Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez resigned from her post on Monday following the leak of an audio tape where she could be heard making racist remarks and belittling her council colleagues and their children.

Taking responsibility for her actions, Martinez said there were no excuses for her action.

“I sincerely apologize to the people I hurt with my words: to my colleagues, their families, especially to Mike, Sean, and your son," she said in a statement released by her office.

“As a mother, I know better and I am sorry. I am truly ashamed. I know this is the result of my own actions. I’m sorry to your entire family for putting you through this.”

“As someone who believes deeply in the empowerment of communities of color, I recognize my comments undercut that goal,” Martinez continued. “Going forward, reconciliation will be my priority. I have already reached out to many of my Black colleagues and other Black leaders to express my regret in order for us to heal.”

In the leaked tape, which was recorded more than a year ago and remained private until Sunday, Martinez referred to Councilman Mike Bonin’s son as “Parece changuito,” or “like a monkey.”

“They’re raising him like a little white kid which I was like, this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner and then I’ll bring him back," she could be heard saying.

Heatwaves will become so extreme in certain regions of the world within decades that human life there will be unsustainable, the United Nations and the Red Cross said Monday.

Heatwaves are predicted to "exceed human physiological and social limits" in the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and south and southwest Asia, with extreme events triggering "large-scale suffering and loss of life", the organisations said.

Heatwave catastrophes this year in countries like Somalia and Pakistan foreshadow a future with deadlier, more frequent, and more intense heat-related humanitarian emergencies, they warned in a joint report.

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) released the report in advance of next month's UN's COP27 climate change summit in Egypt.

They said aggressive steps needed to be taken immediately to avert potentially recurrent heat disasters, listing steps that could mitigate the worst effects of extreme heat.

"There are clear limits beyond which people exposed to extreme heat and humidity cannot survive," the report said.

"There are also likely to be levels of extreme heat beyond which societies may find it practically impossible to deliver effective adaptation for all.

"On current trajectories, heatwaves could meet and exceed these physiological and social limits in the coming decades, including in regions such as the Sahel and south and southwest Asia."

It warned that the impact of this would be "large-scale suffering and loss of life, population movements and further entrenched inequality."

The combined effects of ageing, warming and urbanisation would cause a significant increase in the number of at-risk people in developing countries in the coming decades.

"Projected future death rates from extreme heat are staggeringly high and comparable in magnitude by the end of the century to all cancers or all infectious diseases and staggeringly unequal," the report said.

Agricultural workers, children, the elderly and pregnant and breastfeeding women are at higher risk of illness and death, the report claimed.

"As the climate crisis goes unchecked, extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and floods, are hitting the most vulnerable people the hardest," said UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths.

"Nowhere is the impact more brutally felt than in countries already reeling from hunger, conflict and poverty."

IFRC Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain urged countries at COP27 to invest in climate adaptation and mitigation in the regions most at risk.

OCHA and the IFRC suggested five main steps to help combat the impact of extreme heatwaves, including providing early information to help people and authorities react in time, and finding new ways of financing local-level action.

They also included humanitarian organisations testing more "thermally-appropriate" emergency shelter and "cooling centres", while getting communities to alter their development planning to take account of likely extreme heat impacts.

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Monday said that the country won't share findings of its probe into the explosions of Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines with Russian authorities.

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Monday said that the country won't share findings of its probe into the explosions of Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines with Russian authorities. Speaking to reporters, Andersson said the details of the investigation were confidential. "In Sweden, our preliminary investigations are confidential, and that, of course, also applies in this case." However, she added that Russian authorities and vessels were free to sail to the sites of the explosion as the crime scene cordon was lifted. "The Swedish economic zone is not a territory that Sweden disposes of. We have lifted the cordons now and then it is also possible for other ships to stay in the area, that is how the rules work," said Andersson. WATCH | The mystery of Nord stream leaks: West & Moscow blame each other × As reported by WION, last week, Russia had thrown its hat into the ring to be included in the investigations, particularly the one being conducted by Sweden. "There should really be an investigation. Naturally, with the participation of Russia," Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin was quoted as saying by state news agencies. Meanwhile, the Swedish foreign ministry informed that it had received a letter from Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, putting forth the same request. "On October 6, a letter was received from Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson requesting that Russian authorities and the company Gazprom be involved in the Swedish investigation," read the statement. However, Sweden, at the time promptly rejected the request made by Moscow. The suspicious incidents were reported in the Baltic Sea off the Danish island of Bornholm. Germany, Denmark, and Sweden have claimed that those were pre-meditated attacks to destroy the pipeline. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called it a ploy by the West after its sanctions did not affect Moscow. "Sanctions are not enough for the West, they have switched to sabotage. The hopes for using Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine as a nasal spray have come to a halt after it performed poorly in its first clinical tests.

The result has led the scientists to drop the idea of using the spray in its current form, and its device. They hope to develop a more advanced device such as a nebuliser that will deliver the medicine deep into the lungs.

The first trial to assess the efficacy involved 30 people along with 12 who received the spray vaccine as a booster but were not previously vaccinated. As per a report in eBioMedicine, the researchers observed no safety issues, but they found that the vaccine produced weak immune responses.

The researchers further trained to measure levels of mucosal and systematic antibodies after receiving the vaccine in the bloodstream and respiratory system.

It was discovered that very few mucosal antibodies were present after the first dose of the vaccine. A handful was later discovered after the second dose of the vaccine but was rare after those seen in virus infection.

COVID-19: Oxford nasal spray vaccine fails its first clinical test, say researchers

The potential of a nuclear 'Armageddon' is at its greatest point in 60 years, United States President Joe Biden has warned as the Ukraine war drags on. A scenario in which nuclear weapons resulted in global annihilation is known as a nuclear 'Armageddon', also known as a 'nuclear holocaust.'

Nuclear weapons are considered weapons of mass destruction because they have the potential to produce significant radioactive effects. Only twice in history have nuclear weapons been used in actual combat, and both times were in 1945 when the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to finish the Second World War.

As Russia asserted it would employ "all means" at its disposal to defend its borders, Biden claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "not joking." A "precedent" was set by the US utilising nuclear weapons during World War Two, according to Putin.

Analysts, however, contend that rather than indicating a desire to deploy nuclear weapons, Putin's remarks should most likely be taken as a warning to other nations not to intensify their participation in Ukraine.

How many nuclear weapons does Russia possess?

The number of nuclear warheads in Russia is 5,977, according to the Federation of American Scientists, albeit this number includes roughly 1,500 that are decommissioned and scheduled for decommissioning. All nuclear weapon numbers are estimations.

The majority of the 4,500 or so surviving nuclear weapons—ballistic missiles or rockets with long-range targeting capabilities—are regarded as strategic nuclear weapons. These are the weapons that nuclear war is typically linked to.

The remaining nuclear weapons are smaller and less lethal and are intended for close-range combat on land or at sea. But this does not imply that Russia is prepared with thousands of long-range nuclear weapons.

Global comparison

Nine nations possess nuclear weapons: China, France, India, Israel (though not publicly acknowledged), North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, the US, and the UK.

According to experts, 1,500 Russian warheads are currently "deployed," that is, located at missile launchers. The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) has 191 signatories, including China, France, Russia, the US, and the UK.

As per the agreement, they are required to decrease their arsenal of nuclear warheads and, in theory, are devoted to completely eliminating them.

Additionally, it has decreased the number of warheads kept in those nations since the 1970s and 1980s.

India, Israel, and Pakistan did not sign the NPT, and North Korea withdrew in 2003. Despite having nuclear warheads, Israel is the only one of the nine nations to have never openly admitted having a nuclear programme. There is no proof that Ukraine has tried to acquire nuclear weapons, despite President Putin's alleged threats.

What happens if Putin actually uses nuclear weapons?

According to Dr Manisha Chaurasiya, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi University, even in the worst case scenario, wherein Russia actually uses nuclear weapons (which is highly unlikely), it would face not just international condemnation and sanctions, but something much greater than that.

“This would lead to a 'legitimate' response from the international community which would be not anything less than military action. That would be the last thing that Putin would want and Moscow has well in advance warned Western Europe and the United States to not intervene in the Ukraine war,” she adds.

“Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons seem to be empty unless Ukraine attacks Russian city centres or the 'counter value' targets through conventional weapons and thus forces Moscow to actually consider the nuclear weapon use, which again is highly unlikely."

Is Putin in a position to use nukes?

To answer that, Dr Chaurasiya says that Putin is not in a position to use nuclear weapons. “Not because someone is literally stopping him from pressing ‘the button’ but because we know that he is clever enough to not commit a politico-strategic suicide,” she adds.

“Given his experience as a political leader, he is well aware that the ‘use’ of a nuclear weapon would mean surrendering a crucial bargaining chip. Not the actual use but the threat to use nuclear weapons is what has made the nuke game work all through the Cold War. It is a tool of deterrence and a game of strategic brinkmanship. Nuclear weapon use does not benefit Russia in the given scenario in Ukraine.

"Ukraine is a neighbour and the present conflict is primarily about sovereignty over the territory, the disputed provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. The impact of the use of this technology of weapons would certainly fall on Russia as well as the very territories that Russia is aiming to fetch. Thus, it defeats any strategic gain,” continues Dr Chaurasiya.

The extent of nuclear weapons' destruction

Even the tiniest weapon has the potential to result in significant casualties and long-term effects.

In Hiroshima, Japan, during World War Two, a bomb with a 15-kiloton yield may have killed up to 146,000 people. And modern nuclear warheads have a maximum destructive power of 1,000 kilotons.

The immediate area of a nuclear explosion is expected to be relatively inhospitable. An intense flash is followed by a massive fireball and blast wave that can obliterate buildings and other objects for several kilometres.

× × × Additionally, it has decreased the number of warheads kept in those nations since the 1970s and 1980s. “Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons seem to be empty unless Ukraine attacks Russian city centres or the 'counter value' targets through conventional weapons and thus forces Moscow to actually consider the nuclear weapon use, which again is highly unlikely." Is Putin in a position to use nukes? The extent of nuclear weapons' destruction Even the tiniest weapon has the potential to result in significant casualties and long-term effects. In Hiroshima, Japan, during World War Two, a bomb with a 15-kiloton yield may have killed up to 146,000 people. And modern nuclear warheads have a maximum destructive power of 1,000 kilotons. Experts have warned that criminals can make use of heat-detecting cameras to crack passwords. Researchers discovered that these cameras can help crack passwords up to a minute after typing.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow have developed a tool called ThermoSecure System that used thermal images in combination with artificial intelligence to make "informed guesses" of what the password could be, reported Bloomberg.

How often can passwords be cracked?

Two words answer is 'quite often'. The system successfully cracked around 86 per cent of the passwords when a thermal image was clicked within 20 seconds of typing in the secret code or password.

It even successfully cracked long passwords of around 16 characters. However, the success rate for this was lower at 67 per cent.

Shorter passwords had a higher success rate. Up to 12 characters were guessed right on 82 per cent of the tries, eight characters were cracked right on 93 per cent of attempts and six character codes were successfully worked out 100 per cent.

When the time was increased by 10 seconds and the thermal image was clicked in around 30 seconds the success rate dropped to 76 per cent and a further drop to 62 per cent was seen at 60 seconds of typing.

When we touch an object a small part of our body heat is transferred via conduction. Thermal images detect this heat and these areas show up a little bit brighter in the picture.

If a user types in his/her password and leaves the device unguarded, any passerby equipped with a thermal camera can capture an image that reveals the heat signature. This 'thermal attack' can then give away your passwords, codes etc.

Austria is dragging the European Union (EU) to court. Reportedly, the central European country is not happy with the EU's decision to characterise natural gas and nuclear power generation as sustainable energies.

Fans of Apple went gaga over the recent 'Far Out'event which introduced to the masses iPhone14 and "futuristic" specifications like its much-touted "Crash Detection" feature.

However, in the next few weeks, several issues have been reported with these specs. The latest as per a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report casts doubt on the efficacy of the safety feature which is supposed to help emergency services reach users ASAP in case of an accident or crash.

The report details a recent "roller coaster ride" of an incident at an amusement park in Cincinnati.

A woman's iPhone 14 alerted the authorities of a crash as she enjoyed a ride. The phone's new car-crash detection was triggered as she "enjoyed getting hoisted 109 feet in the air and whipped around at over 50 mph".

The phone placed a 911 call to the Warren County Communications Center with an automated voice message which said “The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.”

It also picked up the background audio from the amusement park; hoots, cheers, music and adrenaline-fueled people having fun.

As per the 911 report, an emergency response team was sent to the location but they couldn't locate any emergency. The iPhone user realised the whole thing and called the emergency services back to tell them that she is okay. Ironically she reassured them that she hasn't been in a car crash from the line for 'bumper cars'.

While the incident is in a certain way hilarious, it also raises the question of how dependable the feature is. There would be nothing funny about receiving an alert that your loved one has been in a crash, only to discover that they were having fun at a fair or amusement park and just forgot to answer their phone.

This is not to say that the emergency call is placed undetected by the user. The feature uses a combination of sensor data to assess a potential crash. If detected, it shows a message on the screen for ten seconds, following which a ten-second countdown happens, accompanied by an alarm.

Only after this countdown, emergency services are contacted. A message is also sent to your emergency contact.

However, as the incident demonstrates you sometimes forget to check your phone.

The false alarms can be scary and they will grow in number as more people buy the new model of iPhone. It has to be acknowledged that technology can make mistakes, for it the difference between a deadly crash and a thrilling ride might be non-existent.

In spite of that, there have already been multiple cases where the feature was literally a lifesaver, in one it alerted authorities to a deadly accident where a car crashed into a tree. The crash had no witnesses and without the alert, the user might have perished.

Even if scary or irritating this feature has saved lives and will continue to do so, one can only hope that Apple will soon launch an update fixing this "bug".

In what comes as a bizarre incident, a California resident in the USA has sued a hot sauce company with Texas in its name after learning the sauce wasn't made in the state of Texas. Reportedly, a man named Philip White bought a bottle of Texas Pete hot sauce for about $3 at a local supermarket in California in September 2021, thinking the product was made in the Lone Star state. However, upon learning that the sauce was made in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, an angry White filed a class action lawsuit last month. Under the lawsuit filed at the Los Angeles federal court, White is demanding that the company pay for the damages and simultaneously, change its name and branding. According to local reports, Texas Pete has time till November 10 to respond to the complaint. "By way of its false marketing and labeling, [Texas Pete] knowingly and intentionally capitalizes on consumers’ desire to partake in the culture and authentic cuisine of one of the most prideful states in America," alleged White in the complaint. White also argued that despite the back label stating the product is manufactured in North Caolina, a consumer would most likely not notice it. "If a consumer conducted an extremely close review of the Products’ back labels, nothing would overcome the reasonable impression given by the front label that the Products are indeed made in Texas," alleged White. While White alleges that the company misled him by the name, Texas Pete Sauce company on its website, in a rather transparent manner has laid down the history of why the sauce made in North Carolina was named Texas Pete. "Legend has it that, when Sam Garner and his three sons, Thad, Ralph and Harold, were trying to come up with a brand name for this spicy new sauce they had created, a marketing advisor suggested the name “Mexican Joe” to connote the piquant flavor reminiscent of the favorite foods of our neighbors to the south," reads the about section of the website. "Then he glanced at son Harold, whose nickname was “Pete” and the Texas Pete cowboy was born," added the company. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Reportedly, Hungary and EU hopeful Serbia are planning to construct a pipeline between the two countries so that Russian oil from the southern Druzhba pipeline, also called the Friendship pipeline can be supplied to Serbia via Hungary. Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs took to Twitter to make the announcement and cited the new sanctions imposed as one of the main reasons that necessitated the new arrangement. "@avucic and PM Orbán have agreed to build an oil pipeline to Hungary. The new oil pipeline would enable Serbia to be supplied with cheaper Urals crude oil, connecting to the Friendship oil pipeline," tweeted Kovacs "At present, the country's oil supply is largely via a pipeline through Croatia, but this is unlikely to be possible in the future because of the sanctions that have been adopted," he added. 1/2 @avucic and PM Orbán have agreed to build an oil pipeline to Hungary.
