&quot;According to media reports, India is set to launch 31 satellites including the earth observation spacecraft Cartosat, on 12th January 2018. Indian Space Research Organization today launched its 100th satellite, Cartosat-2 into the space.

Cartosat-2 Series is an advanced remote sensing satellite similar in configuration to earlier six spacecraft in the series and intended to augment data services to the users.

Its primary objective is to provide high-resolution scene-specific spot imageries that would help in urban and rural applications, coastal land use and regulation, road network monitoring, water distribution and geographical information system applications among others.

The Indian microsatellite will demonstrate a new technology which will allow capturing of images at night and will also provide high-resolution scene-specific spot imageries.

America&#39;s pressure on Pakistan to end support to terrorists if it wants aid should not lead India into expecting that Washington would take over New Delhi&#39;s work when it comes to dealing with Pakistan, Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat said on Friday.

Acknowledging the suspension of military aid to Pakistan by the US, General Rawat averred it was premature to talk how much of an impact it would have on Pakistan, India and the extended neighbourhood.

&quot;It would be too premature to start saying that everything is going to be hunky-dory. Let&#39;s not expect the US to do what we are expected to do,&quot; General Rawat said at a press conference here.

Speaking about India&#39;s combative action against infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir, General Rawat informed that Cavalry Fighting Vehicles (CFV) have been increased to destroy Pakistan posts that support infiltration, and added that India&#39;s war casualties are lesser than Pakistan&#39;s.

&quot;The casualties which Pakistan has suffered are three to four times more than we did. Pakistan is sending messages regularly to return to the ceasefire. We are ready, but we will continue till we see a decrease in ceasefire violation,&quot; he added.

Last week, the United States announced the suspension of military aid to Pakistan, given that it was not taking &quot;necessary steps&quot; to curb terrorism.

US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said the embargo would remain in place until Pakistan acts against the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani network.

The announcement came after US President Donald Trump made a scathing remark against Pakistan and accused it of lying and deceiving while receiving billions in aid.&nbsp;

India should not expect the US to do its work: Army Chief on Pakistan

The Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) chief and UN-designated global terrorist Hafiz Saeed has lashed out at the Pakistan government for not ushering Islamic rule in the country.

&quot;They have started this work by finishing the message of Prophet Muhammad. Let us unite and pledge that we would not let it happen,&quot; Saeed has said at an event.

Already at loggerheads with the United States (US), especially over its decision to suspend military aid to Pakistan, the 26/11 mastermind criticised both the US and Israel for the political chaos in the country.

&quot;This is Israel&#39;s agenda, which America is executing effectively. After losing in Afghanistan, it wants to wage a new war here in Pakistan. The unity that I am seeing today here is good but we need bigger and better unity and start a revolution. We have to stand up and do something better for Islam and Pakistan,&quot; Hafiz Saeed added.

The JuD chief is also looking to contest the 2018 general elections in Pakistan and has, thereby, formed a party by the name of Milli Muslim League (MML).

Earlier this week, Saeed invited all Islamic states to launch &#39;Jihad&#39; against the United States and Israel.

Meanwhile, Pakistan recently prohibited Saeed&#39;s JuD and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) from collecting donations.

Saeed has recently been released from house arrest after a Pakistani court cited lack of evidence against him in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case.

India has, time and again, protested against Pakistan for harbouring Saeed, who is wanted for plotting the Mumbai attacks.

WION Evening News brief, January 12, 2018

Pakistan started the work on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with much fanfare and a lot of exaggerated publicity; they hoped, CPEC is going to change the future of their country but the reality talks differently. From the very first day, differences between Pakistan and Chinese authorities were visible, for instance, suspension of Chinese work at Daimer- Bhasha Dam. When China decided to invest over 60 Billion Dollar in a rogue nation, it failed to analyse whether Pakistan is secure enough for such massive foreign engagement and, if yes, can this engagement sustain in the future too?

&nbsp;

After repeated interventions by China, and their request for a comprehensive security cover to their assets, Pakistan created a special security division in early 2017. The division consisted of a large force of over 15,000 soldiers but, in the end, it has actually failed to provide security as the attacks on the labour and other installations have continued since then.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

There is a serious concern towards the success of CPEC in addition to the financial and diplomatic differences between Pakistan and China, and that is terrorism. Many attacks on CPEC related projects have happened in Pak and future attacks cannot be ruled out. The violence has also caused major setbacks to the project. In fact, Pakistan has been hiding the security risks pertaining to the projects under the claim of economic development. Since the work has started, there has been the killing of over 100 people and this includes a sizeable number of Chinese personal too.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

So far Pakistani authorities are perceiving the threat only in Baluchistan and, hence, a sizeable portion of this CPEC security division is stationed in that area. However, it failed to understand that, in the aftermath of defeats in Middle east, the ISIS fighters are also looking for an alternative territory from where they can re-launch themselves. Incidentally, they cannot have a better option than Pakistan. It is highly possible that ISIS may form a coalition with Taliban and Haqqani network to establish its foothold in Pakistan, a situation which is going to create tensions not only for Pakistan and China but also for India.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

For the ISIS, US, Europe and China are the enemies, and they have reiterated it time and again. As per a statement of the Syrian Ambassador to Beijing, ISIS has about 5000+ Uighur fighters in its cadres, and this implies a very serious situation. If ISIS does come to Pakistan, planned targeting of Chinese assets cannot be ruled out while the killing of Chinese officials by these Uighur fighters is a high possibility. There are also possibilities that these ISIS fighters could form a coalition with Baloch Guerrillas which will be catastrophic as a major part of CPEC is in Baluchistan. Currently, most of the attacks on CPEC are happening in Baluchistan only.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Even if Pakistan mobilises all its forces and able to counter the threat of Baloch Guerrillas as well as the ISIS terrorists, it has a long list of problems ahead. The country which used to survive with the help of aids of other countries, especially America, is poorly performing in its development. The economy is sinking and they are under a false assurance that CPEC will start showering them with trillions of dollars instantly. The same assurance is passed on to their innocent public by their corrupt politicians too.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

But what they must understand, the CPEC is not a boon given by China to its &quot;best friend&quot; Pakistan. When China moved in to decide on this partnership, there was nothing called friendship in this case. China was looking for an alternative route for its oil and gas as well as exports to other countries. At present, almost 100% of China&rsquo;s maritime exports are through the strait of Malacca and, with the ongoing tension in the South China Sea, the blockade of this route by the United States cannot be ruled out. As a result, China had no option but to look for alternative routes to his supplies.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

With the present CPEC, China is not only getting the shortest route for its exports to the Western countries but also ensuring a smooth passage to its oil supplies by a dedicated pipeline from Gwadar to Xinxiang. On one hand, this is a win-win situation to China, but for Pakistan, it is a going to be a disaster. A major portion of the investment is coming in the form of a loan. So, here we have a funny situation: China is giving a loan, not to Pakistan, but its own Chinese companies which are building infrastructure for the use of Chinese businesses and the loan will be repaid by Pakistan with massive interest.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

So, except the development of infrastructure and few jobs to the Pakistani people in CPEC related projects, Pakistan is not achieving anything out of it. The revenues which it is likely to get from this infrastructure will be taken away by the Chinese companies. It is understood that, as per the agreement, the revenue of these projects will be shared between China and Pakistan. But the reality is something different.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

While Chinese companies will take away their lion&rsquo;s share of profits, they will also consume the Pakistani share towards the repayment of loan and interest which they invested for this project. What Pakistan is going to get is a clear question. The situation is not going to improve anyway. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

Moreover, with the recent developments, such as declaring Chinese Yuan as major international trade currency, establishing of Chinese military bases in Pakistan and operationalising the Chinese Banks and other financial institutions in Pakistan, it is very much clear that even if the CPEC becomes successful, the Pakistan is going to be subservient to China anyway.&nbsp;

Opinion: Why China, and not Pakistan, stands to gain from CPEC

&nbsp;I have been watching the news on WION, that their journalist Taha Siddiqui was attacked while travelling to the airport, by a group of 10-12 armed men, speaking in clipped English. Is there something newsy in this?&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Being an avid Pak watcher, to my mind, none at all.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Let us see how &amp; why the Pakistan establishment is so malevolent to the media and more so to Indians.

&nbsp;

&nbsp;Pakistan was born in a hail of gunfire and extreme hatred. This set the trend for its animus relations with India, which have only deteriorated with each passing year. Four watersheds in the tumultuous Indo-Pak relationships have been the 1947 invasion of Kashmir, the 1965 conflict, the 1971 war and the Kargil fiasco. In each encounter with India, Pak has come out the worst, increasing its bitterness towards India.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

As far as the Pakistan media is concerned, it perhaps is the only organisation that is revealing the true state of affairs in the country, and putting their military on the mat.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

&nbsp;I vividly recall an incident at Bogra (East Pakistan) on 17 December 1971, where I witnessed the surrender of Pak troops; the Pakistani Colonel was in tears at the humiliation suffered by his military. Rather than introspect and see that this defeat was of their own making, they blamed India for splitting their country. &ldquo;Be prepared&rdquo;, the Colonel warned, &ldquo;we will avenge this humiliation. India will pay the penalty for this treachery in the years ahead&rdquo;. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

Another incident which is etched in my memory happened in 1993 during my tenure as Defence Attache with our Embassy in Riyadh.&nbsp; At a social function where many Pakistani military officers were present, I casually remarked, &ldquo;there is no difference between our cultures &ndash; we have the same dresses, the same eating habits, and acquired the same training prior to independence&rdquo;. The vitriolic and vehement rejoinder by a Brigadier was, &ldquo;there is nothing common &ndash; we come from a different and militarily superior race, we profess an entirely different religious group, and culturally we are as different as tea &amp; milk.&quot;&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Who attacked Taha? It could be any of the numerous agencies that work for the Pak establishment, but most likely the FSB (Filed Security Bureau) &ndash; this latter agency is notorious for intimidating foreigners, and certainly the Indians. Even visitors with a valid visa are regularly tailed and sometimes picked up, and jailed. Journalists, both local &amp; foreign, are fair game, and one may recall at least four instances in 2017 alone, where Human Right activists and journalists have vanished.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Then there was the case of the senior GEO TV journalist who was waylaid, and narrowly escaped being killed. Actually, the Pak State and the Military-ISI combine have given some sort of unspoken license to any agency be it the FSB, FIU (Field Intelligence Unit), the Police, and even average citizens to taunt and humiliate Indians, since the state is powerless to confront the Indian state. This is the coward&rsquo;s way of taking revenge. These &lsquo;deep state&rsquo; elements are now all powerful.

&nbsp;

First, there was the famous case of the American-Israeli journalist, Daniel Pearl, who was abducted in Karachi and later beheaded. Then in Lahore in January 2011, Raymond Allen Davis, a former United States Army soldier, and contractor with the Central Intelligence Agency was confronted by unidentified armed men in a busy market area. Davis fired, killing his assailants but was caught and jailed despite his professed diplomatic immunity. Davis was charged by Pakistani authorities with double murder and the illegal possession of a firearm. Because of American influence, Davis, managed to escape punishment for killing the two certainly Pak Government agents. Judges acquitted him on all charges and Davis immediately departed Pakistan.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Several years earlier an Indian diplomat, Rajesh Mittal, was roughed up by unidentified people, leading to a deadlock in Indo-Pak relationships. Then there was a case of an Indian diplomat and his wife being subjected to a high-speed car chase by Pakistani &lsquo;deep state&rsquo; goons &ndash; a chase during which the diplomat&#39;s car was struck, repeatedly, from by behind. This blatant disregard of international provisions and norms of decent behavior, by euphemistically called &lsquo;unidentified men&rdquo;, is nothing but action by Pak government agents, supported and abetted by the ISI&rsquo;s &lsquo;deep state&rsquo; system.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

&nbsp;All this is happening despite the threat of &lsquo;quid pro quo&rsquo; retaliation that the Indian state could resort to. The only persons with whom these &lsquo;deep state&rsquo; actors do not mess with are the Defence officers posted in the Indian Embassy in Islamabad &ndash; even the ISI realises that this &lsquo;red line&rsquo; must never be crossed, lest their officials in the Pak High Commission New Delhi, are paid back in the same coin.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

We have to wait and see how sternly the Indian government views Taha Siddiqui&rsquo;s case &ndash; yet another protest lodged with the Pak Foreign Office will be meaningless, as have been hundreds of others. The Indian government too needs to step in &ndash; coming as it does on the heels of the humiliating treatment meted out to Kulbushan Yadav&rsquo;s family.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Taha Siddiqui episode clearly demonstrates the impunity with which these agencies are operating. Our soft approach will only embolden them further. An attack on India&rsquo;s Fifth Estate is a virtual attack on the state itself.

&nbsp;

Filed Security Bureau and Field Intelligence Unit of Pakistan could possibly be responsible for the assault on Taha Siddiqui.

India will pay the penalty for this treachery in the years ahead”. Another incident which is etched in my memory happened in 1993 during my tenure as Defence Attache with our Embassy in Riyadh. At a social function where many Pakistani military officers were present, I casually remarked, “there is no difference between our cultures – we have the same dresses, the same eating habits, and acquired the same training prior to independence”. The vitriolic and vehement rejoinder by a Brigadier was, “there is nothing common – we come from a different and militarily superior race, we profess an entirely different religious group, and culturally we are as different as tea & milk." Who attacked Taha? It could be any of the numerous agencies that work for the Pak establishment, but most likely the FSB (Filed Security Bureau) – this latter agency is notorious for intimidating foreigners, and certainly the Indians. Even visitors with a valid visa are regularly tailed and sometimes picked up, and jailed. Journalists, both local & foreign, are fair game, and one may recall at least four instances in 2017 alone, where Human Right activists and journalists have vanished. This is the coward’s way of taking revenge. These ‘deep state’ elements are now all powerful. First, there was the famous case of the American-Israeli journalist, Daniel Pearl, who was abducted in Karachi and later beheaded. Then in Lahore in January 2011, Raymond Allen Davis, a former United States Army soldier, and contractor with the Central Intelligence Agency was confronted by unidentified armed men in a busy market area. Davis fired, killing his assailants but was caught and jailed despite his professed diplomatic immunity. Davis was charged by Pakistani authorities with double murder and the illegal possession of a firearm. Because of American influence, Davis, managed to escape punishment for killing the two certainly Pak Government agents. Judges acquitted him on all charges and Davis immediately departed Pakistan. Several years earlier an Indian diplomat, Rajesh Mittal, was roughed up by unidentified people, leading to a deadlock in Indo-Pak relationships. Then there was a case of an Indian diplomat and his wife being subjected to a high-speed car chase by Pakistani ‘deep state’ goons – a chase during which the diplomat's car was struck, repeatedly, from by behind. This blatant disregard of international provisions and norms of decent behavior, by euphemistically called ‘unidentified men”, is nothing but action by Pak government agents, supported and abetted by the ISI’s ‘deep state’ system. All this is happening despite the threat of ‘quid pro quo’ retaliation that the Indian state could resort to. The only persons with whom these ‘deep state’ actors do not mess with are the Defence officers posted in the Indian Embassy in Islamabad – even the ISI realises that this ‘red line’ must never be crossed, lest their officials in the Pak High Commission New Delhi, are paid back in the same coin. We have to wait and see how sternly the Indian government views Taha Siddiqui’s case – yet another protest lodged with the Pak Foreign Office will be meaningless, as have been hundreds of others. The Indian government too needs to step in – coming as it does on the heels of the humiliating treatment meted out to Kulbushan Yadav’s family. Taha Siddiqui episode clearly demonstrates the impunity with which these agencies are operating. Our soft approach will only embolden them further. An attack on India’s Fifth Estate is a virtual attack on the state itself. (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed above are the personal views of the author and do not reflect the views of ZMCL).

The US State Departement today issued travel advisory for its citzens placing India in Level 2 and Pakistan on Level 3 in the &lsquo;reconsider travel&rsquo; category.

The US government issued four new levels of threat assessments for its citizens - from &quot;normal precautions&quot; to &quot;no travel&quot;, every country has a travel advisory and is placed in one of these four categories.

India has been ranked Level 2 (exercise increased caution). The advisory on Pakistan said that terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Pakistan and may attack with little or no warning.

&ldquo;They target tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, military and government installations, airports, universities, ... schools, hospitals, places of worship, and local government facilities,&rdquo; the advisory said on Pakistan.

On India, the State Department identified &quot;crime and terrorism&quot; for Americans to exercise increased caution.

It asked Americans not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir, except eastern Ladakh and Leh and not to venture within 10 miles of the India-Pak border.

The State Department&#39;s highest &quot;do not travel&quot; advisory placed Colima, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Guerrero at the same warning level as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

US travel advisory: 'Exercise caution' while visiting India; reconsider travel to Pak

The US on Thursday expressed concern over the brutal attack on Pakistani journalist Taha Siddiqui.

&quot;We are always very concerned over any reports of violence against journalists, in Pakistan and around the world. We will continue to monitor developments,&quot; a State Department spokesperson said responding to a question on the attack on Siddiqui.

&quot;The United States values freedom of expression as a key component of democratic governance. An active civil society and tolerance of dissenting views are vital components of any democracy,&quot; the spokesperson said as several media watchdogs came out in condemnation of the attack on Siddique.

Siddiqui, the Pakistani bureau chief for the New Delhi- based television channel WION, was in Islamabad on his way to the airport when a group of men stopped his car on the highway, beat him, and threatened him.

The men then <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/saale-ko-goli-maaro-armed-men-shouted-as-they-tried-to-abduct-wions-pakistan-bureau-chief-29126" target="_blank">attempted to abduct</a> the journalist, according to Siddiqui.

He said he believed his attackers knew that he was on his way to the airport, and had orchestrated this assault because they knew it would take longer for people to realise he was missing as he was supposed to be in transit.

&quot;This brazen attempt to abduct journalist Taha Siddiqui on a busy highway in broad daylight suggests the perpetrators have no fear of facing any consequences,&quot; said Steven Butler, Asia programme coordinator of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

&quot;Pakistani authorities must end these lawless attacks against journalists and freedom of expression,&quot; Butler said as CPJ urged Pakistan to investigate the attempted abduction Siddiqui and prosecute the perpetrators.

&quot;This kidnap attempt is extremely worrying in a country where the lack of security for journalists and impunity for crimes of violence against them is a structural problem,&quot; said Daniel Bastard, the Asia-Pacific head of Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

&quot;Although Siddiqui has been harassed and threatened for months, he is a courageous journalist whose investigative reporting has never hesitated to implicate the military when appropriate, although criticising the armed forces is very dangerous for journalists in Pakistan. 'Monitoring developments in Pakistan,' says US State Department on WION's Taha Siddiqui's attempted abduction

Travel advisories issued by the US Department of State carry huge significance. Issued, primarily, to advise and warn American citizens who intend to visit other countries, such advisories end up making global news. Such as it did today.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

National news media took it very seriously as the USDS placed India in Level 2, urging American tourists to &#39;exercise caution&#39; if they do decide to travel to India.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The only consolation is the US has placed Pakistan in the Level 3. Beyond this level, there are only countries, such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and little-known places in the names of Colima, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Guerrero.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

So, the national pride, though slightly bruised, is not completely compromised. We are better than them. At the end of the day, that is what matters.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Though primarily designed to ensure the safety of American citizens, the travel advisories of the State Department have come to carry political significance over the years. The advisory is designed in such a way as to make it easily comprehensible, direct and impactful.

&nbsp;

But the potency of the list comes from its very simplicity. The colour coded map of the world facilitates an &quot;at a glance&quot; approach. Without knowing so much about any region of the world, one can immediately know which parts will be safe or dangerous for us. Unwittingly, in your mind, looking at the picture, you would conjure up a hierarchical structure of dangerous to safest nations. Your vacation plan would decisively and unquestioningly block out those regions of the world which comes in Red, Brown and Yellow. &nbsp;

The travel advisory has warned US citizens of prevalent crime and terrorism in India. Fair enough. Recently, a Swiss couple was beaten up. A heinous act. Both the government and media condemned it in no uncertain terms. African nationals have been treated with much meanness in this country. One of the crimes specifically mentioned in the advisory was rape. Yes, that is a problem too.&nbsp;

Having said that, none of these problems are unique to India. It will be such a loss if stop visiting countries based on what the travel advisories have to say.&nbsp;

I still remember how my husband and I, as PhD students in the US, consulted the advisory but did not let it influence our decision to visit either Mexico or Colombia. Or, more recently, Jordan.&nbsp;

These are all level 2 countries like India.&nbsp;

Colombia was our honeymoon trip. Everybody said no to us visiting Colombia. Infested with drug dealers, H1N1 disease, abduction. The list of negatives was just endless.&nbsp;

We had a similar experience with Mexico. Known as a country of thugs and criminals, I had an exceptional experience in the city of Cancun. This was 6 months after Colombia. Two civilians were killed when officers fired live rounds to disburse crowds that attacked a police station in Pakistan on Wednesday in a protest over the rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl.

Police recovered the body of Zainab Ansari on Tuesday from a garbage dumpster in the town of Kasur in eastern Pakistan, four days after she was reported missing.

It was the twelfth incident of a girl being abducted, raped, and killed in the past year in Kasur district, police say. Residents have been furious at the authorities for what they see as a failure to investigate such cases.

The spokesman for Pakistan&#39;s Punjab province, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, told Reuters that protesters turned violent and attacked a local police office.

&quot;They started throwing stones at the office and some of armed protesters shot bullets at police. In order to stop them, police resorted to aerial firing,&quot; Khan said, adding that two people were killed and one wounded as a result.

Locals said police responded with undue force.

&quot;A peaceful protest was taking place, some students threw stones and police responded by firing at the crowd,&quot; Saleem ur Rehman, a resident who was at the protest, told Reuters. &quot;The law and order situation here is really bad and there have been many such incidents. That is what the protest was about.&quot;

Ansari&#39;s parents, who were not in the country when their daughter was kidnapped, returned on Wednesday.

&quot;I want justice! I want justice!&quot; Zainab&#39;s mother cried, surrounded by reporters at the international airport in the capital Islamabad.

Ansari&#39;s case has attracted the attention of the country&#39;s civilian and military leadership, with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif calling for immediate action.

Police in Kasur deny they have been lax in investigating child abductions in the town. Regional police officer Zulfiqar Hameed told Reuters that four kidnappers had been arrested and another killed during an arrest attempt.

&quot;Investigations reveal that in each case a paedophile kidnaps little girls, rapes them and kills them,&quot; he said.

The case of Ansari would soon be solved, he said: &quot;We have got CCTV footage that shows a young man taking her along. We will catch him very soon,&quot; he said, adding that 95 DNA samples had been taken from suspects.

A number of police officials have been transferred out of the region for failing to investigate complaints of missing children since 2015, when authorities uncovered what they called a paedophile ring linked to a prominent local family. At least two people have been convicted in the case, in which authorities say hundreds of children in the district were abused.

Two dead in protests over Pakistan girl's rape and murder

The distraught father of a 7-year- old girl who was brutally raped and murdered in Pakistan has blamed the &quot;callous attitude&quot; of police as the government roped in military intelligence and the ISI to probe the horrific incident that shocked the country.

The girl in Kasur district of Punjab province was abducted last week outside her home. Her body was found in a rubbish dump on Tuesday.

She had gone to a religious tuition centre near her house in Kasur city, some 50 km from Lahore, on January 5 from where a man said to be a &#39;serial killer&#39; abducted her, police said.

Two people have died in the protests that broke out after the rape and murder of the 8-year-old girl

The distraught father of a 7-year- old girl who was brutally raped and murdered in Pakistan has blamed the "callous attitude" of police as the government roped in military intelligence and the ISI to probe the horrific incident that shocked the country. The girl in Kasur district of Punjab province was abducted last week outside her home. Her body was found in a rubbish dump on Tuesday. She had gone to a religious tuition centre near her house in Kasur city, some 50 km from Lahore, on January 5 from where a man said to be a 'serial killer' abducted her, police said. Taha Siddiqui kidnapping bid: A chronology of abductions in Pakistan

Recent years have seen a remarkable era of Pakistan-China friendship. Apparently, everyone in Pakistan is singing songs that China is their real friend and it will be purely due to China that their country will rise from the ashes like a miracle.

&nbsp;

Over the last so many decades, Pakistani rulers have been emphasising on their Islamic orientation, criticising the instances wherever they felt that Muslims are facing discriminations. For instance, Pakistan&#39;s political establishment went berserk over atrocities committed against Palestinian, Rohingya Muslims, during Balkan Conflict at Kosovo, the Chechnya debacle among. Criticism flowed fast and steady.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

But a serious question arises as to how much is the People&#39;s Republic of China, the mentor and &#39;best friend&#39; of Pakistan, concerned and sensitive about the second largest and the fastest growing religion in the world?

&nbsp;

To find the answer, you must look towards the north-west edge of Pakistan and Indian province of Kashmir. In the map, you will find Xinxiang province of the People&rsquo;s Republic of China where an ethnic Islamic minority called Uighurs have been fighting for over six decades for their existence. They have been receiving a second-class treatment from rulers of the Peoples Republic of China; their religious and cultural autonomy is under serious threat.

&nbsp;

Uighurs are a minority of Turkish-speaking people of about 10 million population. While Pakistan considers itself as the true defender of Islam, China has banned Islamic activities in its Xinxiang province for Uighur Muslims. Religious education is totally banned for Uighurs and is punishable by law. The religious prohibition by China includes control over religious activities, practitioners, schools, cultural institutions, publication of Islamic literature and even personal appearance and behaviour of Uighur Muslims. They cannot display any symbol of Islam, for example, beard or Islamic dresses.

&nbsp;

Not only this, all Imams of the mosques are supposed to vet themselves on a regular basis, attend self-criticism sessions where they are to criticise their own religion. They are forbidden to practice anything which can be termed as a symbol of slightest separatism as per the policy of China, and it is punishable by death. Last year the Imams were called for a gathering and made to dance on the tunes of China. The video is still available on social media.&nbsp;

<div class="ui-state-default" contenteditable="false">

<a class="close-mark close-div" href="#" id="jqclosemark">&times;</a></div>

There are cases where people have been tortured and punished just because they were in possession of a version of Holy Koran. There have been times where the peaceful activists have been arrested, tortured and executed even without any evidence. There are so many stories of atrocities of Uighurs in the area, however, due to media censorship in the country, they don&rsquo;t come out.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The mass genocide of Uighurs started in 1949 with the Chinese occupation of territory by General Wang Zhen. Things have not changed much since then. Only the Generals changed over the years, the genocide of innocent population continues.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The Chinese influence in the area has risen very sharply. The Uighurs which used to dominate the region with over 90% population share in 1955 has now dropped to 43% because of a state-sponsored mass settlement of residents from the eastern part of China. Many of these settlers include retired soldiers from the Chinese military and seasonal workers employed in various industries in the region. China has already succeeded in changing the demographic pattern of the area.

&nbsp;

India&#39;s neighbour who is so concerned about Islam has always turned a blind eye to this matter. No one in Pakistan government ever speaks about the religious freedom of Uighurs in China. Their support for Islam falls through when it comes to Uighurs of China. If we compare the state of religious freedom across the world, China&#39;s track record would be the worst due to their treatment of Uighurs in Xinxiang.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

So, what is the reason for this behaviour of not only our nuclear-powered neighbour but also other Islamic countries? The reason lies in the belief of the West about the impressive growth and state-led development of China in last 30 years. In the current scenario, every country is dependent upon Chinese imports and wants to enter their multitrillion-dollar market so that they can also make money.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The case of Pakistan is even worst. The economy of the country is going through a dangerous turbulence. Western countries, as well as IMF, have cut down on aid. The domestic production is on a decline and corruption among the top leaders of the country has become a common scene. The only support is Chinese investment which is aimed at making Pakistan its second territory. If Pakistan starts showing their genuine concern towards Uighur Muslims, it may lose multibillion-dollar projects of China. In the current wake of China establishing its industrial, economic and military establishments in Pakistan rapidly, the day is not far when it will be another territory of China. And in such case, another Xinxiang is in making now.&nbsp;

Martin Guptill belted New Zealand to an eight-wicket win over Pakistan in the second ODI. The game was earlier delayed and finally shortened due to rain in Nelson on Tuesday.

After Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat they recovered from an early collapse&nbsp;to reach 246&nbsp;in their 50 overs&nbsp;on the back of half-centuries by Mohammad Hafeez (60). Also, Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan contributed well with their bats by scoring 51 and 52 respectively.&nbsp;Lochie Ferguson was New Zealand&#39;s chief wicket-taker with three for 39.

New Zealand were 64 for two after 14 overs in reply when the rain set in. Under the Duckworth-Lewis revision, New Zealand had 11 overs to make a further 87 runs when play resumed.

Pakistan did have early success with the ball by taking early wickets of Colin Munro and&nbsp;Kane Williamson. Munro was&nbsp;taken in the first over itself, he did not score a single run whereas,&nbsp;Williamson was gone for 19, New Zealand was at 47/2 in the 10th over.

But the Pakistan bowlers were not allowed to settle when the weather cleared as Guptill and Taylor pounded the boundaries.&nbsp;Guptill&#39;s whirlwind knock included five fours and five sixes while Ross Taylor, keen to yield the strike in their 104-run partnership, had only four boundaries in his 45 off 43 deliveries.

Guptill scored magnificent 55 off 31 balls to reach the revised target of 151 in 25 overs with seven balls&nbsp;to spare and got player of the match for his impeccable performance.

The security forces immediately cordoned off the blast site, whereas, rescue teams rushed to the spot and moved the injured persons to nearby hospitals. "At least five policemen and a pedestrian were killed and 16 others were wounded when a suicide bomber on a motorcycle struck the bus," senior police official Abdul Razzaq Cheema told AFP. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack, he added. Quetta is the capital of Balochistan province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan and has oil and gas resources but is afflicted by Islamist militancy, sectarian violence and a separatist insurgency. Police and troops have been battling Islamist militants and separatist groups in mineral-rich Balochistan for more than a decade.

As China sided with Pakistan over US administration continued pressure on terrorism, Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning fired another warning shot at the Abbasi government.

Manning told reporters that Pakistan should ensure that Taliban and Haqqani leadership and attack planners &quot;should no longer be able to find safe haven or conduct operations from Pakistani soil&quot;, as relations between to the two allies on the war on terror continued to be in free fall.

&ldquo;Our expectations are straightforward, the US has conveyed to Pakistan specific and concrete steps that it could take,&quot; Manning added.&nbsp;

The US had last week discontinued $900 million aid to Pakistan asserting that the country hadn&#39;t done enough to take out terror cells, Manning reassured the Pak officials saying that suspension of funds wasn&#39;t permanent and the money wasn&#39;t being diverted somewhere else.

Pakistan has been facing increasing pressure for the past several months from the Trump administration to crack down on terrorism. Both President Trump and top US officials have repeatedly slammed Pak officials in public forum over terror-related issues.

In fact, CIA chief Mike Pompeo speaking in CBS news channel said: &quot;If they(Pakistan) fix this problem, we&#39;re happy to continue to engage with them and be their partner. But if they don&#39;t, we&#39;re going to protect America.&quot;

&quot;We see the Pakistanis continuing to provide safe harbour, havens inside of Pakistan for terrorists who present risks to the United States of America,&quot; Pompeo said in CBS.

Pakistan&#39;s ally China on Monday said it opposed &quot;linking terrorism with any certain country&quot; after the White House said Xi&#39;s regime could play a vital role to convince Pakistan to take steps against the Haqqani Network and the Taliban.

WION Evening News Brief, January 9, 2018

Pakistan is believed to have told US interlocutors that a major military offensive against the Taliban from both sides of the Afghan border, if failed, will have negative consequences for the entire region, according to a media report today.

The key element in the new US strategy for Afghanistan is to launch a two-pronged military offensive that inflicts a military defeat on the Taliban and forces them to join the Afghan reconciliation process on Kabul&#39;s conditions, diplomatic sources told Dawn News.

The paper in a detailed report from Washington reported that Pakistanis do not disagree with the basic thrust of the American argument but they have one major worry: What if it fails?

Trump in August unveiled his South Asia policy and vowed to boost strategic partnership with India in Afghanistan. He had called for tougher measures against Pakistan if it fails to cooperate with the US in its fight against terrorism.

Pakistani officials, who have interacted with US officials on this issue, say that they too have the same ambition: ridding the region, particularly Afghanistan, of militants.

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis at his weekend briefing at the Pentagon urged Islamabad to cooperate with the US in defeating the Afghan Taliban, including the Haqqani Network which, he says, has safe havens inside Pakistan and uses them to recuperate and re-launch attacks into Afghanistan.

While Pakistanis reject the US charge that they have allowed the Haqqani Network to maintain safe havens, they appear more eager to understand the US plan to defeat the Taliban.

But they fear that a major military offensive, without engaging some Taliban factions in direct talks first, could be counter-productive. The Taliban might outlive this offensive too, and deal with it &quot;lying low in their mountain fastness, as they did with previous offensives,&quot; as one interlocutor said.

And in the process Pakistan will lose whatever influence it has. With all lines of communication closed, the Taliban will become even more dangerous, particularly for Pakistan, which has always faced the blowback of previous adventures in Afghanistan, whether launched by the Russians or Americans, the report said.

The Pakistani officials their interlocutors that the country is still coping with the consequences of Britain&#39;s Afghan adventures. Those adventures led to the creation of FATA, a buffer zone between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which later became the source of many troubles.

The Trump administration, however, does not seem much interested in the Pakistani argument, at least for now. But it would if the Taliban outlive the proposed offensive as well, the report said.&nbsp;

Pakistan cautions US about consequences of anti-Taliban offensive

China today said it is opposed to the US &quot;finger pointing&quot; at Pakistan and linking it with terrorism, insisting that the responsibility of cracking down on terror outfits cannot be placed on a particular country.

China&#39;s support for its all-weather ally came as the US stepped up its efforts to pressure Pakistan to eliminate terror safe havens on its soil.

The US last week suspended approximately $2 billion in security assistance to Pakistan for its failure to take decisive action against terror groups like the Taliban and the Haqqani Network.

&quot;China always opposed linking terrorism with any certain country and we don&#39;t agree to place the responsibility of anti-terrorism on a certain country,&quot; Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a media briefing.

He was responding to a question on a White House official&#39;s remarks that China could play a helpful role in convincing Pakistan that it was in its national interest to crack down on terror safe havens.

&quot;We have stressed many times that Pakistan has made important sacrifices and contributions to the global anti-terrorism cause,&quot; Lu said.

&quot;Countries should strengthen anti-terrorism cooperation on the basis of mutual respect instead of finger pointing at each other. This is not conducive to the global terrorism efforts,&quot; he said.

China has been vocal in extending support to Pakistan since US President Donald Trump increased rhetoric against Islamabad providing safe havens for terrorists.

Trump in a New Year&#39;s Day tweet accused the country of giving nothing to the US but &quot;lies and deceit&quot; and providing &quot;safe haven&quot; to terrorists in return for USD 33 billion aid over the last 15 years.

Chinese media has been speculating that Trump&#39;s efforts to step up pressure on Pakistan may move it closer to Islamabad as Beijing is involved in a number of projects in the country under the&nbsp; $50 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The Chinese official media is highlighting reports that Pakistan may allow China to build a&nbsp;military base at Jiwani located close to Iran?s Chabahar port, which is being jointly developed by India, Iran and Afghanistan. Jiwani is also close to the strategic Gwadar port in Balochistan which is being developed by China.

While defending Pakistan, Lu said China at the same time backed international counter-terrorism efforts.

&quot;First and foremost, I would like to say that terrorism is the common enemy of the international community. Cracking down of terrorism calls for the joint efforts from the international community,&quot; he said.

&quot;Actually, China is defending countries that have been making anti-terrorism efforts in a just and fair way. China also welcomes all the global joint efforts in terms of counter-terrorism on the basis of mutual trust and mutual respect,&quot; he said. PTI

Opposed to US 'finger pointing' at Pakistan on terror-related issues: China

The Islamic State (IS) militant group poses a major threat to Pakistan and is alarmingly increasing its presence in the country, according to a think- tank report.

Pakistan has been denying that ISIS had an organised presence in the country, however, even though the terrorist group has claimed responsibility for several other attacks in Baluchistan in recent years.

The security report by Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS) yesterday stated that the ISIS, especially active in northern Sindh and Balochistan, was also behind the abduction and killing of two Chinese nationals last year, Dawn News reported.

The PIPS shared the findings of its security analysis titled Special Report 2017, providing an insight into security challenges of Pakistan.

&quot;Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jamaatul Ahrar and others with similar objectives perpetrated 58 per cent attacks, while 37 per cent and 5 per cent of the attacks were carried out by nationalist insurgents and violent sectarian groups respectively,&quot; it said.

The report has also highlighted that Baloch nationalist- insurgent groups, especially Balochistan Liberation Army and Balochistan Liberation Front were only second to TTP as far as their threat capability was concerned.

The report also noted the alarming increase in the footprint of ISIS, especially in Balochistan and northern Sindh as it carried out the deadliest attacks in those provinces. It said that footprints of ISIS was increasing and it &quot;killed 153 in 6 deadliest attacks&quot;.

It said, &quot;down 16 per cent from the year before, 370 terrorist attacks took place in Pakistan (in 2017), killing 815 and injuring 1,736 people.&quot;

It said that Balochistan and the tribal region remained critical areas with 288 and 253 terrorism-related killings, respectively, in 2017.

The report said that security forces and law enforcement agencies killed 524 militants in military/security operations as well as armed clashes and encounters.

It also reported that Pakistan&#39;s National Security Policy is set to be released in 2018 and it will take into account especially global and regional scenarios, including the evolving Pakistan-US relations.

WION evening news brief, January 8, 2018

Pakistan today freed 147 Indian fishermen who were imprisoned in Karachi eight months ago for allegedly fishing in its territorial waters, according to a media report.

Their release follows a December announcement by Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal that nearly 300 Indian fishermen would be freed in two phases till January 8.

On December 28, Pakistan had released the first batch of 145 Indian fishermen, who were held there on similar charges.

The process for returning the 147 fishermen has been initiated, as they were set to travel to Lahore this afternoon on the Allama Iqbal Express from the Karachi Cantonment railway station, the Dawn reported.

From Lahore, the fishermen will cross the Wagah border and return home, the report quoted Karachi&#39;s Malir jail officials as saying.

They said the travel expenses of the fishermen were being borne by the Edhi Foundation, a Pakistan-based not-for-profit welfare organisation.

&quot;Some 262 Indian fishermen remain imprisoned at Malir jail still,&quot; jail superintendent Hassan Sehto said.

Fishermen from Pakistan and India are frequently detained for illegally fishing in each other&#39;s territorial waters since the Arabian Sea does not have a clearly defined marine border and the wooden boats lack the technology to avoid being drifting away.

Owing to prolonged bureaucratic and legal procedures, the fishermen usually languish in jail for several months.

A number of non-governmental organisations in both India and Pakistan have raised the issue, pressing their governments to release arrested fishermen without much delay.

Pakistan releases 147 Indian fishermen, 262 remain imprisoned

United States President Donald Trump needs to take a step back, exercise caution and patience, and focus more on having quiet diplomatic negotiations with Pakistan on the issue of neutralising support to terror elements operating from its soil, says an editorial in the New York Times.

The editorial is of the view that President Trump can ill-afford walking away from Pakistan at this juncture of his presidency, and will need to acknowledge that Islamabad has and will continue to be a source of vital intelligence.

He would also have to keep in mind that Pakistan has the world`s fastest-growing nuclear arsenal, which has always been a matter of regional and global concern.

&quot;Whether Pakistan will cooperate after the aid freeze remains to be seen. Initially, some Pakistani officials reacted harshly to the announcement, which came as a surprise, but on Friday, a Foreign Ministry statement talked about the need for mutual respect and patience as the two countries address common threats,&quot; says the editorial, suggesting that tone and engagement is now even-tempered.

&quot;Mr Trump could marshal other diplomatic tools to see if more constructive cooperation with Pakistan is possible. One idea would be to harness his new friendships with the leaders of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to shut down Haqqani and other Taliban fund-raising efforts in the Persian Gulf. This would, of course, require quiet negotiations, not shouting,&quot; the editorial adds.

It further goes on to say that Pakistan has posed a dilemma for the United States for long, and the Trump administration`s announcement this week that it would freeze nearly all military aid to Pakistan, roughly USD 1.3 billion annually, should for now just be seen as an act of initial frustration and bombast.

It warns that Pakistan has the potential to retaliate by denying access, shutting down supply lines to Afghanistan, ally more closely with China and be more hard-line in its rivalry with India.

China could once again be the beneficiary of a Trump decision whose signature tune is estrangement with and from long-time partners.

The NYT editorial says that while Trump may have highlighted a real point, &quot;he has given no assurance that he would not make matters worse.&quot;

Americans last cut off assistance to Pakistan in the 1990s after it tested a nuclear weapon and underwent a military coup, creating distrust between the two countries that has never dissipated. But after September 11, 2001, the relationship transformed overnight.

Washington has demanded that Islamabad perform on counter-terrorism in return for new aid. Since then, Pakistan has played a double game, accepting American funding while backing militants who protect Pakistani interests in Afghanistan and Kashmir.President Trump is not the first to call a spade a spade.

In 2011, Admiral Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Senate committee that the Haqqani Network was a &quot;veritable arm&quot; of the Pakistani security service. &quot;Extremist organisations serving as proxies of the Government of Pakistan are attacking Afghan troops and civilians as well as US&nbsp;soldiers,&quot; he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He would also have to keep in mind that Pakistan has the world`s fastest-growing nuclear arsenal, which has always been a matter of regional and global concern. "Whether Pakistan will cooperate after the aid freeze remains to be seen. Initially, some Pakistani officials reacted harshly to the announcement, which came as a surprise, but on Friday, a Foreign Ministry statement talked about the need for mutual respect and patience as the two countries address common threats," says the editorial, suggesting that tone and engagement is now even-tempered. "Mr Trump could marshal other diplomatic tools to see if more constructive cooperation with Pakistan is possible. One idea would be to harness his new friendships with the leaders of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to shut down Haqqani and other Taliban fund-raising efforts in the Persian Gulf. This would, of course, require quiet negotiations, not shouting," the editorial adds. The NYT editorial says that while Trump may have highlighted a real point, "he has given no assurance that he would not make matters worse." Americans last cut off assistance to Pakistan in the 1990s after it tested a nuclear weapon and underwent a military coup, creating distrust between the two countries that has never dissipated. In 2011, Admiral Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Senate committee that the Haqqani Network was a "veritable arm" of the Pakistani security service. "Extremist organisations serving as proxies of the Government of Pakistan are attacking Afghan troops and civilians as well as US soldiers," he said.
