At least 85 people are estimated to have lost their lives when an overloaded boat capsized in a flood-swollen river in Nigeria's Anambra, reports AFP quoting President Muhammadu Buhari.

"The boat reportedly carrying 85 persons capsized following rising floods in the Ogbaru area of the state, with emergency services confirming a death toll of 76," said Buhari's office.

"The water level is very high and too risky for a smooth search and rescue operation," said the southeast coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Thickman Tanimu while talking to AFP.

Tesla Inc is starting semi-electric commercial truck production and PepsiCo Inc will get the first deliveries on Dec. 1, the electric vehicle maker's chief Elon Musk tweeted on Thursday.

When Musk unveiled the prototype of the futuristic, battery-powered Semi in 2017, he said the Class 8 truck would go into production by 2019.

However, the timeline has been pushed multiple times due to part shortages and Musk said the production would be delayed to next year. In August, he announced the planned production of the truck.

In another tweet, Musk reiterated that the vehicle has a range of 500 miles (805 km). It was not immediately clear how many semi trucks the electric vehicle maker plans to produce.

The truck is expected to cost $180,000, although it would qualify for a tax break of up to $40,000 under a US subsidy programme approved by the Senate.

Back in 2017, PepsiCo reserved 100 of Tesla's semi electric trucks as it sought to reduce fuel costs and fleet emissions.

In an interview with CNBC last year, PepsiCo's top boss Ramon Laguarta had said transportation accounted for 10 per cent of the company's gas emissions.

The maker of Mountain Dew soda and Doritos chips had previously said it aims to use the trucks to ship snack foods and beverages between manufacturing and distribution centres as well as to retailers.

PepsiCo did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment.

A little more than a month after a dangerous TikTok trend led to indiscriminate stealing of cars in the US, particularly of the Hyundai and Kia car models, the city of St Louis in Missouri is planning to sue the carmakers for it. Reportedly, the city has seen a huge uptick in car thefts in the past few months and the city leadership is now threatening lawsuits against the two companies for making cars that have certain defects which make it easier to steal them than other cars. "With this letter, the city demands that Kia and Hyundai mitigate the defective conditions providing thieves, including teenagers as young as 13 – the instrumentalities by which they are destroying property, endangering city drivers and themselves, and, in some cases, committing violent felonies," read a letter written by City Counselor Sheena Hamilton. "Kia and Hyundai’s defective vehicles have caused a public safety crisis in the city, endangering the health, safety, and peace of all those who live, work or visit the city. Your companies bear the responsibility to mitigate the public nuisance your negligence has created for the city and its residents," read the letter further. Up until last month, 2,409 Hyundais and Kias had been reported stolen compared to just 205 at the same time last year which is an increase of 1,075 per cent. India's tech behemoth Infosys is currently embroiled in a legal tussle in the USA. Reportedly, the Bengaluru-based company has been accused of discrimination in its hiring process based on age, gender and nationality. A US court rejected the motion brought by Infosys to quash the complaint of former employee Jill Prejean who claimed that the company asked her to avoid hiring candidates of Indian origin, women with children and those above 50 years old. Prejan was a former Vice President of Talent Acquisition with Infosys and she made the claims before the United States District Court for the southern district of New York. In her complaint, she pointed to former senior VP and head of consulting Mark Livingston, and former partners Dan Albright and Jerry Kurtz as the ones who created a hostile work environment and enforced discriminatory hiring policies. A day after the US announced sweeping export controls on advanced, high-performance computing chips, China has lashed out and criticised Washington for its malicious block. “Out of the need to maintain its sci-tech hegemony, the US abuses export control measures to maliciously block and suppress Chinese companies,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning. “It will not only damage the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, but also affect American companies’ interests,” she added. As reported by WION, the US on Friday tightened export controls to cut off China from specific chips produced anywhere in the globe using American machinery, greatly extending its reach in an effort to halt Beijing's scientific and military advancements. It has been barely a few weeks since the Liz Truss government took charge in the UK but looks like the wheels are already coming off. Currently, in a major economic crisis, the UK will need to cut as many as 200,000 government jobs in the next two years to avoid saddling the exchequer with billions in debt, per a report by Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). The think tank said that the government will have to find a way to pay nearly $5.6 billion of savings to the workforce this year, accounting for the public sector wages that are set to increase by five per cent. It added that over 100,00 job cuts will ensure that the wage bill remains unchanged, at least for this year. However, it added the caveat that if inflation continues to increase at the current pace, the UK government might have to go on another spree and slash the workforce by another 100,000. Notably, during the pandemic, the public sector workforce of the UK grew by a quarter of a million to 5.5 million. Thus, the government is already looking to tone down the bureaucracy and cut nearly a fifth of the headcount which could essentially save $3.8 billion. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday appeared in front of a special court in connection with a money laundering case to the tune of $72 million (16 billion Pakistani rupees) and pleaded his innocence.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday appeared in front of a special court in connection with a money laundering case to the tune of $72 million (16 billion Pakistani rupees) and pleaded his innocence. “I never committed a single penny of corruption nor received any kickbacks in any project during my tenure as the chief minister of Punjab. During my tenure, I would give up my salary and other perks amounting to ₹100 million,” said Shehbaz during the hearing. The hearing is taking place at a Special Court in Lahore which has granted pre-arrest bails to Shehbaz and his son Hamza while Suleman, who lives in Britain, has been declared a proclaimed offender in the case. Amjad Pervaiz, the counsel of the Pakistan PM argued in front of the court that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had removed $40 million from the initial chargesheet after failing to gather any proof. The court, however, adjourned the hearing till October 11. As reported extensively by WION, 70-year-old Shehbaz, and his sons Hamza, 47, and Suleman, 40, were booked in November 2020 by the FIA under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act. According to the FIA report submitted in the court, the probe team had "detected 28 benami accounts of the Shehbaz family through which money laundering of Rs 16.3bn was committed during 2008-18. The FIA examined the money trail of 17,000 credit transactions." Besides, the special court also issued show-cause notices to the officials of different banks for not adhering to an earlier order over the attachment of the accounts owned by two other proclaimed offenders. After announcing a policy change under which users might have been fined $2500 for spreading misinformation, PayPal on Saturday backtracked on its decision, citing clerical error. The fintech company said the policy update that went out to users was an 'error' and that the company apologised for creating any confusion. “An AUP notice recently went out in error that included incorrect information. PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy. Our teams are working to correct our policy pages. We’re sorry for the confusion this has caused,” it said. Earlier, in the updated acceptable use policy, which has since been deleted, PayPal asserted that the new policy will kick in from November 3. The company added that it was expanded its existing list of prohibited activities to include the “sending, posting, or publication of messages, content, or materials that meet certain criteria.” "You may not use the PayPal service for activities that involve the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials that, in PayPal’s sole discretion promote misinformation," read the notification.
