In response to public outrage sparked by a previous law mandating the disposal of soldiers' reproductive material, Ukrainian legislators have approved amendments allowing for the utilisation of frozen sperm from deceased soldiers.

As casualties continue to rise among Ukrainian troops engaged in a protracted conflict with Russia, concerns over the nation's fertility policies have gained prominence.

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has endorsed a set of legislative changes aimed at facilitating the posthumous use of reproductive material from fallen soldiers.

Initially, a law passed in December dictated state-funded storage of soldiers' sperm and eggs starting in 2025. However, public outcry ensued following revelations that the law also mandated the disposal of samples from deceased donors.

<h2>Addressing backlash</h2>

In response to widespread criticism, lawmakers, in collaboration with the health ministry, pledged to amend the law prior to its enactment.

The recent amendments, supported by 264 MPs, not only authorise the use of soldiers' frozen reproductive material by their partners but also guarantee free storage for three years following the donor's demise, with the option for paid storage thereafter.

Proponents of the amendments argue that preserving soldiers' genetic material is imperative amidst ongoing military conflicts with Russia. They underscore the importance of safeguarding the Ukrainian gene pool amidst external aggression.

Medical legal experts contend that additional adjustments are required to fully implement the law. Currently, Ukrainian legislation does not recognise powers of attorney regarding reproductive material after the signatory's death, nor does it confer legal inheritance rights to children conceived posthumously.

The approved amendments call for revisions to the Civil Code and Family Code within three months to rectify these legal deficiencies.

Furthermore, the amendments advocate for soldiers to have the autonomy to determine the fate of their reproductive material in the event of their death. They also call for soldiers to be legally acknowledged as the parents of any offspring resulting from posthumous conception.

The discourse in Ukraine mirrors similar debates in other nations, such as Israel, where posthumous extraction of sperm from deceased soldiers is permissible. By aligning with international practices, Ukraine aims to address pressing ethical and legal issues surrounding reproductive rights in times of conflict.

What does 'normal' mean during the war? It has been more than 670 days since the Russia-Ukraine war started. On a wintry day, Russia invaded its neighbour on February 24, 2022. Since then, what transpired has been covered by media across the globe. It is not a new story anymore. A powerful country tries to correct the course of a smaller nation. The banality of evil is not lost on me when I write this. As a journalist, I report almost daily on the developments happening on the battlefield or the war of words between the respective leaders. It makes one wonder about the thousands of lives that have changed due to the ongoing war, which is now proving to be the bloodiest since the Vietnam War. Nataly says it has become a matter of choice. Nataly, a 29-year-old living in the capital city of Ukraine says it has become a matter of choice. She recalls that it was after a few days of uncertainty that one day, she woke up to a call from a friend saying the worst has finally happened. Russia had invaded Ukraine. She says, that although there were talks of invasion happening around, she always thought of it as a far-fetched idea, never really believing that it would happen. Life after the war started Nataly says, that in the first few weeks after the invasion, her life along with many others came to a standstill. Nobody worked, nobody knew what to do. For days, she couldn't sleep. The future seemed so clouded that she says planning life for even more than two hours did not seem feasible. Some of her friends immediately shifted to the western parts of Ukraine. According to the United Nations, over 5.1 million have been displaced internally in Ukraine while more than 6.2 million have been forced to seek refuge outside. But Nataly made a choice to not run away from the place she calls home. In the initial days of the war, she shared a flat with two of her friends. A month after the war, normalcy started setting in her life or rather she tried to bring some into her life. What's normal now? Her normal routine includes doing daily chores against the backdrop of war raid sirens and continuous shelling. Sometimes to avoid the nightly ordeal that Russian shelling brings along, some people choose to sleep at underground shelters instead of their homes, she says. It's dangerous living in the city, she says, adding that there is a price to pay to stay in her own home now. Other changes that have creeped up in her life include taking up medical courses to learn how to give first aid because you never know when you would need to save someone else or yourself. A lot of her friends have become volunteers who collect money and provide equipment to the frontier soldiers. She along with her family raised money to provide drones to the army as well. Living in the city or even travelling around is not safe. For people in other parts of the world, while a vacation might bring some respite, for Nataly, it wasn't the same. She went to Lviv for a few days where she was welcomed by drone strikes. Now as a part of their pre-departure ritual, people in Ukraine just don't check for cash or keys, but also look if the place they are travelling to has a bomb shelter or not. Crowd funding campaigns and making donations to army and charity foundations have become an integral part of people's lives in the war-torn country. Nataly says, if you're travelling to a village where shelters are not available, you just accept your fate and make a choice. Humans are adaptive, she says. It makes one think but where do we draw the line. Here is a person talking about getting used to paraphernalia that a war in her country has brought along with itself. Overwhelming is how she describes her days since the war clouds engulfed her skies, while mentioning in the same breath that she has been among the lucky ones. War has brought people closer home Nataly further says as days pass, life is becoming more uncertain, but she is glad to be around those she loves. She says, among the people she knows, most have shifted to speaking Ukrainian only. People even avoid using Russian casually like they used to, in the pre-war period. War has brought people closer home. It is being reflected in the art they create. Nataly says a lot of them are turning towards Ukrainian culture and their roots. Message for the world. Nataly says she is grateful to the world for the support Ukraine has received so far. She hopes it does not end as the country continues to remain at war. She would also want people to know more about the Ukrainian culture.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has come under heavy scrutiny after it was revealed that he bought a lavish mansion in Hamburg, Germany, worth almost $6 million, according to a report in Strana.ua, which cited the politician's official tax return. The publication noted that Klitschko received possession of the 750-square-metre mansion on December 20, 2023, from Maximum LLC, a US-based company, as a debt settlement. The company is owned by his brother Vladimir but the ownership was transferred to Klitschko in May 2023, with the mansion being used as a unique form of debt repayment. Klitschko, a former professional boxer, retired from the sport in 2013 and went on to become the mayor of Kyiv in 2014. The revelation of his luxury property comes in the aftermath of President Volodymyr Zelensky signing a bill in September last year, mandating electronic declarations for officials, which had been suspended after Russia’s military operation began in 2022. Watch | Russia-Ukraine war: Can Zelensky stop the Russian assault Klitschko's shoddy administrative work This is not the first instance when Klitschko has come under the scanner for his shoddy dealings at the time of war. In June last year, an audit ordered by President Volodymyr Zelensky found only 15 per cent of Kyiv's 4,655 bomb shelters suitable for protection. Meanwhile, only 44 per cent were freely accessible, forcing the authorities to serve a formal "notice of suspicion" to one of the senior Kyiv security officials under Klitschko. The former boxing champion's political future looked uncertain at the time, leading him to take evasive measures. Klitschko posted a video on Telegram and criticised investigations against him, concerning the shelters. He said the "endless searches" were making it hard for him to run the capital efficiently. "Today there is a heavy campaign to discredit the capital authorities and personally me. In wartime, they bring chaos to the management of the capital," said Klitschko, standing in front of the Ukrainian flag and a Kyiv landscape. Russia-Ukraine war: Missile attack rocks Kyiv, cyberattack leaves millions without internet

United States President Joe Biden and leaders of the G7 countries on Wednesday (Dec 6) virtually met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and agreed to restrict imports of Russian diamonds from 2024 in a show of support.

"We will introduce import restrictions on non-industrial diamonds, mined, processed, or produced in Russia, by January 1, 2024," the leaders said after a virtual meeting with Zelensky.

This will be "followed by further phased restrictions on the import of Russian diamonds processed in third countries targeting March 1, 2024," they said.

By the beginning of September, a "robust traceability-based verification and certification mechanism for rough diamonds within the G7" will be established, it added.

<h2>Zelensky calls for continued support for Ukraine</h2>

During the virtual meeting, Zelensky warned against the collapse of Western unity stating that Putin was expecting that to take place next year.

"Russia believes that America and Europe will show weakness and will not maintain support for Ukraine at the proper level. Putin believes that the free world will not fully enforce its own sanctions," he said, according to remarks posted to the president's website.

"The free world vitally needs to maintain its consolidation, maintain interaction, maintain support for those whose freedom is being attacked."

Earlier, the White House also warned that the US would run out of money for more Ukraine aid by the end of the year if Congress refuses to approve funds.

The G7 leaders addressed the issue of support for Kyiv in their statement, vowing that they would continue to back Ukraine.

"Our steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine's fight for its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity will never waver," they said.

On the Israel-Hamas conflict, the leaders said that "more effective action" was required to limit the displacement of&nbsp;civilians, and also echoed support for more pauses in the fighting allowing more aid.

"More urgent action is needed to address the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and minimize civilian casualties," they said.&nbsp;

G7 leaders agree to impose ban on Russian diamonds in show of solidarity with Ukraine

The White House officials on Monday (Dec 5) warned congressional leaders that halting the military aid to Kyiv would let Russian President Vladimir Putin "prevail" in Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"Congress has to decide whether to continue to support the fight for freedom in Ukraine as part of the 50-nation coalition that President (Joe) Biden has built or... ignore the lessons we've learned from history and let Putin prevail," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

"It is that simple. It is that stark a choice, and we hope that Congress on a bipartisan basis will make the right choice," he said.

US President Joe Biden's budget director, Shalanda Young, wrote a letter to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson stating that if military assistance runs out, it would "kneecap" Ukraine's battle against Russia's invasion.

In October, Biden had asked for a massive $106 billion national security package, including military assistance for Ukraine and Israel's war against Palestinian militant group Hamas.

However, the grant has been embroiled in divisions on Capitol Hill.&nbsp;

"There is no magical pot of funding available to meet this moment. We are out of money -- and nearly out of time," wrote Young.&nbsp;

"I want to be clear: without congressional action, by the end of the year we will run out of resources to procure more weapons and equipment for Ukraine," she added.
