Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was watching and monitoring when the Indian Armed Forces launched "Operation Sindoor", carrying out missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This comes in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, that claimed the lives of 26 people.

Operation Sindoor: India launches strikes on Pakistan, Islamabad vows to settle the score

The Indian stock market ended Wednesday’s session on a muted but steady note, with the Sensex closing near the 80,800 mark and the Nifty finishing just above 24,200. This came after India confirmed overnight strikes on nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir — part of its retaliatory campaign named Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, including foreign tourists.
The Sensex closed in the green, up over 100 points after a volatile session during which the index see-sawed between gains and losses. Meanwhile, the Nifty closed marginally higher after gyrating wildly, reflecting caution amid geopolitical uncertainty but also confidence in India’s economic fundamentals.
Early in the session, benchmark indices opened with losses — the BSE Sensex at 79,948.80, down 0.86 per cent, and Nifty 50 down 0.6 per cent to 24,233.30. However, strong intraday recoveries were led by gains in defence and aerospace stocks such as Hindustan Aeronautics, Bharat Dynamics, BEL, Mazagon Dock, and Paras Defence, which rose between 1.3 per cent and 4 per cent amid expectations of increased government spending on strategic sectors.
While auto, FMCG, IT, and pharma sectors posted gains, metal, realty, and energy indices lagged. The Indian rupee remained stable, and bond yields showed little change — suggesting that institutional investors perceive the strikes as tactical and unlikely to trigger prolonged conflict.

Pakistan markets plunge on panic selling
Pakistani stocks endured a rough day as investors panicked over potential military escalation, international isolation, and further economic deterioration. The KSE-100 index closed at 1,10,009.03, down 3,560 points, making it one of the steepest one-day falls in recent memory — despite the index trading well above the 1,00,000-point mark in recent months.
Losses were widespread across banking, telecom, cement, and energy sectors, all of which are sensitive to external shocks. Pakistan’s economic fundamentals, already strained by high inflation, low foreign reserves, and stringent IMF conditions, were ill-equipped to absorb the added pressure from rising cross-border hostilities.
The Pakistani rupee weakened further in forex markets, and analysts warned of increased volatility if the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) worsens.

The cross-border market volatility followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor, a coordinated series of precision missile strikes on nine terrorist infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. The strikes were in direct retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives, including foreign tourists.
According to Indian defence officials, the targeted sites were affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen — spanning locations in Bahawalpur, Muridke, Sialkot, Kotli, Barnala, and Muzaffarabad. India termed the operation as “measured and non-escalatory,” focused on dismantling terror infrastructure without civilian casualties.
Pakistan, however, condemned the strikes as an “act of war,” and has reportedly opened retaliatory shelling across multiple sectors along the Line of Control (LoC), pushing the region to the brink of further escalation.

Briefing the country on Operation Sindoor, women officers Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri have said that the Pahalgam terror attack is the biggest attack on Indian civilians after the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. They said that the main reason for the attack was to hamper the tourism and development of Jammu and Kashmir. They also said that the attack was done to provoke religious riots in the country.
Naming 'The Resistance Front' (TRF), Misri said that Lashkar-E-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) used the group for terror activities in India. He also said that Pakistan has a history of shielding terror groups and terror outfits. He said that the Pakistani government has not taken any step in handling the terror groups but has resorted to blame game.
"Pakistan has emerged as safe haven for terrorists in the world. Banned international terrorists find it safe from being punished in this country. Pakistan is also known for deliberately misleading the world and international platforms...Despite a fortnight having passed, there has been no demonstrable step from Pakistan against terrorists' infrastructure in its area," Misri said.
Further, Misri highlighted that India exercised its right to respond under Operation Sindoor.
"Our intelligence indicated that further attacks against India are impending. Thus, compulsion, both to deter and prevent and hence earlier this morning, India exercised its right to respond to deter such more cross-border terrorism... Our actions were measured and non-escalatory, proportionate and responsible. They focused on dismantling terrorists' infrastructure," Misri added.

Operation Sindoor: 'Terrorism cannot be tolerated': World leaders react to India's strike in Pakistan

India woke up to the news of the launch of Operation Sindoor, where the Indian Armed Forces conducted a series pf high-precision strikes, targeting nine terror camps and launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The action was a direct response to the recent deadly assault in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were gunned down by terrorists. Amid heightened tensions between the two countries, India will be conducting a major nation-wide emergency mock drill - Operation Abhyaas- to enhance the emergency preparedness of civilians.

The exercise will commence with the sounding of an air raid siren, signifying a simulated attack. These sirens will be strategically placed at police stations, high-rise structures, hospitals, and educational institutions. Upon hearing the alert, citizens will be guided to designated safe zones, such as bunkers, basements, or structurally reinforced buildings.

Rafale fighter jets: These two-seat fighters can fly long distances (about 1,850 km on a strike mission) and carry more than 9 tonnes of weapons. This “heavy lift” capability lets a Rafale carry multiple missiles and bombs. They are also equipped with advanced sensors and radar, allowing pilots to find and track targets with high precision even at night or in bad weather.

SCALP cruise missiles: SCALP (Storm Shadow) is an air-to-ground cruise missile. Weighing about 1,300 kg with its 450 kg warhead, it flies at subsonic speed on a programmed route. It can travel around 250 km to strike a target deep inside enemy territory. The missile uses GPS and terrain mapping to navigate. It also uses a high-resolution infrared camera for final accuracy.
HAMMER guided bombs: HAMMER (AASM) is a kit that attaches to a standard 250 kg bomb, adding a rocket booster, wings and guidance. This turns an unguided bomb into a smart bomb with a range of over 70 km. It can be guided by GPS or by an infrared/laser seeker for pinpoint accuracy.

Operation Sindoor: Targeted root of cross-border terror planning

India struck several terrorist-linked locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the wee hours of Wednesday (May 7). The multi-branch military operation is named Operation Sindoor. The strikes were aimed at dismantling the training and logistical infrastructure of terrorist groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Hizbul Mujahideen, and others, that have been known to have terror bases in these regions for years.
A total of nine sites were hit, which includes Bahawalpur, Muridke and Kotli. Here is why India chose these places to carry out Operation Sindoor.

Bahawalpur: Jaish-e-Mohammed Headquarters

Bahawalpur has long been known as the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed. Masood Azhar leads the terrorist organisation and has been responsible for the attack on the Indian parliament in December 2001, the 2016 Pathankot attack on an Indian air base, and the Pulwama attack in 2019 in which 44 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel died.

Muridke: Lashkar-e-Taiba Base and Training Ground

Muridke is only 40 kilometres from Lahore and is a major commercial hub. Lashkar-e-Taiba and its charitable wing, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, have terror facilities spread over more than 200 acres here. LeT was responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attack in which 10 members of the terror group opened fire and bombed several places in Mumbai for over four days, killing a total of 175 people.

Kotli: Makaz Raheel Shahid and Markaz Abbas

Kotli lies in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and is a major training facility for terrorists, especially suicide bombers. India has often flagged the place for preparing insurgents to carry out attacks against India.
Mehmoona camp

The Mehmoona camp near Sialkot was a hub for the terror group Hizbul Mujahideen that carried out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in the past. Although it isn't seen to be as active today, India believes terrorists are still trained here who then cross the border with support from local networks.
Other places include the Bilal Camp, which is a JeM launchpad. Shawai Nallah Cam in Muzaffarabad has been linked to attacks in Kashmir Valley, especially Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam in northern Kashmir. Sarjal / Tehra Kalan and Barnala, Bhimber, are located near the International Border and the Line of Control and are used by terrorists to infiltrate India.

Operation Sindoor targets: India struck nine sites in Pakistan to dismantle terror networks that have long existed and operated from these places. India News

Bahawalpur: Jaish-e-Mohammed Headquarters Bahawalpur has long been known as the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed. Muridke: Lashkar-e-Taiba Base and Training Ground Muridke is only 40 kilometres from Lahore and is a major commercial hub. Kotli: Makaz Raheel Shahid and Markaz Abbas Kotli lies in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and is a major training facility for terrorists, especially suicide bombers. India has often flagged the place for preparing insurgents to carry out attacks against India. Makaz Raheel Shahid in Kotli, which has camps and training centres of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen, and Markaz Abbas of the Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group were hit here. Mehmoona camp The Mehmoona camp near Sialkot was a hub for the terror group Hizbul Mujahideen that carried out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in the past. Operation Sindoor: Why did India choose to strike Muridke, Bahawalpur and other sites?

The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, carrying out a series of precision strikes targeting nine terror targets, including terror camps and launchpads, in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Ministry of Defence confirmed the strikes early Wednesday, calling them a “focused, measured and non-escalatory” response to the recent attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where terrorists brutally killed 26 civilians after identifying and segregating them.
Pakistan again violates the ceasefire agreement by firing artillery in Bhimber Gali in Poonch, Rajauri area. The Indian Army is responding appropriately in a calibrated manner. Heavy exchange of artillery fire at LoC in J&K.

Operation Sindoor: Families of Pahalgam terror attack victims react as India strikes terror targets in Pakistan

Indian Armed Forces announced Operation Sindoor on Wednesday (May 7) as they struck terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir weeks after a deadly terror attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir.
The military struck at least nine sites, including the headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke and the Jaish-e-Mohammad headquarters in Bahawalpur, as per reports.

“Altogether, nine (9) sites have been targeted. Our actions have been focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and the method of execution,” India's statement said.

Why the name Operation Sindoor?

While there's no official reason behind the name of the operation, there are many speculations as to why India must have chosen this name.
All of the victims of the deadly terror attacks were male. Sindoor could be a tribute to women who lost their sons, husbands, fathers, or partners to the attack.

Among the dead were sons, fathers, and husbands. And in Indian culture, when a woman loses her husband, she wipes off her indoor, the red line in her hair that symbolises marriage.
By naming this military response “Operation Sindoor”, India made it clear: this was for those women who lost everything.
