Additionally, a woman, 36, in Thane was reported injured when a portion of a single-storey 'chawl' collapsed on Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier issued an orange alert, predicted heavy to hefty rainfall in six districts of Maharashtra, and said that Mumbai is expected to witness relatively less intense showers.

The department has also issued an orange alert for the districts of Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Nashik, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places.

While top cities such as Delhi and Mumbai recorded skyrocketing tomato prices, the city of Hyderabad in the southern Indian state of Telangana is also witnessing a similar price rise. The price of the vegetable, a staple in most Indian homes, has touched Rs 100 per kilogramme.

According to vendors at the Madannapet vegetable market, the price rise is primarily due to a lack of supply in the market. A 23 kg box of tomatoes is being sold anywhere between Rs 1,600 and Rs 2,000 while small-size tomatoes are being sold around Rs 1,200 per box.

In Hyderabad, tomatoes are imported from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. The spread of monsoon rains across the country has made lives difficult for farmers who are unable to harvest the crop.

Why are the prices so high?

Multiple reasons have contributed to the price rise but it is the incessant rains that have had the most significant impact on the inflation. The prices have surged from Rs 10-20 per kg to Rs80-100 per kg due to limited supply caused by crop damage from heavy rainfall and extreme heat.

Experts also pointed out that fewer tomatoes were planted this year as the farmers went for cash crops.

“This year, for a variety of reasons, fewer tomatoes were sown than in prior years. As the price of beans surged last year, many farmers switched to growing beans this year. However, lack of rains caused the crops to dry out and wilt. The limited supply of vegetables, particularly tomatoes are due to crop damage caused by heavy rainfall and extreme heat," Ajay Kedia, a Mumbai-based commodity market expert was quoted as saying by Mint.

Thailand court acquits 5 pro-democracy activists of attempted violence against Queen Suthida

On Wednesday, the Karnataka government, after failing to procure the required quantity of rice to roll under its Annya Bhagya Scheme, said that it will pay cash for the additionally pledged rice promised to BPL (Below the Poverty Line) families under one of the five pre-poll campaign guarantees by the Congress party, TOI reported.

The ruling government said that it would pay Rs 34 per kg for the additional 5 kg.

Centre denied us rice

During the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the government has decided to go for an open-market tender to procure the rice, which will start this Thursday (July 01).

He said, "It is a temporary measure. To keep our word, we have decided to give cash. As and when we get sufficient rice, the cash disbursements will be stopped and rice will be distributed."

In its 2023 assembly elections, the Congress party promised to increase the quantity of rice provided to BPL to 10 kg instead of 5kg.

As government plan ran into a rough patch after the Food Corporation of India, refused to sell any additional quantity of rice to Karnataka, following a directive from the Centre.

CM Siddaramiah said, "Despite having sufficient stock, Centre has denied us rice. On the other hand, rice is being solf to private players through action. This shows the Centre is trying to scuttle our scheme."

He also argued that the former chief minister's BS Yediyurappa and Basavaraj Bommai should have asked the cabinet government for rice to be released for the state.

Money will be paid to the heads

The state's minister for food and civil supplies, KH Muniyappa, said that each member of the BPL family will be paid Rs 170 by way of cash transfer at Rs 34 per kg of rice from the month of July.

The minister clarified that if there are five members in a BPL family, then the family will be paid Rs 850 per month, and the money will be directly deposited in the bank account of the head of the family, directly through the direct benefit transfer (DBT).

However, the 1.4 million families to whom the state gave BPL cards, over and above the limit set by the Centre will not be receiving this additional benefit.

HK Patil, the law and parliamentary affairs minister said that the Centre sets the limit for each state to issue the Public Distribution System cards. It added that over and above that, the state government will be bearing the expenses.

"We need 22,000 tonnes of rice to cater to these families. Procuring this quantity will not be a problem for our government."

The Congress party won Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023 defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on May 13, 2023.

'Centre denied us rice': Amid row with centre, Karnataka govt to pay cash instead of promised extra rice stack

Ford Motor has announced plans to carry out layoffs this week, primarily affecting engineering jobs in the United States and Canada. The job cuts are part of Ford's cost-cutting measures as the company undergoes a restructuring of its business operations.

The layoffs as per CNBC are expected to impact all three of Ford's business units: Ford Blue, which focuses on internal combustion engine operations; Model e, the electric vehicle unit; and Ford Pro, the fleet service operations.

How many people will be affected by the layoffs?

In its most recent quarterly filing, Ford stated that it expected to incur charges in 2023 between $1.5 billion and $2 billion "primarily attributable to employee separations and supplier settlements".

This is comparable to similar actions in 2021 and 2022, which resulted in charges of $2 billion and $608 million, respectively.

Ford has been implementing restructuring efforts for several years as part of its Ford+ plan, led by CEO Jim Farley.

Last year in August, the company cut 3,000 workers in North America and recently conducted 3,800 layoffs in Europe.

Ford stated in its first-quarter filing that it would continue to review its global businesses and may take additional restructuring actions in cases where sustained profitability is not feasible.

According to Ford's Farley, the company faces a cost disadvantage of approximately $7 billion compared to some of its competitors. The company aims to address this through efficiency gains and job reductions.

Ford and job cuts

In 2022, Ford's employee headcount decreased by approximately 10,000 people to 173,000 globally.

The employees affected by the most recent job cut will be offered severance pay, benefits, and assistance in finding new career opportunities. Reportedly, the layoffs have been communicated to contractors and team leaders, with employees expected to be notified throughout the week. The company has instructed affected units to work remotely during this period.

Ford's restructuring efforts align with the broader trend in the automotive industry, with other automakers such as General Motors and Stellantis also implementing layoffs and cost-cutting measures to focus more on the electric vehicles markets.

Ford announces job cuts; layoff to affect engineering jobs in United States and Canada

UBS Group is preparing to reduce more than half of the Credit Suisse Group's workforce following the emergency takeover of the bank. The impact of these job cuts is expected to be felt primarily by bankers, traders, and support staff in Credit Suisse's investment bank located in London, New York, and certain parts of Asia.

When will the job cuts happen?

As per a report in Fortune, staff has been told to expect the cuts in three rounds, with the first round projected to take place by the end of July, followed by two additional rounds tentatively planned for September and October.

UBS, which recently completed the acquisition and now has a combined workforce of approximately 120,000 employees, aims to save around $6 billion in staff costs over the coming years.

Quoting sources, Fortune reports that UBS plans to reduce the total combined headcount by roughly 30 per cent, or 35,000 individuals.

This estimate aligns with an approximate reduction of 30,000 predicted this month by analysts at Redburn. Credit Suisse's current headcount stands at approximately 45,000 employees.

How will the job cuts affect the global financial sector?

The reduction in staff at Credit Suisse is expected to exacerbate an already challenging year for global financial sector jobs, as other major banks such as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have also announced substantial cuts.

UBS plans to sack 'more than half' or 35,000 Credit Suisse staff: Report

A self-made Chinese millionaire named Liang Shi is making global headlines—not because he attempted China's most-dreaded exam "Gaokao" for the 27th time, but because he failed to clear it again.

On Friday, after the results were announced, the 56-year-old millionaire found out that he scored only 424 out of 750 points. Known as "the No. 1 Gaokao holdout", Liang has had a stubborn and ambitious dream of studying at China's most reputed college, Sichuan University, for which he needs to clear the exam, the BBC reported.

This time, Liang was just short of the 34 points needed to apply to any university in China.

Liang has attempted the exam a dozen times. He was 16 when he first attempted the exam in 1983. In a conversation with a local media outlet, he said how disappointed he was with this year's result and questioned if he could ever achieve his dream.

The Chinese millionaire told local news outlet Tianmu News, "I used to say 'I just don't believe I won't make it', but now I'm torn."

He further said, "I have been contemplating whether I should continue. Maybe I do need to reflect on myself. I might give up (next year). If I do attend it next year, I will give up my last name Liang if I fail."

Liang Shi's exam history:

Liang is no ordinary man. He is a successful construction materials businessman after facing a lot of struggles. Despite being so successful, not getting a college education always kept him anxious, making him feel anxious.

He always dreamed of being accepted into a prestigious university and becoming an "intellectual."

In an interview in 2014, he said, "I think it's such a pity if you don't go to college, your life won't be complete without higher education."

After failing in his first attempt, Liang worked several jobs but also kept applying for the exam until 1992, when he was considered too old.

The factory where he worked was also shut down due to bankruptcy. He then opened his own wholesale business, which soon made him more successful as a businessman than a student.

However, in 2001, the Chinese government removed the age limit for the Gaokao exam, and Liang began his education journey once again.

Liang had abstained from drinking and playing mahjong to just focus on studying. But it wasn't meant to be.

As many must find it inspiring some thought Liang's story is just a mere publicity stunt.

To which Liang, clarifying all assumptions, said, "What for?"

He added that no one in their right mind would spend years taking the Gaokao exam for a stunt. He said how he sacrificed the joys of life to just focus on studying.

'I might give up': 56-year-old Chinese millionaire fails to clear 'Gaokao' exam for the 27th time

For the first time, Toronto elected a 'non-white' Chinese-Canadian mayor. Olivia Chow pledged to support renters and social causes and reduce the sweeping powers of her office. Chow will also be the first woman to serve as mayor of the Canadian city since Barbara Hall in 1997.

As per the preliminary results, the 66-year-old secured some 37.3 per cent votes, defeating her rival Ana Bailao, former deputy mayor, who won 32.5 per cent vote share.

Here's everything you need to know about Toronto's new mayor:

Olivia Chow: Early life and political career

Born in Hong Kong, Chow shifted to Canada when she was just 13. She is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.

In 1988, Chow was married to Jack Layton until his death in August 2011. A year later, Chow unveiled a statue dedicated to her late husband on 20 August 2012, with tributes to him written in English, Chinese and French. The statue is located in Harbour Square Park at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.

After completing her studies, she became active in politics, working to win the riding office of NDP P Dan Heap in the 1980s. Later in 1997, she ran as an NDP candidate for the House of Commons in Trinity-Spadina. In 2004, she won the Trinity-Spadina again.

Years later, in 2014, she entered the Toronto mayoral elections, in an attempt to defeat Rob Frod after most polls taken over the previous year suggested that she was best placed to win a head-to-head contest against Ford or a multi-candidate contest. Unfortunately, Chow finished the election race third.

As a prominent and progressive voice in Canada's capital politics, Chow again in April announced her campaign for mayor of Toronto in the 2023 by-election.

As the next council meeting is scheduled for July 19, here's what Chow promised to do during her election campaign:

Transit and Housing:

One of the first promises that Chow made was to build a dedicated busway to replace the decommissioned Scarborough RT to the tune of about $60 million. One of the differences between Chow's and her rival's pledge was to raise Toronoto's vacant home tax from one per cent to three per cent.

She promised to build 25,000 homes on city-owned land in the next eight years.

Taxes:

The municipal land taxes will be increased on homes sold for over $3 million. The money collected from the tax increase will be used to support the homeless. Though Chow didn't mention any specific number, she said that the increase will not be near 25 per cent as proposed by her rival candidates. She said that the tax increase will support city's improvements including reduced waiting time on emergency calls.

Strong Mayor Powers:

One of the most prominent promises, Chow made was that she will not use the strong mayor powers handed to municipal leaders by the Ontario government. These powers allow the mayor to overrule a council decision based on provincial priorities such as housing infrastructure, budget or hiring a certain staff.

Weather Update: IMD issues warning alerts in Maharashtra; predicts heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Pune & Thane

In a chilling incident, a man, armed with a sharp machete, chased down and attacked a 19-year-old college student in Pune, a city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The incident could have taken a deadly turn, akin to the one reported in the capital city of Delhi a few weeks back, if it wasn't for the alertness of the locals.

The incident took place around 10 am in the morning near Perugate police chowki, the CCTV footage of which has gone viral on social media platforms.

The video clip shows the girl sitting on the pillion seat of a scooter with her friend when they are stopped by a man carrying a bag. As the girl's friend gets off the vehicle to confront the accused, the latter takes out the weapon from his bag and starts attacking the man, managing to slash him twice before chasing after the woman.

The girl, dressed in a salwar and suit with a bag on her back, assessed the danger quickly and ran for her life before the bystanders got involved and kept the attacker at bay. Eventually, the locals swarmed the attacker and held him until the police arrived.

"This morning, the youth approached the woman who was riding with a friend on a two-wheeler. As the man tried to talk to her, the woman refused to engage in a conversation. Angered by this, the accused whipped out a sharp weapon and attacked her," news agency PTI quoted the DCP of Pune Police as saying.

“The victim's male friend intervened and resisted the attacker and she managed to escape. The attacker chased her but was stopped by people in the vicinity."

The attacker chased her but was stopped by people in the vicinity." (Disclaimer: The video footage might be disturbing for some. Please proceed at your own caution) THIS IS HUGE: Thanks for your efforts, Pune residents - Set the example for Delhi Sakshi Case. Japanese automaker Nissan's shareholders on Tuesday re-elected their chief executive and other board nominees, days after reports emerged of a major fissure within the top hierarchy of the company and allegations of corporate surveillance.

At the first annual meeting since reaching a new deal with alliance partner Renault, Chief Executive Makoto Uchida and 10 other nominees of the board received the full support of the shareholders.

The surveillance controversy

Uchida receiving the long rope comes despite allegations of him carrying out surveillance against his deputy, Ashwani Gupta surfaced in April, earlier this year. Reportedly, Hari Nada, a senior adviser at Nissan wrote a letter to the independent directors on the Japanese automaker's board, revealing the surveillance saga.

In the letter, Nada said Uchida carried out surveillance over a long period in an attempt to acquire leverage to remove an executive and board member that he regarded as an obstacle to reaching a new deal with alliance partner Renault. Last week, the company formally launched an investigation into the matter, according to a Reuters report.

Gupta attended the Tuesday meeting which, incidentally was his last day at the company. His departure was announced last week and the company did not name a new COO to replace him while unveiling the executive line-up.

Despite the events leading up to the meeting, no question regarding surveillance accusations was posed by the shareholders to the top Nissan executives. Only Gupta was asked about his time at the company, to which he preferred to give no answer. Uchida stepped in and said the executive had contributed greatly to projects starting with the formulation of a mid-term plan.

The fast, cheap and easy production of synthetic drugs like cocaine is booming worldwide, and it has radically transformed drug markets around the world. As per a United Nations report released on Sunday, it's not just cocaine, methamphetamine trafficking is also expanding beyond established markets, including in Afghanistan where the drug is now being produced.

In 2021 — the latest year for which data is available — coca bush cultivation and total cocaine production were at record highs. Further, the global number of cocaine users, estimated at 22 million that same year, is growing steadily, reports Reuters citing the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes' (UNODC) annual World Drug Report.

Where are the drugs being produced?

AFP reports that, as per the UN report, criminals continue to exploit conflicts and global crises to expand drug production.

It said that "there are signs" that the war in Ukraine "could trigger an expansion of the manufacture and trafficking of synthetic drugs, given the existing know-how and the large markets... developing in the region".

"Although the global cocaine market continues to be concentrated in the Americas and in Western and Central Europe (with very high prevalence also in Australia), in relative terms it appears that the fastest growth, albeit building on very low initial levels, is occurring in developing markets found in Africa, Asia and South-Eastern Europe," it added.

Drugs and addiction

More people are now battling drug addiction. As per the report, over a period of 10 years, the number of people who use drugs has increased by 23 per cent to 296 million people worldwide.

Additionally, an estimated one in five people, or 39.5 million people around the world, are suffering from drug use disorders.

"The world is currently experiencing a prolonged surge in both supply and demand of cocaine, which is now being felt across the globe and is likely to spur the development of new markets beyond the traditional confines," said UNODC in its report.

20 million consume ecstasy, 22 million people are using cocaine, a further 36 million are on amphetamines while opioids and cannabis use stood at 60 million and 219 million, respectively.

Drug seizures

Reportedly it's not just the use, cocaine seizures seem to have grown faster than production. This has helped contain the total supply to some extent, said the report. Reuters reports that the upper limit of the estimated total supply was higher in the mid-2000s compared to now.

As per UNODC, reports and seizures involving methamphetamine produced in Afghanistan suggested the drug economy was changing in the country.

"The increase in the use and manufacture of methamphetamine in Afghanistan is of growing concern in South-West Asia, where trafficking in the substance is expanding beyond this region."

In Afghanistan, around 80 per cent of the world's illicit opium poppy, which is used to make heroin, was produced. It further predicts that the "changes in opium production in Afghanistan will have implications for opiate markets in virtually all regions of the world."

"Questions remain regarding the linkages between illegal manufacture of heroin and of methamphetamine (in Afghanistan) and whether the two markets will develop in parallel or whether one will substitute the other," it added.

In Germany, on Sunday, a far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate won a vote to become a district leader, marking a significant breakthrough for the party. The AfD, which is considered radical by mainstream parties and faces refusal of cooperation, secured victory in the Sonnenberg district in Thuringia with 52.8 per cent of the vote.

What does AfD's success mean for Germany?

This success, as per Guardian, follows the party's record-high national poll ratings and reflects popular discontent with the governing coalition led by Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which has faced challenges over policy and the budget.
