A 52-year-old pediatrician was stabbed to death in Conroe, Texas on Saturday (October 28), a tragedy that has shocked the community as the doctor was a much-loved member of the society. The motive behind this "completely unexpected" crime is not yet clear. The assailant, Miles Joseph Fridrich (24) has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Dr Talat Jehan Khan, a mother of two, was sitting with her dog outside her apartment when Fridrich stabbed her multiple times, said police according to reports in local media.

“This is an immeasurable loss for our family, completely unexpected,” said Khan's niece Mahnoor Mangrio as quoted by KHOU, a local television station.

"She’s a Muslim, strong in her faith, those are identifiable traits about her. She’s extremely loving, kind. She was my aunt … the best aunt.”

It was not immediately clear why did Fridrich kill her. He reportedly attacked her around 12:30 pm at the Alys Apartments and then fled on foot. Khan died on the spot. The killer was later arrested based on a description provided by witnesses of the crime.

KHOU quoted a suspect who said Fridrich “came out of nowhere”

“I was outside and I heard a woman out there, and I heard that she was screaming,” the witness told the station. “She was sitting at the picnic table.”

“She liked to see the sun and warm weather, so that was one of the main reasons why she moved here,” said Wajahat Nyaz, brother of Dr Khan told television channel KPRC as he described why she moved to Texas from Seattle.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Houston has released a statement about the crime and has said that it was “paying very close attention” to the investigation.&nbsp;

“We are unsure at this moment if this was a hate crime, however given the tragic circumstances, we are paying very close attention to the investigation,” said the statement.

“We will continue to monitor the situation while we launch our own investigation and continue established dialogue with law enforcement.”

Dr Khan has left behind a 14-year-old daughter and a 23-year-old son.

“Her kids and the&nbsp;kids she looked after as a pediatrician were her entire life,” Nyaz also said. “Everything in her life revolved around those two things.”

The family does not think that Dr Khan and Fridrich knew each other.

According to KPRC, Fridrich has previously faced drug and weapon charges, but they were later dismissed or disposed of.

The state education department also took action by serving a notice to Neha Public School. The Basic Shiksha Adhikari of Muzaffarnagar, Shubham Shukla, communicated the notice to the school management, demanding a response by August 28.

The notice raised concerns about the potential cancellation of the school's government recognition.

The incident snowballed into a political debate, with various parties sharing their opinions. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident and accused the ruling BJP government of promoting divisive politics.

"That cleric should have understood that when you gather people in such a charged environment... in a country in which people were already very sensitive about (blasphemy) it is like adding fuel to fire," Punjab police chief Usman Anwar told AFP during an interview in Lahore on Friday.

"He's not saying that go and burn their houses. But when the mob gathers, it's really impossible to control it."

Anwar said that the cleric was one of the 12 people who were being investigated for the use of mosque loudspeakers. More than 125 people have been arrested in connection with the vandalism that followed. Technology such as facial recognition, mobile phone geo-fencing has been used to apprehend the culprits. The data from social media was also used to track those responsible.

At the peak of the violence, more than 5000 people had gathered into the neighbourhood from other districts. Other smaller mobs spread to narrow alleys ransacking homes.

The Christian residents fled in hundreds. They have criticised police for failing to protect their property. Some of them were sheltered by their Muslim neighbours.

"If police had started baton charging, or attacking (the mob) or tear gassing that would have resulted in multiple injuries or deaths. And that is what we were avoiding at that time. That would have aggravated the situation that would have spread in all the country," Anwar said.

Negotiations with religious leaders led to calls for calm, he added.

Two Christian brothers were arrested for blasphemy after torn pages of the Holy Quran were stuck to the walls of a mosque. The pages had offensive words scrawled across them.

Anwar said he personally interrogated the pair to avoid the possibility of accusations of torture.

On Friday, 3,200 churches were guarded by police across Punjab province to provide reassurance to the Christian community, Anwar said, adding that he would travel to Jaranwala Sunday to show solidarity.

Pakistan: Muslim cleric among dozen probed over blasphemy riots

In the wake of the communal flare-up in Nuh district of&nbsp; Haryana, authorities in the north Indian state have asked Muslims to offer Friday namaz prayers at their homes to avoid any untoward incident on August 4.

In the Gurugram district, police issued an advisory asking Muslims to avoid going to open spaces or mosques to offer prayers.

Certain areas in the state are reeling under communal violence since clashes broke out in Nuh on Monday (July 31). Since then, the violence has spilled over into adjoining areas. So far, six people, including two police staff, have lost their lives.

Haryana administration also removed the Superintendent of Police from Nuh, Varun Singla, and transferred him to the Bhiwani district. He was replaced by IPS Narendra Bijarniya, as reported by ANI.

<h2>Section 144 still in place</h2>

CrPC Section 144, which prohibits assembly of four or more people, was still in place in some areas, The Hindu newspaper reported citing a senior police official from Gurugram.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Gurugram) Siddhant Jain said, “We are constantly combing through social media for any inflammatory messages and have also asked people to avoid sharing any such content if they come across anything.”

Earlier on Thursday, a meeting was held between senior police officials from the Nuh district and leaders of the Muslim community.&nbsp;

Nuh Deputy Commissioner Prashant Panwar and Superintendent of Police Varun Singla sought cooperation from them to encourage their community members to not step out of their homes on Friday.

“Prayers will not take place inside mosques or at open spaces. Only those who stay at mosques will be allowed to offer prayers there,” the organisation said in a statement.

Some areas in adjoining states of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi were put on high alert on Friday. Although there are no restrictions on offering namaz in mosques in these states, police deployment has been beefed up to maintain law and order.

“We always have police presence near mosques and in sensitive areas on Fridays. We will strengthen our arrangements around 273 mosques in the district to ensure that no incident during or after the prayers takes place, and that everybody reaches home safely,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Joy Tirkey was quoted as saying by the Hindu.

A Muslim preacher in Indonesia was arrested on blasphemy and hate speech charges post his controversial Islamic boarding school incited protests after women were given permission to preach and pray beside men, the police released a statement saying on Wednesday.

The Al-Zaytun boarding school, located in West Java, which is the Muslim-majority nation's most populous province, has faced severe backlash from conservative groups that have condemned it for practising a version of Islam which is very different from the teachings of the Quran and incompatible with the holy book.

Indonesia's Islamic Clerical Council said some of Al-Zaytun's practices were a "wrong interpretation of the Quran". Earlier, in the month of June, it said it was probing the school for "misguided religious practices".

The head of the school, Panji Gumilang, aged 77, was detained early on Wednesday after being interrogated, national police spokesman Ahmad Ramadhan told reporters.

"Investigators took legal action... and he is detained in the criminal investigation agency's detention facility for 20 days," he said.

As per the charges, Gumilang faces five-year imprisonment for blasphemy, six for spreading hate speech and 10 on the charge of spreading fake news and deliberately causing chaos in public.

The school scintillated unrest in conservative circles and demonstrations outside its compound when social media footage in late April showed women praying in the same row as men.

Generally, women are expected to pray behind men in traditional Islamic prayer.

Another practice of the school that ignited controversy was allowing the women to give a sermon in Friday prayers. This task is typically reserved for men in traditional Islamic teaching.

Previously, thousands of demonstrators have gathered outside the school several times since the month of June to call for its closure.

Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch said the Al-Zaytun case was the latest example of discrimination against minority views.

"If a Muslim cleric is accused of committing blasphemy against Islam for promoting women's rights, something must be terribly wrong with both Indonesia's blasphemy law and the mainstream (clerical) groups," he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

UN: Muslim countries demand action over Quran burning in Sweden

A story of communal harmony is emerging from the southern Indian state of Kerala. The youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) organised the wedding of a Hindu couple at a temple in Malappuram district in Kerala. The Muslim Youth League, the youth wing of IUML, in the 12th ward of Vengara panchayat, carried out the ceremony on the morning of July 9. The Ammancheri Bhagavati Temple was witness to the wedding of Geethu and Vishnu.

Geetu is a native of Palakkad and was a resident of Rose Manor Short Stay Home for women and girls in Vengara. The short-stay home rehabilitates women in distress who have found themselves to be victims of exploitation, marital discord, trafficking, and familial disharmony.

Hassena Fasal, president of Vengara Panchayat told news outlet The News Minute (TNM), that the short-stay home had stopped receiving grants from the government a year ago.

“Geethu, her sister Girija, and their mother were the last residents of Rose Manor. Girija was also married off with help from the Youth League almost a year back. The home’s superintendent arranged the alliances, while the Youth League helped financially,” Haseena said as quoted by TNM.

Geethu's sister Girija herself got married in the month of September last year. Rakesh, the groom is a native of Edayoor in Malappuram. The Youth League committee supported this union as well by taking care of financial and other requirements.

Geethu's groom Vishnu hails from Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode

People from different political parties and religions attended the wedding. These included leaders from the IUML, the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist). Several local residents and well-wishers were present as well. Sadiq Ali Thangal and PK Kunhalikutty, prominent IUML leaders were also present for the ceremony.

“The Muslim League workers of Vengara planned, decided, and conducted the wedding of Geeta, who came to Rose Manor with her mother and sister years ago. The pandal was erected in the courtyard of Sri Ammancheri Kavu Bhagavathy Temple. The temple committee stood by everything. It became a beautiful expression of harmony and goodness when the region and its people came together with love and support regardless of party politics,” said PK Kunhalikutty as quoted by The News Minute.

“This is a feature of Malappuram. There have been attempts to paint the district in a poor light. Those who have seen and understood Malappuram know that such campaigns are false,” said IUML general secretary PMA Salam as quoted by Reporter TV.

The Minneapolis City Council overwhelmingly decided on&nbsp;Thursday to change the city's noise ordinance, which had barred morning and late-evening calls at specific times of the year owing to noise limits, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “The Constitution doesn’t sleep at night,” said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, after the vote. He said the action in Minneapolis shows the world that a “nation founded on freedom of religion makes good on its promise.”

And it’s a shame that he’s surrounded by some people that run to a publication that is notorious for attacking him in order to try to cut me at the knees instead of being loyal to president Trump and respecting their confidentiality agreements.”

As part of his 2016 campaign, Trump gave fuel to anti-Muslim prejudice. As president, he restricted travel from numerous countries with large Muslim population. He previously backed Loomer's bid for Florida's congressional seat in 2020.&nbsp;

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud along with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian have decided to hold talks during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan, which is important for Muslims, stated the Saudi state news agency SPA on Monday, under an agreement to restore ties.

Iranian, Saudi foreign ministers to hold talks during Muslim holy month

A Muslim man was convicted and sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in northwest Pakistan after he faced an accusation of sharing a blasphemous post in a WhatsApp group.

In Pakistan, where the majority population is Muslim, blasphemy remains a hugely sensitive issue as even allegations which are unproven can stir mobs and lead to violence.

The court convicted Syed Muhammad Zeeshan under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and Anti-Terrorist Act in Peshawar on Friday.

“Accused Syed Muhammad Zeeshan, son of Syed Zakaullah in custody has been convicted and sentenced after being found guilty,” read the court order, according to the AFP.

Zeeshan, who lives in the country's northwest city of Mardan, was also slapped with a fine of Rs1.2 million ($4,300) and given 23 years of rigorous imprisonment. The man has the right to appeal against the court order.

Two years ago, an application was filed by Muhammad Saeed, who resides in Talagang, Punjab province, with the Federal Investigation Agency in which he accused Zeeshan of sharing blasphemous posts in a WhatsApp group, said Saeed’s counsel Ibrar Hussain while speaking to the AFP.

The “FIA had confiscated Zeeshan’s cellphone and its forensic examination proved him guilty”, he added. Although the laws of Pakistan prohibiting blasphemy may carry a potential death sentence, it has never been enforced so far for the crime.

In total, the sentence brings Oktar's punishment to 8,658 years. The court also gave similar years in prison to 10 other suspects, AFP reported.&nbsp;

The first verdict against Oktar and his mates was filed in January 2021 but was&nbsp;overruled by an upper court citing legal proof&nbsp;and ordering a retrial.&nbsp;This&nbsp;indictment against Oktar and his mates was presented in the court in September, accusing him of also running an armed organisation and exploiting the religious sentiments of many.

Islamic televangelist and sex cult leader sentenced to 8,658 years in prison by Turkish court

Karachi court made a decision in favour of a man who had abducted Chanda, a Hindu girl despite the victim's family saying that the girl was a minor,&nbsp;to no avail.

A Hindu minor Chanda Maharaj (15), who was abducted on October 13 from Sindh's Hyderabad city, by a person named Shaman Magsi Baloch, was recovered by Karachi Police from a rented accommodation in the city.

She was presented in Karachi court where she recounted her horror saying that after being kidnapped, she was taken to Karachi and forcibly converted to Islam after which she was repeatedly assaulted sexually and physically for a week before the police recovered her.

While Chanda Maharaj has been sent to Karachi Shelter Home for Girls and her family informed, no action has so far been initiated against the accused, Shaman Magsi Baloch.

The court didn't allow Chanda to go with parents. After the decision, she ran to her parents and hugged them. She was in tears.

Meanwhile, the court slightly changed its decision after a video surfaced on social media in which a girl was in tears. The court ordered Chanda to go to a safe house and sought&nbsp;a medical report, reported Veengas.

Chanda Maharaj's mother said that she doesn't trust the system. "I still hope the government and the court do justice," she said.&nbsp;

In a separate incident, Jamsi Meghwar, daughter of Devo Meghwar,&nbsp;was abducted by Mustafa Dhokar and Shaukat Ali area of Tandu Ghulam Ali in Sindh's Tharparkar district on October 20.

Jamsi's father alleged that he was pushed and shoved by the duo before his daughter was kidnapped.

According to reports, Jamsi has been married off to Shaukat, son of Murad Hanhrjo after being converted to Islam by Samaru Pir Jan Srihandi. Her father claimed that the Tharparkar police had refused to lodge his complaint.

Cases of Hindu girls being kidnapped and converted to Islam after being married to their abductors are on the rise with reports of four such cases coming from Pakistan's Sindh province on October 19 and 20.

As per information, two sisters, aged 17 and 18 years, from the Hindu Ood community were kidnapped from the Salhepat tehsil area of Sindh's Sakkar district on October 19.

Their mother claims that they were abducted by three Muslims, known to them, when they were returning home from the market with groceries.

She further claimed that the police had not only refused to register the FIR but had also refused to entertain the complaint itself.

A report by a UK think tank has claimed that a new law enforced by the parliament, which has the power to revoke the citizenship of British people without prior notice, has reduced British Muslims to "second class" citizens.

In a report titled "Citizenship: from right to privilege" and published on Sunday, the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) sought to blame the UK government for racial prejudice, saying that the bill almost exclusively targets Muslims, especially those of South Asian heritage.

The report specifically talks about the new law, called Clause 9, that was added to the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 in April.

The clause states that a British citizen who is abroad is deprived of citizenship until "they try to come home and are refused boarding or they need help from the British Embassy because their passport, money, etc., have been lost or stolen," the report said.

The IRR’s report cited the case of Shamima Begum, who lost her citizenship after she was smuggled into the hands of the Islamic State at the age of 15.

"Changes to citizenship law which have created these classes of citizenship were brought in to target British Muslims of South Asian and Middle Eastern heritage. Such divisions act as a constant reminder to minority ethnic citizens that they must watch their step, and reinforce racist messages about 'undeserving' groups unworthy of being British," IRR vice-chair Frances Webber said in the report.

Earlier, UK nationals were notified by letter when their citizenship was revoked.

Those who have lost their citizenship do have the right to challenge the decision through an appeals process. However, critics believe that removing the need to notify prevents them from exercising that right.

Reacting to the report, the Home Office spokesperson defended their decision, saying that the law would affect only a handful of people.

"Our priority is to ensure the safety and security of the UK. Deprivation of citizenship only happens after careful consideration of the facts and in accordance with international law. "It is used against those who have acquired citizenship by fraud and against the most dangerous people, such as terrorists, extremists, and serious organised criminals," the spokesperson told the Guardian.

"We make no apology for doing whatever is necessary to protect the UK from those who pose a threat to our security," the spokesperson added.

A Muslim girl who has attained puberty can marry without the consent of her parents under the Mohammedan Law, the Delhi High Court said. The girl can also reside with her husband even if she is underage, the court added.&nbsp;

The observation was made by Justice Jasmeet Singh during a recent hearing of a plea filed by a couple, a minor girl and a man. They were seeking protection and also wanted to ensure that nobody separates them by force.&nbsp;

India-based news agency IANS reported that the couple got married on March 11, which was against the wishes of the girl's parents.&nbsp;

At the time of the marriage, the man was 25 years old and as per her family and police, the girl was 15 years old in March. However, as per the Aadhaar card that was produced before the court by her counsel, she is over 19 years old.&nbsp;

In an order dated August 17, Justice Singh said, "It is thus clear that as per Mohammedan Law, the girl who had attained the age of puberty could marry without consent of her parents and had the right to reside with her husband even when she was less than 18 years of age and thus otherwise (is a) minor girl."&nbsp;

The full copy of the order was released on Monday evening.&nbsp;

The text stated that every Mohamedan of sound mind, who has attained puberty, may enter into a contract of marriage.&nbsp;

The petitioners have noted that they were in love with each other and married on March 11, 2022. The ceremony was conducted in accordance with Muslim rites and rituals by Maulana Imtiyaz of Jokihat Masjid, District Aauriya, Bihar.&nbsp;

But the parents of the girl were opposing the marriage and they have reportedly registered a case under Section 363 IPC (Punishment for kidnapping) against the man.&nbsp;

Section 376 IPC (Punishment for sexual assault) and Section 6 POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act have been added later. Though initially, the FIR was under Section 363 IPC.&nbsp;

The plea said that the girl was regularly beaten by her parents at home and the parent even tried to forcibly marry her off to someone else despite her love affair.&nbsp;

The couple is also expecting a child together, the petitioner's counsel stated that the woman is pregnant.&nbsp;

The court allowed them to stay together and also directed the authorities to ensure their personal safety and protection.&nbsp;

It said, "Hence, the petitioners being lawfully wedded to each other cannot be denied the company of each other which is the essence of the marriage. If the petitioners are separated, it will only cause more trauma to the petitioner no.1 and her unborn child."&nbsp;

"The aim of the state here is to protect the best interest of Petitioner no.1. If the petitioner has wilfully consented to the marriage and is happy, the state is no one to enter private space of the petitioner and separate the couple. The doing of the same will tantamount to encroachment of personal space by the state," it added.&nbsp;

The killings of four Muslim men in the past few months have shaken Albuquerque with the Muslim population now on edge. The police is investigating whether the killings of these men of South Asian descent are linked, the most recent of which was reported on Friday.

"We have a very, very strong lead. We have a vehicle of interest...we have got to find this vehicle," Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller was quoted as saying by CNN. "We don't know at this point what it is associated with, or who owns it."

The victims are - Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, Aftab Hussein, 41, and Naeem Hussain, 25. The last three murders were reported within the last two weeks, while another killing from November last year has now been thrown open.

The Albuquerque police officers responded to reports of a shooting on Friday just before midnight in the Truman Street and Grand Avenue area, which is where they found Naeem Hussain dead.

The other three were all ambush-style killings. Muhammad Afzaal Hussain and Aftab Hussein were from Pakistan and found dead in Southeast Albuquerque. While Muhammad Afzaal was shot dead on August 1, Aftab Hussein, who was found with gunshot wounds on July 26, succumbed to his injuries.

Mohammad Ahmadi was from Afghanistan and was shot outside his business on November 7, 2021.&nbsp;

According to PTI, the quiz competition organised by major publishing house DC Books as part of the ongoing ‘Ramayana Month’ celebrations was won by Basith and his college mate-friend Mohammed Jabir P K. Both of them are currently students of KKSM Islamic and Arts College at Valanchery.

“All Indians must read and learn the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata as they are part of the country’s culture, tradition and history. I believe that it is our responsibility to learn and understand these texts,” Jabir told PTI in an interview after the win.

“Rama had to sacrifice even his kingdom to fulfil the promise to his beloved father Dasaratha. While living in a period of endless struggles for power, we should draw inspiration from characters like Rama and the message of epics like Ramayana,” the 22-year-old student added.

Prohibitory orders were previously issued in Udipi, Shivamogga, and Kalburagi, among other districts in the state, under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Hijab controversy began in January of this year, when six students wearing the hijab were allegedly banned from entering the Government PU College in Udupi.

Following this, the females sat outside the college in protest of being denied admission.&nbsp;

Following this, the boys of numerous Udupi colleges began wearing saffron scarves to class.

This demonstration expanded to other sections of the state, resulting in a slew of protests and agitations across the state.

As a result, the Karnataka government declared that all students must wear the uniform and that both the hijab and saffron scarf are prohibited until an expert committee rules on the matter.

The pre-university education board issued a circular on February 5 indicating that students may only wear the school uniform approved by the administration and that no other religious garb will be permitted in colleges.&nbsp;

The decree noted that if management committees do not mandate a uniform, students should dress in a manner that promotes equality and unity while not disrupting the social order.&nbsp;
