A 35-year old senior executive at a software company in Singapore, who made racially offensive tweets in April last year, including slurs to Indians and condemning Indian immigrants about COVID-19, was jailed for three weeks on Tuesday, a media report said.

Zainal Abidin Shaiful Bahari, a Malay, pleaded guilty to two charges each of committing acts he knew were prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different racial groups in Singapore. Another two similar charges were considered in sentencing, Channel News Asia reported.

District Judge S Jennifer Marie said that race and religion are sensitive issues and would-be offenders must realise that careless remarks have the potential to cause social disorder.

"Further, when such remarks are published with the medium of the Internet, they have the ubiquitous reach and therefore amplify the potential and irreversible harm that could be caused to...Peace and racial harmony."

She added that racial tensions have been heightened by the continued pandemic and a strong deterrent signal must be sent.

Zainal was identified and police investigations revealed that he had set up the Twitter account in July 2018 with two other friends.

It was meant to be a parody account and had more than 5,000 followers, but the posts by Zainal's two friends stopped from early 2019.

Zainal took sole control of the account and posted the offensive tweets in March and April 2020.

The prosecutor called for four weeks' jail, saying there was a clear need for general deterrence, especially in the current climate where tensions in the community have been heightened and strained by exceptional pandemic circumstances.

Lawyer Sunil Sudheesan asked instead for three weeks' jail, saying that every action by his client must be viewed "in the proper context".

"He's not a racist, obviously," said Sudheesan. Zainal is married to a Chinese woman and has racially diverse friends.

Sudheesan said everyone, who followed the account knew it was a parody, and things could have become inflamed when people who did not know the intention of certain tweets forwarded them.

"Our client is very sorry for this. He should have anticipated this," the Channel quoted the lawyer as saying. 
The prosecutor responded that Zainal had well crossed the line.

"This was not parody, this was not satirical behaviour, this was simply the actions of an online troll who was provoking others...This is really not acceptable," he said. The judge told Zainal that the language used in his tweets were in bad taste.

"If you had really valued racial and cultural diversity, you should have appreciated all the more the need to preserve ... Sensitivities given the multi-cultural fabric of Singapore," she said.

For each charge of committing an act prejudicial to racial harmony, Zainal could have been jailed up to three years, fined, or both.&nbsp;

His death on Jan. 5 has drawn protests and comparisons to the killing of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.

The settlement came as many Americans paused Tuesday to remember Floyd one year after his death, which became a catalyst for a nationwide reckoning on police brutality and systemic racism.

It followed the firing May 17 of the two deputies involved in Sutherland’s death, an encounter that was shown in graphic video footage that was released this month by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. One of the deputies placed a knee on Sutherland’s back.

Before the settlement was approved, the county and the Sutherland family had been engaged in mediation talks in an effort to avoid formal litigation, the television station WCSC reported. The council’s finance committee earlier recommended that the full council approve a $10 million settlement, according to local news media outlets.

Councilman Teddie E. Pryor Sr. said during the meeting that he had promised the Sutherland family that he would look into what reforms to public safety could be enacted.

“This should never happen to anyone ever again,” Pryor said. “Ever.”

A lawyer for Sutherland’s family did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night.

The payout adds to a list of eight-figure settlements in several high-profile killings of Black people involving law enforcement officers. In March, Floyd’s family reached a $27 million settlement with the City of Minneapolis. This month, officials in Columbus, Ohio, agreed to pay $10 million to the family of Andre Hill, a Black man who was fatally shot by a police officer in a garage in December.

C. Brantley Moody, a member of the Charleston County Council, said during the group’s meeting Tuesday that he had grappled with whether to support the settlement. He acknowledged that “globally, this race to the courthouse” troubled him.

“What was done was a terrible injustice,” Moody said. “But how do you settle it? I don’t know what the answer is.”

The local prosecutor is expected to decide in June whether the deputies, Sgt. Lindsay Fickett and Detention Deputy Brian Houle, will face criminal charges in Sutherland’s death. The prosecutor, Scarlett A. Wilson, the 9th Circuit solicitor, said this month that she was reviewing the results of an investigation into the deputies’ actions conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Fickett and Houle had been placed on administrative leave before their firing was announced May 17 on Twitter by Kristin Graziano, the Charleston County sheriff.

The deputies had been trying to remove Sutherland from a cell at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, the county jail, to take him to court for a bond hearing Jan. 5 when the deadly encounter took place.

In the video footage released by the sheriff, the deputies were seen using pepper spray in Sutherland’s cell two times before firing Tasers at him. Sutherland had been hit with the Taser six to eight times, Houle later said in the video.

The video showed Sutherland writhing on the ground before he eventually lost consciousness. Soon after, he was declared dead, with a pathologist ruling that the manner of his death was “undetermined.” The pathologist stated that Sutherland had died “as a result of excited state with pharmacotherapeutic effect during subdual process.”

Officials would not discuss the autopsy results further and said that the post-mortem examination report would not be released because it was not a public document.

Sutherland was taken to the jail from a mental health facility, Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health, where he had been arrested Jan. 4 after a fight broke out. Workers at the mental health center told responding officers that Sutherland had assaulted a staff member. He and another patient were charged with third-degree assault and battery, according to The Post and Courier of Charleston.

County reaches $10 million settlement in jailed Black man’s death

A police officer in Huntsville, Alabama, was convicted of murder Friday for fatally shooting a man who had called 911 to report that he was suicidal and who was holding a gun to his head when police arrived, prosecutors said.

The officer, William Darby, who had been strongly defended by the Police Department and cleared of wrongdoing by a city review board, will face 20 years to life in prison when he is sentenced for the killing of Jeffrey Parker, 49, on April 3, 2018, according to prosecutors.

The verdict stunned city leaders, who had maintained that Darby was justified in using deadly force. The Huntsville City Council had voted to dedicate $125,000 in public money for the officer’s criminal defense, according to AL.com. And police officers throughout Alabama had been watching the case because of how frequently they respond to mental health crises.

“We are in the first stages of shock,” Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray said in a statement. “While we thank the jury for their service in this difficult case, I do not believe Officer Darby is a murderer. Officers are forced to make split-second decisions every day, and Officer Darby believed his life and the lives of other officers were in danger.”

Prosecutors said the evidence showed that the first officer on the scene, Genisha Pegues, had been trying to help Parker when Darby showed up. Darby, who was 25 and had been on the force for about 18 months, shot Parker 11 seconds after entering his house, according to Martin Weinberg, a lawyer who represents Parker’s family.

“In this particular case, there was zero hostility or aggression by Mr. Parker when the officers arrived,” Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard said at a news conference. Yet Darby’s response was “off the charts,” he said.

“The facts of the case bore out that there was nothing justified about this encounter with Mr. Parker, and justice was served,” Broussard said.

Officers called to Parker’s house found him “suicidal” and holding a gun, the police said in a statement in August 2018. After Parker disregarded several orders to drop his weapon, Darby fatally shot him, the police said.

According to a lawsuit filed by Parker’s family, Darby was the third officer to arrive at Parker’s house that day.

Pegues had entered with her gun pointed down and found Parker sitting on a couch with a gun to his head, according to the lawsuit. She had been talking to him when Darby arrived about five minutes later, according to the lawsuit.

Darby began screaming at Pegues while he was still in the front yard, according to the lawsuit, telling her to point her gun at Parker because “he can shoot you!” Darby then repeatedly yelled at Parker to put his gun down before firing the single shot that killed Parker, the lawsuit states.

About a month later, a review board convened by the Huntsville Police Department concluded that Darby’s use of deadly force had been “within policy,” the city said.

But a Madison County grand jury indicted the officer in August 2018.

At Darby’s trial, Pegues testified that she had never felt that Parker was a threat, and a prosecutor argued that Darby had been the initial aggressor, according to WSFA, a local television station.

Darby’s lawyer, Robert Tuten, contended that Darby had not been the initial aggressor and had been protecting not only himself but his fellow officers, WFSA reported. After the verdict on Friday, Tuten vowed to appeal.

“To say that people are shocked by this verdict would be a big understatement,” Tuten said at a news conference. “This was a very important case to Alabama law enforcement,” he added, and could affect the way officers throughout the state respond to people with guns and threats of suicide.

“Everybody has been watching this,” Tuten said.

Mayor Tommy Battle said that he disagreed with the verdict and that Darby had the right to appeal. “Officer Darby followed the appropriate safety protocols in his response on the scene,” he said in a statement. “He was doing what he was trained to do in the line of duty.”

Bill Parks, a longtime friend of Parker's, said he hoped that the conviction would prompt officers to respond more humanely to people in mental health crises.

At a news conference Friday, Parks said his friend had been “a very kind soul” who had loved music and “could fix anything” but who had also had his “demons.”

“He just asked for help,” Parks said. “He wanted help, and what ended up in a situation where he asked for help turned out terribly.”

Williams' experience was the first case of wrongful arrest due to facial recognition technology to come to light in the US, according to the ACLU.&nbsp;

"I came home from work and was arrested in my driveway in front of my wife and daughters, who watched in tears, because a computer made an error," Williams said in a statement.&nbsp;

"This never should have happened, and I want to make sure that this painful experience never happens to anyone else."&nbsp;

After a shoplifter allegedly stole several watches at a Shinola store in Detroit in 2018, Detroit police officers tried to identify the thief by using a blurry image from the store's surveillance camera video and feeding it through facial recognition technology.&nbsp;

The lawsuit cites studies that show that facial recognition technology is poor at accurately identifying Black people, especially in cases like this one when the photo is grainy, the lighting is poor, and the suspect is not looking at the camera.&nbsp;

Williams was held for 30 hours in a Detroit detention centre where he was forced to sleep on a raised cement slab due to overcrowding.&nbsp;

"We know that facial recognition technology threatens everyone's privacy by turning everybody into a suspect," said Phil Mayor, Senior Staff Attorney for the ACLU of Michigan.&nbsp;

"We've repeatedly urged the Detroit Police Department to abandon its use of this dangerous technology, but it insists on using it anyhow."&nbsp;

Each of the homemade bombs included six inches of PVC pipe, a small clock, a battery, wiring and energetic material, defined by Wray as potentially explosive.

Gregory Bush, 51, a white man, has been charged with shooting Maurice Stallard, 69, in front of his grandson as they shopped in a Kroger Inc&nbsp;grocery store in Jeffersontown, some 15 miles (24 km) from downtown Louisville. According to an arrest citation, he then went to the parking lot and shot Vickie Jones, 67.

Bush has been charged with murder and 10 counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.&nbsp;

"Federal investigators are supporting local law enforcement and examining this matter from the perspective of federal criminal law, which includes potential civil rights violations such as hate crimes," U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman said in a statement on Friday.

An armed bystander with a carry permit for a concealed weapon exchanged gunfire with Bush in the parking lot before the suspect fled in his car. He was apprehended shortly afterwards, police said.

Ed Harrell told the Louisville Courier Journal that he pulled out his pistol as Bush approached him in the parking lot and Bush told him not to shoot as "whites don`t kill whites."&nbsp;

It was not immediately clear if Bush had legal representation.

Police officers stormed into the rail carriage and took the man into custody after the train, carrying some 880 passengers, made an emergency stop at Odawara station.

Police arrested the 22-year-old unemployed suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, a local police spokesman told AFP.

"A male passenger was sent to hospital and his death was confirmed later," the spokesman said.

News reports said two women who appeared to be in their twenties were wounded but their injuries were not life-threatening.

The suspect told investigators that he felt "frustrated and wanted to kill someone", public broadcaster NHK said, adding that he used at least two knives.

Witnesses said passengers fled in panic, some of them in tears.

"All of a sudden, a lot of passengers were dashing from behind. People panicked", a 44-year-old male passenger told the Mainichi Shimbun.

"Everyone appeared to be feeling the strain and some of them cried," he said.&nbsp

A female passenger told NHK: "Everyone fled and fell like one domino falling after another. I was scared to death."

Salla has drawn the wrath of the private flyer, Jet Airways, as he had left a hoax hijack message on a Mumbai-Delhi flight he had boarded on October 20, 2017. He has been barred from boarding any Jet flight for the next five years.&nbsp;

The miscreant, who occupied seat 1A of flight 9W 339, had left a note of terror in the business class lavatory. &nbsp;"9W 339 is covered by hijackers and a/c (aircraft) should not land and (be) flown straight to POK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir). 12 ppl (sic) on board. If you put landing you can hear the noise of people dying. Don't take it as a joke. Cargo area contains explosive bombs and will blast if you land in DEL (Delhi)," he had written.

Reacting to the situation, the flight crew had diverted the plane to Ahmedabad. However, no explosive materials were found on-board in the search conducted by the bomb squad.

An inquiry conducted by the Jet Airways found Salla to have left the hoax note which led to massive inconvenience for his fellow passengers.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has confirmed Salla's case to be the first of a passenger being included in the no-fly-list. The regulatory authority said other carriers would be given the option to extend the ban imposed on Salla.

Salla has been barred under the highest category - level three of on-board unruly passengers. Those offences included in this category are "damage to aircraft operating systems, serious physical violence and attempted or actual breach of cockpit". The violators could be grounded from a range of three years to a lifetime.

A man knocked the doors of the Delhi High Court in search of a woman whom he claimed to be his wife but she refused to go with him telling the court that she never married him.

The woman also denied the man’s claim that she was detained illegally by her brother and maintained that she was living with him willingly. She told the court that the ‘nikahnama’ (marriage certificate) claimed by the man was not genuine as she was forced to sign blank papers after being taken forcibly in a car.

With these facts coming up in the court proceedings, a bench of justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta refused to be drawn into any further claims and counter-claims and held that it was satisfied that the woman was living with the brother of her own free will and was under “no restraint or illegal detention”. The court disposed of a habeas corpus petition filed by the man seeking direction to the woman’s brother to produce the woman, whom he claimed to have married on July 26, 2017, and said it was “not inclined to issue any directions in this petition”.

“This court would not like to enter into this controversy at this stage because as far as the habeas corpus petition is concerned, the court has to satisfy itself that the person whose production is sought by the petitioner is not under any restraint and is not being detained by anyone against that person’s wishes. “In this case, the court is satisfied that as of date, the woman is living of her own free will with her brother and is under no restraint or illegal detention. The court, accordingly, is not inclined to issue any directions in this petition,” the bench said.

The judges spoke to the woman and her brother in their chamber where she said that “no valid” marriage was performed between her and the man and she does not wish to go with him. The woman also maintained that she was staying with her brother and his family willingly and her date of birth in her Aadhaar card, produced by the man, was erroneous. The judges, thereafter, called the man and his counsel in their chamber and conveyed to them the stand of the woman. The man also denied that he had taken away the woman forcibly and made her sign papers for the purpose of marriage.

When the man’s counsel expressed apprehension over his safety, the judges said it will be for the SHO of Malviya Nagar police station to make an assessment for his protection and issue directions. The man claimed before the court that he married the woman and they both decided not to disclose this to their families. He said that in April when the woman disclosed about her marriage to her brother, he objected to it and threatened the man with dire consequences. On April 22, the man also told his parents about his marriage and they agreed to it.

While the man claimed that according to the Aadhaar card submitted at the time of marriage, the woman was born on January 1, 1998, she said she turned 18 on March 24 this year as she was born in 2000. The police had said that the man was known to the woman’s family and had also stayed at her brother’s house earlier for some years. They said that the woman had claimed that her signatures were forcibly taken by the man after she denied his marriage proposal.

While the man claimed that according to the Aadhaar card submitted at the time of marriage, the woman was born on January 1, 1998, she said she turned 18 on March 24 this year as she was born in 2000.

The DJ then rushed to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed Vijayadeep three times. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. The DJ was arrested on the spot. A case under various sections of murder was registered against the DJ at the Punjabi Bagh police station, and investigations were on, reports said.&nbsp;

The police also recovered fake Aadhaar cards and other identities by the same name. The police informed that Ahmed had got Rs 1.37 lakh by opening 15 saving accounts and fixed deposits of local people.&nbsp;

The police also took a huge collection of stationery - including forms, passbooks, three computers, laptop, furniture and other articles. &nbsp;

The police claimed he took applications from people for setting up a ‘franchise’ of the branch in a rural area. For the franchise, he used to demand Rs 60,000 from applicants, they said. It was this act of his that may have led to someone tipping off Karnataka Bank officials, reports said.

An 82-year-old man from central Kolkata was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl.

As per reports, the incident happened on Sunday when the accused, Altaf Hossain,&nbspraped the girl in his house.

Hossain has been charged under IPC sections pertaining to rape, molestation and threat along with Section 4 of the Pocso Act.

Reports say that the girl was playing near her relatives home when the accused lured her into his house.
