The ousted prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif was shifted to a hospital on Monday after his health conditions drastically deteriorated due to "critically" low platelet count.

The news was shared by Sharif's personal physician Dr Adnan Malik who after meeting the stalwart in Adiala jail took to Twitter stating that the former prime minister's health required immediate in-hospital care.

"Today met former PM Nawaz Sharif for consultation and evaluation. He is visibly unwell and has multiple serious life-threatening health issues of acute nature. I have recommended immediate hospitalisation for workup and treatment. The matter is of utmost urgency," Malik said.

Sharing details of his health report on social media, the physician added, "Former PM NawazSharif is detected to have critically low Platelet Count that could be due to multiple pathologies and requires immediate in-hospital care."

"I have requested the concerned authorities to act in urgency," Malik added.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has also said that the government's act of not shifting the former prime minister earlier to a hospital for medical care was the worst example of political vengeance and insensitivity, the News International reported.

"If anything happens to Nawaz Sharif, we will blame Imran Khan for it," he said.

Sharif is currently under a 14-day physical remand granted by the NAB in connection to the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case.

The jailed leader was arrested by NAB on October 11 and was produced before an accountability court in Lahore. The court has ordered the accountability bureau to present Nawaz on October 25.

Sharif is already serving a seven-year imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday ordered disciplinary action against a judge who convicted former premier Nawaz Sharif, effectively giving a boost to Sharif's appeal against a seven-year jail term for corruption.

Sharif was convicted and jailed last year after failing to prove the source of income that had led to his ownership of a steel mill in Saudi Arabia. Under Pakistani law, that is taken as proof of corruption.

Sharif denied the charges that he said were politically motivated.

His party in July presented a video at a news conference apparently showing the judge who presided over Sharif's conviction, Arshad Malik, as saying he had been pressured into handing down a guilty verdict by individuals he did not identify who had compromising footage of him.

Malik later issued a statement denying he had been blackmailed to convict Sharif and saying the video had been manipulated.

Malik had already been removed from his position in an anti-corruption court and the Supreme Court on Friday ordered him to report back to the High Court in the city of Lahore.

"We expect that after his repatriation appropriate departmental disciplinary proceedings shall be initiated against him," the Supreme Court said in an order.

The Lahore High Court, shortly after receiving the ruling, issued an order suspending Malik from service until he faces an inquiry into his conduct, according to a copy of the order, seen by Reuters.

A seven-member committee would hold the inquiry from Monday, it said.

Malik could not be reached for comment.

The Supreme Court said Malik's "stinking conduct" in connection with the video scandal was abhorrent, and an appeals court should decide whether to consider it as evidence for any relief for Sharif.

An appeal against Sharif's conviction is pending before the Islamabad High Court. The Supreme Court said that was the proper forum to evaluate the video scandal.

Pakistan: Maryam Nawaz arrested for failing to appear before National Accountability Bureau

Pakistan's main opposition parties held protest rallies in cities across the country on Thursday, accusing Prime Minister Imran Khan's government of ruining the economy and seeking to intimidate and silence its opponents.

The so-called "Black Day" protests, a year after Khan's PTI party swept to power following a bitterly contested election, come amid mounting economic problems for Pakistan and a political climate that has grown increasingly angry.

Surging prices of fuel and everyday staples, a plunging currency that has lost a quarter of its value since the election and allegations of media censorship and stifling opposition voices have fuelled the protests.

"Every day in the presence of Imran Khan is a black day," Maryam Nawaz, leader of the PML-N party that was ousted from power in last year's election told a crowd of thousands of supporters in a football stadium in the western city of Quetta.

She accused Khan of accepting "dictation" from US President Donald Trump during his visit to Washington and proposed a march on the capital Islamabad but did not name a date.

In Karachi, Pakistan's commercial capital, thousands of supporters of the PPP, Pakistan's other main opposition party, gathered to hear party leader Bilawal Bhutto, son of the murdered former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Banners reading "PTI brought price hikes, PTI brought joblessness, PTI brought economic terrorism" hung over the main stage. There were similar protests in other cities including Lahore and Peshawar.

Khan's government came to power with Pakistan already nearing a balance of payments crisis, and this month agreed a $6 billion bailout with the International Monetary Fund that came with tough austerity conditions including more taxes and an agreement to let the rupee currency fall sharply.

It has dismissed the opposition protests and blamed the economic turmoil on massive corruption and economic mismanagement by previous governments, accusing their leaders of shifting millions of dollars out of the country illegally.

PML-N founder and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz' father, is currently serving a 7-year sentence on corruption charges. His successor, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, has also been arrested on corruption charges. He denies wrongdoing.

The arrests have fed the anger of opposition parties, who say the government has manipulated the justice system to crush its adversaries.

Earlier this month, PML-N officials produced video evidence they said showed the judge responsible for sentencing Nawaz Sharif had been blackmailed into convicting him. The judge, who said the PML-N had also attempted to blackmail him, has since been sacked from the court that decided the Nawaz case.

The 69-year-old former Prime Minister was convicted in the Al Azizia Steel Mills case and sentenced to seven years in jail. He is currently serving the sentence in Lahore`s Kot Lakhpat jail.

Express Tribune reported the government`s order days after Prime Minister Imran Khan told a gathering of Pakistani diaspora in the US that Nawaz eats home-made food in his air-conditioned jail with television in it and said he will ensure the "criminal" does not receive such treatment.

"Nawaz Sharif wants food from home in jail, he wants air conditioning in jail. But in a country where half the population has no air conditioning or TV, what kind of punishment would this be?," said Khan on July 21, while addressing Pakistani diaspora during his three-day visit to the United States.

"I am going to go back and make sure there is no air conditioning or TV for Nawaz Sharif who is a criminal. I know (PML-N leader) Maryam Bibi will make some noise, but I say to her, return the money. It`s as simple as that," he added.

Pakistan: Punjab government asks jail authorities to remove AC from Nawaz Sharif's cell

It seems Maryam Nawaz has found an unusual way to put forward her demand for the release of her father Nawaz Sharif from jail.

Recently, she was spotted wearing a black kurta with a monochrome picture of her father along with a message 'Free Nawaz Sharif'. She completed her look with black footwear.

This unusual way may be new for some but Maryam from many months has been consistent in her effort to highlight the issue of her father.

Maryam's Twitter display picture also shows a graphic poster demanding freedom for her father.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam on Tuesday announced nationwide protests across Pakistan aimed at demanding justice for jailed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, among other things.

"Insha' Allah I shall be leading protest rallies across Pak that will not only ask for justice for Nawaz Sharif but demand rule of law, freedom of expression, end to the manipulation of the entire system to punish public representatives, stealing people's mandate, the imposition of SELECTED," she had tweeted.

She further called on all Pakistanis who wish to live in a "free, democratic and just Pakistan" to join.

This comes after the PML-N Vice President released "proof" which purportedly showed that the there was a lack of evidence in convicting Nawaz in the Al Azizia Steel Mills case, due to which the former PM is currently serving a seven-year jail sentence in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The video caused a furore in Pakistan as it showed accountability judge Arshad Malik -- who convicted Nawaz -- making the alleged revelation.

The video has since been dismissed by all quarters, including Malik himself, who labelled the video to be fake.

He also claimed that Maryam had tried to bribe him during the former premier's trial.

Representatives of the Imran Khan-led PTI government had previously said that an investigation would be launched to gauge the authenticity of the tape.

Meanwhile, an accountability court on Friday rejected a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) application seeking legal proceeding again Maryam in a case filed against her using a bogus trust deed in the Avenfield properties case.

Prime Minister Imran Khan's government faces mounting pressure as rising prices and tough austerity policies under Pakistan's latest bailout from the International Monetary Fund are squeezing the middle class that helped carry it to power.

Rashid Mehmood owns a small shop selling children's clothing in Aabpara, the oldest market in the capital, Islamabad. He says he has faced a critical decline in sales over the past year, pointing to Khan's election last August.

The last six months had been "particularly harsh", he said.

"Do you see any customers coming into my store?" he asked as he stood in his empty shop, decorated with brightly coloured leggings and dresses.

He said had not made a sale in a week.

In normal times, Mehmood's store serves the kind of middle-class shoppers who in recent years have been behind an import-led consumption splurge that propped up growth and helped hide the problems of an economy riddled with inefficiency and without a strong export base.

Fed by low-interest rates, heavy borrowing and an over-valued rupee currency that, for a time at least, allowed imports to pour in, consumption gave an illusion of growth that has now been replaced by a severe economic hangover.

Like so many of its predecessors, Khan's government, which came to power vowing to root out corruption and create millions of jobs, has been forced to turn to the IMF to prevent a balance-of-payments crisis as the money runs out.

Economic growth, which reached 5.5 per cent in the fiscal year to June 2018, is expected to slow to 2.4 per cent this financial year, according to IMF estimates, barely enough to keep pace with the growth in a population that now numbers 208 million.

The rupee has lost about a quarter of its value in a slide that has driven up fuel costs and helped push a relentless increase in prices for food and other necessities.

The central bank, which this week raised interest rates to 13.25 per cent, expects inflation to average as much as 12 per cent this year.

As ever, the poorest have been hit hardest. But the squeeze on middle-income households poses a special challenge for Khan, who has enjoyed wide support among an urban middle class that has grown over the past two decades as poverty levels have come down from two-thirds of the population to about a quarter.

Further along in Aabpara market, Abida Jahan has come with her family from Haripur town, a couple of hours drive away, after the food-processing factory her husband worked in was shut down. They are looking for a gift to celebrate their daughter's 13th birthday.

However, the surge in prices has meant that they will likely go home empty handed.

"This is the same government that promised to decrease oil prices to 45 rupees," says Abida's husband, recalling that Khan's PTI party had promised to halve the price of fuel and build a new welfare state.

Shopping malls

Pakistan's growing middle class has helped reshape its urban landscape, symbolizing a promise of upward mobility.

Shopping malls with foreign retail brands and fast-food franchises have proliferated in recent years, serving a middle class who "define themselves by what they can buy and where they can eat", says Ammara Maqsood, author of The New Pakistani Middle Class.

In the first decade of the century, economic growth fuelled by privatisation led families to new prosperity marked by their ability to buy a motorbike, rent a home or send their children to private school.

Now businesses supplying consumers with everything from mobile phones to clothing, motorbikes, and cars bought on hire purchase are feeling the squeeze.

"It's a multiple effect," said Fatima Azim, chief executive of Azim Motors, which has a joint venture with Japanese car maker Suzuki Motors supplying small cars and motorbikes to mainly lower-middle-class customers.

"Income has not increased at all so no matter what, if they are going to a shopping mall or wherever, they are being affected," she said.

The government has placed the blame squarely on the corruption of past governments, notably that of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who championed big infrastructure projects that spurred growth but drained currency reserves.

Sharif is now serving a seven-year sentence for a corruption conviction he said was politically motivated.

How convincing the government's argument will be as the crisis bites remains to be seen and a nationwide strike by wholesalers and traders last weekend gave some taste of the growing unhappiness.

"Let's be honest, it feels like we are the ones who are being punished for forcing out the crooks," says Fawad Subhani, who owns a domestic appliance store in Islamabad.

"They were thieves, but they were thieves who also had money and friends with money."

A senior Pakistani judge was sacked on Friday following a scandal over blackmail claims relating to the jailing of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on corruption charges, the law ministry said.

The removal of accountability court judge Arshad Malik prompted immediate calls by Sharif's PML-N party for the release of the 69-year-old former premier, who is serving a seven-year jail sentence.

"The decision against Nawaz Sharif should be dismissed and he should be released immediately," party spokeswoman Marriyum Aurangzeb said, adding that Sharif's conviction should be considered "void".

The PML-N has disputed the conviction and last week party leaders presented a video apparently showing Malik saying he had been pressured into ruling in favour of conviction by individuals with compromising footage against him.

Malik later issued a statement denying he had been blackmailed to convict Sharif and said the video had been manipulated. He also declared in an affidavit he had been offered bribes followed by blackmail threats by figures close to Sharif to rule in favour of the former premier.

After days of growing pressure, Islamabad High Court asked the law ministry to remove him from his position.

"Judge Arshad Malik was asked to stop working based on the alleged video and the press release," Law Minister Farogh Naseem told a news conference.

The scandal adds to an already heated political climate in Pakistan where Prime Minister Imran Khan's government, which came to power last year vowing to root out corruption, has been facing increasing economic difficulties.

Earlier this month it agreed to a $6 billion bailout deal with the International Monetary Fund, which has demanded a tough package of austerity measures.

As the problems have mounted, opposition parties have stepped up attacks, accusing the government and its allies in the powerful military establishment of crushing dissent and orchestrating Sharif's removal from power and conviction.

In her petition, Maryam had complained that in spite of her father having had informed the jail about his deteriorating health due to angina, they did not bother to cater to his medical needs.

During the hearing, the provincial law officer told the court that Nawaz has submitted no application seeking permission to be examined by his doctor.

He claimed that the former PM is being provided with maximum facilities. The law officer further said that the government does not object to Dr. Adnan meeting Nawaz, but is against the fact that the physician would start issuing statements after meeting Nawaz.

According to Maryam's statement in the court, 70-year-old Nawaz is suffering from multiple ailments, including hypertension as well as serious heart and kidney conditions.

Pakistan court allows Nawaz Sharif's personal physician to visit him in jail

An accountability court here on Tuesday summoned jailed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter, Maryam Nawaz Safdar, to appear before it on July 19 in connection with presenting fake trust deed in the Avenfield reference.

The Pakistan chapter of the Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) on Monday urged the country's government to ensure the safety of senior woman journalist Asma Shirazi following two recent break-in attempts at her home.

In a statement carried out by website Medium.com, the CFWIJ has said that a police investigation into the two break-in attempts at Shirazi's Islamabad home suggests that they intended towards intimidating and silencing the senior journalist.

Furthermore, Shirazi has been the victim of cyber trolling in the past one year, especially after her 2018 interview with former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif.

Since then, she has been a target of several "unprecedented online campaigns" that accuse her of biased journalism and corruption.

"With sincere hopefulness, we urge Pakistan's PM Imran Khan in the new Pakistan, to ensure safety to Asma Shirazi," the statement read.

"One important element of doing so would be for the government to find perpetrators behind threats online and offline and punish them for obstructing the public's right to free and fair journalism," the statement read.

The group has also asked the Pakistani government to find ways to "stop the online trolling that Asma and other journalists in the country have been facing.

These incidents are indicative of the risk journalists like Asma are facing in the country, and obstruct their ability to do fair and unbiased journalism.

"We urge the government to invest solid efforts to put a stop to impunity when women journalists get attacked this way.

We look forward to seeing visible efforts in this direction and will stay tuned for the results," the statement concluded.

On Saturday, Maryam, along with two senior PML-N leaders Shehbaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, had released a video purportedly showing judge Malik claiming that there was a lack of evidence against Sharif in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

Denying Maryam's allegations in a press statement cited by ARY News on Sunday, the judge said that the video clip is not representative of his conversation with PML-N member Nasir Butt.

"PML-N, Nawaz's family, tried to bribe me during the trial and when I did not cooperate, they threatened," Malik said.

"If I had to succumb to pressure or threats, I would not acquit him in one case and convict him in the other," he stressed.

In the video, the judge is seen purportedly speaking to Butt and claiming that he was coerced to hand down the prison sentence to Sharif despite there being no proof of corruption against the deposed premier.

On his part, Malik admitted that he knew Butt and his brother and said they were old acquaintances.

The video clip, played at the joint press conference addressed by senior PML-N leaders, purportedly showed the accountability court judge speaking to a PML-N worker named Nasir Butt and claiming that he was coerced to hand down the prison sentence to Sharif despite there being no proof of corruption against the deposed premier, The Express Tribune reported.

"No evidence that a single penny has been shifted from Pakistan. No evidence of shifting any money by accused from Pakistan," Maryam translated the judge as saying from the video.

"No evidence of any embezzlement of funds by Hussain in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia," she further quoted the judge from the video.

"No link between Nawaz and the properties in London," Maryam quoted judge Malik as saying.

The judge was "blackmailed" into handing down the sentence against Sharif after some people threatened that they would release a private video of his, Maryam alleged.

She added that the judge did not write the sentence but "was made to write" the prison sentence for her embattled father who is currently serving seven-year-sentence in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail.

Maryam also claimed that the judge was under immense pressure to send the former prime minister to jail, and that he had contemplated committing suicide several times since.

Speaking at the press conference, she termed the alleged video "divine intervention" which had arrived to help her father at a time when he had given up hopes of getting justice from the courts.

She further hoped that the Supreme Court would take notice of this `evidence` and urged that her father should be respectfully acquitted from the courts.
