Northern Ireland saw three decades of sectarian conflict over British rule, known as "The Troubles", that claimed some 3,500 lives.&nbsp;But the province stands transformed since the Good Friday Agreement was adopted on April 10, 1998.

"However, a small number of people remain determined to cause harm to our communities through acts of politically motivated violence," Northern Ireland Secretary Heaton-Harris told parliament earlier.

He urged the public to "remain vigilant, but not be alarmed" at the announcement.

Raising the terror threat level follows a police officer being shot and seriously wounded in front of his son last month, while November saw a failed bomb attack on two officers.

Both attacks have been blamed on a dissident militant group called the "New IRA", which wants reunification with the Republic of Ireland.

The threat level was lowered to "substantial" a year ago -– the first change since 2010.

The threat level has been increased by the intelligence agency in the aftermath of the Omagh police shooting when a senior police officer John Caldwell was shot by masked gunmen in County Tyrone. UK-based media reports have claimed that the detective chief inspector is in hospital and is believed to be in a critical but stable condition.&nbsp;

Heaton-Harris said in the statement: "In recent months, we have seen an increase in levels of activity relating to Northern Ireland-related terrorism, which has targeted police officers serving their communities and also put at risk the lives of children and other members of the public."&nbsp;

According to a statement released by Sunak's Downing Street office late on Sunday, the two leaders are expected "to meet late lunchtime Monday for final talks" in Berkshire, a county west of London.

All eyes will be on Sunak to clinch a new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland, amidst strong criticism from pro-UK unionists in Northern Ireland and hardline Brexiteers in his own Tory party ranks.

What is Northern Ireland Protocol?

The protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, commonly referred to as the Northern Ireland Protocol, is part of the Brexit agreement that ensures that a hard border is avoided in Ireland after the UK formally left the EU on 31 January 2020.

Supporters believe that the deal offers Northern Ireland the best of both worlds, as it can not only remain in the EU's single market, but can also have access to the UK market.

Under the protocol, Northern Ireland followed some EU laws so that goods flow freely over the Ireland border without checks. And instead, goods coming from England, Scotland and Wales are checked when they arrive at the Northern Irish ports.

The EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods, such as milk and eggs, arrive from non-EU countries.

But Britain wants to change the current agreement as it fears that cameras or border posts, as part of these checks, could lead to instability.

The UK and the EU had signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement in order to protect the Northern Ireland peace deal —also known as the Good Friday agreement —that ended the 30 years of political instability and allowed both nationalists and unionists to run the country.

How does the protocol work?

Under the protocol, inspections and document checks would be conducted between Great Britain—England, Scotland and Wales—and Northern Ireland. These take place at Northern Ireland's ports.

What changes does UK propose for the protocol?

Britain never fully implemented the protocol, saying that Northern Ireland could not afford such unnecessary checks as it would lead to more red tape apart from the economic costs of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UK government wants different rules for goods coming from Great Britain to Northern Ireland and goods which then cross the border into the Republic of Ireland.

It has proposed two lanes—a red lane for the products destined for the Republic of Ireland and the rest of the EU. These would undergo full checks and customs controls.

And a green lane for the trusted traders transporting goods to Northern Ireland only. These would be exempt from checks and customs controls.

Paving the way for a such a scheme, London agreed in January to share UK data with Brussels on the flow of goods.

The UK also wants changes to tax rules. The industry in Northern Ireland follows EU rules on state sops and the sales tax, VAT. It means that the government payments to help firms in Northern Ireland and tax breaks must be within limits set by the EU, reports BBC.

The UK government wants these limits to be removed. Moreover, it also wants an independent body to settle disputes over the Northern Ireland Protocol, rather than the European Court of Justice.

Who opposes the protocol?

Unionist parties want Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK. They say that the current checks undermine Northern Ireland's place within the UK.

The&nbsp;Democratic Unionist Party&nbsp;(DUP)—the largest unionist party—has refused to participate in Northern Ireland's power-sharing government unless its concerns are resolved.

The party has prevented a Northern Ireland devolved government from forming, leaving it in a political gridlock.

What is the EU saying?

The European Commission on June 15 last year started legal action against the UK for not adhering to the protocol, and called on the government to return to negotiations.

The EU has opposed renegotiating the protocol, but has offered to work on how the rules apply, including:

	<li>reducing customs and checks on goods,</li>
	<li>reducing the amount of paperwork,</li>
	<li>relaxing rules so chilled meats can still be sent across the Irish Sea.</li>
</ul>

But In January 2023, the two sides reached an agreement on sharing data on trade.&nbsp;This will allow the EU to access the UK's IT systems for detailed information about goods flowing from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.

What will happen on Monday?

In Berkshire, Sunak and von der Leyen will meet late at lunchtime for final talks. A cabinet meeting will then follow in the afternoon, where updates on those talks will be given, according to BBC.

If a final deal is agreed upon, the prime minister and Leyen will hold a short joint press conference in the late afternoon.

The prime minister would then give a House of Commons statement on the agreement.

The shooters continued to fire while the now injured police officer was lying on the ground to save himself, according to McEwan. In a packed parking lot, where parents and kids fled for safety, the shooters also opened fire on at least two more vehicles, he said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, just outside Omagh, the suspects' burned-out vehicle was subsequently discovered.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday (December 15) made his first trip to Northern Ireland since taking office. He met with leaders of the main political parties.

The talks were expected to focus on a dispute over post-Brexit trade rules governing the region, which has blocked a normalisation of relations between Britain and the European Union and plunged local politics into crisis.

After a prolonged Status Quo, Britain and the European Union resumed talks in October.

The EU has said it is "very confident" a positive conclusion is within reach if Britain shows the political will.

Any agreement will have to overcome opposition from within Sunak's own Conservative Party and the Democratic Unionist Party, largest pro-British party in the Northern Ireland.

Sunak's office posted a picture of him posing after the talks with the leaders of the five main parties, including the DUP and Irish nationalists Sinn Fein.

The DUP in February withdrew from Northern Ireland's power-sharing government, a key part of a 1998 peace deal, in protest at the trade checks. Neither the power-sharing government or the Stormont Assembly can function without the DUP's support.

Sunak's meetings follow a roundtable with party leaders hosted by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland earlier in the day to discuss solutions to the return of power-sharing government in the region.

The DUP in February withdrew from Northern Ireland's power-sharing government, a key part of a 1998 peace deal, in protest at the trade checks. Neither the power-sharing government or the Stormont Assembly can function without the DUP's support. Sunak's meetings follow a roundtable with party leaders hosted by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland earlier in the day to discuss solutions to the return of power-sharing government in the region. "Joining the EU has unleashed Ireland's&nbsp;immense potential and has profoundly transformed this country," Ursula von der Leyen said. The EC president further expressed her confidence in reaching a positive conclusion over Northern Ireland's post-Brexit trade issue if Britain is willing to reach a solution.&nbsp;

She had encouraging talks with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and added that a workable solution appeared to be within reach.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, two cities in the United Kingdom, Leicester and Birmingham became the first to be labelled as “minority majorities”. Nearly&nbsp;60 per cent of people in Leicester and 51.4 per cent of Birmingham residents are from ethnic minorities, the census data showed.

Notably, the people were asked what their religion was rather than about their religious practices or beliefs, a question which is optional since 2001. The number of people who identified as Christians were down from 59.3 per cent in 2011 to 46.6 per cent in 2021. On the other hand, people who said they do not have a religion grew from 25 per cent a decade ago to 37 per cent, last year.&nbsp;

Notably, England is legally a Christian country with the aforementioned religious institute as the established church and the Monarchy as its nominal head.&nbsp;

This grants the Church of England the power which secularists and others now want an end. Some of the mandates include King Charles making an oath to preserve the church, guaranteeing Church of England bishops and archbishops over 20 seats in the Parliament, and state schools required to hold Christian worship.&nbsp;

While some of the most common ethnic groups included Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh, accounting for a little over 9.3 per cent of the population. Overall nearly 75 per cent of the total population identified as white as well as English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British.&nbsp;

"Three men, aged 36, 36 and 28, have been arrested under the Terrorism Act."

Assistant chief constable Bobby Singleton, of the PSNI said that the officers were on a routine patrolling duty when they saw a flash and heard a loud bang. The officers were not injured. But their vehicles received some blast damage.

Officers discovered what could be a command wire for the improvised device during follow-up searches.

The incident is being blamed on the New IRA.

The explosion has drawn criticism from the government as well as Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA. B

Irish prime minister Micheal Martin said "any such attempt to injure members of the security forces or the PSNI would be absolutely shocking and stands to be condemned".

Even if the future is uncertain, Khabibullin said his faith will remain constant. "It's impossible to predict, to think about returning or not because it is unknown what's going to happen with Ukraine when the war will be over," he said, as reported by AFP.

On Monday, the British government introduced legislation to rip up post-Brexit trading rules for Northern Ireland, in an attempt to override the EU withdrawal treaty that it had signed.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government insists it is not breaking international law, citing a "necessity" to act to restore Northern Ireland's power-sharing institutions.

"We are proceeding a step further with an infringement process we launched in March 2021 regarding for instance the movement of agri-food. If the UK doesn't reply within two months, we may take them to the Court of Justice," he warned.

Northern Irish singer and songwriter Van Morrison has started legal proceedings against the Northern Ireland Department of Health and its minister, Robin Swann, over an opinion piece the latter wrote for Rolling Stone magazine. Swann had blasted the singer’s standpoint on COVID19 restrictions and lockdowns.&nbsp;

Calling Morrison’s songs relating to Covid "dangerous," Minister Robin Swann criticised Morrison and said his anti-lockdown views could harm public health messages in Northern Ireland.&nbsp;

Morrison, in September 2020, released three songs, including ‘No More Lockdown’, ‘Born to Be Free', and ‘As I Walked Out’. One of the song’s lyrics accused scientists of "making up crooked facts."

Swann, in the opinion piece, said he feels disappointed in Morrison, whom he acknowledged as a "music legend."

Morrison has now taken legal action against the Department of Health and Swann. The singer's solicitors have denied giving details about&nbsp;the lawsuit, while the Northern health department has declined to comment.&nbsp;

Johnson, who is heading to Northern Ireland on Monday, said he wants to resolve the standoff about its post-Brexit trade rules.

The Belfast Telegraph newspaper quoted Johnson as saying "There is without question a sensible landing spot in which everyone's interests are protected."

He told Sky News television that Ireland and the EU can find solutions "but sabre-rattling and grand-standing in Westminster, ratcheting up the tension, is not the way to do it."
