Federal prosecutors have charged more than 300 people for involvement in the January 6 attack that led to five deaths, including that of a police officer. Those arrested include members of armed militia groups such as the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.

Over 150&nbsp;National&nbsp;Guard troops&nbsp;deployed to Washington, D.C., to provide security for President Joe Biden's inauguration have tested positive for the coronavirus, a US&nbsp;official said on Friday.

The US&nbsp;government imposed unprecedented security measures in the city following the deadly January&nbsp;6 attack on the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump, including fences topped with razor wire and checkpoints manned by&nbsp;National&nbsp;Guard.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the number of&nbsp;National&nbsp;Guard&nbsp;troops who tested positive could rise but was still a small fraction of the more than 25,000 troops deployed in the city over the past few days.

The United States reported more than 4,000 daily deaths from COVID-19 for a second consecutive day on Thursday, bringing the cumulative number of US&nbsp;lives lost to almost 410,000.

The military has said arrangements are being made for thousands of troops to return home, and that about 15,000 are expected to leave Washington within the next five to 10 days.

Some 7,000&nbsp;National&nbsp;Guard&nbsp;personnel are expected to stay at least through the end of the month, officials have said. A smaller number of troops could stay longer.

Photos that spread quickly over the internet showed troops stretched out under fluorescent lights in parking slots, with few toilets, outlets for charging phones or other facilities.

Some members of Congress, noting that many of the troops came from their home states, voiced outrage.

Newsom said most of the roughly 360 National Guard members deployed to the border would be reassigned to other duties in the state, with about 100 remaining behind as part of a task force targeting drug trafficking and cartels.

"This whole border issue is a manufactured crisis. We are not interested in participating in this political theatre," Newsom said at an afternoon news conference in Sacramento.

The governor, a Democrat who took office in January, said border crossings were at their lowest level since 1971 and that the state's undocumented population had dropped to a more than 10-year low.

"This is pure politics, period full stop," he said.

The move was a rebuke to President Donald Trump, who won the election in 2016 partly on a populist pledge to build a wall on the southern US border which he said in his campaign Mexico would pay for.

Trump's demand for $5.7 billion to help build that wall was central to a 35-day partial US government shutdown that ended last month. He agreed to reopen the government for three weeks to allow lawmakers time to find a compromise and avert another shutdown on February 15.

Newsom's predecessor, Governor Jerry Brown, agreed to send National Guard troops to the border last April after reaching agreement with the Trump administration that they would focus on fighting criminal gangs and smugglers and not enforce immigration laws.
