The United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been fined for not wearing a seatbelt in a moving car. The Lancashire Police, without specifying the name, said that it had issued a fixed penalty with a conditional offer to a 42-year-old man from London, BBC reported.

A video that was posted on Thursday, went viral when netizens spotted the prime minister without a seatbelt. He was in Lancashire.

The British Prime Minister had filmed a social media video in a moving car without a seatbelt on and was fined for the legal breach.

“Following the circulation of a video on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seat belt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire we have today (Friday, January 20) issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty,” Lancashire Police said in a statement.

On Thursday, Sunak apologised for a “brief error of judgment” in removing his seatbelt to film a video while driving in north-west England.

“That was a brief error of judgement. The PM removed his seatbelt to film a small clip. He fully accepts this was a mistake and apologises about it,” Sunak's spokesperson said.
“The Prime Minister believes everyone should wear a seatbelt,” he added.

The United States Supreme Court after its eight-month investigation failed to identify the culprit who leaked its ruling overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

The leaked draft was published on May 02, by Politico, which sparked an internal crisis at the court, prompting abortion rights rallies and political crisis outside the houses of the nine justices and around the country, Reuters reported.

Without confirming the source of the leak, the probe headed by the court's chief security officer Gail Curley said that around 97 employees were interviewed and confessed to disclosure.

The 20-page detailed investigation report claimed that some 82 court employees and few justices had access to virtual and hard copies of the draft opinion authored by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, which was although different from what was announced on June 24. It was also found that few employees spoke to their spouses and partners about the draft opinion.

The report found no evidence to identify the culprit after examining court computer devices, networks, printers and available calls and log texts.

Scientists have recently discovered a new emperor penguin colony, using satellite images in one of the most remote and inaccessible regions in Antarctica, says a Guardian report. The colony around the coastline of Antarctica is estimated to be home to about 500 birds, which makes a total of 66 known emperor penguin colonies, half of which have been discovered by space satellites.

Dr Peter Fretwell of the British Antarctic Survey and the lead of the research, said, "This is an exciting discovery. [But] like many of the recently discovered sites, this colony is small and in a region badly affected by recent sea ice loss."

Emperor penguins are special because they are the only ones that breed on sea ice, rather than land They are located in regions that are very difficult to spot and study as they are remote, inaccessible and can witness temperatures as low as −60ºC.

According to the British Antarctica Survey (BAS), for the past 15 years, scientists have been looking for new colonies using satellite imagery for brown ‘guano stains’ (penguin poo) on the ice.

The last colony that was spotted was at Verleger Point, in west Antarctica. It was discovered on the basis of images from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission and was later confirmed on high-resolution images from the Maxar WorldView-3 satellite.

During breeding, these penguins need the ice to last between April and September to give their chicks time to grow to make them particularly vulnerable to climate breakdown.

Scientists have recently discovered a new emperor penguin colony, using satellite images in one of the most remote and inaccessible regions in Antarctica, says a Guardian report.

[But] like many of the recently discovered sites, this colony is small and in a region badly affected by recent sea ice loss." Emperor penguins are special because they are the only ones that breed on sea ice, rather than land They are located in regions that are very difficult to spot and study as they are remote, inaccessible and can witness temperatures as low as −60ºC. Watch | WION Climate Tracker: Emperor penguins at risk of extinction; reproductive cycle impacted According to the British Antarctica Survey (BAS), for the past 15 years, scientists have been looking for new colonies using satellite imagery for brown ‘guano stains’ (penguin poo) on the ice. Sebastian Korda stunned two-time losing finalist Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open on Friday, adding the Russian to a growing list of top seeds crashing out early.

The 31st-ranked American, son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, blasted past the seventh seed 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Rod Laver Arena to race into the last 16.

Korda's upset teed up a clash with Polish 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz who battled past Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 - for a place in the quarter-finals.

"An unbelievable match, I sort of knew what I had to do and I stuck with it even when I was going up and down with the emotions," said the 22-year-old Korda, adding that his game plan was "just go for it".

Medvedev was a losing finalist at the last two Australian Opens, to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then in a demoralising five-set defeat 12 months ago against Rafael Nadal after leading by two sets.

He was attempting to become only the fourth man in the Open era to reach three consecutive Melbourne Park finals after Djokovic, Mats Wilander, and Ivan Lendl.

But that quest is now over as he joined defending champion Nadal, second seed Casper Ruud and eighth seed Taylor Fritz as high-profile first-week casualties at the season-opening Grand Slam.

Korda displayed his credentials when he pushed Djokovic to the brink in the Adelaide International final this month, earning a championship point before the Serb rallied to win in three close sets.

The Florida native bounced back to claim a pair of victories in Melbourne against Cristian Garin and Yosuke Watanuki before meeting former world number one Medvedev.

Korda started aggressively, earning four break points in an 11-minute opening game before putting one away to take an early edge.

The Russian had minor treatment on his right hand at the changeover before Korda consolidated for 2-0.

The American dominated from the baseline in some lung-busting rallies and broke again for 4-1 before the Russian came roaring back with two breaks to level it up at 4-4.

The dancers' futuristic headgear glints under the lights at a top ballet show, but just two months ago their plastic costumes were sticky bottles tossed into a Tokyo recycling bin. "Plastic", a new production by renowned Japanese company K-BALLET, aims to draw attention to a global pollution crisis through some unusual sets and wardrobe designs.

Tutus made from used bubble wrap, four huge recycled bottle walls and 100 transparent umbrellas left behind in the Japanese capital all feature in the performance, which drew a full house to its first short run in Yokohama.

Resembling space-age creatures with hand-cleaned PET bottles strapped to their bodies, a troupe including US guest star Julian MacKay leapt and spun their way through a shifting labyrinth on stage.

Plastic waste has doubled globally in 20 years and only nine per cent is successfully recycled, according to the OECD group of developed countries.

The United Nations says the volume of plastic entering the oceans will nearly triple by 2040.

MacKay, 25, told AFP that the "huge problem" of plastic waste "really hasn't gotten that spotlight" in the dance world, and he believes performing arts can help inspire people to act.

"When you take a medium like ballet or dance, and you add it together with recycling or upcycling, you kind of force people to think, 'Well, what else can I do, what else works?'."

Back in November, past midnight in Tokyo's Harajuku fashion district, K-BALLET's chief producer Taiju Takano and scenographer Naoya Sakata went rooting through recycling bins to find their plastic props.

Joining staff from waste management company Shirai Eco Centre, they shook out tubs and sorted plastic bottles from piles of used coffee cups, aluminium cans and cigarette butts.

Sakata also used machine-recycled PET bottles provided by Shirai to construct the pixel-like bottle walls and huge letters that descended to spell "party people" in the upbeat finale of the show’s first half.

Overall, more than 10,000 recycled and reused bottles were used in "Plastic", and 28-year-old Sakata said it made him realise the amount thrown away each day is "shocking".

Single-use plastic remains a huge problem in Japan, where even individual pieces of fruit frequently come packaged.

But Japan’s residents generate only a third of the plastic waste their American counterparts do, according to the OECD, and less than the average for the organisation’s European members.

Japan also collects and recycles more plastic than many countries, although often for "thermal recycling" where waste is burned for energy.

Takano, 27, said some elements of "Plastic" are intended to evoke old Japanese ideas of sustainability.

"A key word in our culture is 'mottainai'," which describes what a shame it is to waste things, he told AFP.

In the past, it was believed the spirit of an object "would appear as a ghost if you mistreated things and threw them away", he said.

MacKay said the stage design helped him see the plastic items in a different way.

"There's a certain kind of beauty... when light goes through these bottles and creates something that looks almost heavenly," he said.

K-BALLET plans to keep its costumes and props for at least a year, with the hope of re-staging the show, after which Shirai will recycle the bottles.

As audience members filed out of the auditorium, Ayumi Kisaki, a 30-year-old actor, said the performance made her reflect on the problem.

"It's an issue I don't usually think about. But these dancers highlighting the issue of plastic helped me think of it as my own issue to tackle," she told AFP.

US wireless carrier, T-Mobile, announced on Thursday that it was looking into a data breach affecting 37 million postpaid and prepaid accounts and anticipated high costs due to the incident, according to a Reuters report.

T-Mobile is the third-largest wireless carrier in the United States, with over 110 million members.

The business said it discovered fraudulent activity on January 5 and stopped it in a day and that no sensitive data, including financial information, was compromised.

Nevertheless, some client data was gathered, including names, billing addresses, emails, and phone numbers of T-Mobile customers.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has also launched an investigation into the company's data leak.

"Our investigation is still ongoing, but the malicious activity appears to be fully contained at this time, and there is currently no evidence that the bad actor was able to breach or compromise our systems or our network," said the company.

While Reuters reported FCC or T-Mobile did not respond to a request for comment, the company's stock fell 2 per cent after market close.

Earlier this month, The Polish division of T-Mobile had been charged by the regulator for misleading advertisements about a free mobile data offer. The company might be fined 10 per cent of its annual revenue if found guilty.

The slogan "1200 GB free for a year" from T-Mobile Polska was inaccurate, according to UOKiK, the Polish regulator.
UOKik said 100 GB Internet packages are given each month for a maximum of 12 months as long as the customer regularly renews the deal for a price of at least $7.99.

"After reading the advertisement, the consumer should have a general, but the realistic, idea of the presented offer," the head of UOKiK Tomasz Chrostny said in a statement, according to a Reuters report.

"The T-Mobile promotional slogan may suggest receiving a one-time data package of 1200 GB, and not a dozen or so smaller packages, provided that the fee is paid periodically," added the UoKik head.

But the campaign, according to T-Mobile's Polish unit, was warmly accepted by customers and had a pay-as-you-go offer construction.

"Nevertheless, if, in the opinion of UOKiK, the communication in the offer was not clear enough, we are ready to improve it to ensure the satisfaction of as many customers as possible," reported Reuters, quoting the company's statement.

"In the coming days, we will provide UOKiK with materials related to the promotion of the offer, and we will cooperate with the office to improve the communication of the offer to one that leaves no doubt as to its terms."

India: Ice cricket tournament organised in North Kashmir, amid cold temperature

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday said that he wished he could cut taxes but the current public finances are not in favourable condition.

Sunak said that the pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine had left the state of public finances "not where it needs to be."

He said that people are 'not idiots' and will understand why the immediate tax cuts are unaffordable.

As per media reports earlier this week the UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, is planning to "slim down' the budget in March with no immediate tax cuts.

During a Q&A session in Morecambe, Sunak said that when he was a chancellor he 'preferred it when the prime minister didn't comment on the tax policies.'

Assuring people on taxes, he said, "I am a Conservative. I want to cut your taxes, of course I do, because you all work incredibly hard and I want you to keep more of your money so you can spend it on the stuff that you want to."

He added, "trust me, that’s what I’m going to do for you this year, that’s what we’re going to do while I’m prime minister and if we do those things we will be able to cut your taxes."

Meanwhile, when the decision not to cut taxes was revealed, things didn't go well with Conservative MPs.

After Sunak's remarks, various MPs privately said that they were surprised at the language.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday said that he wished he could cut taxes but the current public finances are not in favourable condition. Sunak said that the pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine had left the state of public finances "not where it needs to be." He said that people are 'not idiots' and will understand why the immediate tax cuts are unaffordable. During a Q&A session in Morecambe, Sunak said that when he was a chancellor he 'preferred it when the prime minister didn't comment on the tax policies.' Assuring people on taxes, he said, "I am a Conservative. I want to cut your taxes, of course I do, because you all work incredibly hard and I want you to keep more of your money so you can spend it on the stuff that you want to." He added, "trust me, that’s what I’m going to do for you this year, that’s what we’re going to do while I’m prime minister and if we do those things we will be able to cut your taxes." Meanwhile, when the decision not to cut taxes was revealed, things didn't go well with Conservative MPs. After Sunak's remarks, various MPs privately said that they were surprised at the language. A rare theft scene has gone viral in India where a group of robbers posing as telecom company employees uprooted a 29-foot-long mobile tower in Patna's Sabzibagh and took off. The incident has left cops red-faced and local residents in worry, TOI reported.

It came to the limelight after technicians of the telecom company, while conducting a survey of mobile towers and 5G services found their network and its equipment missing.

The tower worth thousands of dollars was installed on the roof of a four-storey house belonging to a man named Shaheen Qayoom.

A case was filed against the unknown group after Mohammad Shahnanawa Anwar, the area manager of GTL told police that a mobile tower is missing. The case was filed under Section 379 of the IPC.

As of now, no clear ground regarding the culprits has yet been established.

The SHO, Sabihul Haque said that the tower was installed in 2006 by Aircel but in 2016 the company sold the tower to GTL.

It’s been months since China’s Zhurong Mars rover entered a “hibernation” to wait out the cold and harsh winter on planet Mars’ northern hemisphere and its alien landscape. However, the slumber which was planned to end in December of last year still continues. Now the question is, will the rover ever wake up? There’s still hope.

What is Zhurong?

Zhurong is part of Tianwen 1, China’s ambitious Mars mission, and the nation’s first interplanetary mission. The mission, which includes a Mars rover, touched down on the Red Planet’s Utopian Planitia in May of the year 2021.

Watch | This study suggests ancient Mars was also hit by climate change

Why is a rover ‘sleeping’?

Following its landing, it conducted a range of scientific and exploration activities before retreating into a so-called hibernation or dormant state to survive the barren planet’s winter, during which, as per space.com, temperatures can fall down to minus 195 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 125 degrees Celsius).

It went to sleep on May 18 of last year.

What conditions are needed for it to wake up?

Talking to reporters in September 2022, Jia Yang, a Tianwen 1 mission deputy chief designer, revealed that Zhurong would wake up by itself when two conditions are met: it can generate energy greater than 140 watts and the planet’s temperature, or rather the region where the rover is, reaches the somewhat warmer, 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius).

When was it supposed to rise up again?

Zhurong slumber was expected to end in December when the red planet experiences its spring equinox. However, this did not happen. So far, it’s just silence.

What went wrong?

As per a January 9 report by Space News, China’s first interplanetary mission may be in trouble “with the rover potentially lost on the surface after winter hibernation”. There is also speculation that maybe the temperatures just aren’t warm enough.

What is the temperature on Mars currently?

As per NASA’s Perseverance Rover, which is also wandering Mars’s surface, the temperature in the planet’s Jezero Crater has only briefly risen higher than Zhurong’s lowest heat requirement.

But given that Perseverance is nearer to the red planet’s equator - located around seven degrees latitude south of its Chinese counterpart - it may be experiencing slightly more favourable conditions than Zhurong.

How is Perseverance awake?

NASA's 2020 rover Perseverance, meanwhile, is not asleep. It is nuclear-powered and doesn’t need to hibernate.

What else could be plaguing the Chinese rover?

Zhurong generates its power using solar arrays. Mars is known for its sand storms and there is concern that the dust from them may be hindering the rover and its solar arrays’ ability to generate power.

While Zhurong’s panels are made using anti-dust material and it has a vibration setting to shake off the dust, even that feature requires some power. The rover has to be active to “shake it off”.

What now?

The rover's mission with which China achieved the status of being the second country to reach the surface of Mars is already a great success.

But only time can tell if it will wake up to achieve bigger and better things.
