In May 2023, India's retail sales of electric two-wheelers reached a new peak at 104,755 units, marking a 57 per cent increase compared to April 2023, which saw 66,724 units sold. This translates to an average of 3,379 electric two-wheelers sold per day last month. This is the first time, the sale of two-wheeler EVs&nbsp;topped 100,000 units.

These figures are based on end-of-day sales data from the government's Vahan website as of May 31.&nbsp;The record-breaking sales surpassed the previous high of 85,452 units in March 2023 by a significant margin of 19,303 units. This is despite the fact that in April, sales experienced a 22 per cent decline in April 2023 compared to the previous month.

<h2>What is driving the sale surge?</h2>

The surge in retail sales in May, particularly in the last week of the month, as per Auto Car Pro can be attributed to the Indian government's May 22nd decision to revise the subsidy under the FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &amp;) Electric Vehicles) Scheme.&nbsp;

The subsidy was reduced to Rs 10,000 per kilowatt per hour (kWh) from the previous Rs 15,000/kWh, and the incentive cap was lowered to 15 per cent of the two-wheeler EV's ex-factory price, down from the previous 40 per cent. This 37.5 per cent reduction in incentives resulted in higher vehicle prices starting from June 1, prompting value-conscious buyers to make their purchases earlier.

Between May 23 and May 31, a total of 57,917 electric two-wheelers were sold, indicating a rush of new purchases in the last eight days of May.&nbsp;

<h2>Which companies sold the most unit?</h2>

Among the leading OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), only three out of the top 25 experienced a decline in sales month-on-month.

Market leaders Ola Electric, TVS Motor Co, Ather Energy, and Bajaj Auto achieved their best-ever monthly sales figures.&nbsp;

- Ola Electric sold 28,438 units, surpassing its previous high of 21,991 units in April 2023.&nbsp;

- TVS Motor Co's iQube crossed the 20,000-unit mark with 20,253 units sold.&nbsp;

- Ather Energy achieved a new monthly high of 15,256 units.&nbsp;

- Bajaj Auto saw a remarkable 168 per cent increase in sales to 9,910 units, securing the fourth position for the first time.

These four OEMs, along with Ampere Vehicles, accounted for 83,475 units of the total 104,755 EVs sold in May, representing 80 per cent of the market share. Additionally, seven other OEMs achieved four-figure sales.

<h2>Will the sales sustain over time?</h2>

Looking ahead, the reduced FAME II subsidy, which took effect on June 1 and resulted in higher prices for e-scooters and e-motorcycles, and is expected to slow down demand in the coming months. However, it might pick up during the upcoming festival season.

Nevertheless, the prospects for the domestic electric two-wheeler industry are expected to remain strong due to the rising cost of petrol and diesel and the cost-effective nature of eco-friendly two-wheeler travel. Manufacturers are expected to announce price increases in the near future.

Rudrakshas are dried seeds of a tree, which grows in select locations in Asia. Also called tears of Shiva, many legends describe its origin. The word Rudraksha comes from rudra, lord Shiva's name and Aksha, meaning tears. Rudrakshas are believed to be very supportive in maintaining physical and mental balance. Elizabeth&nbsp; Holmes, the founder of Theranos, has been making the headlines since 2013, initially for good reasons but then things changed over the years. The 39-year-old American entrepreneur has been convicted of fraud and sentenced to 11 years in prison which begins today. Here are 12 things you should probably know about Holmes:

1. Elizabeth Anne Holmes was born on February 3, 1984, in Washington DC. Her mother, Noel Holmes, worked for a Congressional committee, while her father, Christian Holmes, worked as the vice president of Enron which later went bankrupt.&nbsp;

2. Holmes is a Stanford dropout and has a fear of needles. At 19, this fear led to the origin of Theranos in 2003. Theranos, is a private healthcare technology company that claimed to revolutionise&nbsp;the blood-testing industry, as Holmes claimed that her fear of needles&nbsp;acted as a motivation for her company. The company's name is a combination of 'Therapy and 'Diagnosis.' The company was initially named Real-Time Curses.&nbsp;

3. Holmes is an admirer of Apple founder Steve Jobs and has deliberately copied his style of wearing a black turtleneck sweater frequently.&nbsp;

4. Holmes is married to Billy Evans and the couple has two children.&nbsp;

5. Elizabeth follows a strict lifestyle. She is a vegan and her meals are&nbsp;a blended concoction of cucumber, parsley, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, and celery.

6. In 2015, Forbes named Holmes as the 'youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire' in the United States on the basis of her company's valuation of $9 billion.

7. Holmes was in a relationship with the company's COO Sunny Ramesh Balwani.&nbsp;

8. Theranos'&nbsp;decline began in 2015 after several journalistic and regulatory investigations blew the whistle on the company's claims and said that Holmes might have misled the government and investors.&nbsp;

9. A federal US grand jury indicted Holmes and Balwani on nine counts of fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The two collected a massive fund worth $700 million from investors over false and exaggerated claims. Holmes paid a $500,000 fine and returned $18.9 million shares to the company, relinquished her voting control of Theranos, and accepted&nbsp;a ten-year ban from serving as an officer or director of a public company.

10. After claims about Theranos began to surface, Forbes revised Holmes's estimated net worth to zero and Fortune named her in its feature article on "The World's 19 Most Disappointing Leaders."

Theranos fraud: Here are 10 things you should know about Elizabeth Holmes

On May 28 (Sunday), India's new triangular-shaped parliament was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who unveiled several new features and installations in the building compared to the old one.

The new parliament building has many notable additions,&nbsp;one of which is the historical "Sengol," a sceptre positioned next to the chair of the Lok Sabha Speaker in the chamber.&nbsp;

Another intriguing feature that most of us noticed is the installation of "Foucault's Pendulum" in the gallery section of the Constitution Hall.

But what exactly does the pendulum do and what's the history behind it? Here's everything you need to know.

The Story behind Foucault's Pendulum: History and Science&nbsp;

The charge of installing the pendulum was taken by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM).

Leon Foucault was the person who carried out the first experiment on Foucault's Pendulum in 1851, with the aim to demonstrate the Earth's rotation.

One of the largest of its kind in India, the pendulum stands at a height of 22 metres and weighs about 36 kg. It possesses all characteristics of&nbsp;other pendulums.&nbsp;

Leon's experiment entailed suspending the heavy objects at a height using a string, enabling unrestricted swinging in all directions.&nbsp;

Once set in motion, the pendulum gradually altered in its alignment over time, if it is swinging in a north-south direction, it will gradually shift towards the east-west direction.&nbsp;

In conclusion, the experiment stated that the pendulum doesn't change its plane of motion, instead the ground beneath it does. This means, when aligned along the Earth's axis at the north and south poles, the pendulum returned precisely to its original position in 24 hours.&nbsp;

Making and Installation of Foucault's Pendulum

The pendulum was created in a matter of 10 to 12 months and is completely made in India by Project Incharge Tapas Moharana.&nbsp;

The pendulum has been completely crafted from gunmetal and has been equipped with an electromagnetic coil to ensure smooth and uninterrupted movement.&nbsp;

Moharana said, "The suspension system is mounted on the ceiling, and there is a continuous power supply to eliminate any hindrances to the pendulum's motion. The first such pendulum was installed in Pune, and we made certain modifications for this installation."

Beauty pageants are often celebrated&nbsp;with crowing and tears. However, things turned a bit ugly at an LGBTQ+ &nbsp;beauty pageant contest in Brazil when an angry husband smashed the winner's crown.&nbsp;

The incident occurred at the finale of Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023 in Brazil.&nbsp;

In a video, the two drag queens Emanuelly Belini (winner) and Nathally Becker (runner-up) were seen standing in front of each other as the crown hovered above them. As per the customs of beauty pageants, after the winner is announced, the two contestants graciously hug each other. But Becker's husband had something else in his mind.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;video above clearly shows&nbsp;that as both queens were hugging each other, Becker's husband came on to the stage, snatched&nbsp;the crown&nbsp;and smashed&nbsp;it hard to the floor. The furious man splintered the crown made of jewels and shouted that the judgment is unfair. The man yelled out inaudible profanities as he spent a few more seconds on the stage. &nbsp;After breaking the winner's crown, he tried to pull away his wife but the security invaded and stopped him. He was resisted, chased and taken backstage.&nbsp;

This instance shocks the audience present at the LGBTQ+ contest.&nbsp;

As quoted by The New York Times, Malone Haenish, the pageant's coordinator issued a statement on the incident condemning the behaviour of Becker's husband. She said, "He did not consider the result to be fair and caused all this inconvenience and damage."

"We vehemently condemn the incident that occurred at the time of the crowning when the partner of Miss Cuiabá, who was classified in second place, invaded the stage and aggressively destroyed the crown," she added.

The authorities said that the pageant's legal team has been informed about the incident and will take action accordingly.&nbsp;

Pizza is not just food; for some, it's an emotion, a joy of life. What if you could order a pizza right now and pay later? Sounds interesting, right? A pizza restaurant in New Zealand has gone one step further: buy now, pay in the afterlife.

Here's how the one-of-a-kind payment method, which is admittedly a marketing stunt poking fun at the 'pay later schemes', works.

<h3>'Buy now, Pay later'</h3>

New Zealand's pizza chain Hell's Pizza announced an uncanny payment method for its customers: the "buy now, pay later" concept offering door-to-door pizza delivery, but with a twist.

According to the restaurant's official website, the "Afterlife Pay" policy will be available to only '666' customers, who will have to sign a legally enforceable agreement in their will to defer payment until after they die.&nbsp;

However, as customers found the scheme unusual at first, the pizza chain assured them that there were no hidden penalties or frauds.

The company's CEO, Benn Cumming, claimed that the arrangement alleviated New Zealand's growing problem of falling into the "buy now, pay later" trap. He said that AfterPay Life is a lighthearted campaign intended to show that you can have pizza and eat it too without any pesky penalties.

Speaking to a media outlet, he stated that the marketing stunt was inspired by the current buy now, pay later programme affecting Kiwis.

"We're seeing a growing number of people using the schemes to buy essential items like food, and we think it's taking it a step too far when you've got quick service restaurants like ours being asked to offer BNPL for what is considered a treat."

<h3>How can you avail the free pizza?</h3>

Users wanting to get the free pizza need to visit the official website of the pizza chain and register themselves.&nbsp;

If selected, the company will then invite the individuals&nbsp;to sign a "genuine amendment to their will authorising the collection of the cost of their pizza upon death."

No interest or extra fees will be charged as the deal is legally enforceable.&nbsp;

<h3>The scheme is addictive, and can lead to debt</h3>

While this scheme sounds interesting, the Consumer Protection Authority of New Zealand, after detailed research, has warned people of possible addictive behaviour and the high risk of leading people to debt.&nbsp;

The organisation also wanted customers to not use the system only to get a free pizza, as it was originally introduced to help New Zealanders cope with the high expense of living in the country.
