Japan ordered its military Saturday to prepare to shoot down a North Korean ballistic missile after Pyongyang said this week it was ready to launch its first military spy satellite.

Placing the satellite into orbit would require a long-range projectile, which North Korea is banned from launching because the United Nations views such exercises as tests of ballistic missile technology.

On Saturday Japanese minister Yasukazu Hamada told the country's Self-Defense Forces "there is a possibility of ordering destructive measures against ballistic missiles and others", according to a statement from the ministry of defence.

Hamada instructed troops to "implement measures necessary to limit damage in the event of a ballistic missile falling".

Morning news brief: North Korea an 'irreversible' nuclear power, Jaishankar meets UN chief, and more

After the G7 condemned its ballistic missile launches and demanded that it completely denuclearise, North Korea retaliated Friday saying its position as a nuclear power is "final and irreversible."

This comes after G7 ministers in a joint statement condemned North Korea for its "unprecedented number of unlawful ballistic missile launches, including the April 13 launch of what North Korea claimed as a solid-fuel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile."

"We reiterate our unwavering commitment to the goal of North Korea’s complete, verifiable, and irreversible abandonment of its nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs, and any other weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs," the G7 document read.

Hitting back at the US and other G7 nations, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said the country will remain an "undeniable reality" even if it's not accepted. She also condemned the US and other members for urging Pyongyang to denuclearise.

She said that Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons was solely done to protect itself from American threats. She urged Washington to halt its "hostile policy" towards North Korea in order to safeguard its own security. "It is an anachronistic idea if you think that only Washington has the right and capability to carry out a nuclear strike," reported Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoting the foreign minister.

"As long as we have the strength to hit back against U.S. nuclear threats, we will never seek recognition or approval from anyone."

Choe said urging North Korea to denuclearise is an illegal interference in country's internal matters. The minister further cautioned US and G7 nations that Pyongyang will resort to strong action in case its sovereignty and fundamental interests are violated.

"We will continue all legitimate action granted to any sovereign states until military threats from the U.S. and its allied hostile forces are completely eliminated, and the hostile environment that impedes our independent existence and development is fundamentally ended," Choe said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered officials to go ahead with the launch of the first spy satellite as planned, state media reported on Wednesday (April 19).

Kim said that the satellite launch will boost the nation's capability of military observation of a region to locate an enemy or ascertain strategic features, in order to counter "threats" from the United States and South Korea.

News agency Reuters mentioned that a state media photo showed Kim, accompanied by his daughter, talking to officials in front of a blurred image of an apparent satellite.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered officials to go ahead with the launch of the first spy satellite as planned, state media reported on Wednesday (April 19).

Last year in December, North Korea conducted what it called an important "final phase" test for a spy satellite. It also said it would complete preparations for the launch by April. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un orders spy satellite launch as planned

Chinese President Xi Jinping told North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that the two countries need to ramp up communications as international and regional “situations” are “changing seriously and in a complicated way,” reported Pyongyang’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), on Tuesday (April 18).

This comes amid a rise in tensions in the Korean peninsula and hours before the Group of Seven (G7) rich nations condemned North Korea’s series of missile tests in the region.

What did Xi say to Kim?

In a recent message to Kim, Xi reportedly said that China and North Korea’s “traditional friendship” has “weathered the trials of the changed international situation for a long time, constantly maintained the trend of its development and got stronger with the passage of time”.

The Chinese president, as per the KCNA added that “international and regional situations are now changing seriously and in a complicated way.”

“I am willing to strengthen strategic communications with Comrade General Secretary (Kim), jointly lead the direction of development of China-DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) relations, and promote friendly cooperation between the two sides to a higher level,” said Xi referring to North Korea by its formal name.

Timing of the message

According to reports, Xi’s message was delivered to Kim last week, on Wednesday. China’s Xi urges North Korea’s Kim to boost communications amid ‘complex’, ‘serious’ changes

G7 meet in Japan: G7 ministers vow tough stance on China, North Korea

South Korea fired warning shots at a North Korean vessel after it crossed the disputed maritime border, said the South Korean military, on Sunday (April 16). This comes amid a rise in tensions between the two countries over Pyongyang’s missile tests and military activities in recent weeks.

South Korea on North Korean incursion

After the incident, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) released a statement and said that they fired warning shots as well as broadcast warnings asking the North Korean patrol boat to turn back which had breached the Northern Limit Line (NLL) at around 11:00 am (local time).

This breach prompted the South Korean Navy to dispatch its Chamsuri-class patrol boat which broadcast warnings but its communication attempts were reportedly not responded to by the North Korean vessel. Subsequently, the South Korean vessel fired 10 warning shots with its autocannon and then the North Korean boat retreated.

It added, “Our military maintains decisive battle posture while monitoring the enemy’s movements in preparation for potential provocations regarding NLL violations by North Korean patrol boats.”

The JCS also said that during this operation, the South Korean patrol ship came into “minor contact” with a nearby Chinese fishing vessel due to bad visibility. However, it did not result in any safety issues but did report some minor injuries among the South Korean crew.

According to the JCS, the North Korean vessel stayed south of NLL for around 10 minutes before it crossed some two kilometres of the maritime border.

However, a JCS official later told reporters that there was a “low possibility” that Pyongyang’s boat intentionally crossed the NLL and that might have been chasing the Chinese vessel while sailing on a zigzagged path, reported the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The disputed maritime border

According to media reports, this incident marked the first time since March last year that the South had fired warning shots at a North Korean patrol boat crossing the NLL. The border which was drawn at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War has been disputed by Pyongyang since the 1990s, which argues that it should lie far to the south.

This also comes months after the two countries traded warning shots in the western waters and accused each other of breaching the sea border.

South Korea fires warning shots as North Korean patrol boat breaches maritime border

North Korea's latest missile launch sparked evacuations in Japan. The missile may have been a new type of weapon. What is the North Korean leader up to? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Millions in Japan told to take immediate cover

North Korea just can’t seem to stop launching missiles. The world is amazed to see the country's growing missile capabilities. The country has ramped up its brinkmanship with more regular tests and explosive rhetoric. Recently, North Korea tested a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The launch of solid-fuel ICBM is the country's first known use of the propellant in a longer-range projectile.

What is solid-fuel technology, and why is North Korea eager to develop it?

North Korea said that it had test-fired a new solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to improve the country's nuclear counterattack capability. Analysts said it is the North Korea's first use of solid propellants in an intermediate-range or intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea said on Friday (April 14) that it tested a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Hwasong-18 — its "most powerful" missile to date — to "radically promote" the country's nuclear counterattack capability. According to state media, North Korea warned of causing "extreme uneasiness and horror" to enemies.

"The development of the new-type ICBM Hwasongpho-18 will extensively reform the strategic deterrence components of the DPRK, radically promote the effectiveness of its nuclear counterattack posture and bring about a change in the practicality of its offensive military strategy," said a report by the KCNA news agency.

The purpose of the test launch was to confirm the performance of the high-power solid-fuel multi-stage engines, the stage separation technology, and the reliability of the control systems with different functions, and to evaluate the military effectiveness of the new strategic weapons system.

Photographs released by state media showed supreme leader Kim Jong Un- accompanied by his daughter watching the missile blast off in a cloud of smoke, and smiling in jubilation after the purportedly successful launch.

Kim said the new weapon would greatly recognise North Korea's strategic deterrence and reinforce the effectiveness of its nuclear counterattack, the KCNA reported.

"We will strike with deadly force and respond aggressively until the enemy gives up its idle strategy and foolish behaviour and so that it will suffer in endless fear," he added.

North Korea tests ‘most powerful’ missile, warns enemies of ‘extreme uneasiness and horror’

North Korea has claimed it has tested a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile. If this is true, it marks a major breakthrough in Kim Jong-Un's banned weapons program. Testing the more technologically advanced solid-fuel missile has been on Kim's wishlist for a long time. What is solid-fuel technology? What does the latest test mean for escalating tensions in the Korean peninsula? And what is the path to de-escalation?

New Missile, New Threat: Why is North Korea after solid-fuel tech?

A "unspecified ballistic missile" was shot by North Korea, according to the military in Seoul. Although the missile's specifics were unknown, Japan wrongly believed it would approach the island after it was launched, leading to an evacuation order for residents of the northern island of Hokkaido, which was later revoked, according to news agency Reuters.

During his recent remarks, the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the expansion of the country’s war deterrence capabilities in a “more practical and offensive” way, reported the state media, on Tuesday (April 11). This was said in the context of what Kim has called “frantic” aggression by the United States and South Korea.

The report by Pyongyang’s state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), said that these remarks were made on Monday when Kim attended a meeting of the Central Military Commission to discuss ways to “cope with the escalating moves of the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet traitors to unleash a war of aggression.”

This also comes as North Korea has tested a record number of missiles and weapons, since the beginning of this year, including the recently tested nuclear-capable underwater drones, claimed the state media. North Korea's underwater nuclear-powered drones: What are they and which other countries have them?

North Korea claims to have conducted another test of a nuclear-capable underwater attack drone, reported the state media, on Saturday (April 8). The drone in question was the so-called ‘Haeil-2’ which was Pyongyang’s third test and follows the new underwater drone system dubbed ‘Haeil-1’, which translates to “tsunami” in Korean and was unveiled on March 23.

According to reports, the nuclear-capable underwater attack drone is designed to destroy naval vessels and ports. The reports of the four-day test also came a day after nuclear envoys of the United States, South Korea and Japan met in Seoul to discuss the growing North Korean nuclear threat and called for a crackdown on the country’s illicit activities to procure funding for its weapons systems.

The test is also being called North Korea's latest show of force against the United States and South Korea which have been conducting a series of annual spring military exercises in the Korean Peninsula since March. The North Korean state media, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the underwater strategic weapon system test took place between April 4 and April 7.

The drone cruised 1,000 km of underwater distance for 71 hours and six minutes and successfully hit a simulated target. “The test perfectly proved the reliability of the underwater strategic weapon system and its fatal attack ability,” said the KCNA.

So far, Pyongyang has claimed to have conducted three tests of underwater drones in less than three weeks with the first test on March 23 which was reportedly able to unleash a “radioactive tsunami”. At the time, the state media said the drone cruised underwater for 59 hours and 12 minutes before detonation.

Around five days or so later, North Korea claimed that it conducted a second test with the Haiel drone system. Meanwhile, South Korean Defence Minister Lee Jong-sup told MPs that Seoul was “capable of monitoring and detecting such drones infiltrating underwater”.

However, analysts have remained sceptical about whether the underwater vehicle is ready for deployment and would add a meaningful new threat to North Korea’s growing nuclear arsenal. Similarly, South Korea’s military has said it believes North Korean claims about Haeil-1 were likely “exaggerated or fabricated.”

The recent test also came days after South Korea and the US, on Wednesday staged joint air drills which reportedly involved at least one US nuclear-capable B-52H strategic bomber. These exercises are being viewed by North Korea as rehearsals for invasion.

Last year, Pyongyang also declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear power while satellite images show how North Korea has ramped up its production of weapons-grade nuclear material following leader Kim Jong Un’s orders.

North Korea says US-South Korea drills driving tensions in Korean Peninsula to 'brink of nuclear war'

North Korea has not been happy with the US and South Korea for a while now. After all, the two arch rivals, are holding military drills in its backyard. Well, Pyongyang has justified its multiple missile tests with this but today it has gone a step forward. Watch the video to know more.
