After US, UK 'considering' boycott of Beijing winter Olympics

<p>A consultant appointed by the Gujarat government has identified 22 sites in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar cities with a "potential" to host the Olympics, and the state government will soon engage with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to convey its intention to host the games in 2036, an official said on Friday.</p>

<p>The development has come nearly five months after the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) invited proposals from consultants to conduct a "gap analysis"&nbsp;to assess the existing infrastructure in the city and find out what is needed to make it a potential venue for the summer Olympic games.</p>

<p>PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited, the consulting agency appointed by the AUDA, on Thursday made a presentation to Gujarat Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar on infrastructure gap assessment, concept plan and roadmap for hosting 2036 Summer Olympics, a state government release stated.</p>

<p>During the meeting with officials concerned, the chief secretary reviewed the master plan of the upcoming Sardar Patel Sports Enclave in Motera, and the preliminary infrastructure feasibility study for hosting of the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, it stated.</p>

<p>As per the release, a detailed assessment of all the key sports and non-sports facilities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar has been undertaken, aligned with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee.</p>

<p>"It was found that 22 sites in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar have a potential for hosting of the future Olympic Games. It is also observed that out of these 22 potential venues, minor modifications are required in six sites for hosting of the Olympic Games," it said.</p>

<p>While temporary facilities can be created at six sites, the consultant proposed that the remaining sites require significant redevelopment to accommodate additional sports, it was stated.</p>

<p>Apart from this, the assessment suggested venues including Shivrajpur Beach in Devbhumi Dwarka district and Polo Forest in Sabarkantha district for hosting various water and mountain sports, it said.</p>

<p>"Moreover, places in Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and other national venues may also be considered for hosting of ocean sports, mountain sports and select other sports that are required to be held nationally at various locations," the release said.</p>

<p>The state government will "soon commence engagement with International Olympic Committee (IOC)" to convey Ahmedabad city's intention to host the Olympics, it was stated.</p>

<p>The 10-point document, which was prepared over the course of two years in consultation with more than 250 athletes and other stakeholders, will be rolled out after the Beijing Winter Games next year, replacing the guidelines issued in 2015.</p>

<p>The new framework also moves away from the old policy that said transgender athletes would be allowed to compete provided their testosterone levels were below a certain limit for at least 12 months before their first competition.</p>

<p>"You don't need to use testosterone (to decide who can compete) at all. But this is guidance, it's not an absolute rule," said IOC medical director Richard Budgett.</p>

<p>The new framework comes just months after New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard in Tokyo became the first transgender&nbsp;athlete to compete at the Olympics Games.</p>

<p>The IOC also said sex testing and "invasive physical examinations" used to verify an athlete's gender were "disrespectful" and "potentially harmful".</p>

<p>"We really want to make sure that athletes are not pressured or coerced into making a harmful decision about their bodies," said Magali Martowicz, IOC head of human rights.</p>

<p>The 23-year-old Chopra scripted history when he won India's maiden Olympic medal in athletics — a javelin gold in the recently-concluded Games in Tokyo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After winning the medal, Neeraj spoke exclusively to WION about his journey and dreams. He said it is a "happy moment" for him as he led India to its best-ever haul in the Olympics with seven medals — a gold, two silvers and four bronze medals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On his win, he said, "It's hard to believe at the moment, sometimes I feel it it's a dream. But for me, it's a dream come true. Gold in the Olympics is a different feeling and I also feel great to have done this for our country."</p>

<p>He also reflected his thoughts on some Indian legends of athletics like Milkha Singh, PT Usha, Anju Bobby George. Neeraj said, "I want to dedicate my medal to great Indian athletes like Milkha Singh and PT Usha"</p>

<p>"Definitely that's [gold medal moment] an inspiration for India as the seniors worked hard for this and their dreams came true with a gold medal," he added.&nbsp;</p>

With the 2024 Paralympic three years away Savita said, "I actually can`t wait to return to the camp in SAI (Sports Authority of India), Bengaluru. It has become a place of comfort for us. There has been lot of celebrations following the Olympics (India finished fourth) and now it`s time to get back to reality. Next year is crucial with the Asian Games and our priority will be to win gold so we automatically qualify for the Paris Olympics. We will resume training with that target in mind," she said.<br />

The team`s resilience to bounce back from a series of losses in the league stage to beat Ireland (1-0) and South Africa (4-3) changed the course of the Olympic Games for them. Making it to the quarterfinal was the team`s first priority and getting past the mighty Australians 1-0 in the first knockout game ensured the entire nation rallied behind them ahead of the semifinal clash against Argentina women.<br />

Looking back at the turn of events, Savita said, "Now that I have finally had some time to reflect on our performance, I do feel we achieved something outstanding, and the best part was the journey to get till here over the past five years. We have endured a lot as a team and as individuals faced tremendous odds to reach this level. I think we will always cherish this journey.<br />

"Though we lost very closely to Argentina in the semifinals, we wanted to give our everything against Great Britain (in the bronze-medal match) and we really wanted that medal around our necks and after beating Australia, we really believed this was achievable," added Savita, who has been nominated for the FIH Women`s Goalkeeper of the Year award. She has been nominated alongside Argentina`s Belen Succi and Great Britain`s Maddie Hinch.<br />

<p>"I think it was just the stress factor. It kind of built up over time, and my body and my mind just said no. But even I didn't know I was going through it until it just happened."</p>

<p>Biles was plagued by an attack of the "twisties" in Tokyo -- a potentially dangerous phenomenon that causes gymnasts to lose their sense of direction when in the air. She later returned to the Olympic arena to compete in the balance beam final, where she won a bronze.</p>

<p>Biles said while she was disappointed not to be able to deliver her usual gravity-defying form on the biggest stage of all -- she had no regrets about putting her health and safety first.</p>

<p>"It just sucks. Like, train five years, it doesn’t go the way you wanted," Biles said in the video. "But I know that I helped a lot of people and athletes speak out about mental health and saying no. Because I knew I couldn't go out there and compete. I knew I was going to get hurt."</p>

<p>Biles added she had been surprised by the broadly supportive reaction to her withdrawal from competition in Tokyo.</p>

<p>"I obviously was expecting to feel a lot of backlash and embarrassment," she said. "But it's the complete opposite. That's the first time I felt human. Besides Simone Biles, I was Simone, and people kind of respected that."</p>

<p>Schleu's trainer, Kim Raisner, was also seen hitting the horse, however, the coach was thrown out of the Tokyo Olympics for punching a horse during competition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But PETA writes that "fines and suspensions aren't enough" to protect other horses who might face similar consequences.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from Tokyo Games, PETA also noted two incidents in the equestrian eventing competition. In one Jet Set, a horse ridden by a Swiss competitor Robin Godel was injured so badly during a cross-country event that he had to be euthanized.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the other saw Irish rider Cian O'Connor force his mount Kilkenny to finish the course despite blood pouring from his nostrils.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter also included the inclusion of new sports at the Tokyo Games like skateboarding, surfing&nbsp;and sport climbing. The letter further added that&nbsp;it's "time to remove sports" that are no longer supported by the public.&nbsp;</p>
