The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruled that the medical reports of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were vague, and subsequently dismissed his petition seeking suspension of his sentence on medical grounds.

A division bench of the IHC, comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, on Friday expressed confidence over the medical treatment provided to the former prime minister by the authorities of Kot Lakhpat jail, where Sharif is serving a seven-year prison sentence since his conviction in a corruption case last December, Dawn reported.

In the petition, Sharif had sought suspension of his sentence and subsequent release on bail owing to his 'deteriorating' health condition.

Sharif's counsel, Khawaja Haris Ahmed, also argued before the Court that a special medical board, including senior doctors of the Sharif Medical City, opined that since Sharif was seriously suffering from multiple ailments and the required facilities were not available in Pakistan, he should receive medical treatment abroad preferably from doctors who treated him in the past.

The lawyer informed that besides cardiac problems, high blood pressure, and diabetic and renal disorders, the former Prime Minister is also facing intense depression, especially since the demise of his spouse.

However, the judge bench further expressed doubts over the veracity of the opinion of the foreign-based specialist doctors who recommended Sharif`s treatment abroad as the written order stated, "the opinions are of private doctors, the veracity of which, cannot be determined".The order said, "final report of Sharif Medical City and the recommendations of foreign doctors are vague".

It should also be noted that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), in a written reply to Sharif`s petition, had declared that the leader is not suffering from any "life-threatening" disease and expressed doubt over reports of the medical board constituted to examine his health.

The detailed order explained that "right to life is undoubtedly is a fundamental right...if the prisoner is being provided adequate medical treatment, then release on bail is not a ground available to him".

Court says Nawaz Sharif's medical reports are vague, dismisses petition

Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of imprisoned former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Thursday claimed that authorities in Kot Lakhapat jail in Lahore did not allow her father to meet his cardiologist "despite suffering recurring angina or heart ailments."

In a series of tweets, Maryam, who is also the vice president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said that her father was only allowed to meet five members of his immediate family under strict surveillance, calling it to be a violation of basic human rights.

"Today only five members (close blood relatives) were allowed to meet MNS (Nawaz Sharif), that too under strict surveillance. This is violation of basic human rights. If this is Jaali hakoomat`s response to my conviction and principled stance, I am NOT going to be a passive spectator. Beware," Maryam wrote on Twitter."

Despite recurring angina, MNS`s cardiologist is not being given access to him. Even today he was made to wait outside jail for two hours and sent back without meeting. Shame on Jaali-e-Azam," she added.

Last week, Maryam had claimed that her family was not informed about his third heart attack in Adiala Jail last year.

Maryam showed a discharge certificate which highlighted that the former Prime Minister had suffered a heart attack last July and that the government, along with jail authorities, had been negligent, according to The Express Tribune.

The father-daughter duo was in jail when the incident had occurred last year. She was asked to convince her father to go to the hospital at that time.

Maryam said she was not informed what had happened to her father but was only told that he was kept in the coronary care unit (CCU) for two to three days.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday stated that no country had approached him to strike any concessional deal with Sharif to provide him with a safe exit from Pakistan on grounds of medical health.

Addressing the parliamentary committee here, Khan said no National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO)-like concession deal would be made with Mr Sharif.

"We will not grant any NRO to Nawaz Sharif and national wealth looted by former rulers will be recovered at any cost," he added.

Khan stated that the opposition was using "pressure tactics" to seek NRO for Sharif and evade accountability for corruption.

The NRO was a controversial ordinance issued by the former President Pervez Musharraf in 2007 granting pardon to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats who were accused of corruption and money laundering.

However, Khan said he was expecting that Turkey would definitely ask him to give some relaxation to the jailed leader who had been convicted of corruption by the accountability court of Islamabad in Al Azizia Steel Mill case, Dawn reported.

Despite recurring angina, cardiologist not allowed to visit Nawaz Sharif, claims his daughter

Jailed Pakistani leader Nawaz Sharif's family was not informed about his third heart attack in Adiala Jail last year, claimed his daughter and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Saturday.

"I was worried and could sense something was wrong but I was not told anything. I was asked to convince my father to go to the hospital and he was reluctant to leave me alone. My father's cardiologist was also called from Lahore to assess the situation," she told Pakistani media.

The PML-N Vice President said that she was not informed what had happened to her father, but was only told that he was kept in the coronary care unit (CCU) for two to three days.

Maryam also questioned why Nawaz was not given relief from the courts due to his medical condition despite having all his medical reports in place.

Quoting medical professionals, Maryam further went on to highlight that the former Prime Minister was in need of another bypass surgery, adding that if his health deteriorates, "all those involved would be held responsible."

Speaking to the media, she also added that her meetings with her father were also being monitored.

"When I went to meet him there was a man there and when we asked he said he was assigned to overlook the meeting. Even prisoners are supposed to have some rights," she said.

Maryam also claimed that she met a doctor who had monitored Nawaz's health. The doctor told her that authorities had decreased Nawaz's health severity as they were "afraid of losing their jobs."

"Mian Sahib needs to undergo a number of surgeries and all that could not be done in the six weeks he was out of jail," she said while speaking about the six weeks reprieve given to the former Prime Minister.

Nawaz Sharif's third heart attack in jail concealed from family claims Maryam

There is a serious threat to the life of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif due to lack of medical care, his daughter Maryam said Saturday as she vowed to not let his father meet the fate of ex-Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi.

Morsi, who became the first democratically elected President of Egypt in 2012 and was ousted a year later by the military, died on Monday after fainting during a session in court.

"Nawaz Sharif's condition is not stable. Doctors at the jail even did not know that he had suffered a heart attack this week and offered no treatment to him," Maryam said in a press conference here.

Sharif, 69, is serving a seven-year imprisonment in Al-Azizia corruption case at the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

Maryam said the doctors were "reluctant" to treat the Sharif as it is a high profile and complicated case.

She said 80 per cent of Sharif's medical problems were not being highlighted in his reports as every word is being scrutinised by the jail authorities.

"Troponin levels in Nawaz's blood are found to be high because of heart attack...We will not let the three-time prime minister meet the fate of Morsi. Neither Pakistan is Egypt nor Nawaz Sharif is Mohammad Morsi," Maryam said, adding that she would go to any extend to get justice for her father.

She said it is not that her father's treatment is not possible, but the problem is doctors are "very much reluctant" to treat Sharif as it is a high profile and complicated case.

"That is why we had requested the court for his treatment abroad where doctors are familiar with his medical history," Maryam said.

On Thursday, the Islamabad High Court had rejected Sharif's plea seeking bail on medical grounds.

Maryam also said that on the direction of "puppet prime minister Imran Khan" Nawaz Sharif's conversation with his family members and party leaders in jail were bugged.

Nawaz Sharif won't become Morsi of Pakistan: Maryam

A two-judge Islamabad High Court (IHC) bench comprising Justices Aamer Farooq and Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani rejected the plea to grant bail to 69-year-old Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo after hearing arguments by his lawyer Khawaja Harris.

During previous hearings of the case, Haris told the court that his client was suffering from multiple dangerous diseases including diabetes, blood pressure and cardiac-related problems that cannot be treated in Pakistan, pleading to the bench to grant him bail as his life is in danger.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor Jahanzeb Bharwana opposed the bail plea by saying adequate medical care was given to the former premier and and asked the court to dismiss the petition.

Sharif files plea in court seeking permission to submit more medical reports

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif on Thursday accused Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan of indulging in corruption and targetting his opponents for political benefits, claiming that the cricketer-turned-politician will be "thrown out of the stadium by spectators."

"Imran Khan is a player who will soon be thrown out of the stadium by spectators. His Bani Gala residence is in the midst of corruption. He should be ashamed of himself," Geo News quoted Sharif as saying while speaking to reporters at Kot Lakhpat prison.

The former Pakistan prime minister called Khan "incompetent" and claimed that his "downfall is imminent."

"We (PML-N) came into power through the public's mandate and they (PTI) do not have that. I am neither a seer nor a fortune teller. But I know that Imran Khan's downfall is imminent. Imran Khan is incompetent and to hide his incompetence, he is blaming the previous government. His incompetence has brought the country to the edge of destruction," Sharif said.

He alleged that the ruling government was putting people behind the bars without any proof.

Chiding the Khan-led dispensation over the IMF deal, Sharif said, "We had said goodbye to the IMF and now they are bowing down in front of them. PML-N had left full coffers, built motorways and took steps to control inflation. Imran Khan had said he would commit suicide if he ever went to IMF. But he did not do so and the nation is suffering."

"During our tenure, the dollar was in control and our exports were increasing. If Imran Khan was not the selected prime minister then the country would not be in this condition. He has disheartened the nation in just 10 months," he added.

His comments came after former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari and Punjab Opposition leader Hamza Shahbaz were arrested in cases related to money laundering and corruption earlier this week.

In a late night address to the nation, Khan on Tuesday had said that he will form a high-powered commission to investigate graft and the rise of Pakistan's debts in the last one decade, at a time when the country is grappling to overcome a severe financial crisis.

The cricketer-turned-politician had urged his countrymen to declare their assets and pay off taxes by June 30.

Imran Khan will be thrown out of stadium by spectators: Nawaz Sharif

An accountability court Wednesday remanded Opposition leader in Pakistan's Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz to 14-day physical custody, a day after the country's anti-graft body arrested him in cases related to money laundering and corruption.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was granted Hamza's custody till June 26. Judge Jawadul Hassan pronounced the reserved verdict after hearing the arguments from both sides in the case.

A NAB team earlier brought Hamza, 44, to the court amid tight security. Hamza is the son of PML-N president and National Assembly opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif.

The NAB prosecutor informed the court that the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) vice president had failed to disclose the means from which he received Rs 500 million transferred into his account.

The NAB had requested for a 15-day physical remand of the PML-N leader. The court has ordered Hamza to be presented before the accountability court on June 26, Geo News reported.

Hamza was arrested Tuesday by the NAB officials after a two-member Lahore High Court (LHC) bench dismissed bail applications filed by him.

His arrest came a day after former president Asif Ali Zardari was arrested by NAB in Islamabad.

Hamza is accused of laundering money through his front men who are already in NAB's custody.

He is under investigation in the Ramzan Sugar Mills, Saaf Paani project and assets beyond known means of income cases.

The NAB has found evidence of money laundering on a massive scale through which Shehbaz and his family accumulated assets in the UK.

According to sources privy to NAB's investigation, the illegally accumulated assets are worth Rs 85 billion to Rs 100 billion and were bought during Shebaz's tenure as the Punjab Chief Minister.

In the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption case, Shehbaz and his son Hamza are accused of "fraudulently and dishonestly" causing a Rs 213 million loss to the national exchequer. Pakistan: Shehbaz Sharif returns from a 'quick' London visit

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Friday criticised the Imran Khan government for not allowing the family of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to meet him in jail even on the third day of Eid.

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a statement that by adopting such tactics Prime Minister Khan was "taking revenge for his (PM's) incompetence and ineptness", the Express Tribune reported.

She said that while Khan fully enjoyed the Eid celebrations, he did not allow the former premier, who has been incarcerated in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail since December last year, to meet his family even on Eid`s last day.

Meanwhile, Punjab government spokesperson Shahbaz Gill said that the PML-N had been left with no issue other than Sharif`s health.

He was quoted as saying that "Mian Sahib is quite healthy and living a normal life in jail".

He claimed that Sharif was denied a meeting with his family due to the terms of his prison sentence.

He said Sharif had met his family and over 225 party leaders and workers before Eid, while the family could meet him again on Saturday (today) as per jail authorities.

Referring to the former prime minister's routine of spending the last days of Ramazan and Eid in Saudi Arabia, Gill added that this was the first time when 'Mian Sahab' spent the Eid days in Pakistan only because he is imprisoned.

The three-time former Pakistani Prime Minister was sentenced to seven years in Lahore prison by an accountability court last year after he was found guilty in the Al Azizia Steel Mills corruption case.

The ailing Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader was granted bail on medical grounds by the Pakistani Supreme Court on March 26 for six weeks.

But the ousted leader returned to jail last month after the six-week bail expired on May 7 as the Supreme Court rejected his review petition seeking an extension to the bail.

Nawaz Sharif not allowed to meet family even on Eid

A team of Pakistan’s top anti-graft body has quizzed deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat Jail for over two hours over the illegal purchase and use of more than 30 bulletproof government vehicles from Germany.

A four-member National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team arrived at the Kot Lakhpat Jail (Lahore Central Prison) where the 69-year-old Sharif is serving a seven-year sentence awarded to him in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case.

A source told Dawn that Sharif insisted upon being given a questionnaire, to which he would reply with the help of his legal counsel.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Nawaz’s daughter, confirmed the investigation by the NAB team in jail where the former prime minister is being held since December 2018 after his conviction.

In a message on her Twitter account on Monday, Maryam rubbished the investigation, point fingers at “fake Prime Minister” Imran Khan who used the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s helicopter for personal use was above the law.

Earlier reports said the NAB team will record the three-time prime minister’s statement in the case of an alleged import of 34 bulletproof vehicles from Germany without payment of customs duty on any of them.

The anti-graft body said the cars were purchased without duty for guests of the 19th SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit in 2016, Geo News reported.

The SAARC Summit, however, did not take place as India boycotted the meeting after the Uri terror attack. Later, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives also pulled out of the summit, culminating in an indefinite postponement of the summit.

According to the NAB, Sharif added 20 of those 34 cars to his own motorcade, and he and his daughter Maryam Nawaz also used the bulletproof vehicles for their personal use.

Former Prime Minister and a member of the PML-N Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s statement has already been recorded, it said.

The anti-graft body also said that officers associated with the foreign ministry misused their authority by allocating the bulletproof cars for the Sharif’s family.

Pakistan: NAB questions jailed Nawaz Sharif over illegal purchase of bulletproof vehicles

Pakistan's election commission on Monday admitted a petition challenging the appointment of Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of ousted premier Nawaz Sharif, as a PML-N vice president on grounds that she is ineligible to hold a public office.

The petition filed by members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was heard by a three-member bench headed by the chief election commissioner, during which the bench issued a notice to Maryam seeking her reply.

The commission has fixed the hearing of the petition for June 17, Dawn newspaper reported.

On May 3, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif approved major changes to the party's structure, including Maryam's appointment as vice president of the party among a list of 16 vice presidents for the first time.

The petition argues that 45-year-old Maryam's appointment as a vice president of the PML-N is in conflict with the law and Constitution. It also covers the legal basis under which Maryam is ineligible to hold public office and includes a detailed mention of court decisions.

The PTI counsel in the hearing argued that an accountability court had declared Maryam to be a criminal in July 2018, adding that on September 19 that year, the Islamabad High Court had not dismissed her sentence.

Maryam, along with her husband Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar and her father and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was sentenced by an accountability court on corruption charges in Avenfield corruption case in June last year. The case is related to the purchase of four flats by the Sharif family in Avenfield House, Park Lane, London.

While Maryam was sentenced to seven years, her father was awarded a 10-year jail term. Safdar was given a one-year prison sentence. In September last year, the Islamabad High Court suspended the sentence of the trio.

The chief election commissioner pointed out that the suspension of a sentence doesn't mean that a trial court sentence has been removed.

The petitioners' counsel maintained that Maryam cannot retain the position as vice president, and added that after the accountability court's decision, the Supreme Court had also declared that she was ineligible to hold his party position, the newspaper reported.

While speaking to media after the hearing, one of the petitioners, Maleeka Ali Bokhari, said: "It will be a denial of the democratic system of Pakistan if Maryam remains a vice president of PML-N."

"We are hopeful that we will be successful, and remove Maryam from the party position," Bukhari said, adding that this way the democratic system would be strengthened.

A team of Pakistan's top anti-graft body will quiz deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat Jail here on Monday over the illegal purchase and use of more than 30 bulletproof government vehicles from Germany. The four-member National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team has arrived at the Kot Lakhpat Jail (Lahore Central Prison) where the 69-year-old Sharif is serving a seven-year sentence awarded to him in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case. The team will record the three-time prime minister's statement in the case of an alleged import of 34 bulletproof vehicles from Germany without payment of customs duty on any of them. The anti-graft body said the cars were purchased without duty for guests of the 19th SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit in 2016, Geo News reported. According to NAB, Sharif added 20 of those 34 cars to his own motorcade, and he and his daughter Maryam Nawaz also used the vehicles for their personal use. Pakistan: NAB to record jailed Nawaz Sharif's statement over illegal purchase of bulletproof vehicles

Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking bail on medical grounds in the Al-Azizia corruption case.

The Supreme Court earlier this month dismissed the 69-year-old three-time prime minister's review petition seeking permanent bail on medical grounds and the permission to go abroad for treatment.

Opinions of specialist doctors from Switzerland, the US and the UK have been included in the petition filed at the high court by Sharif's counsel Khawaja Haris, the Express Tribune reported.

"According to the medical board, Nawaz is suffering from numerous diseases," the petition said.

According to the reports, doctors recommended that Sharif's condition is life-threatening. Tension and stress can prove to be threatening to his life, it added.

Even Sharif's blood and sugar levels have not normalised, the petition went on to add.

The petition stated that all members of the special medical board, along with doctors associated with doctors hospital Lahore, Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore and National Hospital Lahore as well as medical specialists from UK, USA and Switzerland were unanimous that Sharif's treatment is not possible in jail premises.

The former premier, who has been serving a seven-year prison term at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail since December 24, 2018, was granted a six-week bail on March 26 to get medical treatment. However, Sharif filed a civil review petition against the order on April 27.

The petition requested the court to allow Sharif get medical treatment abroad, claiming that the former prime minister was suffering from acute anxiety and depression that would lead to sudden death.

It said the medical professionals seeing the former premier in Pakistan recommend that he should be treated by his regular practitioners in the United Kingdom. It also said that there was a difference between the apex court's March 26 oral order and the written order.

After reaching jail, Sharif thanked his party workers for turning up in large numbers. "I do not have words to thank the workers who turned up in thousands to express solidarity. It is midnight but the workers are still here with me. It is an amazing scene," he said in a message.

The massive support for the PML-N leader included a large number of party workers from different parts of Punjab province who turned up for the rally en-route to the jail. Sharif's daughter Maryam accompanied her father in his car and posted images online of the reception their entourage got from the public.

"The roads to the jail from Jati Umra were jampacked. Only heads and long queues of motorists," Maryam tweeted. Amidst sloganeering in support of Sharif, party workers have seen showering rose petals at his car.

"The people know why I am being punished. What sin I have committed... They know. But I am optimistic that soon the black night of this oppression will end and I will get released from jail," Sharif said.

Though Sharif was to reach jail before midnight, he reported half-an-hour late. The Punjab Home Department directed the jail authorities to receive Sharif and shift him to the barrack, officials said. He was imprisoned in Adiyala Jail and shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail on request.

Former Pakistan PM Sharif's medical condition life-threatening: Maryam Nawaz

Pakistan's Supreme Court has rejected an appeal filed on behalf of ousted former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for an early hearing of his petition seeking bail on medical grounds and to have his sentence suspended in the Al-Azizia corruption case.

The apex court said on Monday that the case against the Islamabad High Court's verdict will be heard when its turn comes.

Sharif, 69, was on December 24 last year sentenced to seven years in prison by an anti-corruption court in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case for owning a steel factory abroad without disclosing its ownership.

On Friday, senior counsel Khawaja Haris Ahmed filed an appeal before the Supreme Court on behalf of the former premier, asking the apex court to grant him bail after suspending the seven-year sentence, the Dawn newspaper reported.

But the Supreme Court Registrar Office returned the application for early hearing on the grounds that no special treatment could be accorded and the routine procedure would be followed to take up the matter, it said.

Sharif had filed an appeal in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to suspend his sentence in the Al-Azizia case until the final verdict on his appeal is announced. However, the court rejected his plea on February 25.

He had requested bail on the grounds that his health was deteriorating in jail.

The IHC in its order had held that none of the medical reports about Sharif's condition suggested that his continued incarceration would in any way be detrimental to his life, adding that he had been hospitalised time and again since January whenever he made complaints about his indisposition.

Sharif has challenged this verdict in the Supreme Court and filed a separate petition for a quick hearing on March 6.

His appeal contends that the IHC order was in violation of his fundamental right to life as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The former premier is currently incarcerated at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore where he is serving the seven-year sentence.

On February 14, around 40 CRPF personnel were killed after a terrorist affiliated to Pakistan-sponsored Jaish-e-Mohamed terror organisation pounded an IED laden vehicle into the security forces convoy. 12 days after the attack, India in its "non-military" "pre-emptive" strike targeted JeM camp in Balakot in Pakistan and in which a large number of terrorists are believed to have been killed.

Several leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) including former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former foreign minister Khawaja Asif were present inside the court when the verdict was announced.

Asif said, "we will go for appeal against the verdict" which will be filed in the Supreme Court.

Dozens of PML-N supporters were also present outside the court premises and raised slogans against the verdict.

Last month, he filed the bail application through his counsel Khawaja Haris for bail on medical reasons as he developed heart-related medical complications in jail.

Last week, the court heard the counsel and lawyers of the anti-corruption body National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and reserved the verdict for February 25.

Additional police and paramilitary personnel were deployed around the court to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, Sharif is being treated at the Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, where he has been shifted a few weeks ago.
