CarbonScape, a New Zealand-based company, is collecting woodchips from across the world to turn into a form of synthetic graphite which, according to CEO Ivan Williams, is not only more planet-friendly but also as pure as synthetic graphite made from fossil fuels.

Notably, synthetic graphite, used in batteries to power EVs, is mostly produced in China. Therefore, CarbonScape can help provide an alternative to reduce the West’s reliance on Beijing for critical minerals that power the energy transition, amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions.&nbsp;

Biographite, according to the company, is made by heating the byproducts from the forestry industry, aka the woodchips, using a process called thermo-catalytic graphitisation. This process produces charcoal which is then catalysed and purified into graphite which can be used to power EVs.&nbsp;

“The production of ‘traditional’ synthetic graphite uses fossil fuel-based feedstocks, such as coal tar pitch and petroleum coke, and fossil fuel-powered processes,” said Williams, as quoted by Euronews.&nbsp;

He added, “Consequently, it emits 35 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for each tonne of graphite it produces.” The mining of graphite can also adversely impact local communities, animals, and the environment.&nbsp;

According to Williams, their process can remove the equivalent of 2.7 tonnes of carbon emissions for every tonne that is used to make biographite. The material is reportedly being manufactured in the European Union and the United States.&nbsp;

The CarbonSpace CEO also noted that since biographite can be made close to battery factories it can further lessen carbon dioxide emissions by cutting the need to transport it. “Our mission is to decarbonize the battery industry,” Williams told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).&nbsp;

“But we didn't know the same thing was happening to ocean plates," Gun stated. 
 
The Pacific plate consists of the maximum Pacific Ocean floor and has moved westwards to plunge into the mantle of Earth along the trenches or subduction zones of undersea which run from Japan to New Zealand and Australia.

New details revealed eruption craters, an ancient river and a large magnetic anomaly in the southern part of the lake. It is believed that the new mapping proves for the first time that Rotorua's mainland hydrothermal systems extend into the lake's hidden depths.&nbsp;

The maps indicate that lakes in the historically active region could house "significant" geothermal resources. The surveys have been carried out with the New Zealand Defence Force in 2016 and 2017.&nbsp;

Dr Cornel de Ronde of GNS Science explained that the mapping, which covered about 70 per cent of the lake at 1m resolution, revealed a variety of phenomena deep beneath the surface.&nbsp;

Dr de Ronde told Live Science that seeing the maps was similar to wearing spectacles for the first time and not realising you needed them. "You finally put those glasses on, and you can see the fine print," he said.&nbsp;

The river that was observed once would have flown from Rotorua's Sulphur Point to the northwest of Mokoia Island. It appears on the map that the river curved to the northeast.&nbsp;

The latest mapping has provided an intriguing glimpse into how the terrain would have been before the lake developed within a massive caldera volcano that erupted 240,000 years ago.&nbsp;

The researchers were equally astounded by the thousands of pockmarks scattered throughout the lake floor, some of which measured more than 50m in diameter.&nbsp;

Dr de Ronde stated that all these indicated gas was being discharged from below, with the largest likely releasing methane stemming from decomposing organic matter.&nbsp;

The team of researchers also discovered evidence of a doughnut-shaped ring of negative heat flow on the lake floor surrounding a circular area of positive heat flow northwest of Mokoia Island, which is likely linked to a magnetic anomaly in the same location.&nbsp;

"This suggests a possible, separate, geothermal system in the lake associated with a magma body with recharge by lake water," he said.&nbsp;

As the name suggests, since these chemicals do not naturally break down, they can cause cancer, liver disease, cardiovascular disease and fetal complications and can contribute to other major health issues.&nbsp;

So far, these chemicals have been detected in drinking water, sea foam, groundwater, ice, and even human blood. It is widely used in products ranging from Teflon pans to pizza boxes.&nbsp;

The announcement was made following EPA’s public consultations last year which received 20 submissions, out of which 14 were from the cosmetics industry.&nbsp;

“We will continue to engage with industry to manage the transition before PFAS are banned and the other changes take effect,” said Presow.&nbsp;

According to the new rules, from December 31, 2026, cosmetic products containing PFAS will be banned from being imported or manufactured in New Zealand. Additionally, from December 31, 2027, cosmetic products containing PFAS would no longer be allowed to be sold or supplied in New Zealand.&nbsp;

<h2>What about other countries?</h2>

In 2023, a number of US states said they are mulling banning cosmetic products which contain the toxic PFA.&nbsp;

The state Senate of Vermont approved legislation in April 2023 which prohibits manufacturers from selling or distributing any consumer-use product that contains PFAS as well as several other chemicals.

This comes after California, Colorado and Maryland imposed similar restrictions which will come into effect in 2025. The European Union (EU) is also considering a proposal to ban PFAS.&nbsp;

"The boaties did a stellar job and without a doubt saved this man's life," Hamilton said. One of the rescuers, James Mcdonnell, told Newshub, "a series of fortunate events" led to the fisherman's rescue. When they saw the watch's reflection, they weren't expecting to find a person. "I mean, we were ten miles (16 kilometres) off the back of Mayor Island and not a boat in sight, but sure enough, as we got closer, it was quite obvious that someone was waving their arms," he said. Max White was another rescuer who said their priority was to board the man on the boat and keep him awake and warm. "We had a big cooler bag and wrapped him up in as many layers as possible," he said. "He's desperate for water. So I had a bit of warm water on the boat and some cranberry juice. Give him what we can and try, and get him talking and make sure he stayed awake as best possible." The police said the fisherman wanted to express his gratitude to the rescuers and the emergency services for saving his life. Authorities are searching for the fisherman's boat, but he held onto the one thing that gave him hope during his ordeal.
