<h2>BAFTA controversy</h2>BAFTA Film Awards 2026 have been in the news not for its winners but for the controversies it has been courting. BAFTA and BBC have had to issue apologies after a racial slur was used while Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage to present an award. During the BAFTA film awards, John Davidson, the subject of the movie I Swear, could be heard shouting various expletives throughout the ceremony due to his Tourette’s. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday (Mar 11) announced financial assistance of Rs 500 crore ($57,310,827) for violence-hit Manipur to bolster its economy. The move will help the war-torn state to establish a contingency fund.
The allocation was announced in the Lok Sabha as her response to the discussion on Supplementary Demands for Grants for the year 2024-25, Demands for Additional Grants for the year 2021-22 and Budget of Manipur for the year 2025-26.
&ldquo;We are providing all possible financial assistance for the faster recovery of the Manipur economy,&rdquo; she said.

<h2>Finance minister slams Opposition</h2>
During the Budget session of Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 11), Nirmala Sitharaman also hit back at the Opposition for criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur amid violence.
She said that when 750 people died in the northeastern state in 1993, the then Congress prime minister PV Narsimha Rao and his home minister did not visit the state.

Several thousand arms were looted from police in different places in Manipur during the initial phase of the ethnic violence that began about 22 months ago.
Since taking over the charge of governor on January 3, Bhalla has been meeting with sections of people, taking feed back from them on how to bring back normalcy in the northeastern state.

A CRPF jawan allegedly killed two of his colleagues and injured eight others before taking his own life at a camp in Manipur on Thursday (Feb 13), official sources said.
The incident took place at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Lamsang located in the Imphal West district at around 8.20 pm, they said.
The accused, Havildar Sanjay Kumar, opened fire from his weapon killing a constable and a sub-inspector of the force on the spot. He later turned the gun on himself and has been declared dead, the sources said.

The accused belonged to the F company of the 120th battalion of the force. Eight CRPF personnel have been injured in the firing and they have been shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, they said.
The Manipur Police issued a post on X, saying "In an unfortunate incident, tonight at around 8 pm, a suspected case of fratricide happened inside a CRPF camp in Lamsang under Imphal West District wherein one CRPF jawan opened fire killing 02 (two) of his own CRPF colleagues on the spot and injuring 08 (eight) others."

"Later, he also committed suicide by using a service weapon. The personnel belonged to F-120 Coy CRPF. Senior officers of Police and CRPF have rushed to the spot," the police said.
The cause of the incident is being investigated and there was no official word from the CRPF immediately.

Singh, who led the BJP government in Manipur, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi earlier in the day. After his meeting, he, along with state ministers and MLAs, went to meet the Manipur governor.
His decision to step down comes just a day after he said that his government is committed to restoring peace in the conflict-hit region. &ldquo;The state government has been making all possible efforts to restore peace and to ensure that people live together peacefully as before,&rdquo; PTI quoted Singh as saying.
