The Caribbean country of Sint Maarten has approved a controversial plan to cull the entire population of vervet monkeys, a species that has been labelled as a “nuisance” by locals on the Dutch island. However, critics of the plan suggest that instead of killing, sterilisation or neutering might be a better way to handle the rising numbers of the monkey species.

The plan to kill hundreds of monkeys comes after farmer complaints that the invasive species were “raiding their crops and destroying their livelihood,” reports Guardian.

Sint Maarten to capture and kill entire population of vervet monkeys. Here's why

Ambulance services were pressed into action at Sydney airport as part of an "emergency response" to a Qantas flight carrying more than 100 passengers.

The plane has now reportedly landed safely at the Sydney airport. As per the airline, all 145 passengers disembarked normally when the plane landed in Sydney around 3.30 pm local time (0430 GMT).

Initially, in a statement to the press, an ambulance service spokesperson had revealed that "paramedics have been called," for Qantas Flight QF144 from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia.

As per a report by Australia’s Channel Nine television news, there were "reports of an engine failure". The aircraft is a Boeing 737-800, a twin-engine plane, which means it can land safely with just one engine.

The flight as per an AFP report had issued a mid-air 'mayday' alert while flying over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand.

As per the Australian government's aviation regulator, a mayday call indicates that "an aircraft is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance". However, as per a Reuters report quoting a Qantas spokesperson, the grave danger signal was downgraded to "Possible Assistance Needed" before landing.

Qantas said that "while in-flight engine shutdowns are rare, and would naturally be concerning for passengers, our pilots are trained to manage them safely and aircraft are designed to fly for an extended period on one engine."

Reuters reports that passengers aboard the flight while talking to local media talked of hearing a loud bang mid-flight. However, they said they hadn't realised there was a problem until the pilot made an announcement on landing.

Archaeologists have found a flat, square block of a brownish runestone in Norway and claimed it to be the world's oldest, with inscriptions dating back to almost 2,000 years. The stone is 31 cm by 32 cm (12.2 inches by 12.3 inches). The Museum of Cultural History in Oslo said that this runestone might be the earliest example of words recorded in writing in Scandinavia. It said that this brown runestone is among "the oldest runic inscriptions ever found" and is the oldest datable in the world, AP reported.

Kristel Zilmer, a professor at the University of Oslo said, "This find will give us a lot of knowledge about the use of runes in the early iron age. This may be one of the first attempts to use runes in Norway and Scandinavia on stone."

The runestone was initially found in late December 2021 during an excavation of a grave near Tyrifjord, in West Oslo, but is being announced now because the team needed time to analyse and date it, added Zilmer.

The stone has several types of inscriptions but does not make all linguistic sense.

Other items in the cremation pit included burned bones, and charcoal, indicating that it might have been inscribed between AD1 and AD250.

Zilmer called the discovery as the "most sensational thing" that she has had as an academic.

The sheer weight of inflation that Britons are facing has been made clear by the latest figures. Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that even as inflation reached double digits, wages are lagging far behind. As per a Daily Mail report, even though earnings have risen at near-record rates, in real terms wages have plummeted in the three months to November.

Over the three months, pay overall rose by 6.4 per cent in cash terms; 7.2 per cent for the private sector and 3.3 per cent for the public sector.

Compared to the CPI or Consumer Price Index, the above-mentioned time period reportedly saw pay tumble by 3.9 per cent; which is the biggest fall since 2009. Regular pay also saw a 3.8 per cent fall.

Apart from this, unemployment in the country rose by 0.2 points. From 3.5 per cent in the previous quarter to 3.7 per cent. As per ONS, this was largely due to older people returning to work and younger ones joining the workforce.

However, the latest figures show that the number of people out of work for up to six months and those unemployed for a period between six to 12 months saw an increase. For the former, the numbers were driven by people aged 16 to 24 years.

As per ONS director of economic statistics Darren Morgan, “Vacancies fell again, though remaining at very high levels, with the number of people looking for work broadly in line with the number of jobs being advertised”

Streaming platform Netflix is set to record its slowest quarterly revenue growth this Thursday as its ad-supported plan struggles to attract customers in the saturating US market.

The situation pressures the company to pull back on content spending this year.

Due to the rising costs and difficulty in financing production, Netflix has already been reeling under the strained customer base.

Increased competition from platforms such as Disney+ and Amazon Prime has also added to the stress on the streaming conglomerate.

Netflix had pinned its hopes on the launch of an ad-supported plan but has severely missed the mark, as there has not been any significant increase in subscribers.

The $6.99 per month ad-supported plan only has access to some titles, driving the budget higher for several users and resulting in lower subscription numbers.

Netflix has already suffered hefty losses as subscribers gave up their membership in the first six months of 2022 due to the weakening state of the global economy.

Netflix attracted 4.5 million customers in the fourth quarter, which would be the smallest number for the Christmas season since 2014, compared to 8.3 million subscribers it gained the year before.

The company's stock has dropped nearly 50 per cent, with revenues expected to fall short of the previous quarter's collection, only a 1.7 per cent increase to $7.84 billion, the lowest since it went public in 2022.

But a separate report showed for one of its private jets, Netflix is employing a flight attendant, with the chosen candidate earning up to $385,000 annually.

An advert said, "the Netflix Aviation department provides exceptional, safe, and confidential air transportation".

Tesla is in trouble. A 2016 video by Tesla showcasing its self-driving technology came into question after a senior engineer's testimony claimed the video was staged.

The video, still available on Tesla's website, shows a car navigating itself while the driver is seen "not doing anything." Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, touted the video, which is still stored on the company's website, on Twitter in October 2016 as proof that "Tesla drives itself."

However, Ashok Elluswamy, the Director of Tesla's Autopilot Software, said in a deposition the video doesn't accurately portray what was seen.

The engineer detailed how the video was produced and said the car seen parking itself had crashed into the fence at the parking lot when the driver wasn't present.

The video was staged to promote Tesla's self-driving technology to demonstrate features that the system lacked, such as the ability to accelerate at a green light and stop at a red one, said the engineer.

The deposition was taken as part of a lawsuit against Tesla over a 2018 Silicon Valley freeway crash that killed an Apple engineer.

Elon Musk's attempts to promote the self-driving features of Tesla have backfired, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating whether the car makers' "full-self driving" feature might be the cause of several accidents.
