Over 200 academicians on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the protests taking place in various educational institutions across the country, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi so that a cordial atmosphere is restored on the campuses as soon as possible.

"The Leftists are spreading rumours. Recently, I saw in a TV interview where somebody said that if you are bringing (persecuted) Hindus (in India), then you will definitely evict the Muslims. What kind of logic is this? By spreading lies, an atmosphere has been created where education is not being given attention and is shown in poor light. This can be harmful to the country," Sardar Patel University (SPU) Vice Chancellor Prof Shirish Kulkarni told ANI in Vadodara. Kulkarni along with the other academicians has written to the Prime Minister expressing concern over the `prevailing atmosphere` in educational institutions, stating that `a disruptive far-left agenda is being pursued in the name of student politics.` "It seems that the leftists are attempting to shut down education (in JNU) through these tactics. They should be stopped and prohibition should be put on them. Education should not be stopped. Education should remain independent. They can block roads and do other things, but education should never be stopped. That is why we decided to write a letter to the Prime Minister in this regard," said Prof Kulkarni. Echoing similar sentiments, former Himachal Pradesh University Vice Chancellor Prof Sunil Gupta said that if the protests in the JNU do not end soon, the name and fame of the varsity will be lost. "The main purpose of writing a letter to the Prime Minister that he should take strict cognizance about the happenings in JNU, which has taken place for the last two to three months. There should be a dialogue with the student organisations or a certain path should be there so that the protests are over. It must end very soon or else the name and fame the JNU has earned over the years will vanish," Gupta told ANI in Panchkula.

On Tuesday, Thackeray was unanimously elected as the leader of the tri-party alliance. The political development came after BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis submitted his resignation as Chief Minister to the Governor on Tuesday as "the BJP fell short of the required number of MLAs to win the scheduled floor test". Supreme Court had asked the Fadnavis government to prove its majority in the 288-member Assembly before 5 pm on Wednesday. In a sudden turn of events, both Fadnavis and NCP leader Ajit Pawar were administered oath as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of the state, respectively, on Saturday morning, nixing Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP`s bid to form government in the state. The diplomatic community in Delhi is all set to go into a huddle over the pollution menace in Delhi. The schedule of the meeting is yet to be finalised but it comes even as the pollution level has reached a hazardous level in the city with the onset of the winters.

The diplomatic community in Delhi is all set to go into a huddle over the pollution menace in Delhi. The schedule of the meeting is yet to be finalised but it comes even as the pollution level has reached a hazardous level in the city with the onset of the winters. During the meet, a source told WION, " The diplomatic corps will not only talk about the issue but also hear suggestions of foreign diplomats stationed in Delhi", adding further, "It affects all of Delhi residents not only diplomatic corps" A number of foreign envoys and diplomats have expressed concerns about the rising pollution level in the city, with one diplomat saying, "Many people are affected. By embassy doctor's estimate, a cough that can go in a week goes on for a month or more even is a person is fine." Explaining, "we suffer as much as any other Delhi residents, we breath same air, and we have no special air purifying equipment". Another envoy said, "Many are very concerned about their health and their staff and their families. There is also the sensation that more can be done to avoid this yearly phenomenon, but little is done about it" An envoy who just took charge and began his tenure in Delhi said, "This is my first time to experience this! Really severe!" In fact, the flight of one envoy was diverted to another city due to low visibility in the national capital. Visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week called for replacing diesel buses with electric buses and said, "whosoever looked at the pollution level in Delhi will find a good argument to replace more of the buses". The air quality index of Delhi crossed 1000 in many parts on Sunday and the poor visibility led to the diversion of flights. Schools have been closed in the National capital as a preventive measure. Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi PK Mishra called for a high-level meeting on the high pollution level and it has been decided that the Cabinet Secretary will monitor the situation with states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi on a daily basis.
