Bruce's Beach, in the desirable city of Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles county, was purchased by Willa and Charles Bruce with plans to build a resort for African-American people.&nbsp;

But the family faced strong opposition from the local community over their ownership of the land. The couple even received threats from the White Supremacist group Ku Klux Klan. When all coercive measures to wrest the land from Bruces didn't work, the government authorities moved in (1924) and invoked a law that enabled them to forcibly acquire the land under the pretext of building roads and public buildings.

The authorities maintained that a public park would be built on the land taken from the Bruce family. The park didn't come up till 1960s, nearly 40 years after the land was acquired forcibly.

"The seizure of Bruce's Beach nearly a century ago was an injustice inflicted upon not just Willa and Charles Bruce but generations of their descendants who almost certainly would have been millionaires," said Janice Hahn, chairwoman of the LA County Board of Supervisors. Hahn was quoted by the BBC

"This fight has always been about what is best for the Bruce family, and they feel what is best for them is selling this property back to the county for nearly $20m and finally rebuilding the generational wealth they were denied for nearly a century," she added.

In June last year, the county returned that land to the family. The city has agreed to keep leasing the land for USD 413,000 a year to continue operations of a county lifeguard training centre.

“As a mother, I know better and I am sorry. I am truly ashamed. I know this is the result of my own actions. I’m sorry to your entire family for putting you through this.”

“As someone who believes deeply in the empowerment of communities of color, I recognize my comments undercut that goal,” Martinez continued. “Going forward, reconciliation will be my priority. I have already reached out to many of my Black colleagues and other Black leaders to express my regret in order for us to heal.”

“And I didn’t step up to stop them and I will have to bear the burden of that cross moving forward,” he added.

SS Rajamouli’s 'RRR' rakes in ₹1.7 million from single screening in Los Angeles

The Weeknd announced a new date for his concert at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, keeping good on a promise to visit Los Angeles after being forced to postpone a performance earlier this month. 
 
According to Variety, the concert, which was unexpectedly cancelled on Sept. 3 in Los Angeles, has been rescheduled for Nov. 26, the Saturday following Thanksgiving. The newly added performance is scheduled for the evening of Sunday, Nov. 27. 
 
This coming Monday at 10 a.m. PT, tickets for the Nov. 27 performance go on sale here.No new tickets are being offered for that performance, at least not yet, as the concert on November 26 will replace the postponed appearance in September. The event on September 3 is no longer scheduled, thus tickets for that performance will automatically be changed to the new date. Given how many people travel to visit family around Thanksgiving weekend, a significant portion of those who held onto their tickets but couldn`t attend may be eligible for a refund up until October 27.

'Aquaman' star Jason Momoa was involved in a head-on crash on a highway in Los Angeles over the weekend. The 'Game Of Thrones' actor was reportedly driving along Old Topanga Road in Calabasas, California on Sunday morning when a motorcycle crossed the centre line and smashed head-on into his 1970 Oldsmobile. 
 
The motorcycle was being driven by a 21-year-old man who was immediately helped by the actor who got out of his car to check on him. Eventually, a passing driver called 911 and the motorcyclist took to a nearby hospital where was treated for non-life threatening injuries.&nbsp; 
 
According to reports, Momoa was not injured. California Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist hit the left front side of Momoa's car and was ejected from the motorcycle.

So far it is unclear as to why the motorcyclist crossed the central line. No charges of the crash have been pressed by either of the parties.&nbsp;

“We are ending oil drilling in Los Angeles. We are moving to all-electric new construction. And we are building toward fossil fuel-free transportation,” Paul Koretz, the LA council member who is working on the policy, was quoted as saying.

“Our great and influential city, which grew up around the automobile, is the perfect place to figure out how to move off the gas-powered car.”

Though there was no timeline provided as to when a draft ordinance or possible vote would be coming, officials said that Koretz is working to see the policy continue to advance by the end of 2022.

LA’s announcement came after a new report from SAFE Cities showed how gas stations pose numerous health, environmental, equity, and financial risks to communities.

Even small spills over time can significantly pollute soil and water and former gas stations make up a large portion of brownfield sites, the report states.

U.S. officials hope the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles and a parallel gathering of top business executives can pave the way for greater economic cooperation as regional nations grappling with higher inflation work to bring supply chains stretched by the COVID-19 pandemic closer to home.

"It's much better for us ... to have a supply chain here in the Americas than it is for us to be dependent on a supply chain that comes from China," U.S. ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar told Reuters on the sidelines of the summit.

Seeking to present alternatives to China, U.S. officials said Biden would unveil an "Americas Partnership" on Wednesday to speed pandemic recovery by building on existing trade deals.

The plan would aim to mobilize investments, reinvigorate the Inter-American Development Bank, create clean energy jobs, strengthen supply chains and promote "sustainable and inclusive trade" in the region, one administration official said.

Still, an initiative that promotes jobs abroad could face U.S. protectionist pushback, as well as questions about how many widely divergent economies could make it work.

Wandering the streets of LA and surrounding towns, Rob Greenfield wears a specially designed suit that can hold all the junk he has produced over the past few weeks.

His clear plastic suit has specially constructed pockets to carry all the rubbish from the drinks, snacks, and meals he consumed and weighs around 62 pounds or 28 kilograms.

Speaking to AFP, Greenfield said "We throw it in the garbage can and it goes away and we never think about it again. I wanted to create a visual that helps people to really see how much our trash adds up."
