Vodafone is planning to make its biggest round of job cuts in five years as the British telecom group seeks to rein in costs and revive its lagging performance, according to Reuters, quoting a Financial Times report.

Vodafone is looking to shed several hundred jobs, most of which will be at its headquarters in London.

In November, the company said it would cut over $1 billion in costs by 2026 after it announced that the group's profits had slipped in the year's first half.

Vodafone employs about 104,000 workers globally, including 9,400 in the UK.

The last few tough years have led to a sharp drop in the valuations of some of the leading telecom groups.

That includes British Telecom and Vodafone in the UK, Telefónica in Spain and Orange in France.

Vodafone's business in India has also been under pressure over the last few years, despite the government converting a large part of the company's debt into equity and staring at an uncertain future.

Reuters had reported earlier this month the loss-making Vodafone Idea, the Indian arm of the company, had asked local banks for at least $846 million in emergency liquidity. Domestic banks, though, were hesitant to offer new loans.

To continue operating, the corporation needs money.

But before providing the indebted operator with additional funding, the lenders will hold off until either a capital increase by its major shareholders — the UK-based Vodafone Group and the regional investor Aditya Birla Group — or a debt-to-equity conversion by the government, according to sources who spoke to Reuters.

"Without that (capital injection), it looks difficult for the company to...survive," a top official at a state-owned bank told Reuters.

Wisconsin and North Carolina on Thursday banned the use of TikTok on government-owned devices over cyber security concerns. The ban on the use of the Chinese app in the United States has widened. A few days back, New Jersey, Arkansas and Ohio banned the app, adding their names along with over 20 more states.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signing the order of ban said, "In the digital age, defending our state’s technology and cybersecurity infrastructure and protecting digital privacy have to be a top priority for us as a state."

The state governor added that along with banning the Chinese social media app, he is also banning vendors, products, and services from nine companies, including Huawei Technologies, Tencent Holdings, and ZTE Corporation, Reuters reported.

While Roy Cooper, North Carolina's governor signed an order directing the officials to develop a policy with 14 days to prohibit the use of Chinese apps including TikTok, and WeChat.

The call to ban TikTok was fuelled after Christopher Wray, the FBI director in November last year said that the app poses a national security threat. Wray also said that through the app, the Chinese government can influence users or control their devices.

In response to this, the social media app said that it's "disappointed that so many states are jumping on the political bandwagon to enact policies that will do nothing to advance cybersecurity in their states and are based on unfounded falsehoods about TikTok."

Embattled crypto trader and co-founder of FTX Sam Bankman-Fried on Thursday in a blog post laid bare his side of the issue and said he did not 'steal' the funds.

Embattled crypto trader and co-founder of FTX Sam Bankman-Fried on Thursday in a blog post laid bare his side of the issue and said he did not 'steal' the funds. "I didn’t steal funds, and I certainly didn’t stash billions away. Nearly all of my assets were and still are utilisable to backstop FTX customers," wrote Bankman-Fried in the highly unusual post. The former billionaire said Alameda collapsed because it failed to hedge against an 'extreme' crash in the crypto markets. "Alameda failed to sufficiently hedge its market exposure. Over the course of 2022, a series of large broad market crashes came–in stocks and in crypto–leading to a ~80% decrease in the market value of its assets." The 30-year-old also added that he had a lot more to say on the topic but this was a start. "I have a lot more to say about why Alameda failed to hedge, what happened with FTX US, what led to the Chapter 11 process, S&C, and more. But at least this is a start." With a court trial pending, most people would have been advised by their lawyers to keep a low profile and refrain from talking. However, Bankman-Fried in the lengthy post maintained his innocence and said he could help undo the damage. With Bankman-Fried pleading not guilty, the stage is set for a court trial which is expected to begin in October, according to federal judge Lewis Kaplan. Coldiretti in a statement said, "The green light from the European Union for alarmist wine labels in Ireland represents a dangerous precedent as it risks opening the door to other legislation capable of negatively influencing consumer choices." It added, "It is completely improper to equate the excessive consumption of spirits, typical of the Nordic countries, to the moderate and conscious consumption of quality products with lower alcohol content, such as beer and wine."
