PM Modi's handling of coronavirus crisis in India needs to be recognised

When COVID-19 originated in Wuhan in China and China concealed the information for some months and World Health Organisation (WHO) also 'co-operated' with China, no one thought that COVID-19 crisis would shake the world like it has now.

When it was known that COVID-19 virus was spreading fast all over the world, many experts opined that India could be one of the worst-hit countries due to coronavirus considering it has a large population and high population density compared to other countries.

At present, the global COVID 19 tally stands at about 44.4 million cases and about 1.1 million deaths, with a percentage of death of around 2.5 per cent.

Europe has so far reported about 7.8 million cases and about 0.25 million deaths. Europe as a region is now reporting more daily cases than India, Brazil and the USA combined.

The success or otherwise of COVID-19 management should be seen not by the number of persons affected but also by the percentage of death reported among the persons affected.

Figures above highlight the fact that compared to some other countries like China, Brazil, Canada, USA and Russia. India has a greater population density.

In South Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines have high population density. Compared with Indonesia and the Philippines and other South Asian countries, the number of COVID-19 cases in India has been much higher. However, India has managed to keep the percentage of death at around 1.51 per cent.

In comparison to other South Asian countries and rest of the world, India's performance has to be judged on the basis of several factors such as high population density, percentage of people living below the poverty line and consequently, low immunity level, number of cases reported and the fact that 90 per cent of the people have recovered.

Given the figures above, it can clearly be seen that the Government of India under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi has managed COVID-19 reasonably well compared to other developed countries. Number of deaths in India has been only 1.5 per cent of the total number of cases and the recovery is around 90 per cent, which is much better than the world figures.

Considering the fact that COVID-19 vaccine is yet to be developed and produced on mass scale, Modi government's performance in managing COVID-19 crisis should be recognised.

The essence of Modi government's management of the crisis is that Modi has been continuously communicating with the people by addressing the nation at regular intervals. He meaningfully coordinated with the chief ministers of the state governments but gave broad guidelines and left it to the states to manage the situation as they deemed fit.

When Modi asked countrymen to applaud the doctors and para-medical staff for their commitment to handling the COVID-19 crisis by clapping for a few minutes, everyone responded with great enthusiasm. The same response was seen when he asked everyone to switch off the lights and light candles.

Moreover, when Modi wanted people to wear masks and observe social distancing, there was no protest from the people like in other countries like the USA. It is quite true that some people did not follow guidelines but was more due to indiscipline rather than opposition to the guidelines.

In a democracy like India, (some even call it chaotic democracy), people do not hesitate to conduct protests marches even for trivial reasons. A large number of people have lost jobs due to prolonged lockdown. People below the poverty line were the worst affected. It is extraordinary that Prime Minister Modi could manage this potentially explosive situation, without giving room for unrest and turmoil.

PM Modi's handling of coronavirus crisis in India needs to be recognised

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the country`s first seaplane service in Gujarat and undertook a journey on its inaugural flight from Sardar Sarovar in Kevadia to the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad.

The 45-minute seaplane service -- launched on the 145th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel -- connects the Statue of Unity at Kevadia with the Sabarmati riverfront 200 km away. The seaplane service was started by SpiceJet aviation company.

Modi also inaugurated a Water Aerodrome on the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. It is a part of a series of Water Aerodromes planned to bring the last-mile connectivity in the country.

Earlier, during his address on Sardar Patel`s birth anniversary, Modi said: "Today, seaplane service from the Sardar Sarovar to Sabarmati riverfront is also going to be launched. To see the Statue of Unity, the countrymen will now also have the option of seaplane service. All these efforts are going to give a big boost to tourism in this area."

The seaplanes with their ability to land and take-off from water surface help connect geographies or regions that otherwise are a challenge owing to tough topography and help bring the remotest parts of India into the mainstream aviation network without the high cost incurred on building airports and runways.

These smaller fixed-wing airplanes can land on lakes, and dams, and even gravel and grass, thus offering easy access to numerous tourist spots.

The service will be provided incentives and benefits under the central government`s `Udaan` scheme, which is getting implemented as per a tripartite agreement between the Gujarat government, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the Airports Authority of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with CEOs of leading global oil and gas companies on Monday at an annual event organised by the NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said that this is the fifth such event organised by the NITI Aayog and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and around 45 CEOs of major oil and gas companies will attend the roundtable this year.

The objective behind the meeting is to deliver a global platform to understand best-practices, discuss reforms, and inform strategies for accelerating investments into the Indian oil and gas value chain, the PMO said in a statement.

The annual interaction has gradually become one of the most important gatherings of not only intellectual debate but also of executive action, it said.

The event also grows in stature with the rise of India, the world's third-largest energy consumer, which is likely to see investment of over USD 300 billion by 2030 in the oil and gas sector to meet the rising demand, the PMO said.

The prime minister will interact with the CEOs at 5.30 pm IST on October 26 via video conference, the statement said.

India is an important player in the global oil and gas sector, being the third-largest consumer of crude oil and the fourth-largest LNG importer, the PMO said.

Realising the need for India to graduate from a passive consumer to an active and vocal stake-holder in the global oil and gas value chain, NITI Aayog initiated the first roundtable of global oil and gas CEOs with the prime minister in 2016.

The growth of the event was apparent as around 45-50 global CEOs and key stakeholders who shape the global oil and gas sector assembled every subsequent year to interact and discuss the issues and opportunities with the prime minister, the PMO said.
The impact of the annual global CEOs interaction can be seen in the gravity of discussion, quality of suggestions and the seriousness with which they are acted upon, it said.

India undergoing rapid change in mindsets as well as markets: PM Modi

Crossing another milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered 20th consecutive year as the democratically elected head of a government, without a break, on Wednesday.

The journey of the Prime Minister in public office began on October 7, 2001, as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. This was followed by three terms as the Gujarat CM in 2002, 2007 and 2012, respectively.

During the third term as the Gujarat CM, however, Modi fought the 2014 general elections. His popularity, which was going through the roof both inside and outside the State, led to the BJP declaring him as its prime ministerial candidate in 2013.

He had been projected as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the PM post.

Defeating the Congress-led government which held sway at the Centre, CM Modi left Gujarat to take over the reins at the Centre. Since then, he has solidified his position with the NDA coalition retaining its position in the Centre with an even bigger margin in the 2019 general elections.

"If the first term was fulfilling the needs of people then since 2019, PM Modi has set his sights on fulfilling the aspirations of 130 crore Indians. Jammu and Kashmir has finally been fully integrated in India and Article 370 is history. The Ram Mandir is now a reality with construction starting for a grand Ram Temple at the birth place of Prabhu Ram. Our farmers have finally been freed from artificially imposed chains on them and far-reaching, historic agriculture reforms are now a reality. A host of other reforms such as Labour Reforms, Coal Reforms, allowing private enterprise in the space sector, FDI reforms across the board and tax reforms have put in place a foundation for sustained years of economic growth," an article shared on the official website of PM Modi on the day read.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's journey to the head of an elected government started in 2001 in the backdrop of relief work for the devastating Bhuj earthquake.

The following years saw him rolling out several pro-people policies and actively reaching out to the people directly, leading to the formation of his image as a leader of the masses.

Further, upon becoming the Prime Minister, he continued the pro-people approach, which was further reflected in the various schemes such as Jan Dhan Yojana, the Mudra Yojana, the Jan Suraksha Yojana, the Ujjwala Yojana, the Saubhagya Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, the Pradhan Mantri Aawaas Yojana, the PM-Kisan Yojana, among others.

Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic phase too the pro-poor schemes continued, under which arrangements were made to provide foodgrains, jobs, financial help to migrant workers, farmers, among others during the lockdown phase.

As PM Modi enters the 20th consecutive year in public office, the mantra of 'development for all' continues to steer India ahead towards the goal of making an "Atmanirbhar Bharat".

Narendra Modi enters 20th year as democratically elected head of government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the majestic Atal Tunnel, beneath the lofty Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh`s Kullu district, would give new strength to India`s border infrastructure.

"It is an example of world-class border connectivity. There have been demands to improve border infrastructure but for a long time, such projects either couldn`t get out of planning stage or got stuck midway," Modi said in his address after dedicating the highway tunnel, one of the world`s most challenging and a marvel of engineering motorways, in the Himalayas to the nation.

The tunnel would be a lifeline for Ladakh and would boost border security.

Earlier, Modi inaugurated the 9.02km long Atal Tunnel from its south portal near here. It will connect Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh.

It is the longest highway tunnel in the world built at an altitude of 3,000 meters.

Also read: World's longest highway tunnel connecting Manali with Leh ready after 10 years

Modi said the Atal Tunnel, the dream of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpaye, is going to be "Sanjeevani Buti" for the residents of Lahaul-Spiti, especially during winters when the entire district "gets covered under snow and road connectivity through the Rohtang Pass gets snapped.

Praising the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a wing of the Defence Ministry, Modi said, "One of our top priorities is to strengthen the international border on all sides."

He blamed the previous government in the Centre for deliberately ignoring the projects of strategic importance.

"There is nothing more important for us than protecting the country. But the country has also seen a period when the defence interests of the country were compromised."

"Even in the case of Atal Tunnel, if the pace of the construction continued as in the previous governments it would have been completed by 2040," Modi, donning a Himachal cap, said.

"In the year 2002, Atalji laid the foundation stone of the approach road to the tunnel.

"After Atalji`s government, this work was forgotten. The situation was that by 2013-14, only 1,300 meters of the work for the tunnel was completed," said Modi.

"Work on Atal Tunnel was accelerated after 2014; in just six years, we completed the work of 26 years."

"My brothers and sisters of Himachal Pradesh can understand what it means to reduce the distance of three-four hours on the mountain with the completion of this tunnel," he said.

Also read: World's longest highway tunnel connecting Manali with Leh ready after 10 years Modi said the Atal Tunnel, the dream of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpaye, is going to be "Sanjeevani Buti" for the residents of Lahaul-Spiti, especially during winters when the entire district "gets covered under snow and road connectivity through the Rohtang Pass gets snapped. Praising the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a wing of the Defence Ministry, Modi said, "One of our top priorities is to strengthen the international border on all sides." He blamed the previous government in the Centre for deliberately ignoring the projects of strategic importance. "There is nothing more important for us than protecting the country. But the country has also seen a period when the defence interests of the country were compromised." "Even in the case of Atal Tunnel, if the pace of the construction continued as in the previous governments it would have been completed by 2040," Modi, donning a Himachal cap, said. Atal Tunnel will give new strength to border infrastructure: Modi

Asserting that the world also takes a leap ahead when India prospers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the clarion call for an 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' includes a vision of global welfare and sought support of the Indian diaspora to realise this dream.

He also underlined the need to amplify the rich history of Indian science and said many historical questions have been solved with the help of science over the last century.

"India's clarion call of an 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Sel-Reliant India) includes a vision of global welfare. To realise this dream, I invite you all and seek your support," Modi said at the inauguration of?the Vaishvik Bhartiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) Summit, a global virtual summit of overseas and resident Indian researchers and academicians being organised from October 2-31, 2020.

"Recently India introduced pioneering space reforms. These reforms provide opportunities for both industry and the academia," Modi said while listing numerous steps taken by his government to boost science, research and innovation.

He further said the government wants top-class scientific research to help the farmers.

"Our agricultural research scientists have worked hard to ramp up our production of pulses. Today we import only a very small fraction of our pulses. Our food-grain production has hit a record high," he said.

Modi further said his government is encouraging indigenous vaccine production.

"Four new vaccines were introduced into our communication programme in 2014 including an indigenously developed Rotavirus vaccine," he said.

PM Modi said the VAIBHAV summit has brought together eminent people from India as well as from abroad, making it a confluence of great minds from across the world.

"You have also made some good suggestions for improving the research ecosystem in India. I hope this summit is going to be very productive," he told the participants.

Referring to the time periods like the stone age, the bronze age, the iron age, the space age and the digital age, Modi said each of those marked some key technological advancements.

"I would like to thank the scientists who offered their suggestions and ideas today. You have brilliantly covered many subjects. Most of you highlighted the importance of greater collaboration between the Indian academic and research ecosystem with their foreign counterparts," he said.

The aim of the summit is to bring Indian origin luminaries in academic institutes and R&D organisations across the world and resident counterparts on a single platform to debate upon collaboration mechanisms to strengthen academic and S&T (science and technology) base in India for global development.

The inauguration was followed by online deliberation sessions.

The initiative involves multiple levels of interactions among overseas experts and Indian counterparts over a month-long series of webinars and video conferences, among other activities. More than 3,000 overseas Indian origin academicians and scientists from 55 countries and more than 10,000 resident academicians and scientists are taking part in the summit.

About 200 academic institutes and S&T departments, led by Principal Scientific Advisor, are organising the summit running through October.

Over 1,500 panelists from 40 countries, 200 leading Indian R&D and academic institutions are virtually deliberating in 18 different areas and 80 topics in more than 200 deliberation sessions.

The concluding session is planned on October 31 on the occasion of Sardar Patel Jayanti.

Self-Reliant India Mission includes vision for global welfare: PM Modi

A top Democratic senator has introduced a legislation in the US Senate to establish a forum for cooperation with India on clean energy technologies and energy transmission.

Introduced by Senator Robert Menendez, a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Prioritising Clean Energy and Climate Cooperation with India Act seeks to establish the US-India Clean Energy and Power Transmission Partnership (CEPTP) as the main forum for cooperation between the two nations on clean energy technologies.

The activities under the CEPTP include promoting joint research and development on clean energy technologies, encouraging US private investment in the Indian clean energy market and supporting initiatives to develop new and renewable energy generation capacity in India.

The legislation also promotes US-India cooperation on climate resilience and risk reduction, a statement said.

''Given the shared threat of climate change and India's growing need for electricity, there is a strong case to be made for strengthening the US-India clean energy partnership,'' Menendez said.

''In that vein, I am introducing this legislation having witnessed firsthand the positive results that come when our nations work as a team to tackle common challenges,'' he said.

It also sought America's participation in the International Solar Alliance led by India which is playing a key role in mobilising significant international investment in solar energy.

It urged the US to promote research, development and private sector cooperation on the production of electric vehicles and the planning and execution of an expansive charging station network to support extensive use of electric vehicles.

The Senate legislation, running into 39 pages, asks the Trump administration to support a report, within 90 days of its passage, detailing the scope and nature of the US' participation in Mission Innovation.

Observing that the US should support the Power for All initiative created by the Government of India through technical and other forms of assistance, the legislation said that the US should support the ambitious renewable energy generation goals set by the India through technical and other forms of assistance.

Increased demand for refrigeration and air conditioning in India, and the adoption of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, done at Montreal September 16, 1987, are driving innovation and investments in next-generation refrigeration equipment and refrigerants in India; it said.

As such the legislation says that enhanced United States-India bilateral cooperation and engagement on the development of technologies and chemicals that are compliant with the Kigali Amendment are in the interest of US industry leaders in the refrigeration and chemical coolant industries.

Menendez was part of a congressional delegation to India in the fall of 2019, during which he engaged with India's minister of New and Renewable Energy and Indian business leaders to discuss how the US and India can address the threat of climate change and deepen cooperation on clean energy production.

''By establishing the US-India Clean Energy and Power Transmission Partnership, we are laying the groundwork for successful partnerships between not only the US and Indian governments, but also our universities and private sectors. I am proud to lead this effort to further strengthen our relationship with India,'' Menendez said.

The legislation also seeks to promotes lawful sharing of intellectual property between US and Indian private sector entities for renewable energy technology, air conditioning technology, and refrigeration systems technology.

Legislation introduced in US Senate to boost clean energy cooperation with India

A day after the prime ministers of India and Denmark met for a virtual summit, the latter's envoy, Freddy Svane, batted for diversification of the global chain initiative, saying his country was ready for it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier spoken about the need for alternate and diversified global supply chains at the summit and cited how India, Japan, Australia are coming together for supply chain initiative.

The envoy spoke exclusively to Wion's principal diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal about the Green Strategic partnership and explained how India's scale and Denmark's skills can come together. He also spoke about the Kim Davy issue -- that India raised during the virtual summit.

This was the fourth such summit of the Indian prime minister amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Wion: India and Denmark agreed on green strategic partnership. Please elaborate.

Freddy Svane: This was the first virtual summit between India and any European country and we had a specific agenda -- to launch green strategic partnership. Early on, PM Modi had made clear that India had the scale -- 1.3 billion people, Denmark had the skills. India also has skills. We need a scope. The green strategic partnership is a way of focussing on every kind of cooperation that will improve the situation vis-a-vis climate change, energy, and food processing. Programmes like clean tap water, doubling of farmers income -- we can play a role. Around 1.4 billion people are entering into a relationship with Danes. We are proud of that. As PM Modi said, greener partnership of the new age. It will create jobs in India, many Danish companies are ready to invest more in India to secure greener transformation. It is about shaping future -- we moving from green, greener and greenest kind of attitude. As PM said at the UN, we need to reform, perform and transform. On Monday, we are following that mantra. We are very happy about that.

Wion: One of the key outcomes of the virtual summit is Denmark joining the international solar alliance. How important is it for your country?

Freddy Svane: We have to take note of that whatever we try to do globally on climate change, nothing will be successful without India being part of it. India has to be part of it. In that context, ISA, which is one of the most important projects launched by the Modi government is very important for changing the energy mix and secure green mindset is coming to all of us. We are ready to join ISA; our prime minister gave a commitment on Monday. All preparatory works are being done. We see huge potential for India and the ambitious agenda outlined by the Indian government, we have the tech, money so that India can be a global hub for onshore, offshore and wind energy. We are connecting in the greenway and that is about the future.

Wion: Indian PM during the virtual summit called for diversification of global supply chain, and without taking China's name highlighted how risky it has been to be dependent on a "single source". He also cited India, Japan, Australia supply chain resilience initiative. Your reaction?

Freddy Svane: First and foremost, COVID-19 was discussed on Monday. Both PMs, agreed, we need to find a global solution to the pandemic, it will not be the last one. We all have learnt our lessons and need to be much more resilient in dealing with the crisis. Both called for strong multilateral cooperation in the field. They took note of that, the pandemic had a negative impact on the global economy. In that perspective, we realised that traditional global supply chains are put at risk. And therefore, we need to reduce the risk. And naturally, India comes in as an alternative and India has been vocal about that. We saw the Japan, India, Australia initiative. That is something we are ready to consider. It is not to be seen as kind as a reaction to specific countries; it is about securing the global economy and benefits from the global economy comes to us. Nobody can live without global economy. Happy to tell, both PM agreed, FTA between India EU need to be finalised as soon as possible. Instead of focussing on what went wrong, its important to focus on how we can change things and benefits the whole world, India and Denmark. That is how I see.

Wion: This is the fourth virtual summit and first standalone virtual summit of an Indian prime minister with any European country. A reflection of growing closeness?

Freddy Svane: The EAM in his book very cleverly and smartly talked about the India way -- India has to reach to a different continent and different countries. We are extremely happy New Delhi thought about Denmark; we have been working on it with mutual interest on both sides. In Denmark, we have 6 million people and we are punching well beyond that on green technology and in that context, there are mutual benefits. You are a big country; you need to build strategic ties with small counties. We have our own history, but we have a specific relationship with your prime minister which is important to us.

Wion: Kim Davy issue was also raised during the meet.

Freddy Svane: I recall it myself. I was the envoy from 2010-2015. The two prime ministers discussed it and we took note of strong interests on both sides to have this matter resolved. Now we are moving forward.

The fact that India decided to enter into a green strategic partnership with Denmark is also significant and symbolises that we are here to create a future.

Denmark backs India on diversification of global supply chains

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assured the United Nations that the largest democracy of the world would help other nations in the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

PM Modi, in his UNGA address, also did not mince words in making a strong pitch for a more prominent role for India in UN's decision-making process. He also stressed the role New Delhi has played and continues to play in the international arena.

"Over 150 countries were sent medical supplies by Indian pharmaceuticals during the coronavirus pandemic. India's vaccine production will help in bringing the world out of the pandemic. We are moving towards Phase 3 of clinical trials. We are increasing infrastructure and will help others increase it," PM Modi said, in his pre-recorded video statement to the landmark General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly.

"India is proud of the fact that it is one of the founding members of the United Nations. On this historic occasion, I have come to this global platform to share the sentiments of 1.3 billion people of India," Modi said, adding, "if we were to make an objective assesment of the performance of UN over the last 75 years, we see several stellar achievements. But at the same time, there are also several instances that point to the need for a serious introspection of the work of the United Nations."

"The whole world has been battling the coronavirus pandemic for over eight to nine months now. Where is the United Nations in this joint fight against the pandemic? Where is its effective response?"

Modi also emphasised that he expected a better guidance and better supervision of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

"India has always stressed on good for the whole world in the UN. India is looking at an extended role in the UN. India began International Day of non-violence and Yoga was given by India. India's vaccine-production capacity to help 'all humanity': PM Modi at UNGA

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a strong pitch for a prominent role for India, the world's largest democracy and home to 1.3 billion people, in the decision-making structures of the United Nations. He also asserted that reform in the responses, processes and in the very character of the global body is the "need of the hour."

In his pre-recorded video statement to the landmark General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Modi said the stability in the United Nations and empowerment of the world body are essential for the welfare of the world.

The prime minister's strong push for UN reforms and the much-delayed expansion of the powerful Security Council came as India will begin its two-year term as an elected non-permanent member of the 15-member Council from January 1 next year.

Modi also assured the United Nations that the largest democracy of the world would help the world in fighting the coronavirus crisis and in the development of a vaccine.

"For how long will India be kept out of the decision-making structures of the United Nations? How long would a country have to wait particularly when the transformational changes happening in that country affect a large part of the world?" Modi said.

He said that while it is a fact that the faith and respect that the United Nations enjoys among the 1.3 billion people in India is "unparalleled", it is also true that the people of India have been waiting for a long time for the process for the reforms of the United Nations to get completed.

"Today, people of India are concerned whether this reform-process will ever reach its logical conclusion," he said, adding that every Indian today, while seeing the contribution of India in the world organisation, aspires for India's expanded role in the United Nations.

"Reform in the responses, in the processes, and in the very character of the United Nations is the need of the hour," he emphasised.

India has been spearheading decades-long efforts to reform the Security Council, saying a structure set up in 1945 does not reflect contemporary realities of the 21st Century and is ill-equipped to handle current challenges.

There is widespread support, including by four out of the five permanent members of the Security Council - US, UK, France and Russia - for a permanent seat for India at the Council.

Modi said India is a country which is the largest democracy of the world, with more than 18 per cent of the world population, has hundreds of languages, dialects, many sects and ideologies, which was a leading global economy for centuries and also endured hundreds of years of foreign rule.

"When we were strong, we were never a threat to the world, when we were weak, we never became a burden on the world," he said.

Modi emphasised that the world of today is a completely different era from the world of 1945 when the global situation, sources-resources, problems-solutions were all quite different.

"With the changing times, if we don't change, then the drive needed to bring change will also get weakened," he said.

An objective assessment of the performance of the United Nations over the last 75 years would yield several stellar achievements but at the same time, there are also several instances that point to the need for a "serious introspection of the work of the United Nations," he said.

"Several terrorist attacks shook the world and rivers of blood have continued to flow by," he said.

"During those times and even today, can we suggest that efforts of the United Nations to tackle these issues were sufficient," he said.

Modi said India will not hesitate to raise its voice against the enemies of humanity, including terrorism, smuggling of illegal weapons, drugs and money-laundering, and will always speak in support of peace, security and prosperity.

"Starting from January next year, India will also fulfill its responsibility as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. I express my gratitude to all fellow member states who have bestowed this trust upon India," he said, referring to the overwhelming support the country received during the election in June.

"As the world's largest democracy, we will bring our years of rich experience for the benefit of the whole world," he added.

Modi underscored that the ideals on which the UN was founded and India's own fundamental philosophy has a lot of commonality and are not different from each other.
"Within the halls of the United Nations, one has often heard the words 'the world is one family'," he said, adding that it is part of India's culture, character and thinking to treat the whole world as one family.

"In the United Nations too, India has always given priority to the welfare of the whole world," he said, outlining that India has sent its brave soldiers to about 50 peacekeeping missions the world over to keep peace and in the course of maintaining peace, has lost the maximum number of its brave soldiers.

"India's experiences, and India's developmental journey marked with its ups and downs will only add to strengthening the path to global welfare," he said.

"In the changed circumstances of the post-pandemic era, we are moving forward with the vision of a 'Self-reliant India'," which will also be a force multiplier for the global economy, he said.

"In its journey towards progress, India wants to learn from the world as well as share its own experiences with the world," Modi added.

"Over 150 countries were sent medical supplies by Indian pharmaceuticals during the coronavirus pandemic. India's vaccine production will help in bringing the world out of the pandemic. We are moving towards Phase 3 of clinical trials. We are increasing infrastructure and will help others increase it," PM Modi said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a strong pitch for a prominent role for India, the world's largest democracy and home to 1.3 billion people, in the decision-making structures of the United Nations. He also asserted that reform in the responses, processes and in the very character of the global body is the "need of the hour." In his pre-recorded video statement to the landmark General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Modi said the stability in the United Nations and empowerment of the world body are essential for the welfare of the world. The newly appointed prime minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, batted for Quad grouping in his first conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Quad grouping consists of Japan, India, Australia and the United States.

The Japan government readout about the conversation said that it lasted for 25 minutes.

"Prime Minster Suga stated that he would like to promote cooperation in such multilateral mechanism as Japan-Australia-India-US meetings and the United Nations," it said.

The comments come as Tokyo is all set to host a meeting of Quad foreign ministers in October. This will be the second such meeting. The first happened last year on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Both leaders spoke at length on Indo-Pacific. The Indian readout of the meet said both leaders "emphasised that the economic architecture of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region" must be premised on "resilient supply chains, and in this context, welcomed cooperation between India, Japan and other like-minded countries."

During the conversation, the bullet train which Japan is helping to build was also discussed. Ties between the two countries have seen significant development in the last few years, especially under the leadership for former Japanese prime minister Abe Shinzo. He had developed a personal connection with Modi.

PM Modi is the sixth head of India the new Japan prime minister has spoken to. Since taking charge on September 16, 2020, Yoshihide Suga has spoken to US President Donald Trump, Australian PM Scott Morrison, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of the European Council Charles Michel and British PM Boris Johnson.

Skipper Virat Kohli explained how the Yo-Yo test helped Indian cricketers aim for high-level fitness when Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him about the mandatory running aerobic fitness routine.

Prime Minister Modi was interacting with fitness experts and influencers from across the country to mark the one-year anniversary of the 'Fit India Movement.'

Modi was keen to know what is Yo-Yo test and asked if the captain also has to pass it or he gets spared?

"I heard these days there is a Yo-Yo test for the team, what is this test," asked Modi during the virtual interaction.

Kohli, smiling, replied, "This Test was very important from fitness point of view. If we talk about global fitness level, our fitness level is still low compared to other teams and we want to take it up, which is a basic requirement."

The gruelling routine has two sets of cones that are 20 metres apart. Once the beep is sounded, the athlete has to reach the marker on the other side by the time the next beep sounds, turn and get back to where he started before the third beep.

The frequency of the beeps gradually increases for the subsequent runs.

Kohli, who is currently in the UAE for the ongoing 13th IPL, said even he has to clear the test to get selected for the India team.

"I'm the one who goes to run first and this is the condition that if I fail that I am also not available for selection. It is important to set that culture and it will lead to improvement in overall fitness levels."

The session was attended by sports persons such as Paralympic javelin gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia and woman footballer from Jammu and Kashmir Afshan Ashiq.

Also present were actor, model and runner Milind Soman and nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar.

Modi also interacted with Afshan, who hit the headlines in 2017 as a stone pelter in Srinagar.

The 25-year-old played as goalkeeper in J&K women's football team and later played in the Indian Women's League in 2019 for FC Kolhapur City. She also trains youngsters in Srinagar.

To encourage her Modi said, "You have done very well in football. Mostly, football fans say 'Bend it like Beckham', but now they will say 'Ace it like Afshan'."

Afshan said she gets inspiration from former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, eulogised as 'captain cool'.
"I do meditation at 5:30 every morning to keep my mind cool. I have learnt a lot from M S Dhoni, he is always calm. I like getting that calmness in my life, it helps to do all work calmly. It helps in balancing mental stress."

Kohli said better fitness has helped the players, especially fast bowlers, to perform during crucial moments.

"In Test cricket, sometimes we get tired. Our fast bowlers are best in the world currently and if they have to put that effort on the fourth and fifth day on the field, they can do it now," he said.

"We always had the skills but when in the crucial moment when the body gets tired and the team needs you, our performance used to dip and our opponents used to win, now because of our fitness, we have been able to capitalise and perform on those crucial moments," he added.

Kohli said he didn't follow the right diet early in his career and stressed on the need to bring an overall change in lifestyle.

"When I started playing, I started having lot of things which were not good from health point of view. So physical fitness and diet had to change. Now life is very hectic, so if we don't keep fitness in sync with our times, we will keep falling behind. If we wouldn't have focussed on our fitness then we would have fallen behind in our sports as well. We can't only depend on our skills as mental strength depends on how fit is the body and mind."

Modi said he was glad that healthy eating is becoming a part of people's way of living.

"Becoming fit is not as difficult as most think. It just requires a little discipline. 'Fitness ki dose, aadha ghanta roz'. Every Indian should play some game or do some fitness activity, be it tennis, badminton, kabaddi. It has to be for at least half an hour," the PM said.
