North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong denounced the United Nations Security Council meeting on the country’s recent satellite launch upon “robbery demands” from the United States, reported the state media KCNA, on Sunday (June 4). She also dubbed the meeting “most unfair” while rejecting sanctions and vowed to take “self-defensive” action.

‘Very offended’ over the UNSC meeting: Kim’s sister

The North Korean leader’s sister, as per the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that the UN meeting last week was yet another reminder that the council is acting as a “political appendage” to the “gangster-like” Washington. She also went on to say that the UNSC by accepting US’ “robbery demands” is ignoring North Korea’s right to space development.

“I am very offended that the UNSC routinely criticises our exercise of sovereign rights as the United States wants, and strongly condemn and reject this as the most unfair, prejudiced act of interfering in internal affairs and infringing our sovereignty,” said Kim Yo Jong, as quoted KCNA.

She also called North Korea’s satellite launch a “legitimate, self-defensive countermeasure” amid threats from the US and its allies. Pyongyang had also accused Washington of raising tensions in the region with their recent annual military drills.

The North Korean leader’s sister also vowed to continue launching spy satellites which the country has called necessary to counter Washington’s growing US military presence in the region.

“The DPRK will continue to take proactive measures to exercise all the lawful rights of a sovereign state, including the one to military reconnaissance satellite launch,” said Kim Yo Jong, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Additionally, she said Pyongyang will never acknowledge sanctions resolutions by the UN, “even if they slap them hundred, thousand times.”

What happened at the meeting?

The UNSC meeting over North Korea’s failed launch of its spy satellite was called by the US last week. The launch has since been slammed by the US, South Korea and Japan who said it violated UN resolutions barring the nuclear-armed country from any tests using ballistic missile technology.

This led the UN’s under-secretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo on Friday to take the UNSC to task over the “lack of unity and action” on North Korea’s tests. Meanwhile, analysts have warned that if Pyongyang succeeds in its satellite deployment, the surveillance capabilities would allow North Korea to target the US and its ally South Korea more accurately.

On May 31, North Korea launched its Chollima-1 rocket which minutes later lost thrust and crashed into the sea with its satellite payload. Subsequently, in a rare announcement on the same day, Pyongyang said that it would conduct another test as soon as possible.

‘Very offended’: North Korean leader’s sister slams UN meeting on spy satellite launch

Defence leaders from around the world attend the Shangri-La Dialogue, which traditionally focuses on major security issues. This year in Singapore, the topic of North Korea and its lack of missile testing is in the spotlight. The defence minister of South Korea claimed that some nations ignored North Korea's illegal behaviour, which he claimed threatened to undercut U.N. sanctions against the country's missile and nuclear programmes.

China along with Russia ignored a US call on Friday (June 2) to condemn North Korea in United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for its attempt to launch a satellite. Both countries instead blamed Washington for raising tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

From the side of the US, a diplomat from its UN mission Robert Wood made the appeal at the meeting called by the US and the allies. The meeting was called specifically to discuss the North Korea issue.

War of words

"We call on all council members to uphold the credibility of the council, join us in condemning this unlawful behavior and urge the DPRK to not follow through on its stated plan to conduct another launch that will further pose a threat to international peace and security," Wood said.

UNSC: China, Russia join forces to ignore US call to condemn North Korea

The spokesperson for the United States UN mission said on Thursday (June 1) that the US has called for a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Friday (June 2) over North Korea's attempted satellite launch this week. Wednesday's attempt from North Korea was its latest to put its first spy satellite into space. However, the attempt was a failure. The booster and the payload crashed into the sea.

The launch was condemned by the US, saying that ballistic missile technology was used which in itself was a violation of multiple UNSC resolutions. The US also said that the attempted launch risked destabilising the security situation in the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong on Thursday (June 1) promised more spy satellite launches, a day after Pyongyang launched one such satellite that crashed because of a rocket failure. In a statement carried by the KCNA, Yo Jong said it is certain that the military reconnaissance satellite will be correctly put into space orbit shortly and start its mission. KCNA reported that the Chollima-1 rocket, carrying a military reconnaissance satellite known as "Malligyong-1", crashed into the sea. The state media also published on Thursday photographs of what is said was the new rocket lifting off from a coastal launch pad. The white-and-grey rocket had a bulbous nose, apparently for carrying a satellite or other cargo. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Ankit Panda from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said the photographs confirmed that the rocket was a new design. "The launch used the new coastal launch pad they've built at Tongchang-ri, so we might see a larger space launch vehicle use the traditional gantry that has seen some work recently," Panda said. Following Wednesday's launch, US-based monitors reported that commercial satellite imagery showed significant activity at the main pad. North Korea has launched a rocket shortly after it announced it was planning to send its first satellite into space. However, Tokyo claims it is a ballistic missile. The US condemned North Korea's launch saying that it raises tensions. However, North Korean officials on Wednesday said the launch ended in failure after the rocket's second stage malfunctioned. Pyongyang reported that the new "chollima-1" satellite launch rocket failed due to in-stability in the engine and fuel system. It said there was abnormal start of the two stage engine after stage one separation.

North Korea's attempt to put its first spy satellite into space failed Wednesday in a setback to leader Kim Jong Un's push to boost his military capabilities as tensions with the United States and South Korea rise.

North Korea's spy satellite mission fails as rocket plunges into sea

North Korea state media said on Wednesday that a military spy satellite was launched but it failed and crashed into the sea.

"The launched new satellite transport rocket 'Cheollima-1' crashed into the West Sea of Korea as it lost momentum due to abnormal start-up of the two-stage engine after one step separation while flying normally," the Korean Central News Agency reported.

Pyongyang’s failure to put the country’s first spy satellite into orbit is being viewed as an embarrassment for its leader Kim Jong Un who has been pushing for a boost of North Korea’s military capability amid the security tensions with the United States and South Korea.

It was the nuclear-armed state's sixth satellite launch attempt, and the first since 2016 and would have been North Korea’s first spy satellite in orbit.

North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) will investigate the "serious defects" and take action to overcome them before conducting a second launch as soon as possible, KCNA said.

The launch of the satellite, meanwhile, caused panic and a flurry of activity in South Korean capital Seoul as air raid sirens blared and city authorities asked citizens to be prepared for evacuation before saying that the evacuation order was 'incorrectly issued'.

The text alert that was initially sent read, "Citizens, please prepare to evacuate and allow children and the elderly to evacuate first."

Missile alert warning system activated in Japan

Japan activated its missile alert warning system for the southern region of Okinawa soon after the North Korean launch.

"Missile launch. Missile launch. North Korea appears to have launched a missile. Please take shelters inside buildings or underground," said the alert tweeted by the prime minister’s office and carried on national broadcaster NHK.

The official English language Twitter handle of Japan PMO said in its tweets that a 'suspected ballistic missile' has been fired by North Korea and that 'it will possibly land in the area around Okinawa'.

But around 30 minutes later, the government tweeted that the alert was being cancelled.

"It is expected that the missile reported earlier will not come to Japan. The call for evacuation is lifted," it said.

News agency Yonhap quoted South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff assaying that the projectile flew over the Yellow Sea and didn't affect the Seoul metropolitan area.

Officials from the United States, Japan, South Korea held a phone call and “strongly condemned" the launch, Japan’s foreign ministry said.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the military was conducting operation to recover parts of the space launch vehicle. The military shared pictures of debris pulled from the water.

North Korea had earlier given indications that it intends to launch a spy satellite. On Tuesday, North Korea said that the satellite would be "indispensable to tracking, monitoring... and coping with in advance in real time the dangerous military acts of the US and its vassal forces".

The North had criticised US-South Korea joint military exercises, including the one going on right now. According to North Korean state media, one of country's top military officials said that Pyongyang felt "the need to expand reconnaissance and information means and improve various defensive and offensive weapons."

However, since long-range rockets and space launchers share the same technology, analysts say developing the ability to put a satellite in orbit would provide Pyongyang with cover for testing banned intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

In 2012 and 2016, Pyongyang tested ballistic missiles that it called satellite launches. Both flew over Japan's southern Okinawa region.

"At around 08:05 today, our military identified an object presumed to be part of North Korea's claimed 'Space Launch Vehicle' in waters 200km (124 miles) west of Eocheong Island and is salvaging it," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, the news agency AFP reported. The military also released images of a part of the spy satellite. The images showed a large-barrel-like metal structure with some thin pipes and wires at the bottom, which the military said it salvaged in waters 200 kilometres west of Eocheong Island. The new "Chollima-1" satellite launch rocket failed because of instability in the engine and fuel system, according to the state news agency KCNA. This flight was North Korea's sixth satellite launch attempt and the first since 2016. Panic in Seoul after spy satellite launch Air raid sirens and mobile phone alerts calling for evacuations caused panic among residents of South Korea's capital city of Seoul after North Korea launched its spy satellite. The sirens started at 6.32 am (2132 GMT Tuesday) as the city issued a "Presidential Alert" asking citizens to prepare for a potential evacuation, the news agency Reuters reported. Shortly after, a second mobile alert came calling for evacuation which remained in place for at least 10 minutes until the administration said it had been sent in error. Speaking to Reuters, Seoul resident Lee Juyeon said, "I was so panicked. Nine-one-one lines were busy and the internet was slow." Juyeon, who has a nine-month-old child, also said, "So without knowing what was really happening, I was about to head down to a basement wearing a wrap carrier with my baby." Though residents are used to living in the shadow of threats from North Korea, an element of complacency has crept in among many in the city about the risks and how to respond. ALSO READ | Explained: When world was battling pandemic, why North Korea was busy sealing borders with China and Russia Reuters reported that some office workers in Seoul's central district said they had considered during their commute how to respond to the alarm, such as by withdrawing cash or hoarding water. "I understand it was a mistake, but even if it has to be simple, that alert message should have said what went on and where to go," Kim Jong-hyun, 48, said on his way to work after dropping off his child at school. On Wednesday morning, "alerts" and "evacuation" were the most trending topics on Twitter in South Korea. N. Korea launch violates UN resolutions: Japan Japan, which briefly activated its missile alert warning system for the Okinawa region after Pyongyang's military spy satellite launch, that such a launch by North Korea violated the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. "We cannot tolerate this kind of launch whether it is a satellite or anything else, as it violates UN resolutions," Japan's Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada told reporters. Earlier, the Prime Minister's office tweeted, "Missile launch. Missile launch. North Korea appears to have launched a missile. Please take shelter inside buildings or underground." But half an hour later, the government tweeted that the alert was being cancelled. "It is expected that the missile reported earlier will not come to Japan. The call for evacuation is lifted," it said. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. South Korea ‘salvaging debris’ of crashed North Korean military spy satellite

North Korea on Tuesday confirmed that it will launch a spy satellite by June 1. The country has said that the reconnaissance satellite is needed to monitor the military movements of the US and its allies in real-time.

The launch has spurred concerns from Seoul, Tokyo and Washington, which assert that this move by the country would transgress UN sanctions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has made designing such a satellite the top military priority for his government. He has personally examined it, approving its future launch.

The North's state Korean Central News Agency cited Ri Pyong Chol, vice-chairman of the ruling party's central military commission, as saying the "military reconnaissance satellite No. 1" would be "launched in June".

The statement said that the satellite, along with "various reconnaissance means due to be newly tested, are indispensable to tracking, monitoring... and coping with in advance in real time the dangerous military acts of the US and its vassal forces."

North Korea informs Japan of its plan to launch satellite

North Korea, on Monday, informed Japan of its plan to launch what it calls a 'satellite' between May 31 and June 11, said a Japanese coast guard official.

As per the Japanese officials, the launch is set to involve a ballistic projectile, according to a tweet from the prime minister's office, that alludes to a "ballistic missile that it (Pyongyang) describes as a satellite."

Analysts believe that North Korea is launching its military 'satellite' in an attempt to improve its surveillance technology and advance its ability to strike targets whenever a conflict occurs.

In a tweet, the Japanese prime minister's office said that PM Fumio Kishida has issued instructions "on North Korea's notification about the launch of a ballistic missile that it describes as a satellite".

He further urged North Korea to abstain and said he would work closely with allies.

"We strongly urge North Korea to refrain from launching," the prime minister's office said on Twitter, adding it would cooperate "with relevant countries such as the US and South Korea".

Japan puts missile defences on alert

After North Korea notified Japan of its plan to launch the satellite, it put its ballistic missile defences on alert and also vowed to knock down any missile that threatens its territory.

"We will take destructive measures against ballistic and other missiles that are confirmed to land in our territory," Japan's defence ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that the soldiers would be authorised to use Standard Missile SM-3 and Patriot Missile PAC-3 to destroy the missile in mid-air.

"Even if it's described as a satellite, a launch using ballistic missile technology would be a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and a serious problem that threatens the safety of people," PM Kishida told reporters.

South Korea, US 'closely monitoring' situation

On Tuesday, South Korea's military released a statement saying that it was closely working with US intelligence authorities for “a possible provocation” from North Korea’s satellite launch.

North Korea will launch its first military reconnaissance satellite in June to monitor US military activities, its state media reported on Tuesday.

“South Korea and the US intelligence authorities are closely monitoring related movements in close cooperation and monitoring a possible provocation of the so-called satellites claimed by North Korea,” said South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), Han Sung-Keun, during a regular news briefing at the defence ministry.

Launch to be a crucial element in advancing the country's nuclear programme: Analysts

According to analysts, North Korea's first spy satellite, which it announced it will launch in June, will be a critical component in expanding the country's nuclear programme.

“If there is no military reconnaissance satellite, it is like operating a missile without sight. It (the satellite launch) is very essential and very important to operate nuclear missiles," Reuters quoted Hong Min, a senior fellow at the South's Korea Institute for National Unification, as saying.

"(North Korea) is expected to participate in Hangzhou Asian Games hosted by China in September, so they are trying to strengthen nuclear forces in their own ways until the first half of the year," Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies said on the timing of the launch.

North Korea banned from using ballistic projectile technology by UN sanctions

A barge of UN sanctions has banned North Korea from using any projectile technology, which also includes Kim Jong Un's administration to "not conduct any further nuclear test or any launch using ballistic missile technology".

Pyongyang, which regularly defies these regulations describing them as a breach of its liberation, has test-fired multiple intercontinental ballistic projectiles already this year.

Though the country never gives an advance warning of its missile tests, as per experts, since the country considers itself a law-abiding global power, it has chosen to inform international authorities of planned satellite launches.

The issue is that the technology used for both satellite launches and ICBMs is "essentially the same," AFP quoted Choi Gi-il, professor of military studies at Sangji University, as saying.

Is this Pyongyang's first satellite launch?

According to the experts, North Korea does not have a functional satellite in space.

Pyongyang has launched five satellites since 1998, out of which, three failed immediately and two appeared to have been positioned into orbit.

Though, signals from the ones into orbit have never been independently detected, which indicates a possibility of those being in a non-functional state.

"Satellites launched by North Korea in the past were effectively ICBM tests disguised as normal satellites," An Chan-il, a defector-turned-researcher who runs the World Institute for North Korea Studies, told AFP.

"The upcoming launch is being advertised by Pyongyang as a state-of-the-art satellite," he said, adding it showed the North was eager to enter "the so-called 'military space era' before Seoul does".

Is this a race between the South and North?

Seoul's defence ministry told AFP that South Korea is yet to develop a satellite "specifically and solely for military purposes".

In response, "Kim Jong Un has likely increased pressure on his scientists and engineers to launch a North Korean spy satellite," Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, told AFP.

It is doubtful North Korea "has the remote sensing technologies for a proper reconnaissance satellite. However, even a rudimentary eye in the sky could have military uses and would offer domestic political value for the Kim regime".

Will the launch be successful?

"North Korea is known to have failed a number of times," AFP quoted Choi of Sangji University as saying about ICBM's re-entry into the atmosphere.

However, "it is rumoured there was a transfer of know-how from Russia and China to the North, though it is not officially confirmed," he said.

"Even a failed satellite launch, like in 2016, shows North Korea's capability and intentions to develop longer-range ballistic missiles", the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies said at the time.

"It is an attempt by Pyongyang to show it has the capability to keep Seoul's nuclear deterrent in check with a spy satellite. They are sending this message: 'We can see you through and strike anytime.'"

North Korea confirms it is launching spy satellite in June: Report

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - South Korea to expand arms exports to Europe, North Korea to launch first spy satellite, Poland to set up commission on Russian influence, Clashes in Germany after Erdogan's victory, 17th air attack on Kyiv this month.

North Korea to launch 1st spy satellite | S. Korea to expand arm exports to Europe

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un had embarked on a big exercise to seal its borders with Russia and China, cutting off routes which were being used by defectors and smugglers, in 2020 when the world was battling the Covid pandemic.

Since then hundreds of kilometres of upgraded or new border fences, guard posts and walls have been built by Pyongyang, as per commercial satellite imagery.

These steps helped the government in tightening the flow of goods and information in the country and also ensured that foreign elements are kept out and its people remain inside, according to a report published by Reuters.

"The traditional North Korea-China route is now effectively over, unless there is a major change in the situation," stated Kim, who is a South Korean pastor. Kim along with others has helped North Koreans defect.

Last year, only 67 defectors could reach South Korea compared to 1,047 in 2019, as per official data. There was a decline in the figure even before the pandemic because of tighter restrictions in China, the route towards which is preferred by defectors.

How border walls helped North Korea keep out coronavirus and 'alien things'?

The government of North Korea and state media have spoken little about the construction of the wall at the border. However, the country's official organisations have noted that the security was beefed up to ensure that coronavirus and other "alien things" stay out of the country.

In his speech in which Kim Jong Un declared victory over COVID-19, he had asked officials to "ensure perfection" of an "overall multiple blockade wall in the border, frontline and coast areas and in the seas and air".

The sealing of the border will have a lasting effect on the nascent mercantile class of North Korea and over towns where thriving informal trade earlier offered the opportunity to people to make their own way, stated Benjamin Katzeff Silberstein, a non-resident fellow at the US-based Stimson Center who researches on the economy of North Korea.

Those towns "benefited from formal and informal trade since the famine in the 1990s, but really don't have many other economic advantages," he stated. "So the crackdowns are hitting two vulnerable groups, women and the population of the geographic periphery,” he added.

Are these border walls choking people's lifelines?

Google Earth Pro satellite imagery of the northern frontier of North Korea, which was collected at various time intervals from 2019 and early 2023, was examined by Reuters and Middlebury.

Middlebury research associate Dave Schmerler said that they could see new or expanded security infrastructure along at least 489 km of the border, which included the robust concrete wall, simple wire fencing, additional guard posts and double fencing.

He added that apparent changes were also seen in other areas, however, limitations in the imagery stopped them from reaching conclusive determinations.

Schmerler stated that many installations could be seen around populated areas that lacked natural obstacles like mountains. However, they also noticed new features in agricultural, flat areas near the country's northeastern border.

"Those areas don't necessarily have larger city or village infrastructure but lack the natural boundaries that could act as a barrier from getting into or leaving the country," added Schmerler.

Human rights activists and defectors in China, who are involved in smuggling people or goods across the border, stated that the new security features have been choking vulnerable people's economic lifelines, closing their paths to escape the country that has an authoritarian regime and limiting access to North Korea to the outside information.

One defector stated that the officials have placed security cameras at regular intervals and have installed multiple layers of fencing, which includes electric fencing and barbed wire.

In a statement sent to Reuters, China's foreign ministry stated it was not aware of the situation, but added that "China and North Korea have been maintaining communication and working together to maintain the security and stability of the border".

Did North Korea use COVID-19 as an excuse to build border fences?

The government of North Korea gave orders to border guards to immediately shoot anyone who is seen trying to cross, as per official notices issued by Chinese authorities in 2020, which were released to warn people about the risks involved.

Human rights organisations have confirmed that the shooting orders still remain in effect.

In December 2022, the US Treasury Department sanctioned North Korea's Border Guard General Bureau over human rights abuses, "including land mines and shoot-on-sight orders that have resulted in the deaths of numerous North Koreans".

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch's senior Korean researcher Lina Yoon said, "The North Korean government has been using COVID-19 as an excuse to build these new fences, guard posts and other infrastructure.”

Sokeel Park, who is associated with Liberty – an organisation that works with defectors, stated that as the pandemic subsides, it may become harder for the government to justify the restrictions.

"It's all the more reason for the international community to step up efforts to support North Korean rights," he added.

WATCH | Why is North Korea constructing a satellite launch pad with 'new urgency'? Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch's senior Korean researcher Lina Yoon said, "The North Korean government has been using COVID-19 as an excuse to build these new fences, guard posts and other infrastructure.” Sokeel Park, who is associated with Liberty – an organisation that works with defectors, stated that as the pandemic subsides, it may become harder for the government to justify the restrictions. "It's all the more reason for the international community to step up efforts to support North Korean rights," he added. Explained | When world was battling pandemic, why North Korea was busy sealing borders with China and Russia

North Korea has informed Japan of its plan to launch what it calls a 'satellite' between May 31 and June 11, said a Japanese coast guard official on Monday.

As per the Japanese officials, the launch is set to involve a ballistic projectile, according to a tweet from the prime minister's office that alludes to a "ballistic missile that it (Pyongyang) describes as a satellite."

Analysts believe that North Korea is launching its military 'satellite' in an attempt to improve its surveillance technology and advance its ability to strike targets whenever a conflict occurs.

The unnamed Japanese coastguard said that the rocket, which is set to be launched between May 31 and June 11, will plummet into the waters near the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and east of Luzon Island in the Philippines, according to news agency AFP.

In a tweet, the Japanese prime minister's office said that PM Fumio Kishida issued instructions "on North Korea's notification about the launch of a ballistic missile that it describes as a satellite".

He further urged North Korea to abstain and said he would work closely with allies.

"We strongly urge North Korea to refrain from launching," the prime minister's office said on Twitter, adding it would cooperate "with relevant countries such as the U.S. and South Korea".

He has instructed the officials to remain vigilant, issuing an order for the Air Self-Defense Force to knock down any ballistic projectile confirmed to be on course to fall into the country's territory.

The ministry said that the soldiers would be authorised to use Standard Missile SM-3 and Patriot Missile PAC-3 to destroy the missile in mid-air.

"Even if it's described as a satellite, a launch using ballistic missile technology would be a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and a serious problem that threatens the safety of people," Kishida told reporters.

Meanwhile, North Korean state media published a statement from its vice minister of foreign affairs, appearing to endorse a conciliatory approach to relations with Japan.

If Japan avoids "being shackled by the past, and seeks a way out for improving the relations, there is no reason for the DPRK and Japan not to meet", the statement from Pak Sang Gil said.

Kim Jong Un seen on site

North Korea's state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un inspected a military satellite facility on May 16 from where the military reconnaissance satellite No. 1 will be launched. According to the report, Kim has also authorised the non-permanent satellite-launching preparatory committee's next stages in the action plan.

Last year in December, a report by the state media said that North Korea has executed an "important final-stage" test of launching a military reconnaissance satellite into orbit at its rocket launching site, with plans to finish preparations for the project by April.

The KCNA had reported that the test was carried out at the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground to "evaluate the capabilities of satellite photography, data transmission system, and ground control system".

KCNA said that on Tuesday, "after acquainting himself in detail with the work of the committee, (Kim) inspected the military reconnaissance satellite No. 1, which is ready for loading after undergoing the final general assembly check and space environment test".

Satellite or missile? Japan prepares defences as N Korea set for 'ballistic object' launch

A two-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment after North Korean officials found a Bible from his parents.

This incident was revealed by the US State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report 2022, documenting the regime’s crackdown on people having religious beliefs.

North Korea considers itself an atheist state despite officially granting freedom to practice religion. However, the Kim Jon-un regime continues to muzzle religious activities in the state.

The report mentioned that the family has been jailed, and even the child wasn’t spared.

The publication has based its findings on various non-governmental organisations (NGOs), human rights groups, and the United Nations to reveal how Christians—estimated by the UN between 200,000 and 400,000—are being persecuted for their faith under the Kim Jong-un regime. It said that so far, 70 Christians have been jailed.

The US report also exposed multiple cases of North Koreans being killed for having Christian beliefs. In one incident, the report notes, a woman and her grandchild were executed by firing squad in 2011.

Others also faced starvation, dehydration, tainted food, beatings, and being made to adopt agonising positions for prolonged periods.

Though the report, citing Korea Future NGO, points out that the state has punished those practising shamanism, it was Christians who have received the harshest punishments.

The publication said several North Korean Christians hid their faith from their children out of fear of punishment.

It cited the finding of one NGO, Open Doors USA (ODUSA), which said: “A Christian is never safe.”

“Children are encouraged to tell their teachers about any sign of faith in their parents’ home.”

Korea Future said children were taught in school about the “evil deeds” of Christian missionaries, including “rape, blood sucking, organ harvesting, murder, and espionage”.

“One defector told Korea Future, the government published graphic novels in which Christians coaxed children into churches and took them to the basement to draw their blood,” the report said.

The media of North Korea called the plans of South Korea, Japan and the United States to share real-time data on the missile launches by the regime of Kim Jong-un as “sinister measures” as the Jong-un government lashed out at South for carrying out live-fire exercises with the US.

The leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea met at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan and discussed new co-ordination in the wake of illicit nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

A series of missile and weapons tests have been undertaken by North Korea in recent months, the most recent being in a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

US and South Korea start live-fire exercises

The US and South Korean forces started the live-fire exercises on Thursday, which simulated a "full-scale attack" launched by North Korea, which they called as the biggest such drill to display the "overwhelming" military capability of the South against the growing threats of North.

Howitzers were fired in Pocheon's mountainside near North Korea's fortified border. Meanwhile, manoeuvring battle tanks fired their guns at the targets, which sent dust, smoke as well as shockwaves across the valley.

Around 2,500 troops from the United States and South Korea participated in the exercises. These exercises will be carried out four more times from now until mid-June, stated South Korea's defence ministry.

"The exercise demonstrated our military's capability and readiness to strongly respond to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and to a full-scale attack," the ministry added in a press release, vowing to maintain "peace through overwhelming strength".

North Korea's first military spy satellite

Last week, the state media of North Korea reported that final approval was given by their leader Kim Jong Un for final preparations for launching the country's first military spy satellite.

Kim stated that it is important for the country to counter threats from South Korea and the US. Analysts stated that the satellite will improve the surveillance capability of North Korea which will enable it to hit targets more accurately when it engages in a war.

In recent commercial satellite imagery, progress made on the new launch pad in the satellite launching station of North could be seen, with activity appearing to be carried out with a "new level of urgency” for the launch, stated the US-based monitoring group 38 North.

The forces of South Korea and the US have been carrying out multiple training exercises in recent months, which included air and sea drills involving US B-1B bombers.

North Korea has angrily reacted to the drills which it characterised as preparations being carried out by US and South Korean forces for an invasion.

North Korea criticises ‘sinister’ South as live-fire exercises with US start

North Korea is fully prepped for placing its satellites in space. The construction of a satellite launching station in North Korea has hit a 'new level of urgency'. The launchpad is most likely to be prepared for the launch of its newly-constructed spy satellite. Leader Kim Jong Un has approved final preparations for a launch, to place it in orbit.

Why is North Korea constructing a satellite launch pad with 'new urgency'?

The construction of a satellite launching station in North Korea has hit a “new level of urgency" as it is reported to be preparation for a launch, stated a US-based think tank in a report, which cited commercial satellite imagery.

North Korea said that its first military spy satellite has been completed and leader Kim Jong Un has given approval for final preparations to launch it and successfully place it in orbit, without announcing a date.

On Monday, commercial satellite imagery showed that construction of a new launch pad is progressing steadily in a coastal area east of North Korea’s Sohae Satellite Launching Station and going forward at a "remarkable pace", stated 38 North, a Washington-based programme which monitors North Korea, in its report on Thursday.

"While the key components of the Sohae complex have been undergoing modernisation and expansion over the past year, this uptick in activity suggests a new level of urgency in making the site ready to accommodate satellite launches," the report stated.

Features of the new launch pad

The new launch pad is likely to feature a rail-mounted assembly structure which is likely to be used for lifting a rocket into place, a tunnel for funnelling flames away and lighting towers.

If the launch pad will be used to service liquid-fuelled rockets, then the structure will most likely need additional infrastructure, added the report.

At the main launch pad of Sohae, crews appear to have made modifications to the gantry tower, while they continue to work on a storage for fuel and oxidizer.

A new area, from where VIPs are likely to observe launches has also been reportedly completed, stated 38 North.

Analysts stated that the military satellite will be part of the efforts of the nuclear-armed state to enhance surveillance technology, which includes drones as well as improve its ability to hit targets during conflicts.

Several attempts have been made by North Korea to launch "earth observation" satellites among which two have been placed successfully in orbit, the last one happening in 2016.

International observers stated that the satellite appeared to be under control, however, there was lingering debate over whether any transmissions were sent by them.

Construction at North Korea’s satellite launch pad hits ‘new urgency’: Report

The governments of the United States and South Korea on Tuesday (May 23) announced new North Korean sanctions related to thousands of IT workers, many operating in China and Russia, whose labours allegedly help fund weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and missile programmes.

The governments of the United States and South Korea on Tuesday (May 23) announced new North Korean sanctions related to thousands of IT workers, many operating in China and Russia, whose labours allegedly help fund weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and missile programmes. According to a statement issued by the US Treasury Department, "The DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) conducts malicious cyber activities and deploys information technology (IT) workers who fraudulently obtain employment to generate revenue, including in virtual currency, to support the Kim regime and its priorities, such as its unlawful weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programmes." The Treasury Department said that one individual Kim Sang Man, and the North Korea-based Chinyong Information Technology Cooperation Company were sanctioned jointly (by the US and South Korea) in relation to their IT worker activities. North Korea oversees thousands of IT workers worldwide, primarily those in China and Russia to generate revenue that contributes to its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programmes, the statement said. "In some cases, DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) IT workers can each earn more than $300,000 per year. These workers deliberately obfuscate their identities, locations, and nationalities, typically using fake personas, proxy accounts, stolen identities, and falsified or forged documentation to apply for jobs at these companies," it added. Three N.Korean entities previously sanctioned by South Korea The department also said that three entities - the 110th Research Center, Pyongyang University of Automation, and Technical Reconnaissance Bureau - were previously sanctioned by South Korea for engaging in cyber operations and illicit revenue generation that support North Korea's WMD programs. Technical Reconnaissance Bureau currently leads North Korea's offensive cyber efforts and oversees staff affiliated with the infamous Lazarus hacking group. Lazarus had been accused of carrying out some of the largest virtual currency heists to date. "On March 23, 2022, the Lazarus Group carried out the largest virtual currency heist to date, stealing about $620 million in virtual currency from a blockchain project linked to the online game Axie Infinity," the department also said on Tuesday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inspected the country’s first military spy satellite, giving the go-ahead for what state media described as a "future action plan".

North Korea's first spy missile gets final nod from Kim Jong-Un

North Korea's state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un inspected a military satellite facility on Tuesday from where the military reconnaissance satellite No. 1 will be launched. According to the report, Kim has also authorised the non-permanent satellite-launching preparatory committee's next stages in the action plan.

The committee is a group dedicated to launching North Korea's first military intelligence satellite.

The state media reported earlier this year that Pyongyang has completed building its first military spy satellite and final preparations to launch the satellite were underway.

So far, there is no information regarding the scheduled date of the launch.

But the report noted that Kim has said that the successful launch of the military reconnaissance satellite is an "urgent requirement of the prevailing security environment of the country".

One of Kim's primary defence goals for 2021 was the building of a military reconnaissance satellite. Experts in South Korea questioned the results at the time, claiming that the quality of the black-and-white photographs given by North Korea – reportedly captured from a satellite – was poor.

Analysts have said that Pyongyang might face issues while doing satellite reconnaissance with its own technology and without high-tech help from Russia or China.

Yang Moo-jin, who is the president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told news agency AFP last month that "since North Korea's reconnaissance satellites are an important factor in the event of a nuclear pre-emptive strike, they pose a significant threat to the South".

North Korea is about to launch its 1st spy satellite as Kim Jong Un seen on site

In an effort to forge strong connections with South Korea in the face of North Korean nuclear threats and China's increasing assertiveness, Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, is currently in Seoul after starting his first trip to South Korea.

An agreement between the United States and South Korea, which is aimed at strengthening deterrence against Pyongyang, has been criticised by North Korea, news agency Reuters reported on Monday (May 1) citing state media KCNA. North Korea has reacted angrily to the Yoon-Biden summit as it warned that the meeting consolidated its conviction to perfect its "nuclear war deterrent".

The response comes after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his US counterpart Joe Biden met in Washington last week to discuss issues of mutual interest.

Washington and Seoul vowed that North Korea would face a nuclear response and there would be an "end" of the leadership, in case it uses its own arsenal.

In its report, KCNA cited Choe Ju Hyon, terming him an international security analyst, as saying that the agreement stipulated the allies' willingness to take "the most hostile and aggressive action" against North Korea.

The report added that the deployment of American strategic assets has placed the situation of the Korean peninsula in a "quagmire of instability," and was intended to build "aggressive and exclusive military blocs" in the region.

KCNA said, "It is just aimed to dodge the responsibility for the worst-ever nuclear-related crimes it has committed by systematically destroying and violating the nuclear non-proliferation system, and in particular, pushing the situation of the Korean Peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war."

"It is the hegemonic sinister aim pursued by the U.S. to turn the whole of South Korea into its biggest nuclear war outpost in the Far East and effectively use it for attaining its strategy for dominating the world," it added.

North Korea slams US-South Korea summit, says it will lead situation to 'brink of a nuclear war'

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has issued a warning to the US and South Korea for signing a new nuclear weapons agreement and called President Joe Biden 'senile' and 'too miscalculating and irresponsibly brave' for his statements.

Kim said that the new agreement aimed at strengthening deterrence against Pyongyang would lead to 'more serious danger' in the region.

“When we consider that this expression was personally used by the president of the US, our most hostile adversary, it is threatening rhetoric for which he should be prepared for far too great an after-storm,” she was quoted as saying by state news agency KCNA.

"The more the enemies are dead set on staging nuclear war exercises, and the more nuclear assets they deploy in the vicinity of the Korean peninsula, the stronger the exercise of our right to self-defence will become in direct proportion to them," she added.

“The pipe dream of the US and (South) Korea will henceforth be faced with the entity of more powerful strength."

Why did Kim's sister lash out?

The statement by Kim Yo Jong comes in the backdrop of Biden saying Kim Jong Un's regime would cease to exist if he were to launch a nuclear attack on the United States or its allies. Biden made the comment after signing the Washington Declaration while South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeo was on a US visit earlier this week.

"A nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies or partners is unacceptable and will result at the end of whatever regime were to take such an action," Biden had said.

This is not the first instance when Pyongyang's top leaders have hurled such derogatory words at the US president. In 2017, Kim Jong Un called then-president Donald Trump a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard” while both were engaged in exchanging verbal threats.

Under the declaration, Seoul will not be developing its own nuclear weapons but the US will aid in the use of them in any potential conflict with North Korea.

The US will also deploy nuclear-armed submarines to South Korea as part of the agreement. Additionally, there will be a routine visit of aircraft carriers and bombers to the region to send a message to the enemy, informed officials.

Kim Jong Un’s sister calls Joe Biden ‘senile’, blasts US-S Korea for new nuclear deal

British American Tobacco (BAT) was ordered to pay $635 million plus interest to US authorities, after admitting selling cigarettes to North Korea in breach of sanctions via a subsidiary.

The payment, according to US authorities, was linked to BAT activities in North Korea between 2007 and 2017, reported the BBC.

Jack Bowles, the CEO of BAT, said, "We deeply regret the misconduct." As a result of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, the US has imposed harsh sanctions on the country.

BAT and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control reached a settlement on Tuesday.

One of the top 10 largest firms in the UK and one of the biggest tobacco giants in the world is BAT. Major cigarette brands owned by this company include Lucky Strike, Dunhill, and Pall Mall.

In a statement, BAT said it had entered into a "deferred prosecution agreement with DOJ and a civil settlement agreement with OFAC, and an indirect BAT subsidiary in Singapore has entered into a plea agreement with DOJ".

According to the DOJ, BAT also planned to deceive financial institutions into processing transactions on behalf of North Korean entities by defrauding them.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, is a well-known routine smoker. The US tried to get the UN Security Council to forbid the export of tobacco to North Korea last year, but Russia and China blocked the proposal.

The settlement was the "culmination of a long-running investigation," according to Matthew Olsen, assistant attorney general for the DOJ, who also called it "the single largest North Korean sanctions penalty in the history of the Department of Justice."

He said that BAT was engaged in an "elaborate scheme to circumvent US sanctions and sell tobacco products to North Korea" via subsidiaries.

"Between 2007 and 2017 these third-party companies sold tobacco products to North Korea and received approximately $428m."
