<p>Following the private dinner, both leaders are expected to hold a bilateral meeting to discuss a range of key geo-political developments.</p>

<p>Among the discussions to be held between both leaders are nuclear energy, defence, visas, consulates, and the Russia-Ukraine war.</p>

<p>“The White House expects to see meaningful progress on GE jet engines and civil nuclear technology in upcoming bilateral talks between US President Joe Biden and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Thursday.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, the aerospace unit of General Electric (GE) announced it had signed an agreement with India's state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics to jointly make engines in India to power fighter jets for the Indian Air Force.</p>

<p>According to the Times of India (TOI) newspaper, quoting&nbsp;sources, “a few days ago”&nbsp;the Indian defence ministry sent a detailed LoR (letter of request) to the US for the 31 ‘hunter-killer’ remotely-piloted aircraft systems, along with their weapons packages, mobile ground control systems and other equipment.</p>

<p>The US government is expected to respond with the LoA (letter of offer and acceptance), with the costing and the requisite notification to the US Congress under its foreign military sales (FMS) programme, “within a month or two”, the sources told TOI.</p>

<p>More than 400 reactors are operating around the world, 23 in India, none of them can cause an explosion of the kind that the nuclear weapons are designed to create, Dr Sethi points out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides, the manner in which the process of nuclear fission is deployed in nuclear weapons and nuclear energy is quite different.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When the nucleus of an atom is split, it is called nuclear fission. The process releases a massive amount of energy.</p>

<p>"The manner in which nuclear fission is exploited in nuclear weapons and nuclear energy is very different. &nbsp;The former aims for an uncontrolled fission reaction while the other undertakes controlled fission through the use of various techniques that ensure safety to the operator, public and environment," added Dr Sethi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, Senior Research Fellow at New Delhi-based Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, hopes that movies such as Oppenheimer will lead to more discussions on how green nuclear energy is given the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/shattered-climate-records-show-world-is-on-existential-brink-622713">scale of Climate Change crisis that has put world on the edge</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Nuclear energy is the highest amount of energy produced per gram of raw material consumed," Iyer-Mitra said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's just incredible that all these benefits of nuclear reactors simply never get through to people."</p>

<h2><strong>Discourse over nuclear disarmament, deterrence after Oppenheimer</strong></h2>

<p>Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer did not exactly show the scale of devastation caused by Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and its aftermath.</p>

<p>In contrast to what many cinephiles had expected, there was no vivid display of the scale of destruction and the loss of human life due to atomic weapons dropped on Japan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thereby it did not renew the fear of nuclear exchange in the minds of public, and discourse over nuclear disarmament remains least affected.</p>

<p>"The world is undergoing a geopolitical flux where scope for nuclear disarmament is only reducing further.<br />
This movie is unlikely to change that," said Saurabh Todi, an expert on Weapons of Mass Destruction and Research Analyst at Bengaluru-based Takshashila Institution. &nbsp;<br />

Experts also note that there has been ample evidence to suggest that nuclear deterrence works 'really well'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There has never been a weapon like the nuclear weapon which after its invention has not been used after its first and the second usage," noted Iyer-Mitra.</p>

<p>"It's a technology of the 1940s. It's not such a great miracle to master (its use). It's very tough to get a hold of. But once it is gotten hold of, it kind of forces a sense of responsibility on those countries," he added.</p>

<p>Over 12 years after Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant accident after a devastating tsunami, a fish caught near drainage outlets at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was discovered to contain radioactive caesium levels 180 times above the safety limits.</p>

<p>The black rockfish, caught on 18 May, was found to have 18,000 becquerels per kilogram of caesium-137, surpassing the legal maximum level of 100 becquerels per kg.</p>

<p>The rockfish was caught in an area where rainwater from the regions around reactors one, two, and three, which experienced meltdowns during the March 2011 disaster, flows into the inner breakwater. The sediment in the inner breakwater's seabed has a caesium concentration of over 100,000 becquerels per kg.</p>

<p>Amid this latest discovery of lethal radioactivity, the prospect of Japan releasing 1.3 million tonnes of treated water from the Fukushima plant has raised concerns in the region and has worried the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).</p>

Nuclear power phase-out: Germany switches off remaining three reactors permanently

<p>Britain has created a fund of a whooping $90 million intending to assist the domestic production of nuclear fuel for power plants. However, another added objective of the fund is to avoid dependency on Russian uranium supplies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The British authorities confirmed the fund's establishment on Monday after its announcement in July. They discussed how the fund aims to grant uranium conversion enterprises. It will remain open from Monday until February 20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Uranium conversion is the most crucial process in manufacturing nuclear fuel. Currently, Russia holds 20 per cent of the world's total uranium capacity.</p>

However, another added objective of the fund is to avoid dependency on Russian uranium supplies. The British authorities confirmed the fund's establishment on Monday after its announcement in July. They discussed how the fund aims to grant uranium conversion enterprises. It will remain open from Monday until February 20. Uranium conversion is the most crucial process in manufacturing nuclear fuel. Currently, Russia holds 20 per cent of the world's total uranium capacity. Springfields nuclear fuel, a manufacturing site in northwest England, has already won $15.7 million from the fund, said the government officials. Around 45% of the present generation in Britain used energy fuel in 2021. In November, British authorities revealed their plans to hold 50 per cent shareholders in Sizewell C, a nuclear project giving 700 million pounds in funding to the plant for southeast England.
