As another candidate was eliminated to leave three contenders in the race to become the United Kingdom's new prime minister, former finance minister Rishi Sunak again topped the latest vote.

With longshot candidate Kemi Badenoch trailing on 59 and therefore eliminated from the contest, Sunak garnered 118 votes.

In the second place was former defence minister Penny Mordaunt on 92 followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 86.

The UK will either get its third female leader or its first British Asian prime minister as a result of the vote.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said that their government is mulling to replicate Canada and seizing the assets of Russians in the UK in order to give them to Ukraine.

The move comes hours ahead of Truss’s meeting on Monday in Lugano, Switzerland, which will be attended by most of Ukraine’s senior political leadership either in person or virtually. The conference will focus on Ukrainian reconstruction.

It has been estimated that over 120,000 homes in Ukraine have been destroyed in the war and the country will require billions in aid to help rebuild its infrastructure and economy.

According to The Guardian, Truss told MPs last week that the government could seize frozen Russian assets in the UK and redistribute them to victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

&nbsp;“I am supportive of the concept. We are looking at it very closely. The Canadians have in fact just passed legislation This is an issue that we are working on jointly with the Home Office and the Treasury, but I certainly agree with the concept. We just need to get the specifics of it right,” she was quoted as saying.

She said the initiative would “most probably” need legislation but not necessarily.

Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said on Friday that the bloc will provide an additional 500 million euro military aid to Ukraine.

Expressing confidence in an embargo on Russian oil, Borrell said the military support would be for heavy weapons such as tanks and artillery and take the bloc's aid to about 2 billion euros.

"A new impetus for military support. (It will be) more pressure on Russia with economic sanctions and continuing the international isolation of Russia and countering misinformation," he told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers meeting in northern Germany.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that the G7 will continue to support Ukraine “until victory” against Russia.

“We are not at war against Russia, it’s Russia who is at war against Ukraine. There is an aggressor and one being aggressed and we support the one being aggressed,” he added.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock slammed Russian attempts to split the world over Ukraine.

"Never since the end of the Cold War have we G7 partners been more profoundly challenged. Never before have we stood more united," she said in a tweet.

"There are 25 million tonnes of grain currently blocked in the Ukrainian port of Odesa, which means food for millions of people in the world that is urgently needed, above all in African countries and in the Middle East," Baerbock told reporters.

"That's why we're sending a clear signal today: we see you, we hear you and we support you," she said.

“Nato has messed up Europe. Is it now trying to mess up the Asia-Pacific and even the world?”

The United Kingdom, dwarfed economically and militarily by China, is the world's sixth-largest economy.

Defending China's stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Wenbin said “We have always made independent judgments based on the merits of the case.”

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has also asked China to persuade Russia to help end the war in Ukraine.

Russia on Saturday (April 16) announced a ban on the entry of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson along with some other top British officials.

These include UK Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, former Prime Minister Theresa May, and the First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon.&nbsp;

It comes after London had levied economic sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

In order to punish top Russian officials, and allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin the UK had also frozen their assets along with imposing a travel ban on them.

“In general, the democratic world must accept that Russia’s money for energy resources is in fact money for the destruction of democracy,” he said.

“The sooner the democratic world recognises that the oil embargo against Russia and the complete blockade of its banking sector are necessary steps towards peace, the sooner the war will end,” he added.

India's foreign minister S Jaishankar hit out at concerns being raised over India buying Russian oil, saying that “it’s like a campaign on this issue”.

Jaishankar was speaking at the first India-UK Strategic Futures Forum (IUSFF), which also saw the attendance of UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

Truss is on a two-day visit to India for a “wider diplomatic push” following Russia’s illegal invasion of&nbsp;Ukraine.

The event was organised by the Ministry of External Affairs’ think tank, Indian Council for World Affairs.

During the event, the minister pointed out that European countries remained the biggest buyers of oil and gas from Russia despite the sanctions.

He added that India’s own energy purchases were mostly from the Middle East and from the US.

“I was reading a report&nbsp;that in the month of March&nbsp;Europe has bought 15 per cent more oil and gas from Russia than it did the month before. If you look at the major buyers of oil and gas from Russia, you will find most of them in Europe,” Jaishankar said.

“We get the bulk of our energy supplies from the Middle East, 7.5 – 8 per cent from the US and it was less than a per cent from Russia earlier,” he added.

Defending India’s position, Jaishankar said, “When oil prices go up it is natural for countries to go out into the market and look for what are the good deals for their people. I am pretty sure if we wait two or three months, and actually look at who are the big buyers of Russian gas and oil, I suspect the list will not be very different from what it used to be, and I suspect we won’t be on the top 10 on that list.”&nbsp;

"Russia is now pursuing a strategy of attrition. This will involve the reckless and indiscriminate use of firepower. This will result in increased civilian casualties, destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure and intensify the humanitarian crisis," he added.

Truss said that Britain could potentially act as a guarantor if any settlement is reached, and that Putin "didn't believe" the international community would impose the scale of sanctions that it has.

Kommersant said Truss replied that Britain would never recognise them as Russian, and had to be corrected by her ambassador.
