For 34 Kashmiri pilgrims who travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, what was meant to be a spiritual journey has turned into an anxious wait to return home, with cancelled flights, mounting expenses and dwindling financial resources adding to their distress.Scheduled to return to Kashmir on October 13, the pilgrims remain stranded in Saudi Arabia, uncertain about when they will be able to reunite with their families. While some passengers have reportedly managed to return through connecting flights and indirect routes, the high cost of alternative travel has put such options beyond the reach of many. For those still stranded, the uncertainty is compounded by the steady depletion of their cash reserves. The pilgrims say they are struggling to meet basic expenses, while the prolonged separation from their families and the lack of clarity over their return have added to their mental distress. The pilgrims have appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene urgently and help secure their safe and early return to Jammu and Kashmir. They have urged the administration to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the concerned airlines to explore alternative arrangements and ensure that financial constraints do not leave them stranded indefinitely. As the wait continues, the pilgrims are hoping for swift government intervention to bring their ordeal to an end and help them return home safely.

Riyadh described the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims as a “red line.”The Houthis deny targeting Mecca. That dispute matters. But behind it lies a much larger question: after more than a decade of military pressure, why are Yemen's Houthis still capable of putting Saudi Arabia on alert?Since Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015, the Houthis have faced military action involving a remarkable collection of regional and global powers.Yet their military capabilities have expanded. The Associated Press reports that their arsenal now includes ballistic and cruise missiles, drones, anti-ship missiles and naval drones. The consequences now extend far beyond Yemen. The Houthis have advanced toward the Bab el-Mandeb, the narrow maritime gateway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Saudi oil infrastructure has also come under attack, including disruption to the kingdom's strategically important East-West Pipeline.Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman travelled to Egypt as Riyadh sought regional support. The Houthis are demonstrating military reach. Washington is exploring diplomacy. And global commerce remains exposed to whatever happens around the Red Sea.Saudi Arabia's warning over Mecca therefore carries significance far beyond one intercepted drone.Because declaring a red line is the easy part. The harder question is what happens when an adversary decides to test it.

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of intense regional diplomacy as Iran reportedly outlines six key conditions tied to any future agreement on the strategic waterway. The narrow maritime corridor carries a significant share of the world's oil and gas shipments, making its future a critical issue for global energy markets and regional security.

The reported conditions come amid ongoing discussions involving Gulf states and broader efforts to stabilize maritime traffic following months of heightened tensions. Analysts say the outcome of the negotiations could influence shipping routes, energy prices, and the balance of power across the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia: Mecca, Medina opens for foreign investors to boost development

Mecca, Saudi Arabia’s holiest city, experiences severe flooding following an intense downpour, causing significant disruption and damage in the region.

Mecca hit by extreme rain, Saudi Arabia's holiest city flooded

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intensified his criticism of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), claiming that the building’s architecture resembles 'Mecca,' one of Islam’s holiest sites.

Just days after accusing the university of conducting a so-called "flood jihad," Sarma on Monday (Aug 12) asserted that the institution was undermining education and that the dome entrance symbolised 'jihad.'

Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier blamed the construction work at the university for the flash floods in Guwahati.

Sarma said the university, situated in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, indulged in deforestation and cutting of hills, leading to the flash floods.

The university is operated by a foundation established by Mahbubul Hoque, a Bengali Muslim, who also serves as the chancellor.

Make all three… They have kept a ‘Mecca’ there. Let them make a namghar, make a church. We will walk under all three, why will we walk under just one,” The Indian Express quoted him as saying.

He accused the university administration of engaging in what he termed the "father of jihad."

“When I spoke about Meghalaya University of Science and Technology (USTM), everyone criticised me. But earlier, Tarun Gogoi had said that Jorabat is the main reason for floods in Guwahati,” he stated.

The Assam CM has claimed that the hills were cut towards Guwahati, not Meghalaya.

"Why did the hills cut towards Guwahati and not towards Meghalaya? Is this not flood jihad?" he said.

Last week, taking to X, Sarma posted satellite images of Meghalaya's Greater Jorabat Hills and said, "After the recent flash floods in Guwahati, we have gone through satellite images of Meghalaya's Greater Jorabat Hills, located 6-7 km from the city. The deforestation where USTM University is located is self-explanatory. But my concern is not just the area near USTM. Below is a time-lapse video of the destruction in other regions of the Greater Jorabat Hills in Meghalaya. It also explains how a cloud burst here leads to rapid floods in Guwahati, like the one recently. We will work with Meghalaya Govt to protect our shared habitats."

Slamming Sarma for his remark, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi wrote on X, “Can someone stop the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa, from his jihad of repeated nonsense? It is simply an exaggerated cover-up for his failures and scams."

A range of rituals are carried out by individuals to express their devotion towards Prophet Ibrahim and the principles of Islam.

According to officials in Saudi Arabia, more than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims visit Mecca every year for Hajj which occurs during the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and it is said that individuals physically and financially able must undertake Hajj once in their lifetime.

Since every year so many people visit Saudi Arabia, managing the crowd can be challenging. Back in 1987, a quota system was adopted that allowed only 0.1% of a country's population to visit.
