A US federal judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by chess player Hans Niemann, who was seeking $100 million from those who accused him of cheating, including former world champion Magnus Carlsen.

"We are pleased the Court has rejected Hans Niemann's attempt to recover an undeserved windfall in Missouri federal court," said Craig Reiser, Carlsen's attorney.

The 20-year-old American, hailed as a prodigy by those close to him, had filed a suit for libel in a Missouri state court in a case that shook the chess world and has gripped millions of Internet users.&nbsp;

It all started on September 5, 2022, when Niemann defeated Carlsen in the Sinquefield Cup, an annual chess tournament held in St. Louis, Missouri.&nbsp;

The 32-year-old Norwegian Carlsen, a five-time world champion, then withdrew from the tournament with a bang, accusing his opponent of cheating.&nbsp;

His claims were later echoed by international grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura and the world's leading online chess platform, chess.com, suggesting that Niemann had likely cheated at least 100 times online.&nbsp;

Niemann has admitted to cheating on chess.com when he was between 12 and 16 years old, but denies having continued and said he was ready "to strip naked" to prove his skill.&nbsp;

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) opened an investigation last September into the affair, described by many as one of the biggest scandals in the history of chess.&nbsp;

Since it broke out, Niemann has continued to play in tournaments, although he has lost some ground in international rankings.&nbsp;

Carlsen decided not to play in the last world chess championships in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, which saw the crowning of the Chinese grandmaster Ding Liren against the Russian Ian Nepomnyachi.&nbsp;

In what comes as a bizarre turn of events, a man dressed as a woman managed to cheat his way through a Chess Championship in the African country of Kenya. The man registered himself under the name Millicent Awuor, wore a 'niqab' and managed to take the mickey out of everyone at the tournament before getting caught.&nbsp;

The impostor managed to keep up his act and stormed through the first few rounds. According to the organisers, to keep his identity hidden, the player wore a niqab each day, which left his glasses and eyes visible only. Even during the registration process, he didn't utter a word and only scribbled on the paper during matches.&nbsp;

The tournament executives of the Kenya Open were apprehensive of the said participant but refused to intervene thinking she was an orthodox Muslim woman.&nbsp;

However, the lid was blown open after Awuor defeated former national champion Gloria Jumba and Ugandan top player Ampaira Shakira. Chief arbiter Antony Kionga stated that as the tournament progressed, both players and his staff noticed that the person in question seemed suspicious. The player had an odd walking style and wore shoes commonly used by men.&nbsp;

Afterwards, Kionga decided to take action and called the 'niqab-clad' woman to a private room and demanded an identification document. No sooner did Kionga ask for the documents, the impostor broke down and admitted to his wrongdoing.&nbsp;

The man, later identified as Stanley Omondi, said he was a university student, desperate for money and that's why he took to cheating.&nbsp;

"The reason was due to financial needs but I deeply regret my action and [am] ready to accept all consequences," he wrote in a letter.&nbsp;

Omondi had an international rating nearing 1500 and a blitz rating close to 1750. He has been booted out of the tournament while his points have&nbsp;been awarded to the opponents.&nbsp;

Teenaged Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh upset Magnus Carlsen in the ninth round of the preliminary phase of the Aimchess Rapid online chess tournament, becoming the youngest to beat the world champion.

The 16-year-old from Chennai beat the world No.1 with white pieces early on Monday to move up to third position behind Poland's Jan-Krzystof Duda (25 points) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan, 23 points) with 21 points after the 12th round.

Gukesh's 29-move dismantling of the world champion comes a day after his 19-year-old compatriot Arjun Erigaisi had posted a maiden win over the world champion.

"Gukesh just became the youngest player to ever beat Magnus after he became WC! Hats off to the 16-Year-Old Indian superstar," Meltwater Champions Chess Tour of which the Aimchess Rapid event is a part of, said on its Twitter feed.

Gukesh is 16 years 4 months 20 days while the previous record before his win was R Praggnanandhaa's 39-move victory over Carlsen in the Airthings Masters in February. Pragg was 16 years 6 months and 10 days old when he defeated the world No.1.

The Indian on his part, was quoted as saying after the momentous win: "Beating Magnus is always special, but I was not very proud of that game."

Gukesh suffered a setback in round 10 when he lost to Duda but bounced back superbly to beat Mamedyarova and Eric Hansen in the next two rounds.

Erigaisi has as many points (21) as Gukesh and is in fourth as the race for the spot in the knockout phase gets closer. 
The 19-year-old Erigaisi began the third day of the preliminaries with a loss to Mamedyarov before scoring over Hansen and talented German Vincent Keymer.

However, a defeat at the hands of fellow Indian GM Aditya Mittal in the 12th round spoiled what would have been a good day. Chess.com also said there were 'anomalies' in Niemann's growth as far as rankings were concerned. The American grandmaster has risen from being in the top 800 in the world to being in the top 50 in just a couple of years.

Meanwhile, FIDE - the world chess governing body has said it will set up a three-person panel to conduct an investigation into the cheating allegations made by Carlsen against Niemann.&nbsp;

“The focus of the investigation would be twofold: checking the world champion’s claims of alleged cheating by Niemann and Niemann’s self-statement regarding online cheating. The 19-year-old Niemann caused a major upset by beating Carlsen and the world champion decided to withdraw from the competition following the defeat. Since then, Carlsen has accused the American of cheating during the game – an accusation backed by a number of other grandmasters.

Carlsen caused a bigger controversy when he faced Niemann once again at the Julius Baer Generation Cup as the Norwegian left the game after playing just one move.

"So far I have only been able to speak with my actions, and those actions have stated clearly that I am not willing to play chess with Niemann," Carlsen said in his statement on Twitter.

Niemann has previously admitted to cheating in non-competitive games, but he completely denied the accusation that he cheated against Carlsen. However, Carlsen said that his demeanor was “unusual” during their match in St Louis and he “was not even fully concentrating on the game”.

"His over-the-board progress has been unusual, and throughout our game, in the Sinquefield Cup I had the impression that he wasn't tense or even fully concentrating on the game in critical positions while outplaying me as black in a way I think only a handful of players can do," he explained.

Young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa produced a superb performance, winning three straight games including two in the blitz tie-breaks to outwit world No.1 Magnus Carlsen 4-2 in the final round of the FTX Crypto Cup here on Monday.

However, despite the win over Carlsen, the 17-year-old could only take second place in the final standings. The Norwegian won the top prize on the basis of a higher score. He finished with 16 match points to the Indian prodigy's tally of 15.

"I've been playing badly all day, but now I'm getting the results I deserve... It's never good to lose, but this is as good a time as any!," Carlsen said after the match.

Alireza Firouzja, another highly-rated teen and a prodigy, also finished on 15 points but had to settle for third place as he had lost the clash against Praggnanandhaa earlier. The first two games of the Carlsen-Praggnanandhaa match were drawn before the world No.1 went ahead by clinching the third.

In a surprise turn of events, the Indian won the fourth game to push the match into the tie-breaks. He shocked the Norwegian by winning both the games in the tie-break. Praggnanandhaa has been in splendid form this year and had previously beaten the world champion twice in online events.

He also played a crucial role in the India 'B' team claiming a bronze medal in the 44th chess Olympiad in Chennai recently.

"I think it could have done better the last few days but I think overall 2nd is good," Praggnanandhaa said after the game against Carlsen.

Citing a lack of motivation, chess world number one Magnus Carlsen on Wednesday announced that he would not defend his world championship title in 2023, but stressed that he was not retiring from chess.

"I am not motivated to play another match... I simply feel that I don't have a lot to gain. I don't particularly like it," Carlsen said in the first episode of his podcast "The Magnus Effect".

Carlsen has repeatedly hinted that, bored with a title he has held for nearly 10 years, he may give up his throne without a fight. The 31-year-old crushed Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi 7.5-3.5 in his fifth straight victorious title match last December.

"Although I'm sure a match would be interesting for historical reasons and all of that, I don't have any inclination to play and I will simply not play the match," Carlsen told the podcast released Wednesday.

Carlsen said he had met with representatives from The International Chess Federation (FIDE) to inform them of his decision in Madrid in connection to the Candidates Tournament -- which decides who gets a chance to challenge the world champion.

"We had a small discussion. They had some suggestions, some of them I liked, some of them I did not, but ultimately the conclusion stands," he added.

Carlsen added that he had thought about the decision for over a year, "since long before the last match". "His decision not to defend his title is undoubtedly a disappointment for the fans, and bad news for the spectacle. It leaves a big void," FIDE President&nbsp;Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement commenting on Carlsen's announcement.

"But chess is now stronger than ever -- in part, thanks to Magnus -- and the World Championship Match, one of the longest and most respected traditions in the world of sports, will go on," Dvorkovich added.

With five wins and nine draws, Nepomniachtchi won the Candidates tournament, but with Carlsen bowing out, "Nepo" will face runner-up Ding Liren of China for the title. Carlsen first became world chess champion in 2013 when he defeated Indian grandmaster Viswanathan Anand.&nbsp;

A sixth successful title match would have brought Carlsen level with German Emanuel Lasker, the champion from 1894 to 1921, and Soviet Mikhail Botvinnik. Botvinnik held the title between 1948 and 1963, although during that time he twice lost and regained the title and his two successful defences came in drawn matches.

"Overall I feel like it's my time to go from the World Championship matches. I don't rule out a return in the future but I wouldn't particularly count on it," Carlsen said.

But Carlsen also stressed that he was not retiring from the sport.

"Just so there is no ambiguity here, I'm not retiring from chess, I'm still going to be an active player."

He would next be heading to Croatia to play in the Grand Chess Tour, and then to India's Chennai to represent Norway at the Chess Olympiad.

During the wee hours of Monday(Indian time), the young man from India had defeated World No.1 Magnus Carlsen and scaled a new high in his already celebrated career. With back-to-back tournaments and late-night online matches keeping him busy, the young Grandmaster from Chennai doesn't have the time to savour his big win, but he sure does enjoy the process. WION had an opportunity to speak to him and understand how he feels.

"I worked very hard for this event.. I also tried to manage&nbsp;my sleep schedule by staying awake till 3am, over the last 10 days, in order to prepare myself and adjust to the routine.(The online games as part of the Airthings Masters begin around 10pm India time and go on until 4am)… This is a very important tournament for me" he said.

Referring to having lost three of four matches on his first day, he said that he had played "not-so-good". However, that didn’t deter the lad from fighting with more vigour on day two, when had to take many top-ranked players. "Day 2 was when I faced World No.1 Magnus Carlsen… I was very excited to fight against the top players and tried to forget about the results of the first day.. I was very happy to win against the World Champion and it gives me huge confidence and a boost" he added.

Secretary of All India Chess Federation (AICF) Bharat Singh Chauhan is not surprised at 16-year-old R Praggnanandhaa's stunning world champion Magnus Carlsen in the eighth round of the ongoing Airthings Masters and says the young Indian player has been consistently performing well in various international events.

"I am not surprised at the way he is playing in various international events and the way he is performing. I expect more fireworks from these youngsters Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin, Gukesh, Erigaisi Arjun. All of them have done well. Praggnanandhaa has defeated Carlsen which is a wonderful feeling."

"He had a good game. He is seeded third from the bottom in the tournament in which he is playing. The mindset with which he is playing he is not concerned about who he is playing against and he is playing all the top players," Chauhan told ANI.

Praggnanandhaa toppled world champion Carlsen of Norway in 39 moves. The AICF Secretary said the young Indian player is "very dynamic and tactically well-versed".

"Praggnanandhaa puts his best in all the games 39 moves or 89 moves. He keeps fighting till the end. He is very well-versed with the theory and very dynamic. Good at tactics also, so I think it was a wonderful game," Chauhan said.

After beating the World Champion Praggnanandhaa came back with two more victories showing that his win was not a flash in the pan.

The 16-year-old registered victories against Andrey Esipenko and Alexandra Kosteniuk in rounds 10 and 12 of the Airthings Masters, an online rapid Chess competition.

Praggnanandhaa's win over Carlsen was a kind of sweet revenge as the Norwegian dethroned Indian legend Viswanathan Anand as World Chess Champion in 2013. So far only three Indians have managed to beat Carlsen.

Three losses and one draw in four games on the first day of a tournament, would've had a debilitating impact on any Chess player. But, 16-year-old Praggnanandhaa is an exception.

He came back stronger on day two and how! He pulled off this comeback while knowing fully well that on the second day, he would be up against experienced players, who also feature in the Top10 global rankings in the game.

In a way, this pressure of being up against the world's best was what fuelled the young man's drive to succeed. As the family cherishes their boy's win against World No1. Chess player Magnus Carlsen, WION/Zee Media spoke to Praggnanandhaa's sister Vaishali to know how it all unfolded.

Elder to him by four years, Vaishali was the first in the family to be initiated into formal training in Chess. In fact, this was a typical case of Indian parents trying out different methods to reduce the Television viewing time of their kids.

Then aged seven, Vaishali was enrolled in both drawing and chess classes. It was around this time that a three-year-old Praggnanandhaa started seeing the chessboard.

The pieces were his playthings and by the time he was aged four, the little one began to arrange the board and even play. Both kids began to play tournaments and the younger sibling went on to break records at a tender age.

Since then, there's been no looking back- R Praggnanandhaa is the fifth-youngest person to achieve the Grandmaster title and the second-youngest International Master, whereas his sister Vaishali is a Woman International Master and a Woman Grandmaster.

Online chess games were nothing more than fun contests for a player like Praggnanandhaa. However, the pandemic changed it all. Real-world tournaments that involved intense travel and hectic schedules were all reduced to online contests.

Thanks to the new normal, the young lad played a few online games against Carlsen. While this helped in understanding the World No.1 and his game a little bit, it was a recent tournament held in Netherlands that proved really helpful.

"Last month was his first-ever over-the-board game against Carlsen. Everytime he played Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa would be very excited and ready to take on the challenge" says his sister.

In order to prepare for the ongoing tournament, for which he'd have to be awake and razor-sharp focussed during wee hours(as per Indian time), the otherwise naughty and playful teenager had to alter his routine, at least ten days in advance. This meant, getting acclimatized to late nights and early morning hours.

"Over the last ten days, he's been preparing his mind for this online tournament. From staying wide awake in the late hours to waking up late in the day, he changed his routine to stay extremely focussed" Vaishali adds.

Imagine being up late in the night and having to focus on an extremely attention-intensive and strategic game, playing four games, each of which is an-hour-long and taking on the best in the world, that's been the last few days for the 11th grade student.

Pursuing a course in Commerce with Computer science, Praggnanandhaa the student is supported by his students and teachers, who go the extra mile to help him catch up with lessons, back at his school.

Reigning world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defended his title and won the FIDE World Championship on Friday in Dubai.

He beat Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, securing the one point he needed to cross the seven point threshold to win the global tournament held at Dubai's Expo 2020 this month in the United Arab Emirates.

After a surprise blunder by Nepomniachtchi, Carlsen clinched his fifth world championship title. Up until that point, the match was tense with games ending in draw after draw.

"Then everything kind of clicked. I think after that it all went my way, Carlsen told reporters from the world's fair after his win.

"You don't expect necessarily to run away with it in a world championship."

Carlsen wins 60% of the 2 million-euro prize offered by the championship.

Nepomniachtchi said he was struggling to understand exactly what went wrong and at the moment had no idea.

"The things that happened to me here never happened to me basically at any events ... In my career I lost quite some stupid games,&nbsp;Nepomniachtchi said grimly.

"I should find out why it happened."&nbsp;
