group of Polish climbers with support from the Pakistani military launched the effort Saturday afternoon to rescue stranded French mountaineer Elisabeth Revol, but were unable to reach Polish national Tomek Mackiewicz on Nanga Parbat, nicknamed &quot;killer mountain&quot;.

The rescue mission involved four mountaineers who were flown by the Pakistani military from the base camp of K2 -- the world&#39;s second-highest peak -- to reach the stranded climbers.

&quot;The K2 climbers who stopped their historic effort for a winter K2 summit will descend with Elisabeth Revol - one life saved,&quot; said Karar Haideri, spokesman for the Alpine Club of Pakistan, in a statement on Sunday.

The missing alpinists were located Friday when fellow mountaineers using binoculars spotted Revol attempting to climb down while Mackiewicz appeared to be crawling due to frostbite.

Nanga Parbat, in northern Pakistan, is the world&#39;s ninth-highest mountain at 8,125 metres (26,660 feet).

It earned the nickname &quot;killer mountain&quot; after more than 30 climbers died trying to conquer it before the first successful summit in 1953.

In July last year, a Spaniard and an Argentinian were presumed dead after they went missing while trying to summit Nanga Parbat.

India&#39;s foreign secretary S. Jaishankar<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/terrorism-anywhere-can-threaten-societies-anywhere-sushma-swaraj-at-raisina-dialogue-29822"> speaking at the Raisina Dialogue</a> stated that the rise of China, choices, postures, behaviour of the United States, the challenge of terrorism especially from ungoverned spaces and the rise of &quot;non-market economics&quot; would be the &quot;four big disruptions&quot; in times ahead.

While emphasizing that China<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/need-to-identify-nations-who-are-sponsors-of-terrorists-army-chief-at-raisina-dialogue-29797"> had &quot;opened up the international order&quot;,</a> the foreign secretary said: &quot;We need to have a balanced view. Certainly, for India, in some ways, China has been a motivator and an example.&quot;

&quot;Let&#39;s take the rise of China. Clearly what we are seeing is not just rise of global power but the rise of a very different power. And also whether that power will be a model to other countries or not, I think is an open question,&quot; Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar who is set to retire on January 28th said, &quot;Iraq was a disruption, in a sense Pakistan has, was, is, will be a disruptor. The Obama administration&#39;s choices on Russia were disruptions to international politics.&quot;

Expanding on the practice of &quot;non-market economics&quot; a term which means countries who seek to follow central planning, India&#39;s foreign secretary said: &quot;A lot of market economies are also practising non-market economics,&quot; while also pointing out that barriers in the trade and services were coming down.

He belonged to the 78 BN BSF security force. The Pakistan forces opened fire at the Indian sector at around 9 pm on Wednesday. The Indian soldiers retaliated which continued till 6 am on Thursday. Pakistan will not act against Hafiz Saeed &#39;sahib&#39; as there is no case registered against him in the country, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said, giving a clean chit to the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind.

Saeed, the chief of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), was released from house arrest in Pakistan in November.

The US has labelled JuD the &quot;terrorist front&quot; for the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a group Saeed founded in 1987. LeT was responsible for carrying the 2008 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people.

Abbasi, during an interview to Geo TV on Tuesday, referred to Saeed as &#39;sahib&#39; or &#39;sir&#39;.

&quot;There is no case against Hafiz Saeed Sahib in Pakistan. Only when there is a case can there be action,&quot; Abbasi said when asked why there was no action against Saeed, a UN-designated terrorist.

After his release from house arrest, Saeed had confirmed that the JuD will contest the 2018 general elections under the banner of the Milli Muslim League, which is yet to be registered with the Election Commission.

The US has said it was concerned about Saeed running for office in Pakistan despite carrying a USD 10 million bounty on his head for terror activities. It had also asked Pakistan to re-arrest him.

When asked why the Pakistan government did not let Saeed&#39;s party go mainstream, Abbasi claimed that it was not the government?s decision nd that the Election Commission acts according to its own rules.

He also said there was no danger of a war with India and both countries should ensure there is no escalation of the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.

&quot;I don?t think there is a danger of war, at least from our side, it is not there. Pakistan has never taken unilateral action, we have always demonstrated responsibility,&quot; Abbasi said.

&quot;If they believe on the other side there will be some political benefits and they keep making statements, as their military leadership has done, this has never been good for peace,&quot; he said.

Responding to a question on Army chief General Bipin Rawat&#39;s remarks about calling Pakistan?s &quot;nuclear bluff&quot;, Abbasi said: &quot;The Indian Army chief will not speak in favour of us. It is a fact that Pakistan has nuclear capability and we have demonstrated it.&quot;

He said India must understand that when there are violations at the LoC, there would be retaliation.

Pakistan can do without US aid: Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif

A mother and daughter polio vaccination team were gunned down Thursday in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta as they were immunizing children, police said, the latest deaths in the country&#39;s long campaign against the disease.

The duo were killed in a neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city, capital of restive Balochistan, Pakistan&#39;s largest and poorest province.

&quot;Sakina Bibi, 38 and her daughter Rizwana Bibi, 16, were killed by unknown assailants while they were administering polio drops to children,&quot; senior police official Aitzaz Ahmed Goraya said.

He said the pair were on the fourth day of a five-day anti-polio campaign.

&quot;Previously we used to have police personnel providing security to polio workers but we changed it a few months back as it was drawing attention,&quot; Aitzaz said.

&quot;Now we assign polio workers their own neighbourhoods and don&#39;t give them security,&quot; he added.&nbsp;

The incident was confirmed by a senior administration official Amjad Ali Khan.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the incident but Taliban militants have attacked polio workers in the country in the past. More than a hundred people have been killed in such attacks since December 2012.

Islamist opposition to all forms of inoculation grew after the CIA organised a fake vaccination drive to help track down Al-Qaeda&#39;s former leader Osama Bin Laden in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad. He was killed there by US forces in 2011.

Pakistan is one of only two countries in the world where polio, a crippling childhood disease, remains endemic.

Despite the attacks, it hopes to be removed from the list of polio-endemic countries by 2018 by achieving its goal of no fresh cases for a year.

In a separate incident, two policemen were gunned down and a third was critically injured as they were riding a motorbike on their way to the police station in Quetta, Aitzaz said.&nbsp;

In the month of July 2017, A piece of news got published in different newspapers on the same day. Both India and Pakistan were covering a single incident of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The sequence of events, as reported, was the same and the narrative was same too. The only difference was the outlook of the media of the two countries towards this news.

&nbsp;

The news pieces were related to a dreaded terrorist called Burhan Wani, who got killed in an encounter with security forces in Kokernag area of Kashmir valley.&nbsp; Burhan Wani was wanted for abetment of war against the Indian government and was known for his aggressive social media updates. While the Indian TV channels described it as a victory of Indian Forces over terrorism, nearly all the Pakistani newspapers, as well as media channels, described it as an act of barbarism from the Indian Security forces.

&nbsp;

While Indian channels termed Burhan Wani as a terrorist, Pakistani media referred him as a freedom fighter and an epitome of Kashmiri struggle. One of the Pakistani newspaper even compared him with Che Guevara, a legendary freedom fighter. Not only this, after nearly a month of his death on the Independence Day of Pakistan, the government ran a special train called Azadi Train where they featured the national heroes of Pakistan and Burhan Wani was reflected as one of the national heroes of the country.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Another interesting update is that one of the directors of Lollywood is making a movie on him which is, reportedly, funded by the government of Pakistan. The people who are wanted in serious acts of barbaric terrorism in India are termed as heroes in the neighbouring country.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The question is very simple, should a country support the acts of terror and glorify these terrorists as freedom fighters? India had been a victim of this state-sponsored terrorism for long and suffered the worst. More than 1.3 lakh people were killed in Kashmir because of terrorism. But this is just not a struggle. It is a clear case of state-sponsored terrorism.

&nbsp;

We must explore the role of media in the country. As we know, media is the fourth pillar of democracy and in any sensible country, media plays a vital role in criticising the policies of the government. In India, there have been instances where governments were forced to change their stance because of media criticism. The tougher laws for rape were made possible only after Nirbhaya gangrape case which was highlighted by the Indian media.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

But in Pakistan things are different. National media is under control of the government and anyone who tries to go against the government or Army is severely punished. The telecast of international channels is curbed from time to time and if the government thinks that any channel is not towing its line, it is prohibited in the country outrighted.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The attacks on media persons are a daily routine. In last 20 years itself, more than 70 senior national level media personals have been killed and more than 100 grievously injured. Most of them are kidnapped, beaten and threatened over the gunpoint by the government agencies so that their voice can be suppressed. Sabeen Mehmood, Aftab Alam, Abdul Shinwari, Haroon Khan, Hamid Mir and, more recently, Taha Siddiqui are the live example of this.

&nbsp;

Imagine a scenario where the leaders of the country are supporting the terrorism and the media has no say. This is the reason why Pakistan is unabatedly enhancing its support to terrorism and celebrating violence perpetrated by these so-called freedom fighters.

&nbsp;

What our neighbour is not able to understand is that terrorism cannot lead any country to a secure place. There have been many instances in the past where countries indulged in state-sponsored terrorism and ultimately suffered the worst. The examples of Libya, Syria, Iraq, Sudan and Uganda are visible to everyone. Initially, the countries were isolated internationally, followed by sanctions and then by either a military action or an economic breakdown. In case of Pakistan, the first step of isolating it has started already.

&nbsp;

So, what should our neighbour do? First, the government of Pakistan should understand that there is never good terrorism. All types of terror acts are bad and all of them should be dealt with a firm hand. A terrorist is always an enemy of humanity and any support to them is directly against the humanity. They must understand that unless a country has complete media freedom, it would always be like a table without a leg which cannot stand on its own.&nbsp;

Pakistan&rsquo;s fast bowling factory keeps churning out talent that catches the world&#39;s eye instantly.&nbsp;

The latest to come out of Pakistan&#39;s pace factory is 17-year-old Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Shaheen Afridi&nbsp;was labelled as Pakistan&#39;s Mitchell Starc known for his searing yorkers.

In the ongoing U-19 World cup, the emerging Pakistan pacer razed Ireland for 97 runs by taking 6 for 15 in 8.5 overs.&nbsp;

The opponent had to answer to Afridi&#39;s swing ball. &nbsp;

Earlier, Shaheen&rsquo;s dream debut was for Khan Research Laboratory against Rawalpindi, as he grabbed 8 for 39 in 15 overs in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan&rsquo;s premier domestic tournament.&nbsp;

He broke a 43-year old record, set by Nadeem Malik who had taken 8 for 58 for Lahore in 1973-74 on debut.&nbsp;

His skill of bowling round the stumps and the knowledge of using the angles at crease helped him to get spotted by Mushtaq Ahmed, the head coach at the Academy and the coach of Karachi Kings.

Ahmad asked Afridi to bowl at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore and he was so impressed that recommended Kumar Sangakkara to have a look at his bowling videos.

It eventually led Afridi to be signed for the Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League without having played a first-class game.

The 6.5 feet tall, strapping fast bowler hails from Fata region in the North Western region of Pakistan, near the Khyber Pass on the Afghanistan border.&nbsp;

He is the brother of Riaz Afridi who played one Test for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in Karachi and has also featured in the &quot;rebel&quot; Indian Cricket League(ICL) before his action was called into question.

While most emerging fast bowlers from Pakistan idolise the great Wasim Akram, Afridi is quick to point out there can be no bigger idol in his life than his brother, Riaz, as it helped him convince his parents of taking cricket his full-time career option.&nbsp;

While most emerging fast bowlers from Pakistan idolise the great Wasim Akram, Afridi is quick to point out there can be no bigger idol in his life than his brother, Riaz, as it helped him convince his parents of taking cricket his full-time career option.

Big-hitting Colin de Grandhomme blasted New Zealand to a five-wicket win over Pakistan in the fourth one-day international in Hamilton on Tuesday.

De Grandhomme bludgeoned the Pakistan attack with an unbeaten 74 off 40 balls to reinvigorate New Zealand&#39;s run chase as the hosts were struggling to reach a 263-run target.

&quot;Everything just seemed to be hitting the middle tonight,&quot; said de Grandhomme, whose innings included five sixes and seven fours.

The result puts New Zealand up 4-0 in the five-match series and sets a new record for the Black Caps of 11 consecutive international victories.

The streak includes convincing wins over the West Indies in all formats of the game and keeps alive the prospects of an ODI series whitewash against Pakistan in Wellington on Friday.

However, it was a much-improved performance from Pakistan, who were skittled for just 74 in their previous outing.

They looked set for another heavy defeat after a horror start saw them at 11 for two but Mohammad Hafeez notched 81 to set a competitive target.

Others in the misfiring Pakistani batting line-up also found form, with Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail and captain Sarfraz Ahmed all posting half centuries.

Teenage leg-spinner Shadab Khan then claimed three of New Zealand&#39;s top four batsmen to give Pakistan some hope before de Grandhomme&#39;s match-turning performance.

Pakistan opted to bat first after winning the toss, promoting hard-hitting allrounder Faheem Ashraf to open in the search for runs.

The gamble backfired when Faheem departed for one and Babar Azam soon followed after a dynamic spell from Black Caps paceman Tim Southee.

Pakistan&#39;s batsmen were able to steady the innings but only Hafeez managed to push on beyond 50, smashing 22 from the final over.

The other major talking point of the Pakistan innings was a head injury to Shoaib Malik, who ran into the path of fielder Colin Munro&#39;s throw while trying to scamper back to his crease.

The ball hit him flush on the head and officials later said he showed signs of delayed concussion and did not return after the innings break.

New Zealand set about the run chase with gusto as opener Colin Munro brought up his half-century off 33 balls.

They appeared to be cruising to victory at 88 without loss before squandering four wickets for 11 runs.

Shadab made a double breakthrough to dislodge Munro (56) and Martin Guptill (31) in successive balls, then followed up by coaxing an edge off Tom Latham.

The bravery award has been handed over to the US Embassy in Kabul.

&quot;US Ambassador in Kabul John R. Bass has promised that he will soon hand over the medal to President Trump,&quot; said Akbari.

In a tit-for-tat response, Ghafoor told Pakistan&#39;s Dawn newspaper: &quot;Should India wish to test our resolve they may try and see it for themselves. We have a credible nuclear capability exclusively meant for threats from the East.&quot;

Pakistan&#39;s military wing added that Pakistan considers its nuclear capability to be a &quot;weapon of deterrence&quot; and not an &quot;option for war&quot;.

&quot;The only thing stopping them is our credible nuclear deterrence as there is no space of war between the two nuclear states,&quot; Ghafoor said, adding,&quot;Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state with a professional army, therefore India must not remain in illusion.&quot;

General Rawat had said the Pakistan Army was continuously trying to help terrorists sneak into India along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&amp;K, adding that the Indian Army is using its might &quot;to teach them a lesson.&quot;

In the fourth one-day international match between New Zealand and Pakistan, the latter has won the toss and elected to bat in Hamilton on Tuesday.

&quot;It looks like a good pitch, so hopefully we can make a good score,&quot; the tourists&#39; captain Sarfraz Ahmed said.

New Zealand has already won the five-match series after taking a 3-0 lead.

Pakistan vs New Zealand 4th ODI: Pakistan look to salvage pride

India&#39;s two-nuclear powered neighbours are in news again. General Bipin Rawat, the Indian Army Chief, gave a statement that India is capable of calling Pakistan&rsquo;s nuclear bluff. The statement was a generalised one but was taken very seriously by not only the political leadership of Pakistan but also their Army.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Pakistan had been threatening India with its nukes all the time. Their leaders start giving statements that Pakistan is a nuclear-powered nation and India should not mess up with it. To understand the reality, we must know the truth and myths behind Pakistan&rsquo;s nuclear capabilities.

&nbsp;

A nation does not become nuclear empowered just by testing a few warheads under standard testing conditions. It needs a robust Nuclear doctrine and reliable mechanism for the delivery of these warheads to the right place in the enemy&rsquo;s territory.&nbsp; Any nuclear-powered country would need land, sea or aerial means to deliver these weapons. This translates into possession of land and sea-based missiles, including aircrafts modified with suitable missile systems to launch the weapons and locating them at a place which cannot be detected easily.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

It is well known that in any war, the locations of these strike capabilities are targeted first, creating decoys and preparing for contingencies is a critical factor. In the case of Pakistan, we can be sure that the country will take, at least, few days to assemble its nukes for an attack and that will be too late.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

At present, in addition to the ballistic missiles, the only second method of delivery Pakistan has is through its aircrafts, for instance, few F-16s and J-17 can deliver them through toss bombing. But for such daring operations, and that too in the absence of a nuclear-powered Air to Surface Missile, these aircrafts have to come closer to Indian targets. In the current scenario, that does not look possible. This is mainly due to the technical superiority of Indian Forces in terms of Radar surveillance and possible situation of air superiority in the initial phase of war itself.

&nbsp;

Further, if we take the examples of its missiles, there are serious doubts about the so-called nuclear deliverables of Pakistan. While Pakistan tested its various missiles over the last two decades, the operational status of them is still not very clear.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

If we take the medium and long-range missiles, Ghauri series of missiles are liquid fuel-based and their readiness time is very high, while Ababeel and Shaheen series are not yet operational. Abdali and Ghaznavi are only capable of carrying conventional warheads. Nasr as well as Babur are operational but has a payload capacity of lesser than 500 Kgs and it can carry only tactical warheads of 10-30 kilotons. Out of these, operational versions of Babur have a range of about 400-450Kms while Nasr is just 60-80Kms. While Nasr can be used in the initial stages of war due to its limited range, the operational number of Babur Missile is very less due to import of some of its critical components from China. All of these are land-based missiles and there is no operational missile with Pakistan, which can be launched from the sea or air-based platforms, leaving the country with very few options.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

There are other things also which matter for a nuclear strike and these are pertaining to availability and readiness of nuclear warheads. These things include: safeguarding its triggers, devices and pits (Uranium or Plutonium fuel for the warhead) which any country keeps in partially dis-assembled storages at various locations across the country. How can they be made available in a ready form in minimum possible time is an important concern.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

So far, in case of Pakistan, important things are still in the hands of its scientists under Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA); very little is known about the operationalisation or availability with Defence forces in the form of ready to launch warheads.&nbsp;

Not only this, the country needs a robust communication mechanism which works on a diverse mechanism of Radio, Satellite and other communication links. These are required to pass the concerned nuclear code and directions from the top leaders to the missile launch sites. In case of Pakistan, these instructions will come from NCA (National Command Authority) and Strategic Planning Division (SPD).&nbsp;

&nbsp;

In the absence of any communication satellite of Pakistan, the country relies only on radio and line communications for the passage of this information which will be the first to be jammed or destroyed in the scenario of a war. Pakistan can claim that they can take help of Chinese satellites or their communication tools but relying on these satellites is like handing over the control of Nukes to China itself.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

When we talk about the safeguarding the nuclear assets, Pakistan is a unique nation where the differentiation between the country&rsquo;s loyal forces and terrorists is very negligible. This was evident from the active involvement of a large number of Pakistani Naval officers on PNS Zulfiqar in September 2014 which was later claimed by ISIS. Imagine any such vessel loaded with nuclear warheads comes under control of the terrorists, what would be the outcome?

&nbsp;

The past terror incidents have been horrible when Pakistan Aeronautical Complex at Kamra was attacked not once but twice in 2007 and 2009. The General Headquarters at Rawalpindi was attacked in 2009 and was kept in seize for several hours. In May 2011, the Mehran Base at Karachi which is known to stock nuclear weapons in its vicinity was attacked too. In 2012, Peshawar airbase was attacked too.

&nbsp;

In the wake of ISIS looking for alternative territories for its operations, Pakistan is an ideal location and the possibilities of its nukes going into the hands of terrorists very high.&nbsp;

Opinion: Is Pakistan telling the truth about its nuclear weapons?

A senior US diplomat had talks in Pakistan on Monday following an outcry over President Donald Trump&#39;s accusation that the nuclear-armed South Asian state had engaged in &quot;lies and deceit&quot; as a US ally in the war in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Alice Wells, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, met with Pakistani Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, the Foreign Ministry and U.S. Embassy said.

A Foreign Ministry statement said Wells &quot;acknowledged Pakistan&#39;s efforts in eradicating terrorism&quot; and &quot;underlined the need for strengthening intelligence cooperation&quot; to fight terrorism.

Relations between United States and Pakistan were already tense when Trump tweeted on Jan. 1 that the United States had foolishly given Pakistan $33 billion in aid over 15 years and was rewarded with &quot;nothing but lies &amp; deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools&quot;.

It is not clear what prompted Trump&#39;s tweet, which infuriated Pakistani officials and caught the rest of the US administration off guard.

The United States has long complained that the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani networks that target American troops inside Afghanistan are allowed to take shelter on Pakistani soil.

Pakistan denies this, and accuses the United States of ignoring its vast sacrifices - casualties have numbered in the tens of thousands - in fighting terrorism.

The Trump administration also last week announced the suspension of about $2 billion in security aid to Pakistan - officially a US ally - over accusations that Islamabad is playing a double game in Afghanistan.

Advocating a &quot;politico-military&quot; approach in dealing with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat today called for political initiative to go hand-in-hand with military operations in the state.

Gen Rawat, who has followed a hard-line approach in tackling terrorism, said the armed forces operating in the state cannot be &quot;status quoist&quot; and must evolve new strategies and tactics to deal with the situation.

In an interview to PTI, the Army chief said, &quot;The political initiative and all the other initiatives must go simultaneously hand-in-hand and only if all of us function in synergy, we can bring lasting peace in Kashmir. It has to be a politico-military approach that we have to adopt.&quot;

Rawat also asserted that there was room for ramping up heat on Pakistan to cut the flow of cross-border terror activities, clearly indicating that the Army will continue its policy of hot pursuit in dealing with militancy.

In October, the government had appointed former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma as its special representative for a &quot;sustained dialogue&quot; with all stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir.

&quot;When the government appointed an interlocutor, it is with that purpose. He is the government&#39;s representative to reach out to the people of Kashmir and see what their grievances are so that those can then be addressed at a political level,&quot; the Army chief said.

Asked whether pressure could be increased on Pakistan to force it to stop sending terrorists to the state, he said, &quot;Yes, you cannot be status quoist. You have to continuously think and keep moving forward. You have to keep changing your doctrines and concept and the manner in which you operate in such areas.&quot;

Gen Rawat said the Army will have to evolve new strategies and new tactics to deal with the situation. At the same time, he said an overall approach was required to deal with the Kashmir issue.

Since beginning of last year, the Army pursued an aggressive anti-terror policy in Jammu and Kashmir and, at the same time, forcefully responded to all ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops along the Line of Control with a tit- for-tat approach.

&quot;Military is only part of the mechanism to resolve the Kashmir issue. Our charter is to ensure that the terrorists who are creating violence in the state are taken to task and those who have been radicalised and are increasingly moving towards terrorism are prevented from doing so,&quot; he said.

Gen Rawat said some youths continue to be radicalised and are joining militancy. The Army has been trying to maintain pressure on terror groups, he said.

The Army&#39;s aim is to ensure that it continues to maintain the pressure on the terrorists and those fomenting trouble in Kashmir, Gen Rawat said.

&quot;But at the same time, we have to also reach out to the people,&quot; he said.

Asked whether the situation in Kashmir has improved since he has taken over as the Army chief a year ago, Gen Rawat said, &quot;I am only seeing a marginal change in situation for the better.

&quot;I do not think it is time to become over confident and start assuming that the situation has been brought under control because infiltration from across the borders will continue.&quot;

The LoC has remained volatile in the last year. According to official figures, 860 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops were reported in 2017 as against 221 the year before.

India has also been effectively retaliating to Pakistani firing and even crossed the LoC to punish Pakistani troops on several occasions as part of tactical operations.&nbsp;

J&K: Chief indicates army will continue policy of hot pursuit

An army jawan was killed in an unprovoked firing by Pakistan soldiers along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.&nbsp;

The firing took place in Jammu and Kashmir&#39;s Rajouri district around 2 pm and lasted for 15 minutes. The Indian army counter-attacked effectively, media reports said.&nbsp;

The soldier, Lance Naik Yogesh Muralidhar Bhadane, 22, was from Khalane village of Dhule district in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

As per media reports, Bhadane was severely injured and eventually succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;

The incident happened following the killing of a BSF head constable after Pakistani forces &quot;sniped&quot; from across the International Border (IB) in Samba district.

In retaliation, the BSF destroyed two Pakistani mortar positions and also foiled an infiltration bid by gunning down a Pakistani intruder along the IB near Nikowal Border Out Post (BoP) in Arnia sector.

An army personnel was also killed along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district on December 31 last year.&nbsp;

Sepoy Jagsir Singh, 32, was killed when he was shot by Pakistani troops from across the border along the LoC in Rajouri district on the last day of 2017, the year which recorded the highest number of ceasefire violations in the past decade resulting in the death of 35 people, including 19 Army personnel and four BSF men.

New Zealand comfortably defeated Pakistan by massive 183 runs in the third one-day international in Dunedin on Saturday.

After given a target of 258 runs, Kiwis ended the Pakistani inning at mere 74 runs, to achieve an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

The team was reduced to 18 for 6 in the 15th over at one stage and went on to survive online 28 overs at end of the game.

Trent Boult rocked Pakistan with three wickets in five balls, helping his team to get rid of the top order batsmen.
&nbsp;
Later, he went on to take two more wickets.&nbsp;

His five-wicket haul once again showed how good a bowler he is when he gets that new ball moving.&nbsp;

Pakistan struggled to get going and runs dried up so much so that they were able to score just nine runs in the first ten overs for the loss of three wickets.&nbsp;

There were a total of 67 dot ball in the first 13 overs as wickets continued to tumble.&nbsp;

For the black caps, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor struck half-centuries but New Zealand lost seven wickets in their last seven overs to lose momentum towards the end after being 209 for 3 at one stage.

The victory was New Zealand&#39;s 10th in succession across all formats. That equals the longest winning sequence in their history.
