A school bus carrying more than 60 passengers&nbsp;crashed in Carrowdore, near Newtownards, Northern Ireland on Monday (Oct 7). The&nbsp;Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said it was dealing with a "major incident" as the rescue operation was underway.&nbsp;

According to local reports, the bus was transporting the kids from Strangford College to Newtownards around 3:45 pm local time when the accident took place.&nbsp;

A BBC report added that&nbsp;over 50 had sustained minor injuries while eight were being treated for more significant injuries as the double-decker bus crashed.&nbsp;

NIAS said five fire appliances and the specialist rescue team were&nbsp;currently at the scene. The children were reportedly pulled out through windows of the vehicle that had tipped over into a nearby field.

“It’s every parent's worst nightmare.&nbsp;A child’s journey to and from school always causes worry, and this is just horrendous," local councillor Robert Adair said.&nbsp;

"I am asking everyone to pray at the current time while emergency services deal with this clearly very serious situation," Adair added, informing that he had spoken to a number of parents and the police.&nbsp;

Peter Wray, an Ulster Unionist party councillor, said the incident did not involve any other vehicle.&nbsp;

“I think there was also some buses that were potentially behind, so some pupils will have seen this. As well as the people directly [affected], it could also cause some stress for other pupils or other people who have seen this incident and have been distressed by it," said Wray.&nbsp;

In a public message,&nbsp;NIAS urged the citizens to only call it in case of emergencies as the resources had been directed to the crash site.&nbsp;

"NIAS is currently dealing with a major incident at Carrowdore involving a bus with up to 70 passengers. NIAS has dispatched multiple resources to the scene. Please only call 999 if your situation is life-threatening while we deal with this incident," it said on Facebook.&nbsp;

Ireland has sought to return asylum seekers to the United Kingdom in a bid to stem arrivals through Northern Ireland, reported the British and Irish media&nbsp;on Sunday (Apr 28), amid concerns that Britain’s Rwanda plan would lead to more asylum seekers from the UK.

The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Simon Harris has asked the country’s justice minister, Helen McEntee, to introduce legislation to the cabinet which would allow Dublin to return inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK.

The move comes amid concerns that UK PM Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda plan would lead more asylum seekers to enter Ireland through the land border with Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for Harris said that he wanted to protect the integrity of Ireland’s system and in line with this, the Irish PM had asked the justice minister to bring proposals regarding the designation of safe third countries and allowing the return of inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK.

She added, “That’s why I’m introducing fast processing…I’ll have emergency legislation at cabinet this week to make sure that we can effectively return people to the UK.”

McEntee also said she would&nbsp;meet with British Home Secretary James Cleverly and other officials during a visit to London, on Monday (Apr 29), to raise these issues.&nbsp;

<h2>UK’s Rwanda policy</h2>

Ireland’s Tánaiste (deputy PM) Micheál Martin noted how the UK’s Rwanda policy was already impacting Ireland, saying that people were “fearful” of staying in the UK and were crossing the border to the Republic so they would not be sent to the East African country.

Notably, the deputy PM, who also serves as the country’s foreign minister, has previously criticised the UK’s Rwanda policy which became law, on Thursday (Apr 25).

In an interview with Sky News, on Sunday, Sunak defended the controversial Rwanda legislation and noted that it is working as people were worried about coming to the UK.

“The deterrent is - according to your comment - already having an impact, because people are worried about coming here and that demonstrates exactly what I’m saying: if people come to our country illegally, but know that they won’t be able to stay, they’re much less likely to come,” said Sunak.&nbsp;

Nearly two months after the Northern Ireland's government resumed post a 24-month lull and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) concerns regarding post-Brexit trade arrangements, the party's leader&nbsp;Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has been suspended from his position after being charged with sexual offences.&nbsp;

Days after a major data breach was reported, Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) chief&nbsp;Simon Byrne said that sensitive information had fallen into the hands of&nbsp;dissident Republicans&nbsp;who could misuse it to settle scores.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We must do all we can to frustrate and prevent attacks on our colleagues and their families.&nbsp;That means varying the routes we take to and from work, changing routines and re-assessing our personal security both on and off duty," said Kelly.&nbsp;

<h2>Workers fear for their security</h2>

The leak has incensed those involved with the police and others coming from nationalist backgrounds as the enemies could use the information to come after them and their families.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“For 18 years, I’ve relied on my family to help me protect my identity. I’ve denied myself a social life and gave up sports I loved. I can’t stay in touch with old friends on social media as I need to avoid the footprint. Now, this is all taken away at the click of a button," one of the nationalists was quoted as saying by The Guardian.&nbsp;

Over 3,00 officers have gotten in touch with the police federation regarding a potential legal case for damages. Lawyers have estimated that the eventual bill may come to around tens of millions of pounds.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden has drawn criticism from a lawmaker of Northern Ireland's biggest pro-UK party on Thursday (May 11) over his contentious remarks. Biden has said that the purpose of his trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland was "to make sure... the Brits didn't screw around" with peace in Northern Ireland and "didn't walk away from their commitments".

The comments, relayed in a White House transcript, came as Biden addressed a Democratic party gathering in New York on Wednesday.&nbsp;

"If you believe that there should be a special relationship between the US and UK then at least show us some respect," said Sammy Wilson, Northern Irish lawmaker from the country's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He was quoted by London's Evening Standard newspaper.

"It's unbelievable and frightening as well to think this is the man who is the leader of the free world," he added.

The DUP is a pro-UK party and wants Northern Ireland part of the UK. It is currently boycotting the region's power-sharing government over strong disagreements on post-Brexit trade.

A renegotiation of the trade protocol by the EU and UK -- labelled the Windsor Framework -- was largely aimed at remedying unionist concerns that it put Northern Ireland's position in the UK under threat.&nbsp;But the deal has so far been spurned by the DUP.

UK PM Rishi Sunak's spokesperson, when asked about Biden's remarks, said that the framework is "a culmination of substantive work between the UK and the EU".

"And at its heart the UK priority was always protecting the Good Friday Agreement," he told reporters.&nbsp;

Under Sunak's predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, the UK's hardline tactics with the EU had drawn warnings from Washington that peace in Northern Ireland could be undermined.

Biden's words found backing from Mary Lou McDonald, president of the Sinn Fein party which wants Irish reunification.

The US position has consistently been "to oppose very vigorously anything that would threaten to undermine either the peace or the Good Friday Agreement", she said.

"So I think President Biden in his own way is simply reiterating a position which has been very clear for a long time."

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak greeted the US president at Belfast international airport on Tuesday night. The visit is likely to include economic announcements and events related to Biden’s Irish and Catholic heritage.

While addressing reporters before taking off in Air Force One, Biden said that he wished to safeguard the Good Friday agreement, which the two countries had signed 25 years ago this week, and extend support to Sunak’s post-Brexit deal for Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland secretary Chris Heaton-Harris and the King’s personal representative for County Antrim, Lord-Lieutenant David McCorkell were also part of the welcoming party.

Biden and Sunak met briefly before the US president was driven away in an armoured car amid a light snowfall.

The US entourage, which included US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and newly-appointed economic envoy to Northern Ireland, Joseph Kennedy III, was preceded by heavy security on both sides of the border.

The streets of central Belfast were sealed by dozens of US secret service and police vehicles on Tuesday. Security officials lifted and checked manhole covers and&nbsp;hotel rooms were inspected by sniffer dogs as part of the £7 million security operation – in which 300 extra police personnel from the British mainland were also engaged.

Four suspected pipe bombs were recovered by the police from a cemetery in Derry where an Easter Monday commemoration was staged by the Republicans that led to petrol bomb attacks on police.

Police Service of Northern Ireland assistant chief constable Bobby Singleton said that the discovery of pipe bombs was a “sinister and worrying development”.

The Police Federation for Northern Ireland stated that this was a clear indication of intent to harm police officers. Biden and Sunak will again hold talks on Wednesday after which the US president will give a speech at Ulster University in Belfast, which is his only public engagement in Northern Ireland before he heads south for three days of pilgrimage in Ireland.

On Tuesday, Downing Street denied a report published by the New York Times that the White House had scaled back the meeting of Biden with Sunak from a bilateral event to a low-key meeting. “I wouldn’t characterise it as that. We continue to have an incredibly positive working relationships with the president and the US government,” a spokesperson said.

Biden, who is known for his pro-Irish views, will have to carefully tread as the devolved power-sharing government, which was an important part of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, is still being boycotted by the largest pro-British unionist party.

During his visit, Biden is likely to meet five main Northern Irish parties' representatives on Wednesday before delivering his speech at Belfast's Ulster University. However, the US president does not plan to pressurise the representatives, said a senior administration official.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Northern Ireland has stated that the visit of Biden, which will be the first visit of a US president in the last 10 years, will not be able to pressurise them to end their protests against the post-Brexit trade rules that they believe are treating the province differently in comparison to the rest of the United Kingdom.

In a recent deal, which was endorsed by Biden, the European Union and the UK had agreed to ease the trade barriers. The DUP has been demanding more changes in the deal, however, the UK government has said that it is not possible.

During the Brexit talks, Biden had clashed with the UK government multiple times drawing a rebuke from DUP lawmakers. Biden, who will be welcomed by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on his arrival ahead of the talks between the two leaders on Wednesday, will hint at the possibility of closer investment ties between Northern Ireland and the US and will encourage an end to the impasse.
