Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday after Andros Townsend's equaliser cancelled out Anthony Martial's opener for the home side.

It was another disappointing result for United, following their home defeat to Aston Villa last week, but continued the impressive start that Everton have made under Rafael Benitez.

Both teams are on 14 points, together with leaders Liverpool who face Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responded to the challenge of the quick turn-around from Wednesday's Champions League win over Villarreal by starting Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho on the bench -- although all three were brought on in the second half.

United began brightly, with Martial heading wide at the back post and Edinson Cavani forcing Jordan Pickford into a diving save with a firm header from a nicely floated Fred cross.

Everton though were well-organised and set up to hit on the break, and the lively Demarai Gray brought David De Gea into action with a good effort after bursting in from the left in the 34th minute.

But it was a deserved lead that United took, two minutes before the interval when Mason Greenwood, showing some excellent touches on the flank, found Bruno Fernandes who expertly fed Martial, the Frenchman's slightly deflected shot flashing past Pickford.

Solskjaer made a double substitution in the 57th minute, bring on Ronaldo and Sancho for Martial and Cavani, but the switch did not have the desired effect of finishing the game off.

Instead, Everton hit United on the counter-attack -- breaking from a United corner with Gray outmuscling Fred on the left before finding the excellent Abdoulaye Doucoure who in turn slipped it outside to the sprinting Townsend, who fired low past the stationary De Gea.

The visitors looked to have grabbed a late winner when Tom Davies'&nbsp;low ball was turned in by Yerry Mina, but United were handed a reprieve by a VAR review that right judged the Colombian to be offside.

There was a late chance for United's Jadon Sancho, played in by a back-heel from substitute Ronaldo, but his soft shot was easily dealt with by Pickford.

One point out of six from their last two home matches is a poor return for a team hoping to be among the title challengers, as Fernandes acknowledged.

"We should win this game. We should create more chances. We should not concede that kind of goal. It`s not the first time and we have to look at our mistakes and see what we can do," said the Portuguese midfielder.

"We don't look at the league table at this moment but of course we should have more points. We drop points at home and we should not do that. These last two games at home was not good enough in the Premier League. If we want silverware at the end of the season we have to do much better," he added.

But for Everton, the result was an indicator that perhaps this season they may be able to sustain a push for a European place - especially when they can call upon currently injured forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

"We are doing well. We have some problems with injuries and still the team is working really hard and reacting really well," said Benitez.

"You can see the team spirit and the fans will appreciate that - and the players will appreciate the support of the fans," added the former Liverpool and Newcastle manager.

Three months later, Glazer's Premier League soccer team, Manchester United, had to call off their match against rivals Liverpool following violent protests against the American's ownership of the club.

The Florida-based Glazer family have owned United since 2005 and have faced fan opposition from the moment they completed their takeover but the leading role they played in the failed attempt to launch the European Super League last month has reignited the protests.

United were&nbsp;due to play traditional rivals, Liverpool, on Sunday but the game was called off by authorities due to safety concerns after protestors clashed with police and some invaded the field.

One group of supporters broke through security and into the stadium, which was closed to fans due to COVID-19 restrictions, protesting on the field and damaging some property inside the ground.

The late Malcolm Glazer, the family patriarch who made his fortune in real estate and stocks, bought United in May 2005 for 790 million pounds ($1.09 billion), after entering the sports business in 1995 with a takeover of the Buccaneers.

Since his death in 2014, his two sons Joel and Avram have been co-chairmen of United with the former playing a prominent part in the recent Super League controversy -- he was named the short-lived breakaway's founding vice-chairman.

That affair has relit the always smoldering protest movement amongst United fans and had now thrown the club into crisis.

Glazer has apologized for the club's involvement in the project, which would have seen 12 of the top clubs in Europe breakaway from the established structures to create a privately owned championship.

But United fans have not accepted the apology.

"Actions speak louder than words and he and his family have shown time and again that their sole motivation is personal profit at the expense of our&nbsp;football&nbsp;club," The Manchester United Supporters Trust said in a statement on Friday.

Former United captain Gary Neville, now a prominent television analyst, said on Sunday that Glazer's hope of "rebuilding trust" was a forlorn one.

GENERAL DISTRUST

"The Glazers say they want to rebuild the trust but they never had the trust of the supporters. I think (the protests are) a warning to the owners of the&nbsp;football&nbsp;club that ultimately they're not going to accept what they've done in the last couple of weeks," he said.

"This is a consequence of the Manchester United owners' actions two weeks ago. There is a general distrust and dislike of the owners, but they weren't protesting two or three weeks ago."

The initial hostility to the Glazers was focused on the nature of their takeover -- a leveraged deal in which United took on loans of 525 million pounds to finance the acquisition.

An effigy of Malcolm Glazer was burnt in the street during mass protests and there was even a new club, FC United of Manchester, created by fans in 2005.

But the retirement of the club's hugely successful manager Alex Ferguson, who won a record 13 Premier League championships and two European Champions League titles, led to another wave of opposition to the Glazers.

United have not won a Premier League title since Ferguson's departure in 2013, struggling to compete with local rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Many protests have focused on the Glazer-appointed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward who, while widely praised for the club's commercial success in striking global sponsorship deals, was blamed for a succession of poor player signings and coaching appointments.

Woodward tendered his resignation in the midst of the Super League fall-out but his departure has done nothing to calm the anger of hardcore United fans.

Neville agrees with the protesting fans that the Americans should now sell the club.

"My view is quite simply that they're going to make a fortune if they sell the club and if they were to put it up for sale now I think the time would be right, and it would be the honorable thing to do," he said.

But the Glazers have lasted 16 years in the face of hostility and there has been no indication they plan a quick sale.

United issued a statement on the protests on Sunday but did not address the question of their owners' future or provide any comment from Glazer.

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest," the club said.,

"However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger."

Manchester United's American owners facing strongest opposition yet

Manchester United's Premier League clash against Liverpool was postponed on Sunday after fans invaded the Old Trafford pitch as part of a protest against United's owners, the Glazer family.

Hundreds of fans managed to make their way into the ground, chanting "we want Glazers out."

Large numbers of supporters had also gathered outside the stadium and there were clashes with police as they moved in to disperse the crowd.

"Following discussion between the police, the Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today," United said in a statement.

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

"However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations."

The match had been due to start at 1630 local time (1530GMT), but had been delayed by over an hour before the decision to call the match off was confirmed.

"The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance," the Premier League said in a statement.

"We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches.&nbsp;

"Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification."

Manchester City could have been crowned Premier League champions on Sunday had United lost the match.

No rearranged date has yet been agreed for the fixture to be played.

"Liverpool Football Club was in full agreement with the decision to postpone today’s fixture as a result of ongoing events at Old Trafford and the surrounding area," Liverpool said in a statement.

"It is our position that public safety must be the number one factor in any such decision, with the ability to provide a secure environment for the participants, staff and officials being a particular priority.

"It was clearly not possible for this to be guaranteed today due to a situation which escalated rapidly."

Anger towards the Glazers has been reignited by United's part in a failed European Super League (ESL) project, that collapsed within 48 hours last month due to a backlash from fans, players, governments and governing bodies.

United and Liverpool were reportedly two of the leading drivers behind the project that sought to guarantee top level European football for 15 founder members every season without the need to qualify on the pitch.

In a rare public statement, United co-chairman Joel Glazer apologised to fans last month for signing up to the ESL.

"You made very clear your opposition to the European Super League, and we have listened. We got it wrong, and we want to show that we can put things right," he said.

United fans also breached security at their club's training ground in the days after the ESL proposals were made public to protest against the Glazers.

The Americans have owned United since a controversial leveraged takeover in 2005 saddled the club with hundreds of millions of pounds worth of debt.

As the English giants have paid off huge interest payments, the Glazers have still regularly drawn out millions in dividends from their shares.

"Earlier in the day, India captain Virat Kohli dismissed any question of pressure in playing arch-rivals Pakistan and said no game is more special or less regardless of the opposition and that the atmosphere in the dressing room has not changed.

Kohli indicated that depending on the weather and playing conditions there could be changes in the playing squad.

Addressing the pre-match press conference, Kohli said in a philosophical vein that the World Cup match against Pakistan will not last a lifetime as it starts and ends at a certain time and the 50-over tournament will still go on even if the result goes against the Indian team.

Relationship with the Pakistani players was good, he said and praised a couple of them.
