India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday (May 29) said that 1,080 Indians have been deported from the United States since President Donald Trump came into power in January 2025. It added that India has close cooperation with the US on migration issues, especially the deportation of illegal Indian nationals.&nbsp;“We have close cooperation between India and the United States on migration issues, on deportation of Indian nationals who are either in illegal status there or who travel illegally; we take them back once we receive details about them,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly briefing.&nbsp;He added, “The update on the numbers is that since January of 2025, we have some 1080 Indians who have come back or who have been deported from the United States. Of these, around 62 per cent have come on commercial flights.”&nbsp;Jaiswal also highlighted that India is aware of reports suggesting updated guidelines issued by the US government regarding Student and Exchange Visitor visa applicants.&nbsp;The MEA spokesperson stated that the welfare of Indian students abroad remains of “utmost priority” to the government and India will continue to follow further developments in the matter.&nbsp;“While we note that issuance of a visa is a sovereign function, we hope that the application of Indian students will be considered a merit, and they will be able to join their academic programs on time,” Jaiswal said.&nbsp;Trump administration pauses student visa appointments&nbsp;On Wednesday (May 28), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a memo ordering US embassies and consular offices to stop scheduling new appointments for student visas “until further guidance is issued”, as it gears up to expand social media screenings for applicants, reported Politico.&nbsp;“Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor … visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued [separate telegram], which we anticipate in the coming days,” read the cable.

Jaiswal also highlighted that India is aware of reports suggesting updated guidelines issued by the US government regarding Student and Exchange Visitor visa applicants.

Wagha Attari border will be closed starting immediately, but India gave a deadline to those who have crossed and come to India, to return back.&nbsp;
Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas now.&nbsp;
However, any visas issued in the past will be deemed cancelled now.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia has also implemented significant changes to its visa policy for travellers from 14 countries, including India, and suspended one-year multiple-entry visas.
Under the revised rules, visitors from the 14 affected countries can only obtain single-entry visas with a validity of 30 days. Hajj, Umrah, diplomatic, and residency visas remain unaffected by these restrictions. Saudi officials said some travellers enter on long-term visas and remain beyond their permitted stay to work or participate in Hajj without authorisation.
Hajj is an annual pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities of Islam in Saudi Arabia. The pilgrimage is performed during a particular period that culminates with Eid-ul-Adha. This year Hajj is expected to take place from June 4 to June 9, 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon marking the beginning of Zil-Hajj, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar.&nbsp;

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed Lok Sabha about steps taken by India to support its citizens facing deportation or other legal consequences due to their undocumented status in the US.
A total of 682 Indian nationals have been deported from the US since January 2025 till date, the minister said in a written response to a question.
"The vast majority of these deportees had attempted to enter the U.S. Illegally, but were apprehended at the US border itself and thereafter deported to India after due verification. As such, these deportations may not have any impact on the overall remittance flows to India," he said.

The issues of illegal immigration and human trafficking are also being addressed by taking strong action against bad actors, criminal facilitators, and illegal immigration networks, he said.

"The Government of India continues to work in close coordination with the US government on all instances of deportation of individuals who were found to have illegally entered the US, or have overstayed their visa validity, or have been found living in the US without any documentation or have criminal convictions against them.
"The list of persons identified for deportation by the US side is closely scrutinized and verified by the concerned agencies of the Government of India. Only those persons who have been verified to be Indian nationals are accepted to be deported to India," he said.

In response to a separate question on the issue, the minister noted that government does not maintain data on the number of people who may have entered the US via illegal means and routes.

<h2>What is Transfer of Sentenced Persons agreement?</h2>
According to the Transfer of Sentenced Persons agreement, a person serving a jail sentence in a country can be repatriated to their home country and can continue to serve the sentence there. The process, however, takes a lot of time and permission from various officials.
As per the MEA: &ldquo;Consent of the prisoner, host country and transferring country are required for transfer under TSP agreement. The Ministry of Home Affairs is the nodal authority overseeing the transfer of prisoners under TSP agreement and is currently processing a number of cases.&rdquo;
Despite the agreement, only eight people have been brought back from various jails across the world to serve their prison sentence in India between 2023 to 2025. They were repatriated from Iran (3), the United Kingdom (3), Russia (2) and Cambodia (2).
The Indian external affairs ministry also mentioned in the report that they provide help to these individuals via Indian missions, embassies, and posts as well.

Shahzadi Khan, a woman from Uttar Pradesh in India sentenced to death for killing a child in UAE, was executed on February 15, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the Delhi High Court on Monday (Mar 3).
Additional Solicitor General of India (ASG) Chetan Sharma stated that authorities are extending all possible assistance to her family, and her last rites would take place on March 5.
Her father, Shabbir Khan, had earlier approached the Delhi High Court on March 1, seeking a directive to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and appropriate authorities to issue a bulletin and ascertain information regarding the exact current legal status and well-being of his daughter.

<h2>Who was Shahzadi Khan?</h2>
Shahzadi Khan, a 33-year-old caregiver from Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, was convicted by an Abu Dhabi court for the death of a child under her care. She was sentenced to death on July 31, 2023.
She was allegedly deceived by a fraudster and trafficked to Abu Dhabi, where she was implicated in the crime that she had consistently denied committing.

According to her father&rsquo;s petition, Shahzadi Khan moved to Abu Dhabi in December 2021 on a legal visa. Khan was promised treatment in the UAE for her burn injuries by a man named Uzair, whom she befriended on Facebook. The man claimed to be a social worker and a businessman from Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
&ldquo;Uzair told her he would be able to get her better medical attention in the UAE and, circumstances permitting, even a job,&rdquo; her father said. &ldquo;He told her his uncle and aunt lived in Abu Dhabi and they could help with a tourist visa. And she could work for them while she was there.&rdquo;

Her father added that while she was hesitant, Uzair reassured her, saying that the visa was only for 90 days and she could return home after that.
However, after arriving in the Gulf country in November 2021, she discovered that her visa was for six months and that she had been &ldquo;sold&rdquo; to a married couple as a labourer for a hefty sum of money. There, she was tasked to look after the couple&rsquo;s four-month-old baby.

Things took a drastic turn when the baby died in February next year and Shahzadi was implicated by the couple, her father alleged.
She was &ldquo;trapped and forced to sign a false confession&rdquo; by the baby&rsquo;s mother, which led to her wrongful conviction, said her father.
Her father was informed last year that she was imprisoned in Al Batwa jail and could be executed any day after September 20, 2024.

Shahzadi Khan, a woman from Uttar Pradesh in India sentenced to death for killing a child in UAE, was executed on February 15, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the Delhi High Court on Monday (Mar 3). Her father, Shabbir Khan, had earlier approached the Delhi High Court on March 1, seeking a directive to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and appropriate authorities to issue a bulletin and ascertain information regarding the exact current legal status and well-being of his daughter. Shahzadi Khan, a 33-year-old caregiver from Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, was convicted by an Abu Dhabi court for the death of a child under her care. She was sentenced to death on July 31, 2023. She was allegedly deceived by a fraudster and trafficked to Abu Dhabi, where she was implicated in the crime that she had consistently denied committing. Khan was promised treatment in the UAE for her burn injuries by a man named Uzair, whom she befriended on Facebook. The man claimed to be a social worker and a businessman from Agra in Uttar Pradesh. “Uzair told her he would be able to get her better medical attention in the UAE and, circumstances permitting, even a job,” her father said. “He told her his uncle and aunt lived in Abu Dhabi and they could help with a tourist visa. However, after arriving in the Gulf country in November 2021, she discovered that her visa was for six months and that she had been “sold” to a married couple as a labourer for a hefty sum of money. There, she was tasked to look after the couple’s four-month-old baby. She was “trapped and forced to sign a false confession” by the baby’s mother, which led to her wrongful conviction, said her father. "The US Supreme Court on 21 January 2025 declined to hear a petition from the accused. We are now working with the US side on procedural issues for early extradition to India of the accused in the Mumbai terror attack," the MEA spokesperson said. India has long sought the extradition of Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin. He is wanted in the 2008 Mumbai Taj Hotel terror attack, which killed more than 160 people.
<h2>On the ongoing conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo</h2>
MEA said that they are closely following the developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). "We remain concerned at the deteriorating security situation. We call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict," MEA said.&nbsp;
Jaiswal added that the Indian Embassy in Kinshasa has issued advisories for Indians living in the Goma. "There are about 1000 Indian nationals who were living in Goma, but most of them have moved to safer places since the outbreak of the conflict. The Embassy remains in regular touch with the community for their welfare and safety," Jaiswal said.

Jaiswal said that India and Bangladesh security chiefs will discuss border-related issues from February 17 to 20, 2025, in New Delhi. "We expect all mutually agreed-upon MOUs and Agreements to be honoured. These form the basis for structured engagements between the border guarding forces and facilitate the creation of mutually beneficial security and trade infrastructure along the border," Jaiswal said.

Their families lost contact with them shortly after their arrival in Iran," Jaiswal said.

India on Friday (Dec 6) called on Pakistan to take decisive action against Masood Azhar, the mastermind of the 2001 Indian Parliament attack and the Pulwama attack, after reports emerged of him addressing a gathering for the first time in two decades. In the speech, Azhar vowed to renew jihadist operations targeting India and Israel to establish a global Islamic order.

"He is an UN-designated terrorist. We demand that strong action be taken against him so that he is brought to justice. There has been a denial that he is not there in Pakistan. According to news agency Reuters, Canada’s signals intelligence agency, which tracks foreign cyber threats, suggested on Wednesday that India was likely already engaged in cyber activities threatening Canadian networks, allegedly for espionage purposes.

Canada’s Communications Security Establishment (CSE) chief, Caroline Xavier, was quoted in the report, saying, "As Canada and India potentially may have some tensions, it is possible that we may see India want to flex those cyber threat actions against Canadians."

India has also accused Canada of "harassment and intimidation" by subjecting its consular officials there to audio and video surveillance, actions New Delhi claims violate diplomatic norms.

Responding to questions at a press briefing, Jaiswal said, "Yes, some of our consular officials were recently informed by the Canadian government that they have been and continued to be under audio and video surveillance. Their communications have also been intercepted. We have formally protested to the Canadian government, as we deem these actions to be in flagrant violation of relevant diplomatic and consular conventions."

Jaiswal further criticised Canada, saying, "The Canadian government cannot justify the fact that it is indulging in harassment and intimidation."

The two countries' relations have been strained since Canadian PM&nbsp;Trudeau&nbsp;last year&nbsp;alleged that Indian agents might have been involved in the killing of Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday (Nov 2) addressed the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on over a dozen Indian companies for their alleged ties to Russia amid its ongoing war with Ukraine.&nbsp;

On Wednesday (Oct 30), the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against nearly 400 firms and individuals from 17 countries, calling them “Third-Country Sanctions Evaders.” This list included 19 Indian companies, which, according to the US, have been assisting Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.

Responding to these developments, the MEA said, “We have seen reports on US sanctions. India has a robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade and nonproliferation controls. We are also a member of three key multilateral non-proliferation export control regimes - the Wassenaar Arrangement, the Australia Group and the Missile Technology Control Regime, and have been effectively implementing relevant UNSC sanctions and UNSC resolution 1540 on non-proliferation.”

MEA added, “Our understanding is that the sanctioned transactions and companies are not in violation of Indian laws. Nevertheless, in keeping with India's established non-proliferation credentials, we are working with all the relevant Indian departments and agencies to sensitise Indian companies on applicable export control provisions, as well as inform them on new measures being implemented that could impact Indian companies in certain circumstances.”&nbsp;

“Regular strategic trade/export control outreach events for Indian industries and stakeholders are being carried out by agencies of the Government of India. We are also in touch with the US authorities to clarify issues,” MEA said in its statement.&nbsp;

In addition to Indian firms, the US sanctions also targeted companies from Malaysia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Singapore, and the UAE. Among the Indian companies mentioned was Ascend Aviation India Private Limited, which, according to the US State Department, allegedly sent over 700 shipments to Russian firms from March 2023 to March 2024, including aircraft components valued at over $200,000.

Other Indian businesses listed in the sanctions include Mask Trans, TSMD Global, Elektron Komponent, and Futrevo.

This move by the US comes shortly after it named an Indian official in an alleged plot involving a foiled murder-for-hire targeting Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. With diplomatic tensions already strained, these sanctions are likely to add further challenges to US-India relations.
