The shareholders' representative, Greg Varallo, thanked the court for its decision, saying, "We are enormously grateful for the court's thorough and extraordinarily well-reasoned decision in turning back the Tesla board's absurdly outsized pay package for Musk." &nbsp;

He added that the court's work would "redound directly to the benefit of Tesla investors, who will see the dilution from this gargantuan pay package erased".

<h2>'Largest' compensation</h2>

Judge McCormick in her decision highlighted the extraordinary nature of Musk's 2018 pay plan, calling it "the largest potential compensation opportunity ever observed in public markets by multiple orders of magnitude."&nbsp;

The plan, valued at a maximum of $55.8 billion, allowed Musk to get Tesla shares in 12 parts if he met certain goals.

During the 2022 trial in Delaware, Musk defended the pay deal, talking about the tough time when investors "thought we would fail and go bankrupt."

He said, "We were in quite a tough position at the time. We were losing a lot of money," adding that "the probability of survival was extremely low."

"Given the collection of people tasked with negotiating on Tesla's behalf, it is unsurprising that there was no meaningful negotiation over any of the terms of the plan," she said.

According to local media, impeachment charges can be brought against the President with 56 votes.

The MDP and Democrats collectively hold more than 56 seats—45&nbsp;from the MDP and 13 from the Democrats. Additionally, the People's National Congress has 13, while there are three independents, and the Jumhooree Party and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) each have two members.

In a political manoeuvre with strategic implications, seven lawmakers resigned from the Maldives Parliament in November. They did this to assume key roles in President Mohamed Muizzu's government. Despite the significance of this reshuffle, the country's election&nbsp;commission chose to forgo organising by-elections, citing the upcoming parliamentary polls set for 2024.

Seizing the moment, the primary opposition force, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which boasts a majority in Parliament, deftly amended the standing orders.&nbsp;

They brought the amendment so that the seats left vacant by departing lawmakers are not factored into the overall count of members of Parliament. As a result, the total number of MPs has undergone a reduction, shrinking from the initial 87 to a revised count of 80.

As per the Hindustan Times, the country's attorney general's office has filed a case with the Supreme Court regarding the recent amendment to parliament's standing orders that allow opposition lawmakers to launch impeachment proceedings against the president.

Attorney General Ahmed Usham confirmed the filing of case on Sunday. However, the Supreme Court has yet to issue a statement.

In a related development, a day before the reported impeachment plans, the PPM-PNC coalition submitted no-confidence motions&nbsp;against Maldives Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem, both belonging to the MDP.&nbsp;

In the United Kingdom's Wembley, last week, a Hindu temple became the scene of a potential hate crime, as a man reportedly reciting Quran verses tried to throw a sacred idol and smashed a lamp (diya).

On Saturday (Jan 6th), a black man wearing a hoodie and a face mask entered the Eelapatheeswarar Alayam Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Wembley, England, with his shoes on, despite being stopped by the devotees and temple volunteers.

As per Rajasingham Jayadevan, the founder and general secretary of the temple,&nbsp;the man was initially stopped by&nbsp;volunteers and devotees who&nbsp;asked him to remove his boots and pull down the hoodie, but&nbsp;he refused to listen and left the temple premises.

"One of the devotees and our volunteers managed to restrain him after he became extremely aggressive, and were successfully able to catch the murti (idol) which was thrown," he said, as per an X post by INSIGHT, a community of British Hindus and Indians.

"He then went to Navagraha (nine deities) stand and there were brass diyas (lamp) there. He smashed one of the Navagraha structures and tried to shake one of the Navgrahas," Jayadevan was quoted as saying by&nbsp;Times Of India.

"During this time, he was reciting Quranic verses," he further claimed.&nbsp;

The man was detained by volunteers and the&nbsp;Metropolitan Police were called. The man even tried to assault an officer.

In a statement, the police said "Shortly after 1.30 pm on January 6, police were called to a man who had entered a Hindu temple in Wembley. It was reported that the 22-year-old man was causing a significant disturbance inside the temple. Officers attended, and the man was detained. He was taken to hospital as a precaution due to his elevated heart rate and subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and taken into police custody."

However, the man was not booked for vandalism, as "no one present wished to substantiate any related criminal allegation."

India's Parliament security breach saga has taken another turn with two of the six accused behind the major security lapse undergoing narco-analysis and brain mapping tests. On the orders of the court, a team of the Delhi Police Special Cell has taken accused Sagar Sharma, Manoranjan D, Amol Shinde, Lalit Jha and Mahesh Kumawat to Ahmedabad, Gujarat where the test will be conducted.

The narco test is being conducted in India's most important forensic laboratory, the Forensic Science Laboratory in Gandhinagar. On Thursday (Jan 11), as per news agency ANI, tests of accused Sagar Sharma and&nbsp;Manoranjan D were underway. The whole process is expected to be completed by Friday (Jan 12).

Furthermore, all five will have to take polygraph tests. The sixth accused, Neelam Azad, refused to give her consent for the test.

As per the report, narco-analysis and brain mapping tests on Sagar and Manoranjan were ordered by the court to conclude the real mastermind behind the Parliament infiltration.&nbsp;

Delhi Police reportedly suspects that Manoranjan D was the mastermind behind the parliament security breach.&nbsp;

Quoting sources, ANI reports that during interrogation, one of the accused Lalit Jha accused Manoranjan and said that he was constantly trying for funding and that Manoranjan's final goal was to create a big organisation.

Lalit also said that he had no idea Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, UAPA, would be imposed on all of them after the incident.&nbsp;

Switzerland will try a former Gambian minister under ousted dictator Yahya Jammeh for crimes against humanity on Monday in a milestone case where a serial rape victim will testify after a multi-decade wait for justice.

Former interior minister Ousman Sonko will become the highest-ranking official to be tried in Europe under the principle of universal jurisdiction that allows grave crimes to be prosecuted anywhere, said Swiss campaign group TRIAL International which filed the complaint against him.

Nine Gambian plaintiffs will travel to Switzerland for the scheduled Jan. 8-30 trial at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona in a case rights activists see as ensuring global accountability for the worst atrocities.

Sonko, 54, faces charges including murder, multiple rapes, and torture between 2000-2016 in what is Switzerland's second trial ever for crimes against humanity. He denies the charges.

"It has been a long period of waiting, waiting with anger, anxiety. But I am very optimistic now and I feel so happy. I am smelling justice," said Madi Ceesay, a 67-year-old plaintiff who says he was detained and tortured under Sonko.

The defendant's lawyer Philippe Currat plans to ask the court to abandon the case, citing problems with the investigations and hearings.

"Since the beginning, I have been stupefied by the way this file has been handled," he told Reuters, saying some of the evidence in the indictment was based on "secret" hearings in Gambia and that interviewees had not been informed of their rights.

<h2>'Struggling for 25 years'</h2>

One of the plaintiffs is Binta Jamba who, according to the indictment, was raped multiple times by Sonko between 2000-2002 after he murdered her husband in connection with an alleged planned coup attempt.

Once, in 2005, he held her captive for five days, beating her and raping her repeatedly, the indictment said. She fell pregnant by him twice and he paid for the abortions.

"Me and my family have been struggling with this for almost 25 years now," she said in a message sent to Reuters. "Without justice, I will never have peace in my life."

Currat says he can prove that Sonko was abroad during much of the period of the rape accusations.

He will also argue that many of the alleged crimes against humanity, including the rape charges, happened before a relevant Swiss law took effect in 2011 and are not admissible.

Sonko, 54, was arrested in early 2017 in Switzerland, where he was seeking asylum. Jammeh's 22-year repressive rule ended in January 2017 after he lost an election and was forced to flee.

Sonko could face a life sentence as the maximum possible penalty.

Currat says his treatment in Swiss jails has been cruel and that he was denied food and given inadequate medical care.

Fatoumatta Sandeng, the daughter of Solo Sandeng, a Gambian opposition activist killed in custody in 2016, said she is eager to look into Sonko's eyes in court. "If we don't hold people accountable, things like this will keep happening in Gambia, in Africa, all over the world," she said.

Sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's associates have become public knowledge. On Wednesday (Jan&nbsp;3rd), a&nbsp;New York judge began to unseal the identities of people linked in court documents to&nbsp;the US financier,&nbsp;who had committed suicide a couple of years back.

This comes as last month (on Dec 18), Manhattan federal court judge Loretta Preska ordered the New York Court to "unseal in full" the names of around 180 people associated with Epstein.

The names of more than 150 associates mentioned&nbsp;in the lawsuit, many of them appearing under the pseudonym "John Doe" or "Jane Doe", are now being released, after their identities remained a secret from the public for so long. The rest of the names will be kept sealed&nbsp;as the individuals objected to them becoming public knowledge.

The unsealing, as per AFP, includes names of Epstein's associates, suspected accomplices and his victims.

In December, noting that many of the names are already public due to interviews and other media coverage, the judge, as per CNS News, said that the substance in question was not salacious and should not be kept sealed.

However, given that some "J.Does" are minors and possible victims of the paramours, the Judge said their information would remain sealed.

Among Epstein's known associates are the Duke of York Prince Andrews, former US presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.&nbsp;

According to the ruling, the names were to be made public on January 1, 2024, individuals were given 14 days to appeal against the revelation of their names.&nbsp;

Following this, the Palm Beach Police began a thirteen-month undercover investigation of Epstein. This included a search of his home, which uncovered a large amount of pictures of young girls, along with two hidden cameras.&nbsp;

Soon, the FBI became involved, launching its own investigation nicknamed "Operation Leap Year". In June 2007, the federal agency submitted a 53-page indictment against him. Subsequently, Epstein agreed to plead guilty in Florida, registering as a sex offender.

In 2008, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to a state charge of procuring for prostitution a girl below age 18.

On July 6, 2019, he was arrested on sex trafficking charges by the FBI-NYPD Crimes Against Children Task Force. He was jailed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.

A subsequent search of his Manhattan townhouse turned up evidence of sex trafficking, and also found "hundreds – and perhaps thousands – of sexually suggestive photographs of fully – or partially – nude females". On July 8, prosecutors with the Public Corruption Unit of the Southern District of New York charged Epstein with sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex.

He sought release on bail, but the request was denied on July 18 by US District Judge Richard M Berman, who said Epstein posed a danger to the public and a serious flight risk to avoid prosecution.&nbsp;
