Thousands marched in cities across the United States on Saturday to protest the Supreme Court's overturning of the federal right to abortion and to urge voters to turn out in a Democratic "blue wave" in next month's key midterm elections.

In Washington, a crowd of mostly women chanted "We won't go back" as they marched. They carried posters calling for a "feminist tsunami" and urging people to "vote to save women's rights."

"I don't want to have to go back to a different time," Emily Bobal, an 18-year-old student, told AFP. "It's kind of ridiculous that we still have to do this in 2022," she said, adding that she is concerned that the conservative-dominated high court might next target same-sex marriage.

"The majority of us are ready to get out and fight for democracy and fight for people's bodily autonomy, women and men," said Kimberly Allen, 70.

With Democrats battling to maintain their narrow control of Congress, the midterm elections could have a decisive impact on the future of such rights, she said.

Several marchers wore armbands or scarves of green, a colour symbolizing abortion rights. Others wore blue, the colour of the Democratic Party and carried huge flags and banners calling for a symbolic "blue wave" of voters to go to the polls on November 8.

A few counter-protesters made their presence known, some of them urging the crowd to "find Jesus Christ," while others shouted that "abortion is murder." They were met with boos.

Similar rallies took place in cities including New York and Denver, Colorado.

"The #WomensWave is coming for EVERY anti-abortion politician, no matter where they live," Rachel O'Leary Carmona, executive director of the nonprofit Women's March organization, said on Twitter. She urged people to elect "more women" as well as male candidates who support abortion rights.

Polls show Democrats only have a slim possibility of maintaining control of the House of Representatives, but their chances are better in the evenly-divided Senate, where Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is the tie-breaking vote.

While Republicans have been campaigning largely on soaring prices, immigration concerns and urban crime, Democrats led by President Joe Biden want to shift the debate to abortion rights and the defence of American democracy.

The Supreme Court in June ended the decades-long federal protection of abortion rights, leaving it to individual states to set their own rules. Since then, several Republican-led states have banned or severely curtailed access to the procedure, provoking a series of legal challenges.

In the latest development, an appeals court in the southwestern state of Arizona on Friday blocked at least for now, a near-total ban on abortions.

In what comes as another horrible incident, about 250 pilot whales have died after beaching on the remote Chatham Island in New Zealand. The incident comes a couple of weeks after over 200 pilot whales were found dead in Australia after getting stranded in a similar manner. New Zealand's department of conservation said that whales were stranded on the northwest of the island and that all of them had died. Those who remained alive were euthanised to ease the pain. "All the stranded pilot whales are now deceased and their bodies will be left to decompose naturally on site," the department said in a statement. "We do not actively refloat whales on the Chatham Islands due to the risk of shark attack to both humans and the whales themselves," it added. The island houses less than 800 people and lies nearly 840 kilometres east of mainland New Zealand which makes it extremely difficult to carry out any rescue operation. Read more: Death Trap: Over two dozen whales dead in New Zealand "The Chatham Islands is a challenging spot for stranding response, known for great white sharks, remote beaches, and a resident population of less than 800 people,” Project Jonah, a marine mammal rescue charity whose volunteers worked on the ground informed. "These mass strandings are distressing events, and while we always hope for surviving whales are able to be refloated, this wasn't an option here. Our thoughts go to the Department of Conservation (DOC) rangers and the local community at this time," it added. Chatham Island has seen its fair share of such unfortunate beaching events. In 1918, over 1000 pilot whales reportedly got stranded on the island, which, to date is the largest recorded beaching event. As reported by WION, the incident in New Zealand comes a couple of weeks after the neighbouring country of Australia witnessed a similar tragedy. According to the department of natural resources, the whales got stuck near the harbour entrance, more popularly known as Hell's gates. Despite the best efforts of authorities, the majority of the whales could not be saved and they died on the same spot where 350 pilot whales had lost their lives two years ago. 36 years since a catastrophic meltdown at the Chernobyl power plant unleashed one of the world's worst nuclear disasters, now "mutant" black frogs are spawning in the vicinity.

The species of frog found in this area, known as the Eastern tree frogs (Hyla Orientalis), typically have bright green skin but now many have sprung up with dark or pigmented skin.

A study published in Evolutionary Applications details the research surrounding these frogs' evolution. Scientists believe that darker skin might help the frogs survive in the exclusion zone.

In what comes as a victory for labour rights organisations and regulators, a National Labor Relations Board judge on Friday ruled that Starbucks illegally fired an employee at its Ann Arbor, Michigan store.

The judge ruled that Starbucks “acted with animus” when it fired the employee and ordered the multinational coffee chain to reinstate the fired worker with back pay.

Moreover, the company will have to hold a meeting with the employees, management as well as government representatives where a notice about workers' rights will be read and Starbucks will have to reassert the agency's filing that it broke the law.

Hannah Whitbeck, the employee in question was fired because she helped build support for unionising the Ann Arbor store.

“I would hope that they learn their lesson, that firing people because they want to start a union is not going to solve their problems. In fact, it’s only going to make it worse.” Whitbeck was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa is in the last essay of his stint as the army leader. In the backdrop of the country going through its worst period, both on the economic and human front courtesy of the devastating floods, Bajwa is now batting for peace. Without naming India Bajwa called for the resolution of all bilateral ties.

“We must give peace a chance by developing a mechanism to resolve all our bilateral issues peacefully. Moreover, as opposed to fighting each other, we should collectively fight hunger, poverty, illiteracy, population explosion, climate change and disease,” said Bajwa at the passing-out parade at Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Bajwa, who is expected to retire after his extended six-year tenure in November, however, asserted that the desire for peace must not be construed as weakness.

“I must highlight here that our desire for peace must not be construed as our weakness. No one should make any mistake about our collective resolve to defend our core interests and every inch of our motherland,” he added.

“We are trying our best to break the political logjam which has denied the countries of South Asia to move forward and resolve all regional and bilateral issues in a peaceful and dignified manner.”

However, experts were not too amused with Bajwa's call. Indian Army's Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain stated it wasn't the first time that Bajwa had came up with such lofty statements.

"This is not the first time that General Bajwa has talked about peace with India. But the follow-up has hardly been evident," Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain told WION.

While Bajwa batted for a peaceful resolution of the relations, he didn't bring Kashmir into the conversation which experts believe was a rarity from the Pakistani army chief.

In April earlier this year, Bajwa had worked the peaceful resolution of disputes between the two neighbours into his speech but added the Kashmir caveat again.

“Pakistan continues to believe in using dialogue and diplomacy to resolve all outstanding issues including the Kashmir dispute and is ready to move forward on this front if India agrees to do so,” Bajwa said.

After Ukraine-Russia, Elon Musk now has a suggestion on how to end China-Taiwan tensions

An explosion at a gas station in County Donegal, Ireland, on Friday resulted in the death of nine individuals, while rescuers continued their search for survivors far into the night.

The incident was described as "a terrible explosion in a very busy location" by Sinn Fein lawmaker Pearse Doherty. Police said they were not yet in a position to provide any information on casualties and did not address the cause of the explosion in a statement that was released late on Friday.

The injured were taken by ferry to Letterkenny University Hospital, which announced that the incident had set off a major emergency protocol and that it was currently dealing with a large number of injured patients.

Around 25 kilometres (16 miles) from the town of Letterkenny, in the vicinity of the village of Creeslough, the explosion occurred at an Applegreen gas station shortly after 3 p.m. local time.

The forecourt, where numerous automobiles were parked, had rubble spread across it. Photos from the site revealed a residential apartment above the gas station's store with walls blown out and a partially collapsed roof.

A professional rescue crew was dispatched to the location from adjacent Northern Ireland, according to the Irish Coast Guard, and its nearby helicopter helped the emergency services.

According to Doherty, the "huge explosion" could be heard for miles around. Hours later, Doherty claimed, people were still trapped inside the structure, albeit some had made contact with the outside emergency services.

"Everyone is hoping for the best but this is a devastating explosion, it's ripped right through this building and this was a very busy location at that point in time," he told national broadcaster RTE from the scene.

The world has seen its fair share of terror attacks. These terrible attacks result in huge losses of life and the devastation of property. People, who survive these are considered lucky, but are they? A 23-year woman who had survived a terror attack when she was a teenager has died after she chose to be euthanised. Shanti De Corte was plagued by depression and PTSD due to the bomb detonation she witnessed back when she was 17 years old. On March 22, 2016, as she and her schoolmates were making their way through the departures area of the Belgian airport in Zaventem in preparation for a vacation to Italy, an ISIS bomb went off. Belgium woman gets euthanised after battling post-terror attack mental trauma for six years

The Indian Air Force celebrated its 90th anniversary on Saturday. On the occasion, a new indigenously made camouflage combat uniform of the IAF has been unveiled. The new battle fatigues are similar to the ones which were introduced for the Indian army on the occasion of the 74th Army Day this year.

As per Times Now, the new battle fatigues carry a digitally pixelated design and not the organic patterns that were used earlier.

The digital pattern of the new uniform is all-terrain friendly. It gives the personnel the freedom and the flexibility to seamlessly move from deserts to mountainous lands, to woodlands etc.

Besides the new pattern, the uniform will have a different, more breathable, lightweight fabric and design that will increase the comfort and efficiency of personnel.

As per reports, ergonomic fitting is a feature that allows both male and female ground duty personnel to maximise their operational capability.

The all-terrain, all-weather uniform can be mass-produced which will also help manufacturers cut production costs.

PTI reports that a senior IAF officer who was wearing the new combat uniform during the anniversary celebrations in Chandigarh, said that the new pattern is called a "disruptive pattern" and it is a terrain pattern.

"If you are undertaking an operation in hilly areas, in desert or in jungle, this pattern merges with the terrain so that we remain camouflaged while undertaking our military operations. This is a very light cloth and moreover, boots are also light," he said adding that the uniform is indigenously made.

Those who are dealing with family violence, drug addiction, and mental illness on the front lines in a nation where weapons abound, claim that support services are in crisis and need to be overhauled in order to stop additional tragedies as Thailand recovers from one of its most tragic mass shootings.

On Thursday, 36 people—mostly children—were killed when a former police officer named Panya Khamrab raided a daycare in the northern Nong Bua Lam Phu region. He then killed his wife and small kid before killing himself.

According to police, the shooter had been sacked from the police department for drug use and had a yaba (methamphetamine in tablet form) addiction.

According to health professionals, using meth can cause paranoia, hallucinations, and aggressive behaviour, and those who quit may develop psychosis.

Drug problem

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime claims that Thailand is a significant transit nation for meth that enters the country via Laos from Myanmar's unstable Shan state. Pills may be purchased for as low as 20 baht (or $0.50) on the street.

In Bangkok and other large cities, it might be simple for drug users to get addiction treatment, but access is far more challenging in rural regions.

Guns galore

Two army officers were fatally shot less than a month ago at a military training facility in Bangkok, the country's capital.

A soldier also murdered 29 people in 2020 during a 17-hour spree that was sparked by a financial quarrel with a senior officer.

The Gun Policy database at Sydney University estimates that there were 10 million weapons in circulation in 2017, or one for every seven individuals, even outside the reach of security authorities.

Domestic violence

According to National Police Chief Damrongsak Kittiprapat, the day of the tragedy started with the shooter fighting with his wife at 4 am and finished with him killing her and their son before taking his own life.

In a nation with a population of 70 million people, there were 2,177 occurrences of domestic abuse during the most recent fiscal year, according to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board.

However, considering how little is known about incidents in Thailand, this is believed to be an underestimate.
