Team India has moved to the first place in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table after Australia defeated New Zealand in the first Test in Wellington. In the two-match Test series, Australia took a 1-0 lead against New Zealand with a 172-run win at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. Australia beat their trans-Tasman rivals in the series opener as Cameron Green smashed 174 runs and Nathan Lyon secured a ten-wicket haul, including a six-fer in the second innings. However, Australia's victory against New Zealand helped India reach the top of the WTC points table. World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 Cycle Points Table Here are the latest WTC standings for the ongoing cycle: Standings Team Played Won Lost Draw Points PCT 1 India 8 5 2 1 62 64.58 2 New Zealand 5 3 2 0 36 60 3 Australia 11 7 3 1 78 59.09 4 Bangladesh 2 1 1 0 12 50 5 Pakistan 5 2 3 0 22 36.66 6 West Indies 4 1 2 1 16 33.33 7 South Africa 4 1 3 0 12 25 8 England 9 3 5 1 21 19.44 9 Sri Lanka 2 0 2 0 0 0 How did India move to the top after Australia's win? New Zealand's defeat against Australia means they have 36 points in five matches. Their loss reduced their points percentage (PCT) to 60, below India's 64.58. Moreover, Australia stayed in third place despite the victory, even though their PCT went up from 55 to 59.09. The rest of the table remained the same. If India wins the five-match Test series against England in Dharamshala, they can extend their lead at the top. Their PCT will reach 68.51 if they win against England. If that happens, India will stay at the top even if New Zealand wins the second Test in Christchurch. New Zealand missed an opportunity to win the match against Australia. After having the Aussies at nine down for 267 in the first innings, New Zealand allowed Green to score his second Test century and then form a match-turning partnership of 116 runs with Nathan Lyon. This partnership helped Australia to score 383 runs. New Zealand's batting lineup struggled against Lyon's spin, with only Glenn Phillips able to apply himself. Though New Zealand fought bacl, conceding a 204-run lead in the first innings made it difficult for them. They were eventually all out for 196 in the fourth innings, despite a good innings from Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. This match marks the 11th consecutive Test where New Zealand have failed to beat Australia at home. They have lost ten games and had one draw since their win in 1993. WTC Points Table: India move to top after Australia beat New Zealand in 1st Test

New Zealand on Thursday (Feb 29) designated Hamas as a "terrorist entity", becoming one of the last Western countries to do so stating that the October 7 assault destroyed the notion that its political wings could be separated from the military ones.

"The organisation as a whole bears responsibility for these horrific terrorist attacks," the government said, announcing a move that spells a freeze on Hamas assets in New Zealand and a ban on providing it with "material support".

"The terrorist attacks by Hamas in October 2023 were brutal and we have unequivocally condemned them," New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said in a statement.

Luxon highlighted that the designation was about Hamas "and is not a reflection on the Palestinian people in Gaza and around the world" while indicating humanitarian support would continue.

"The designation does not stop New Zealand from providing humanitarian and future development assistance to benefit civilians in Gaza."

New Zealand has designated the Qassam Brigades, which is the military wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas as a terrorist entity since the year 2010. However, it was earlier reluctant to designate the entire group as a terrorist entity.

Hamas, which is also a political party and enjoys widespread support across Palestine, had won the elections in Gaza in the year 2006 and since then has ruled without fresh polls.

Meanwhile, some New Zealand political figures have argued that the Israel Defense Forces should also be slapped with a similar terrorist designation as the one being handed over to Hamas over its months-long Gaza offensive that has claimed the lives of over 30,000 people, as per Hamas-controlled authorities in the territory.

The probability of such a move is highly unlikely, however, New Zealand on Thursday also announced sanctions on nearly a dozen "extremist Israeli settlers" accused of violence against Palestinians.

In a significant development in the New Zealand media landscape, one of the country's major free-to-air television networks, Three, announced plans on Wednesday to cease its newsroom operations, television news broadcasts, and website, potentially resulting in the loss of up to 200 media jobs.

The decision, if implemented, marks the end of 35 years of broadcast news on the Three network, leaving the state-owned TVNZ as the primary producer of broadcast news content in the country.

Warner Bros Discovery, the parent company of Newshub, which airs on Three, cited the need for further cost reductions as the driving force behind the proposed closure of the newsroom.

Glen Kyne, a senior vice president at Warner Bros Discovery for Australia and New Zealand, stressed the economic challenges facing the industry, stating, "Free-to-air and news are expensive businesses to run. Put simply, the economic headwinds means the returns are not there".

While acknowledging the role of Newshub in New Zealand's media landscape, Kyne highlighted the necessity of the proposed changes regardless of their potential impact, saying, "These proposed changes will be hard if they are implemented, but we think they are necessary". The closure, if finalised, would reshape the media landscape in New Zealand, consolidating TVNZ's position as the dominant broadcaster of news content.

Newshub, in a statement on its website, indicated that the proposed closure could result in the loss of jobs for around 200 journalists, producers, editors, camera operators, and associated staff members.

This has raised concerns about the future of journalism in New Zealand and the broader implications for media diversity and public access to information.

Even with the planned closure of its news operations, Warner Bros Discovery expressed intentions to continue operating digital platform ThreeNow and network channel Three.

The network aims to showcase programming from its extensive library and produce local content where feasible funding can be secured.

However, the move signifies the broader challenges facing traditional media outlets globally as they grapple with shifting consumer preferences and advertising revenue dynamics.

The proposed restructuring of Three's news operations is subject to consultation processes as required by New Zealand law, with a final decision expected in early April.

New Zealand TV Network Three plans newsroom closure, 200 jobs at risk

Your electric vehicles (EVs) could soon be powered by woodchips. A company in New Zealand is turning discarded woodchips into a more sustainable version of synthetic graphite also known as biographite. The alternative would also help break China’s dominance on a key ingredient in EV batteries.

What is biographite?

CarbonScape, a New Zealand-based company, is collecting woodchips from across the world to turn into a form of synthetic graphite which, according to CEO Ivan Williams, is not only more planet-friendly but also as pure as synthetic graphite made from fossil fuels.

Notably, synthetic graphite, used in batteries to power EVs, is mostly produced in China. Therefore, CarbonScape can help provide an alternative to reduce the West’s reliance on Beijing for critical minerals that power the energy transition, amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Biographite, according to the company, is made by heating the byproducts from the forestry industry, aka the woodchips, using a process called thermo-catalytic graphitisation. This process produces charcoal which is then catalysed and purified into graphite which can be used to power EVs.

“The production of ‘traditional’ synthetic graphite uses fossil fuel-based feedstocks, such as coal tar pitch and petroleum coke, and fossil fuel-powered processes,” said Williams, as quoted by Euronews.

He added, “Consequently, it emits 35 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for each tonne of graphite it produces.” The mining of graphite can also adversely impact local communities, animals, and the environment.

According to Williams, their process can remove the equivalent of 2.7 tonnes of carbon emissions for every tonne that is used to make biographite. The material is reportedly being manufactured in the European Union and the United States.

The CarbonSpace CEO also noted that since biographite can be made close to battery factories it can further lessen carbon dioxide emissions by cutting the need to transport it. “Our mission is to decarbonize the battery industry,” Williams told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Less dependence on China

Several Western countries are considering sustainable alternatives to meet their climate goals, including increased investment in EVs. China sent shockwaves across the world in October after announcing that it would tighten export controls on graphite, citing security concerns.

China not only reportedly produces 60 per cent of the world’s natural graphite and nearly 70 per cent of synthetic graphite, but also mostly all the very pure graphite used in lithium-ion batteries, used to power EVs.

In 2023, CarbonScape secured $18 million in funding from Finnish-Swedish forestry firm Stora Enso and Hong Kong-based battery producer Amperex Technology, reported Euronews.

The funds, the firm said, would be used to finance the construction of commercial biographite plants in Europe and the US.

The New Zealand government has announced its intention to revoke a groundbreaking law that would have prohibited tobacco sales for future generations, a move set to take effect from July.

Set to take effect from July, the toughest anti-tobacco rules in the world would have banned sales to those born after January 1, 2009, cut nicotine content in smoked tobacco products and reduced the number of tobacco retailers by more than 90 per cent.

New Zealand, whose people are informally called The Kiwis after the bird, welcomed its first kiwi hospital with the successful treatment of "Splash," a chick that found itself in a swimming pool.

The opening marks a significant step in the country's efforts to preserve its once-threatened national bird, as reported by AFP news agency.

The surge in kiwi populations, once endangered, prompted the creation of a specialised hospital in Kerikeri, Northland. The initiative reflects New Zealand's commitment to safeguarding its iconic species, with the hospital being the first of its kind in the country.

Constructed by the local conservation group Kiwi Coast, the hospital is strategically located in the heart of Northland, home to nearly 10,000 brown kiwis. This region has played a vital role in the species' resurgence, with its population now exceeding 26,000 across the country.

Australia's star opener David Warner says that he's expecting the New Zealand crowd to come at them hard in the upcoming five-T20I series. The series would be Warner's last bilateral outing ahead of his planned retirement after T20 World Cup in June later this year. Notably, Warner has already announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs but has left the door open for ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 shall the team need him.

“I enjoy playing here,” Warner said on the eve of first T20I. “It’s about coming out and trying to put my best foot forward, and score runs."

The batter, however, remembered Australia's 2016 tour of New Zealand when the players were abused.

“The crowd, yeah, they got personal, but if they have to get personal, that’s their character ... if you want to pay your money to come and abuse people, you have to go back and lay in your own bed."

“We’re here to play the game of cricket that we love, enjoy and put bums on seats to keep the game going."

“It’s about coming out and trying to put my best foot forward, and score runs." The batter, however, remembered Australia's 2016 tour of New Zealand when the players were abused. “The crowd, yeah, they got personal, but if they have to get personal, that’s their character ... if you want to pay your money to come and abuse people, you have to go back and lay in your own bed." Japan has successfully launched a spacecraft designed to inspect and potentially remove man-made space debris from around the Earth, said a statement from Astroscale Japan on Monday.

The Active Debris Removal has been launched by Astroscale-Japan (ADRAS-J). As per an AFP news agency report, it will rendezvous with and examine a Japanese H2A rocket remnant that has been in space for 15 years. The H2A rocket body, about the size of a bus, was launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in 2009. Its precise location and orbital position are not known.

Debris removal

Launched from New Zealand, the ADRAS-J spacecraft has already made contact and is ready to begin operations, said project manager Eijiro Atarashi in a statement.

Using observation data from Earth, the estimated location of the H2A rocket body will be determined, and ADRAS-J will approach it "from a safe distance" to gather images and assess its condition and movements.

Selected by JAXA for its debris removal programme, ADRAS-J, as per Astroscale is the first spacecraft of its kind, which aims to remove large debris of Japanese origin in collaboration with private companies.

Space debris

As per the European Space Agency (ESA) estimates, there are around one million pieces of debris larger than a centimetre in orbit. These pieces of debris, which are big enough to "disable a spacecraft" pose a big threat.

The build-up of space debris, including used satellites and rocket parts, has been a growing concern since the space age began. Proposed solutions include using lasers to push debris into new orbits and Astroscale's space "tow-truck," which employs a magnet to collect and move out-of-service satellites.

The ADRAS-J mission follows Japan's successful launch of its new flagship H3 rocket on Saturday, after years of delays and previous failed attempts. Additionally, Japan achieved a successful, albeit slightly off-kilter, unmanned probe landing on the Moon last month, making it the fifth country to accomplish a "soft" lunar landing.

In a new study, scientists found that several rigid tectonic plates which are under the Pacific Ocean are being pulled apart.

Earth has an outer shell, which is called the lithosphere and is divided into various rigid plates. These plates are known to float in the semi-fluid asthenosphere and their movement is a key feature of these plates.

The University of Toronto's geoscientists discovered that the plate is scored by large undersea faults which are hundreds of kilometres long and thousands of metres deep.

The team was surprised after finding that the geological deformation, which is the continental plate interiors' regular feature, is also taking place inside the ocean plates.

“We knew that geological deformations like faults happen on the continental plate interiors far from plate boundaries,” said Erkan Gun, who is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at U of T Scarborough, as reported by Science Alert.

“But we didn't know the same thing was happening to ocean plates," Gun stated.

The Pacific plate consists of the maximum Pacific Ocean floor and has moved westwards to plunge into the mantle of Earth along the trenches or subduction zones of undersea which run from Japan to New Zealand and Australia.

Rotorua, a city in New Zealand, is named after the iconic Lake Rotorua. The city, which is located in the Bay of Plenty Region in the nation's North Island, is renowned for its geothermal activity and Maori culture.

Lake Rotorua is at the centre of a vast historic crater on the North Island, created by a dormant volcano. The lake has a rich history and is associated with many folklore and tales.

In the latest development, scientists have made a major discovery deep beneath Lake Rotorua. A research institute in New Zealand mapped the lake's floor, which revealed stunning and never-before-seen details, researchers at GNS Science stated.

New details revealed eruption craters, an ancient river and a large magnetic anomaly in the southern part of the lake. It is believed that the new mapping proves for the first time that Rotorua's mainland hydrothermal systems extend into the lake's hidden depths.

The maps indicate that lakes in the historically active region could house "significant" geothermal resources. The surveys have been carried out with the New Zealand Defence Force in 2016 and 2017.

Dr Cornel de Ronde of GNS Science explained that the mapping, which covered about 70 per cent of the lake at 1m resolution, revealed a variety of phenomena deep beneath the surface.

Dr de Ronde told Live Science that seeing the maps was similar to wearing spectacles for the first time and not realising you needed them. "You finally put those glasses on, and you can see the fine print," he said.

What are the discoveries?

The river that was observed once would have flown from Rotorua's Sulphur Point to the northwest of Mokoia Island. It appears on the map that the river curved to the northeast.

The latest mapping has provided an intriguing glimpse into how the terrain would have been before the lake developed within a massive caldera volcano that erupted 240,000 years ago.

The researchers were equally astounded by the thousands of pockmarks scattered throughout the lake floor, some of which measured more than 50m in diameter.

Dr de Ronde stated that all these indicated gas was being discharged from below, with the largest likely releasing methane stemming from decomposing organic matter.

The team of researchers also discovered evidence of a doughnut-shaped ring of negative heat flow on the lake floor surrounding a circular area of positive heat flow northwest of Mokoia Island, which is likely linked to a magnetic anomaly in the same location.

"This suggests a possible, separate, geothermal system in the lake associated with a magma body with recharge by lake water," he said.

Williamson scored 109 in addition to his 118 in the first innings and became only the fifth Kiwi batter to achieve the feat. Thanks to Williamson's century, New Zealand piled on more misery on inexperienced South Africa by taking their total lead to 528 runs with six wickets remaining by the end of play on Tuesday.

Before Williamson, Glenn Turner (1974), Geoff Howarth (1978), Andrew Jones (1991) and Peter Fulton (2013) had achieved the same feat for the Blackcaps. All of these five batters, however, scored the twin hundreds in a home Test.

Turner had scored 101 & 100 not out against Australia in Christchurch, Howarth hit 122 & 102 and England in Auckland, Jones managed 122 & 100 not out against Sri Lanka in Hamilton and Fulton recorded 136 & 110 against England in Auckland before Williamson.

This was Kiwi skipper's 31st Test century and 44th in international cricket (13 in ODIs). He also became the joint second fastest to reach 31 Test tons along with Australia's Steve Smith. India's Sachin Tendulkar remains the fastest to reach the milestone.

Williamson is now joint fourth, again with Smith, in terms of most international hundreds among active cricket players. Virat Kohli (80) leads the list of active cricketers with most international hundreds ahead England's Joe Root second (46), India's Rohit Sharma (46), Steve Smith (44) and Williamson (44).

New Zealand coach Gary Stead also praised Williamson for the feat and said: "I think it's only the (fifth) time in New Zealand history that a player has got two centuries in one match. So it's pretty special to be part of. He's been an incredible player for us and just keeps churning out the runs."

New Zealand Police (NZP) said they are investigating alleged death threats and online abuse against referees at last year's Rugby World Cup. NZP Detective Inspector Stuart Mills said on Friday that three complaints had been received from governing body World Rugby about death threats against match officials allegedly made from New Zealand.

"The complaints relate to alleged breaches of the Harmful Digital Communications Act and threatening to kill," Mills told New Zealand media. World Rugby said in a statement this week there were "successful charges and law enforcement cases pending in multiple jurisdictions" in response to online abuse against match officials and players.

New Zealand announced that it is banning so-called “forever chemicals” from 2026, making it the first country to do so in a bid to protect people and the environment. The decision by the country’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) was announced on Tuesday (Jan 30), and the ban will come into effect two years later.

About the ban

New Zealand’s EPA has said it will ban the use of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) also known as “forever chemicals” added to make cosmetic products like nail polish, shaving cream, foundation, lipsticks and so on, to make them spreadable, durable and water resistant.

“We know these chemicals don’t easily break down, they can build up in our bodies, and some can be toxic at high levels,” said EPA’s hazardous substances reassessment manager, Dr Shaun Presow, on Tuesday.

“International research suggests PFAS are only found in a small number of products, but we take a precautionary approach to potential risks from PFAS,” said the EPA official, as quoted by the New Zealand media reports.

PFAS refers to a class of 14,000 chemicals that are typically used in consumer products to make them water-resistant.

As the name suggests, since these chemicals do not naturally break down, they can cause cancer, liver disease, cardiovascular disease and fetal complications and can contribute to other major health issues.

So far, these chemicals have been detected in drinking water, sea foam, groundwater, ice, and even human blood. It is widely used in products ranging from Teflon pans to pizza boxes.

The announcement was made following EPA’s public consultations last year which received 20 submissions, out of which 14 were from the cosmetics industry.

“We will continue to engage with industry to manage the transition before PFAS are banned and the other changes take effect,” said Presow.

According to the new rules, from December 31, 2026, cosmetic products containing PFAS will be banned from being imported or manufactured in New Zealand. Additionally, from December 31, 2027, cosmetic products containing PFAS would no longer be allowed to be sold or supplied in New Zealand.

By June 30, 2028, people in New Zealand would be required to dispose of all cosmetic products containing PFAS.

What about other countries?

In 2023, a number of US states said they are mulling banning cosmetic products which contain the toxic PFA.

The state Senate of Vermont approved legislation in April 2023 which prohibits manufacturers from selling or distributing any consumer-use product that contains PFAS as well as several other chemicals.

This comes after California, Colorado and Maryland imposed similar restrictions which will come into effect in 2025. The European Union (EU) is also considering a proposal to ban PFAS.

Pakistan bowled New Zealand out for 92 in the fifth and final T20I of the series in Christchurch on Sunday (Jan 21) for a consolation win in 4-1 series loss. Chasing a modest 135, NZ batters found it hard to face Player of the Match Iftikhar Ahmed's spin and were all out 42 runs short of the target. Ahmed finished with the figures of 3/24 in four overs while fellow spinner Mohammad Nawaz took 2/18 in four overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan were rocked early as Tim Southee took the wicket of Haseebullah Khan in the first over itself. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan then added 53 runs for the second wicket before Ish Sodhi sent back Azam for 13. The Men in Green then kept losing wickets at regular intervals and managed 134/8 in 20 overs.

For New Zealand, only two batters crossed the 20-run mark while a total four players got in double digits as the Kiwis found themselves tangled in the Pak spin web. Player of the series Finn Allen could also manage only 22 runs while Glenn Phillips scored 26.

Speaking after the match, New Zealand skipper Mitch Santner acknowledged that they were out outplayed while chasing a moderate target.

"The pitch slowed down a lot and we were pretty happy with the score. We just got outplayed in the second innings. The power play was very important on a slow wicket. We talk about trying to take it deep but it's good learning," said Santner at the post-match presentation.

Pak skipper Shaheen Afridi also praised Iftikhar Ahmed and said: "Ifti (Iftikhar) is a very experienced player and he's always ready for the bowling but we wanted to give everyone a proper chance so we were planning to give chances to youngsters this series, we sorted out 16-20 players (for the World Cup)."

A New Zealand couple successfully secured a refund from Qantas Airways after enduring an unpleasant incident on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, to Sydney, Australia.

The ordeal began on December 30 when the couple discovered that their plane seats were wet with what they initially thought was water.

Upon settling into their seats and placing belongings on the floor, the couple found their Qantas pillow and other items damp.

Assuming it was water, they stored the duty-free bag in the overhead bin and called a flight attendant to replace the wet pillow. However, the situation took a distressing turn when one of the passengers found children's underwear under the seat, leading them to suspect it was urine.

A former New Zealand Green Party parliamentarian has been charged by the police on two counts of shoplifting from a high-end clothing store in Auckland, a day after she resigned from her position.

“Today, a 43-year-old woman has been summonsed to appear in the Auckland District Court on two charges of shoplifting,” police said in a statement.

“These charges relate to incidents at a Ponsonby retailer that allegedly occurred on 21 and 23 December 2023.”

Golriz Ghahraman, the first refugee to be elected to New Zealand's parliament in 2017, announced her resignation on Tuesday (Jan 16) and made her first public comments since the controversy first surfaced last week.

Ghahraman, a former lawyer, said her actions were unjustified and that she wasn't using her mental health as an excuse to justify the shoplifting act.

“It is clear to me that my mental health is being badly affected by the stresses relating to my work. This has led me to act in ways that are completely out of character. I am not trying to excuse my actions, but I do want to explain them," said Ghahraman.

“People should, rightly, expect the highest standards of behaviour from their elected representatives. I fell short. I’m sorry.”

Ghahraman added that she would be focusing on her recovery and attempt to find other ways to work "for positive change in the world".

“I don’t want to hide behind my mental health problems, and I take full responsibility for my actions which I deeply regret.”

Green Party co-leaders Marama Davidson and James Shaw also released a statement on Ghahraman's departure.

“We are deeply sorry to see Ms Ghahraman leave under these circumstances and we wish her all the best for the future,” they said.

Former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern married her long-time partner Clarke Gayford in a private ceremony on Saturday (Jan 13) after delays due to stringent COVID-19 rules in the country imposed by her government. The couple tied the knot after an almost five-year engagement and around a decade of being together.

About the ceremony

The wedding ceremony took place on Saturday afternoon in Hawke’s Bay at Craggy Range Winery on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, said her spokesperson. According to a report by news site Stuff, Ardern (43) and Gayford (47) tied the knot in front of some 50 to 75 guests.

The wedding comes nearly a year after (January 19), when Ardern resigned as prime minister. During her final speech in parliament, Ardern told Gayford, a New Zealand television presenter, “Let’s finally get married.”

The couple, who also have a five-year-old daughter named Neve, first met about a decade ago, and got engaged in 2019.

Images of the wedding shared by the New Zealand media show the former PM in a dress by fashion designer Juliette Hogan paired with a long veil and Gayford in a black suit reportedly custom-made by the country’s fashion house Zambesi.

It has been reported that only the couple’s family, close friends and a few of the 43-year-old former PM’s colleagues were invited, including her successor and ex-PM Chris Hipkins and his partner Tony Grace.

The wedding was officiated by the couple’s friend and former Deputy PM Grant Robertson, said Ardern’s spokesperson.

‘Such is life’

The wedding, which was reportedly supposed to take place in the summer of 2022, was postponed due to Ardern’s government’s strict COVID-19 policies and her “go hard, go early” approach to the pandemic, which helped keep the spread of the deadly virus in check in New Zealand.

About the ceremony The wedding ceremony took place on Saturday afternoon in Hawke’s Bay at Craggy Range Winery on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, said her spokesperson. According to a report by news site Stuff, Ardern (43) and Gayford (47) tied the knot in front of some 50 to 75 guests. The wedding comes nearly a year after (January 19), when Ardern resigned as prime minister. During her final speech in parliament, Ardern told Gayford, a New Zealand television presenter, “Let’s finally get married.” WATCH | Gravitas: New Zealand premier Jacinda Ardern steps down The couple, who also have a five-year-old daughter named Neve, first met about a decade ago, and got engaged in 2019. ‘Such is life’ The wedding, which was reportedly supposed to take place in the summer of 2022, was postponed due to Ardern’s government’s strict COVID-19 policies and her “go hard, go early” approach to the pandemic, which helped keep the spread of the deadly virus in check in New Zealand. In a tale of extraordinary survival, New Zealand fisherman Will Fransen narrowly escaped the clutches of the ocean after spending a harrowing 23 hours treading water off the country's North Island.

Fransen's ordeal began on Tuesday (Jan 2) when he was on the boat without a life jacket. At the time of the incident, he was trying to pull a marlin fish out of the waters. As Fransen struggled in the vast expanse of the ocean, he faced an additional threat - a brief encounter with a circling shark.

Determined to defy the odds, Fransen used an ingenious method to attract attention and secure his rescue. His wristwatch, catching the sunlight, served as a beacon of hope. A passing boat found the stranded fisherman.
