The auction house— Alexander Historical Auctions —that put the watch for bidding had estimated it to fetch anywhere between $2m and $4m, Deutsche Welle reported. It was described as a "World War II relic of historic proportions."

According to the auction house, a French soldier part of a unit of 30 soldiers had taken possession of the watch.&nbsp;The timepiece was then reportedly resold and passed down through several generations until now, BBC quoted the assessment by the auction house.

Apart from the watch, some other articles that once belonged to Hitler were also&nbsp;sold in the auction. These include a dress that belonged to Hitler's wife, Eva Braun, autographed pictures of Nazi officials and a yellow cloth Star of David imprinted with the word "Jude", which is German for Jew.

During the holocaust, the Jewish people were forced by the Nazis to wear the yellow identifiers as armbands or badges, with the intention to isolate and harass them.

However, Jewish leaders condemned the auction that took place this week in Maryland saying that it had little to no historical value.

In an open letter signed by 34 Jewish leaders, the auction was termed "abhorrent". They also demanded that other Nazi items to be taken down from the auction.

“Whilst it is obvious that the lessons of history need to be learned — and legitimate Nazi artefacts do belong in museums or places of higher learning — the items that you are selling clearly do not," said Rabbi Menachem Margolin, chairman of the European Jewish Association wrote, according to BBC.

However, auction house's president&nbsp;Bill Panagopulos&nbsp;defended the auction saying that the buyer is a European Jew.

"Whether good or bad history, it must be preserved. If you destroy history, there is no proof that it happened,” Senior Vice President Mindy Greenstein told Deutsche Welle.

"Training was wrapping up when one of our chiefs spotted 2 people running across the lake. &nbsp;In less than 15 seconds of the teens being spotted running across, the ice broke and they were in the water" said the fire department, in a Facebook post describing the incident.

"The crew that was still present went into response mode along with the two chiefs. &nbsp;A full response was requested. &nbsp;The Maryland Heights Fire Protection District crew along with the Pattonville Fire Protection District assisted by Creve Coeur Fire Protection District responded. &nbsp;The initial crew were able to get 4 rescuers on the ice and remove the victims in a very timely fashion."

Heroic jump from man into water saves toddler after multivehicle crash

Maryland lawmakers voted Saturday to limit police officers’ use of force, restrict the use of no-knock warrants and repeal the nation’s first Bill of Rights for law enforcement, taking sweeping action to address police violence after nationwide demonstrations following the death of George Floyd.

The Democratic-led legislature enacted the changes by overriding Gov. Larry Hogan’s vetoes during a session in which some Black lawmakers read aloud the names of people they said had been killed by police officers in the state.

The changes placed Maryland at the forefront of a national debate over police brutality and the use of excessive force, a discussion that has gained intensity since Floyd was killed in police custody last year, setting off protests across the country. The legislation was passed in the middle of the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer who is accused of the murder of Floyd by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes.

“This is what the community wants — they want reform, they want transparency, and they want accountability,” said Caylin A. Young, public policy director of the ACLU of Maryland, which was part of a coalition of 90 groups that had backed the bills. “There needs to be a reimagining of what policing in Maryland looks like.”

Hogan, a Republican, had vetoed the measures on Friday, saying their original intent had been “overtaken by political agendas that do not serve the public safety needs of the citizens of Maryland.” He said the changes would “further erode police morale, community relationships and public confidence.”

Police groups also criticized the legislature’s action.

“The reality is they have reinvented policing in the state of Maryland,” said Angelo Consoli, second vice president and legislative committee chair of the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police. “They’re going to make it tougher for the police to police. There’s reform, and this went beyond reform.”

The wide-ranging changes were intended to address many of the concerns raised by demonstrators who have protested police violence after the deaths of Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black people killed by officers.

One section creates a new statewide use-of-force policy and says that officers who violate those standards, causing serious injury or death, can be convicted and sent to prison for up to 10 years. The standard says that force can be used only to prevent “an imminent threat of physical injury” to a person or to “effectuate a legitimate law enforcement objective.”

The policy also says that force must be “necessary and proportional.” Police reform groups said that was a tougher standard than the traditional “reasonableness” standard, which they said was not sufficient for holding officers accountable for blatant acts of violence. Consoli said the change would deter the police from intervening in volatile situations and open them to more “Monday morning quarterbacking.”

In another change, law enforcement agencies statewide must establish a system to identify police officers who are considered likely to use excessive force and to retrain, counsel or, if needed, reassign them.

The legislature also repealed Maryland’s Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights, which was the nation’s first such law when it was enacted in the 1970s. It gave every officer statewide the right to appeal discipline to a local board, regardless of a city’s wishes.

Maryland lawmakers replaced those protections by requiring every county to have a police accountability board to receive complaints of misconduct from the public.

Civilians will have a role on administrative charging committees that will review the findings of law enforcement agencies and recommend discipline for officers. Police chiefs will not be able to issue disciplinary actions more lenient than the level recommended by those panels.

Lawmakers also limited the use of “no-knock” warrants, which gained nationwide attention last year after police in Louisville, Kentucky, fatally shot Taylor when they were fired upon after breaking down her apartment door. Officers have said that they first announced their presence, but most witnesses disagreed.

Other changes in Maryland include the requirement that, by 2025, all law enforcement officers who regularly interact with the public must wear body cameras. Officers will also be prohibited from preventing people from recording them, as long as that person is “acting lawfully and safely.”

The bills also made some changes that the police consider favorable.

Police officers will have whistle-blower protections and may engage in off-duty political activity and have the right to work at second jobs. Loan assistance and scholarship programs were established for officers who are attending college, and prior marijuana use will not be a disqualification for hiring.

Adrienne Jones, speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, said in a Facebook post on Saturday evening that the state was “leading the country in transforming our broken policing system.”

“Now, for the first time in our nation’s history,” she wrote, “the rights of officers will not be held above the rights of individuals, and policing in Maryland will be transparent and citizen-centered.”

Maryland lawmakers voted Saturday to limit police officers’ use of force, restrict the use of no-knock warrants and repeal the nation’s first Bill of Rights for law enforcement, taking sweeping action to address police violence after nationwide demonstrations following the death of George Floyd. The Democratic-led legislature enacted the changes by overriding Gov. Larry Hogan’s vetoes during a session in which some Black lawmakers read aloud the names of people they said had been killed by police officers in the state. The changes placed Maryland at the forefront of a national debate over police brutality and the use of excessive force, a discussion that has gained intensity since Floyd was killed in police custody last year, setting off protests across the country. The legislation was passed in the middle of the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer who is accused of the murder of Floyd by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes. “This is what the community wants — they want reform, they want transparency, and they want accountability,” said Caylin A. Young, public policy director of the ACLU of Maryland, which was part of a coalition of 90 groups that had backed the bills. “There needs to be a reimagining of what policing in Maryland looks like.” Hogan, a Republican, had vetoed the measures on Friday, saying their original intent had been “overtaken by political agendas that do not serve the public safety needs of the citizens of Maryland.” He said the changes would “further erode police morale, community relationships and public confidence.” Police groups also criticized the legislature’s action. “The reality is they have reinvented policing in the state of Maryland,” said Angelo Consoli, second vice president and legislative committee chair of the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police. “They’re going to make it tougher for the police to police. There’s reform, and this went beyond reform.” The wide-ranging changes were intended to address many of the concerns raised by demonstrators who have protested police violence after the deaths of Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black people killed by officers. One section creates a new statewide use-of-force policy and says that officers who violate those standards, causing serious injury or death, can be convicted and sent to prison for up to 10 years. The standard says that force can be used only to prevent “an imminent threat of physical injury” to a person or to “effectuate a legitimate law enforcement objective.” The policy also says that force must be “necessary and proportional.” Police reform groups said that was a tougher standard than the traditional “reasonableness” standard, which they said was not sufficient for holding officers accountable for blatant acts of violence. Consoli said the change would deter the police from intervening in volatile situations and open them to more “Monday morning quarterbacking.” In another change, law enforcement agencies statewide must establish a system to identify police officers who are considered likely to use excessive force and to retrain, counsel or, if needed, reassign them. The legislature also repealed Maryland’s Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights, which was the nation’s first such law when it was enacted in the 1970s. It gave every officer statewide the right to appeal discipline to a local board, regardless of a city’s wishes. Maryland lawmakers replaced those protections by requiring every county to have a police accountability board to receive complaints of misconduct from the public. Civilians will have a role on administrative charging committees that will review the findings of law enforcement agencies and recommend discipline for officers. Police chiefs will not be able to issue disciplinary actions more lenient than the level recommended by those panels. Lawmakers also limited the use of “no-knock” warrants, which gained nationwide attention last year after police in Louisville, Kentucky, fatally shot Taylor when they were fired upon after breaking down her apartment door. Officers have said that they first announced their presence, but most witnesses disagreed. Other changes in Maryland include the requirement that, by 2025, all law enforcement officers who regularly interact with the public must wear body cameras. Officers will also be prohibited from preventing people from recording them, as long as that person is “acting lawfully and safely.” The bills also made some changes that the police consider favorable. Police officers will have whistle-blower protections and may engage in off-duty political activity and have the right to work at second jobs. Loan assistance and scholarship programs were established for officers who are attending college, and prior marijuana use will not be a disqualification for hiring. Adrienne Jones, speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, said in a Facebook post on Saturday evening that the state was “leading the country in transforming our broken policing system.” “Now, for the first time in our nation’s history,” she wrote, “the rights of officers will not be held above the rights of individuals, and policing in Maryland will be transparent and citizen-centered.”

Maryland and the US capital sued President Donald Trump Monday, saying he is breaking laws by raking in money from foreign governments and businesses at his luxury hotels and office towers.

The lawsuit said heavy spending by foreign diplomats and embassies at the Trump International Hotel just a few blocks from the White House, payments by foreign entities at his Trump Tower and Trump International Tower in New York, and other business operations effectively violate the US Constitution&#39;s ban on presidents enriching themselves while in office.

&quot;The suit alleges that president Trump is flagrantly violating the constitution, which explicitly bars presidents from receiving gifts or inducements from foreign or domestic government entities,&quot; said Washington Attorney General Karl Racine.

Corruption &#39;firewall&#39;

The suit detailed the popularity&nbsp;of the opulent Trump International Hotel with foreign officials since his January 20 inauguration, alleging that the hotel &quot;has specifically marketed itself to the diplomatic community.&quot;

It pointed to news reports of Asian and Middle Eastern diplomats saying they will go there to impress the president. Kuwait held its national day celebration at the hotel, and Saudi Arabia has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars there, the suit claims.

In New York, Trump Tower leases space to the Chinese government-controlled bank ICBC and Trump World Tower and other properties also focus on foreign clients, including Russians, it said.

The suit also alleged that Trump benefits from foreign distribution payments for his &quot;The Apprentice&quot; reality TV show and generally from the international real estate projects of the Trump Organisation.

Those benefits violate the US Constitution&#39;s &quot;emoluments clauses&quot;, which ban US officials from taking gifts or other benefits from foreign governments, the suit argues.

The focus on Trump International Hotel stems in part from businesses in Washington and Maryland, some partly owned by the local governments,&nbsp;complaining that its link to the president effectively gives it an unfair competitive advantage.

The lawsuit followed an earlier similar complaint by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, filed on January 23 in New York federal district court.

On Friday the Justice Department asked the court to drop that complaint, saying Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington had no grounds to sue because it had not experienced any loss in relation to Trump.

It also argued that the emoluments clause was never intended to target a president&#39;s private businesses, unconnected with his official office or actions.

&quot;Were plaintiffs&#39; interpretation correct, presidents from the very beginning of the republic, including George Washington, would have received prohibited &#39;emoluments,&#39;&quot; the department said.

Asked Mnday about the lawsuits, White House spokesman Sean Spicer branded them political.

"The suit alleges that president Trump is flagrantly violating the constitution, which explicitly bars presidents from receiving gifts or inducements from foreign or domestic government entities," said Washington Attorney General Karl Racine. "Never in the history of this country have we had a president with these kinds of extensive business entanglements. Or a president who refused to adequately distance themselves from their holdings," Racine said. The suit says that despite billionaire Trump having placed his extensive business holdings in a trust after he was elected president, he still owns the properties and is well-aware of the money they are earning him. "Although he formed a trust to hold his business assets, he may obtain distributions from his trust at any time," it said. Corruption 'firewall' The suit detailed the popularity of the opulent Trump International Hotel with foreign officials since his January 20 inauguration, alleging that the hotel "has specifically marketed itself to the diplomatic community." It pointed to news reports of Asian and Middle Eastern diplomats saying they will go there to impress the president. Kuwait held its national day celebration at the hotel, and Saudi Arabia has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars there, the suit claims. In New York, Trump Tower leases space to the Chinese government-controlled bank ICBC and Trump World Tower and other properties also focus on foreign clients, including Russians, it said. The suit also alleged that Trump benefits from foreign distribution payments for his "The Apprentice" reality TV show and generally from the international real estate projects of the Trump Organisation. Those benefits violate the US Constitution's "emoluments clauses", which ban US officials from taking gifts or other benefits from foreign governments, the suit argues. "The emolument clauses are a firewall against presidential corruption," said Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh. "He's going to have to answer in court." The focus on Trump International Hotel stems in part from businesses in Washington and Maryland, some partly owned by the local governments, complaining that its link to the president effectively gives it an unfair competitive advantage. The lawsuit followed an earlier similar complaint by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, filed on January 23 in New York federal district court. On Friday the Justice Department asked the court to drop that complaint, saying Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington had no grounds to sue because it had not experienced any loss in relation to Trump. It also argued that the emoluments clause was never intended to target a president's private businesses, unconnected with his official office or actions. "Were plaintiffs' interpretation correct, presidents from the very beginning of the republic, including George Washington, would have received prohibited 'emoluments,'" the department said. Asked Mnday about the lawsuits, White House spokesman Sean Spicer branded them political. "It's not hard to conclude that partisan politics may be one of the motivations," he said.
