An overdose of the non-opioid xylazine prevents a person from being able to react to naloxone, often known as Narcan, the most widely used overdose reversal medication, making it unsafe for humans.

The ban was implemented as the health officials of the Southeast Asian nation looked into an unexplained increase since January in the number of paediatric deaths from acute renal damage.&nbsp;

It also follows a controversy involving four cough syrups made in India that resulted in the deaths of nearly 70 kids in The Gambia earlier this year from AKI.

The syrups brought into The Gambia, according to the Indonesian food and drug regulator, are unavailable in the Southeast Asian nation.

"As a precaution, the ministry has asked all health workers in health facilities not to prescribe liquid medicine or syrup temporarily... we also asked drug stores to temporarily stop non-prescription liquid medicine or syrup sales until the investigation is completed," he added.&nbsp;

The increase in AKI cases started in January of this year and has picked up speed since late August, according to the ministry spokesperson, who also noted that an investigation was started last week.

"Since late August 2022, the ministry and the paediatrician association have received increasing reports of acute kidney injury. The jump is sharp," the spokesperson said.

“This is just the beginning,” Xuanhe Zhao, a mechanical engineer at MIT who led the research team, was quoted as saying.

He said that his team plans to make the patch wireless and able to interface with a user’s phone, which could then show the ultrasound signals as 3-D images.

“We are working hard on the wireless version because there are already wireless point-of-care handheld ultrasounds. We are confident that we will be able to achieve the wireless version in a few years,” he told The Guardian.

They are also confident of their device's efficacy over the prevailing portable ones. In laboratory tests, they used the patches to see people’s hearts change shape during exercise, their stomachs expand and shrink as they drank and passed drinks, and their muscles pick up microdamage when weightlifting.

The researchers say that even without a wireless version, these miniature patches could make an immediate difference in hospitals by monitoring patients’ organs while they lie in bed.

The results of the study, published in the journal Clinical and Translational Medicine, state that the mice showed almost 80-85 per cent improvement after the drug was administered. The results were also found to be quite similar whether the drug is given 24 hours or six weeks after the injury.

The report explained the drug blocks the action of enzymes - MMP-9 and MMP-12 – which cause swelling after suffering a spinal cord injury and lowers the inflammation and pain in the area.

He added that there is a shortage of most of the anaesthetic drugs used in the surgery. "Hypertension and life-saving medicines are also short. The pharmacists don`t have drugs. And antibiotics drugs are missing. In the coming days, we will face a big problem, we are not protesting for salary, we are protesting for life," he said.

Another doctor Hiran Karasingha told ANI that unfortunately, the situation is getting worse in the country. "The poor people are coming to the government hospitals, however, no medical supplies are available," he said.

Supporting the claims of the doctors, Shalintha Rodrigoa, a pharmacist working in the biggest pharma store in Colombo known as "Union Pharmacy" told the ANI team that many of the drugs come from India, however, there is a shortage of these drugs imported from India as well.

He further said that they have increased the prices of the medicines by 29 per cent as said by the government, however, many life-saving drugs including cancer medicines are also missing from the stores.

Rodrigoa added that there is a dearth of even common drugs like paracetamol and panadol in the medical stores.

A routine work to document phytochemicals (chemical compounds produced by plants that help them fight fungi, virus and prevent consumption by animals) in Himalayan plants has led the Indian researchers to an interesting find.

According to researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi, the petals of the commonly available plant ‘Himalayan Buransh’ (rhododendron arboreum) have properties to inhibit the replication of COVID-19.

This was proven in an experiment that was performed on COVID-19 infected vero E6 cells (cells from the kidney of an African monkey that are commonly used to study the infectivity of bacteria and virus).

WION spoke to the researchers of this study to understand its ramifications that potentially emerge as a cure or medicine against the Coronavirus.&nbsp;

According to Dr Shyam Kumar Masakapalli, associate professor, BioX Centre, School of Basic Science, IIT Mandi, their team has been carrying out work to understand the Himalayan flora, including rare, endangered, aromatic and medicinal plants since 2019.

Their end goal was to establish a Himalayan Phytochemical Library that would help understand the plant-derived compounds to help fight specific diseases.

With the pandemic having struck in 2020, they expedited their work to find plant-derived medicinal properties against COVID-19 infection.&nbsp;

It is said to be the first time that the properties of Himalayan Buransh petals are being studied, even though the petals have been a local delicacy for ages.

While the leaves are toxic for consumption, the petals are as condiments. It is also sold as squash that is meant to be a coolant during summers. It was by extracting phytochemicals from these petals that computational and biochemical analyses were conducted.&nbsp;

As per researchers, hot water extracts from the petals were found to be rich in quinic acid and its derivatives.

“Molecular dynamics studies showed that these phytochemicals have two kinds of effects against the virus. They bound to the main protease – an enzyme that plays an important role in viral replication - and to the Human Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE2) that mediates viral entry into the host cells”.&nbsp;

Explaining how the test was conducted, Dr Shyam Kumar said the cells derived from the monkey liver were first allowed to be attacked by the COVID-19 virus, following which some cells died and the virus multiplied.

But upon adding the plant-derived compound (in different quantities), the viral load came down and virus impact was inhibited by up to 80 percent.&nbsp;

Dr Sujatha Sunil, Vector Borne Disease Group, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi, said, “A combination of the phytochemical profiling, computer simulations and in vitro anti-viral assays showed that the extracts from the Buransh petals inhibited the replication of the COVID-19 virus in a dose-dependent manner.”

However, there remains up to a year of work before it can be clearly proven if a cure (in tablet or spray form) against COVID-19 can be derived from this compound. This process includes further studies, experiments and clinical trials.

But this farm has nothing to do with drug trafficking. It belongs, in fact, to a pioneering Brazilian NGO engaged in the production of medical cannabis to help patients with seizures.

Margarete Brito, a lawyer by training, first started growing cannabis several years ago to relieve the seizures of her daughter Sofia, now 12, who is suffering from epilepsy.

After seeing her condition improve, Brito decided to help other patients too. So she founded the Medical Cannabis Research and Patient Support Association, or Apepi, that produces artisanal therapeutic oils made from cannabis to help patients with conditions similar to her daughter's.

That work has required a lot of effort, since growing marijuana remains illegal in Brazil.

"If we follow the letter of the law, nothing authorizes us to do that," Brito told AFP.

But she and her husband, Marcos Langenbach, were able to obtain an unprecedented judicial authorization to cultivate cannabis for medical purposes in 2016.

Today, their farm -- about two hours by car from the Brazilian capital -- has 2,000 plants growing there to help patients with severe autism, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

And despite initial suspicion and pushback from some, Brito says the endeavour enjoys support in Brazil.

"We have real social legitimacy. That's what protects us," Brito said.

On a recent visit to the farm, which is protected by an electric fence and barbed wire, agricultural engineer Diogo Fonseca made his way among marijuana plants growing in large black pots and marked with the names of their different varieties: Purple Wreck, Schanti, Doctor, Harle Tsu, Solar, CBG.

"A lot of people have prejudices," Brito said. "We explain how our project works to everyone, but this person believed that we were drug traffickers and informed against us," said Manoel Caetano, the farm's manager.

The police eventually realized the farm was a medical cannabis plantation, apologized and left, according to Brito.

Apepi has forged partnerships with respected scientific institutions, such as the Fiocruz Foundation and the University of Campinas. And it has grown has fivefold over the past two years and now counts 1,500 members.

Among them is Gabriel Guerra, 19, who suffers from a severe form of autism and cerebral palsy. When he was eight, he would have 60 seizures a day. "But when he started to take the custom oil" -- a few drops three times a day -- "the attacks stopped. He started to have more independence, looking for ways to communicate," explained his father Ricardo Guerra.

Thanks to Apepi, the products have become much more accessible to patients: 150 reais ($28) for a 30 ml bottle, while imported products can cost anywhere from 600 to 3,000 reais ($113 to $565).

Apepi is now awaiting a court decision which they hope would allow the farm to increase its production to 10,000 plants starting next year.

But the group is not very optimistic about the prospect of legalization of medical cannabis any time soon -- President Jair Bolsonaro has already indicated that he would veto a bill being debated in Congress.

Venezuela's main academy of medicine has asked the United States to add the South American nation to its international donor list for millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccines, despite a political freeze between the two countries.

Enrique Lopez-Loyo, president of the politically independent National Academy of Medicine, made the request to U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela James Story at a meeting on May 2, the academy said in a statement on Monday.

China to introduce bill criminalising criticism of traditional medicine

Budget airline SpiceJet Ltd said on Friday it received permission to conduct drone trials that will allow it to deliver medical supplies and e-commerce products as a months-long lockdown has thrown supply chains in the country into disarray.

"Testing of drone technology for last mile connectivity and cost-effective cargo deliveries are a big leap in the air transportation of essential and non-essential supplies in India," SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said in a statement.

A SpiceXpress-led consortium, which includes drone maker Throttle Aerospace, was granted permission to operate drones beyond the visual sight of the operator on a trial basis, the airlines operator said in an email. 
It did not specify when it will begin the trials.

Medical travellers can save up to 50 per cent as the average daily cost of travel within India is 31 dollars (about Rs 2,232) compared to the United States having 223 dollars (about Rs 16,056). 
 
Besides, the quality of medical service is one of the hallmarks of India's position in global MVT. Currently, there are 38 hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and 619 accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). 
 
Even being affordable, the mortality rate after 30 days of surgery is less in India (1.4 per cent) compared to the United States (1.9 per cent) which shows the quality of post-operative care provided by the Indian health service providers. 
 
However, there is a need to improve on post-operative care in terms of environment, hygiene and precautions required after a patient is being operated, said the report. 
 
Besides, India is performing low when it comes to regulations. As of today, there are no regulations applicable to the industry pertaining to facilitators, hospitals, insurance, legal or medical issues, and promotion activities carried out by stakeholders. 
 
"With a lack of regulations, MVT in India might not be able to thrive at a steady pace. Hence, the formulation of regulations is important to make this industry sustainable," said the report. 
 
Significantly, there are no government-to-government institutional arrangements between India and patient source countries. The institutional tie-ups are maintained by hospitals and facilitators without government interference. 
 
In addition, there is no grievances or redressal mechanism in place for international patients to raise any complaints. There is no policy arrangement in place to insure patients in case of unexpected complications in treatment. 
 
Gaurav Taneja, National Director and Leader for Government and Public Sector practice at EY India, said the government must form institutions for regulation and implementation of MVT. There is a need to build a robust platform for patients to interact with different stakeholders of the industry and define a code of conduct for MVT business. 
 
"With a branding and marketing campaign 'Heal in India,' I am sure the country will elevate its existing position to rank among the most preferred MVT destinations," he said in the report.

"My wife and I have been unemployed for over two years. We need about 150 euros for medicine every month," says Assimakopoulos, a former baker.

Established at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/greece-debt-crisis-7-years-old-and-not-over-12609">height of the crisis in 2011</a>, the pharmacy runs on donated medicine and disposables. Some 40,000 people have brought medicine, many from abroad, says on-duty pharmacist Dimitis Palakas.

Another patient waiting in line is Achilleas Papadopoulos, a retired tenor. His pension of 700 euros is not enough to cover the antibiotics he has come for.

During nearly a decade of cuts imposed as Greece struggled to avert <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/greece-set-to-exit-bailout-still-faces-daunting-challenges-159825">national bankruptcy</a>, public education and health were among the sectors hit the hardest as the country lost a quarter of its national output.

Amid sweeping layoffs, wage cuts and tax hikes, many could not maintain their social insurance contributions and were pushed out of state-provided health support.

"Only 11 per cent of Greeks can currently afford private insurance giving full health coverage," says Grigoris Sarafianos, head of the association of private Greek health clinics.

According to the national statistics service, Greeks paid 34.3 per cent of their medical expenses out of their own pocket in 2016.

The crisis exposed "huge state shortages", says Petros Boteas, a member of the Hellinikon health team, which serves over 500 patients every month.

"There are fewer doctors and hospital staff. Money for medicine has been cut. There is a long waiting list for doctor's appointments... we had a cancer patient given an appointment in three months," he told AFP.

To avoid a long wait -- especially in an emergency -- many are forced to seek private healthcare, regardless of the cost. There are currently over 120 private clinics in the country.&nbsp;

'Go to a better school'&nbsp;

A similar scenario casts its shadow over education.&nbsp;

When Aspasia Apostolou's son was 11 years old and finishing Greek public primary school, his class teacher did something unexpected.

"He told us our son is bright and that he should be in a better school," says Apostolou, a 44-year-old lawyer.

According to the government, public funding for education fell by about 36 per cent during the crisis.

Thousands of trained staff including teachers and doctors emigrated -- part of an exodus of some 350,000 people -- or opted to retire.&nbsp;

A recent study by the London School of Economics found 75 per cent of Greek crisis emigrants holds university degrees.

The OECD in a 2017 study -- prepared at Greece's request -- said austerity cuts had "a major impact on the demands on the Greek education system, and on those working within it."

It said that in 2015, there were approximately 25,000 posts vacant for teachers in primary and secondary education schools.

Apostolou now pays 5,800 euros ($6,500) a year in tuition fees at a private school where her son can be assured of a well-structured curriculum.

"At our old school, the children usually come home early. So many school hours are lost because of teacher shortages during the year," she says.

"There is no evaluation, no reward for effort in a public school. You wallow in mediocrity."

Between 2011 and 2014, the state cut education wages and expenses by 24 per cent, the OECD study said.

While school books are provided by the state free of charge, the cuts continue to affect other essential resources including computers and petrol for heating.

It is not uncommon for schools to be shut down for lack of heating. The last instance was in February at the Athens school complex where Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras himself was a pupil.

In public schools, much now relies on private initiative and personal goodwill, what Greeks call 'filotimo', says Athanassia, a veteran public school teacher.

"I've worked in schools where the principal or teachers or parents paid out of their own pocket for essentials... or discreetly brought food to needy families," says Athanassia. She has worked in 20 public schools as teachers are shared out to plug staffing gaps.

"Whatever works is based on filotimo," she adds. "If funding were better, it would be totally different."

According to the Greek statistics agency, around 12 per cent of the country is near the poverty level.&nbsp;

In response, Tsipras's government in 2016 began a programme giving out free school meals at hundreds of schools in poorer regions.

Similarly, the government allowed access to public hospitals to long-term jobless Greeks without health insurance.

US President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled his plans to lower drug prices in the US with hopes to force other countries to increase their drug prices to bring down costs at home.

The plan will focus on "increasing competition and reducing regulatory burdens so drugs can be gotten to the market quicker and cheaper," Trump said at a White House ceremony with Health Secretary Alex Azar.

"We're very much eliminating the middlemen (who) became very, very rich."

Trump's program essentially aims to lower the price of drugs for seniors and retirees covered by the Medicare social insurance program.

"It`s time to end the global freeloading once and for all. I have directed US Trade Representative Bob Lighthizer to make fixing this injustice a top priority with every trading partner," Trump said during a speech at the White House Rose Garden, Efe reported.

"We have great power over the trading partners you`re seeing that already. America will not be cheated any longer, and especially will not be cheated by foreign countries," the President added.

Trump said that foreign countries had been taking advantage of the US pharmaceutical industry and the money put in in research and development, adding that brining costs down at home would lead to higher costs abroad. Trump has accused foreign countries of being partly responsible for the astronomical US prices.

"Their medicine is a tiny fraction of what the medicine costs in the USA," Trump said, without naming countries. "It's unfair and it's ridiculous, and it's not going to happen any longer."

The US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the Trump administration will use "every tool available" to ensure other nations use fair pricing practices.

"Our trading partners need to contribute their fair share toward pharmaceutical research and development by providing robust levels of intellectual property protection and enforcement, as well as having fair and transparent drug pricing systems," Lighthizer said.

Senate Democrat Claire McCaskill welcomed Trump's crackdown on the pharmaceutical industry, but she wondered "why the president backed off the idea of Medicare negotiating drug prices directly, which could bring significant savings for millions of people."

Nestle, the world&#39;s biggest food company, is stepping up its push into medicine with a global deal worth up to 100 million euros ($111 million) to develop and market an experimental milk allergy test for infants.

The Swiss group will pay DBV Technologies 10 million euros upfront for rights to its skin patch test for cow&rsquo;s milk protein allergy (CMPA), with the balance depending on successful development, the two companies said on Tuesday.

Shares in the French biotech company rose 5 percent on the news.

The deal underscores Nestle&#39;s ambitions for its&nbsp;Health&nbsp;Science division, which it believes could eventually generate more than 10 billion Swiss francs ($10 billion) in annual sales.

It also complements the company&#39;s market-leading infant formula business and could help lift sales of products designed for babies with food intolerance.

Nestle has signed a series of similar deals with other small companies in its bid to create a new kind business that is midway between food and pharmaceuticals. The goal is to find new ways to treat, diagnose and prevent a range of diseases, from gastrointestinal problems to Alzheimer&#39;s.

CMPA affects up to 2 or 3 percent of infants and toddlers, according to the companies. Many others, however, have symptoms suggestive of the condition, creating a need for a simple diagnostic test.

Under the terms of the agreement, DBV will be eligible to receive up to 90 million euros in development, regulatory and commercial milestones - on top of the upfront payment - and will also collect royalties on eventual product sales.

&ldquo;This innovation can become the breakthrough diagnostic for CMPA,&quot; said Greg Behar, chief executive of Nestl?&nbsp;Health&nbsp;Science.

The new test will need to go through extensive clinical trials before it is cleared for sale and DBV expects it to be submitted for approval to regulators worldwide by 2021.

Behar&#39;s division, which employs around 3,000 people, is an expanding part of Nestle&#39;s operations.

Given ageing populations around the world and spiralling cases of lifestyle diseases, the Swiss group sees big opportunities in&nbsp;health&nbsp;- but the initiative also poses new challenges by taking it into the highly regulated medical field.

Strategically the shift towards&nbsp;health&nbsp;offers Nestle a hedge against slowing growth in packaged foods and may also offset crackdowns on unhealthy foods blamed for obesity and other lifestyle problems.

Nestle, the world's biggest food company, is stepping up its push into medicine with a global deal worth up to 100 million euros ($111 million) to develop and market an experimental milk allergy test for infants. The Swiss group will pay DBV Technologies 10 million euros upfront for rights to its skin patch test for cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA), with the balance depending on successful development, the two companies said on Tuesday. Shares in the French biotech company rose 5 percent on the news. The deal underscores Nestle's ambitions for its Health Science division, which it believes could eventually generate more than 10 billion Swiss francs ($10 billion) in annual sales. It also complements the company's market-leading infant formula business and could help lift sales of products designed for babies with food intolerance. Nestle has signed a series of similar deals with other small companies in its bid to create a new kind business that is midway between food and pharmaceuticals. The goal is to find new ways to treat, diagnose and prevent a range of diseases, from gastrointestinal problems to Alzheimer's. CMPA affects up to 2 or 3 percent of infants and toddlers, according to the companies. Many others, however, have symptoms suggestive of the condition, creating a need for a simple diagnostic test. Under the terms of the agreement, DBV will be eligible to receive up to 90 million euros in development, regulatory and commercial milestones - on top of the upfront payment - and will also collect royalties on eventual product sales. “This innovation can become the breakthrough diagnostic for CMPA," said Greg Behar, chief executive of Nestl? Health Science. The new test will need to go through extensive clinical trials before it is cleared for sale and DBV expects it to be submitted for approval to regulators worldwide by 2021. Behar's division, which employs around 3,000 people, is an expanding part of Nestle's operations.
