Russia Says Foiled Ukrainian Plot To Kill High-Ranking Officials

Moscow, Russia
Russian authorities, on Wednesday (Dec 18), detained a Uzbek citizen for allegedly setting up a bomb that killed Russian general Igor Kirillov and one of his close aides. Kirillov, who was the head of Russia’s radiological, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb that was planted inside an electric scooter outside his apartment building. Russian state media Tass reported that the bomb contained the equivalent of 300g of high explosive.
He was accused by Kyiv of using banned chemical weapons on Ukrainian soil. Just a day prior to his death, Ukrainian prosecutors had sentenced Kirillov in absentia for alleged war crimes. The official complaint read that Kirillov was "using dangerous chemicals mainly in the hottest areas of combat, where they [Russia] are trying to hide the use of chemical agents under dense artillery fire".
The Russian Investigative Committee currently probing the death of the top general said the suspect was allegedly hired by Ukraine’s special services and was sent to Russia to carry out the assassination. “The detainee received a homemade explosive device and placed it on an electric scooter which he parked at the entrance to the residential building where Igor Kirillov lived,” said the committee on its Telegram channel.

It added that the suspect took a car and fitted it with a surveillance camera to monitor Kirillov’s movements. “The footage from this camera was broadcast online to the organizers of the terrorist attack in the city of Dnipro. After a video signal was received about the soldiers leaving the entrance, the explosive device was remotely activated by them,” the committee said, adding that “other persons involved in organizing this crime are being identified.”

Zelensky concedes Ukraine lost 43,000 soldiers in war against Russia in rare admission

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday he told US President-elect Donald Trump that Kyiv needed an "enduring" peace that Russia will not "destroy" in the future after they met in Paris for talks on the almost three-year war.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday he told US President-elect Donald Trump that Kyiv needed an "enduring" peace that Russia will not "destroy" in the future after they met in Paris for talks on the almost three-year war. Trump had earlier said Zelensky was keen for a "deal" and called for the start of negotiations. The pair met a day earlier with French leader Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace. Trump has boasted he could end the conflict swiftly without saying how, and both Moscow and Kyiv are readying for his arrival in the White House, with the dragging conflict seeing an escalation in deadly attacks in recent weeks. "I stated that we need a just and enduring peace—one that the Russians will not be able to destroy in a few years, as they have done repeatedly in the past," Zelensky said on social media. Almost three years of war have ravaged Ukraine, leaving thousands dead and millions fleeing the country. "Ukrainians want peace more than anyone else. Russia brought war to our land, and it is Russia that most seeks to disrupt the possibility of peace," he said. Watch | Russian Attack Kills 11 In Zaporizhzhia × He called on Western allies not to "turn a blind eye to occupation" and said Kyiv would only agree to a deal that would bring long-term peace. "War cannot be endless -- only peace must be permanent and reliable," he said. In a rare admission of numbers, Zelensky said 43,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed in combat, while some 370,000 were wounded. Both sides are believed to have suffered massive casualties, and that figure is believed to be far higher. 'Key conditions' discussed Zelensky gave no concrete details on key aspects of what negotiations could look like, but a senior Ukrainian official said they had discussed "some key conditions" for ending the war. "We are not disclosing details, but the presidents discussed at the meeting that there should be something that would guarantee the reliability of the peace," the source said. The Kremlin, meanwhile, accused Ukraine of "refusing" to negotiate an end to the war and said its conditions to enter peace talks -- which include Kyiv giving up four regions -- remain unchanged. "The Ukrainian side refused and is refusing negotiation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He referred to a 2022 Ukrainian decree that ruled out talks with Putin, but not other Russian officials. Trump had earlier called for an "immediate ceasefire" and called for talks to begin. "Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse," he wrote on his Truth Social platform. Trump has touted himself as having good relations with Putin. 'How long can we be at war?' But as leaders made statements in Kyiv, Moscow, and Paris, the situation on the ground in eastern Ukraine remained dire. Moscow claimed another village in the east -- Blagodatne in the Donetsk region -- on Sunday, pressing steady gains. Many in Ukraine have feared that Trump's taking office would force it to make heart-aching concessions to Russia, while the nation is also suffering exhaustion. In the village of Osynovo in the eastern Kharkiv region, news of the meeting between Trump and Zelensky offered some hope to one of the frontline village's last remaining residents, Mykola Lytvynov. Cleaning earth from vegetables in his backyard, the 80-year-old said he hoped the meeting could help bring about a negotiated end to the conflict. "How long can we be at war? So many people have been killed, so many young people. And you see the massive level of destruction," he told AFP. He suggested Ukraine could have retained more of its territory by already entering into talks with Russia, but said he hoped for an end to the fighting for another, personal reason. "Both my sons are fighting. I just want them to survive." Ukraine also said that two civilians were killed in the Donetsk region and that seven people were wounded by attacks in the southern Kherson region. Russian senate speaker expecting Ukraine peace talks next year: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Nov. 28) threatened to strike its new Oreshnik hypersonic missile at the “decision-making centres” in Ukraine's capital Kyiv.

Putin made the threat a week after using the experimental weapon for the first time in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.&nbsp;

"We do not rule out the use of Oreshnik against the military, military-industrial facilities or decision-making centres, including in Kyiv," Putin said during a press conference in the Kazakh capital Astana.

"Authorities in Kyiv today continue their attempts to strike at our vital facilities, including in Saint Petersburg and Moscow," he added.

He further announced Russia's plans to further increase the production of Oreshnik missiles, which Putin claims are impossible to intercept.&nbsp;

The intermediate-range ballistic missile can travel at a speed of Mach 10, or up to three kilometres per second.&nbsp;

Putin added that the weapon had the destructive power of a meteorite. "The kinetic impact is powerful, like a meteorite falling. We know in history what meteorites have fallen where, and what the consequences were. Sometimes it was enough for whole lakes to form."

<h2>'Minimal' damage caused by US-made missiles</h2>

Putin said that the damage caused by recent Ukrainian attacks in Russia using US-made ATACMS missiles was "minimal".&nbsp;

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Nov. 28) threatened to strike its new Oreshnik hypersonic missile at the “decision-making centres” in Ukraine's capital Kyiv. Putin made the threat a week after using the experimental weapon for the first time in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. "We do not rule out the use of Oreshnik against the military, military-industrial facilities or decision-making centres, including in Kyiv," Putin said during a press conference in the Kazakh capital Astana. Also read: 'Despicable escalation,' Russian strikes on Ukrainian power grid knock out power for 1 million "Authorities in Kyiv today continue their attempts to strike at our vital facilities, including in Saint Petersburg and Moscow," he added. He further announced Russia's plans to further increase the production of Oreshnik missiles, which Putin claims are impossible to intercept. The intermediate-range ballistic missile can travel at a speed of Mach 10, or up to three kilometres per second. Putin added that the weapon had the destructive power of a meteorite. "The kinetic impact is powerful, like a meteorite falling. We know in history what meteorites have fallen where, and what the consequences were. Sometimes it was enough for whole lakes to form." 'Minimal' damage caused by US-made missiles Putin said that the damage caused by recent Ukrainian attacks in Russia using US-made ATACMS missiles was "minimal". Storm Shadow missile is an Anglo-French cruise missile with a maximum range of around 155 miles (250 km). It carries a bunker-busting warhead and flies low and fast to evade air defences.

After launch, the weapon, equipped with its navigation system, descends to a low altitude to avoid detection before locking on to its target using an infra-red seeker.&nbsp;

On the final approach, it climbs to a higher altitude to maximise the chances of hitting the target.&nbsp;

Moreover, it travels at speeds of more than 600 mph, is just over five metres long, and has a wingspan of three metres.

Ukraine fires UK-made Storm Shadow missiles at Russia for the first time

Russia warned that the use of US long-range missiles by Ukraine would result in "an appropriate and tangible" response from Moscow.&nbsp;

In an official statement on Monday (Nov 18), Russia's foreign ministry said that an attack inside Russian territory using US missiles "would represent the direct involvement of the United States and its satellites in hostilities against Russia," BBC reported.&nbsp;

The Guardian reported that the decision to allow Ukraine to use US-made missiles to strike Russia was first reported on November 18 but has not been formally announced by the White House.&nbsp;

“It is clear that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to take steps to continue to add fuel to the fire and to inflame tensions around this conflict further," &nbsp;The Guardian reported Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, saying.&nbsp;

Peskov added, "This decision is reckless, dangerous, aimed at a qualitative change, a qualitative increase in the level of involvement of the United States.”

US President Joe Biden, who is currently in Rio de Janeiro for his final G20 Summit, is yet to comment on the decision.&nbsp;

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky had long pushed for the authorisation to use the 190-mile-range Army Tactical Missile System against Russia.&nbsp;

In September Putin clarified that the move to let Kyiv use longer-range weapons against Russia would mean Nato would be "directly at war with Moscow."

Other than warning of taking "appropriate" action based on the threats Moscow will face, Putin further said in June that Moscow could supply its long-range weapons to other countries to attack Western targets.&nbsp;

“If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a war zone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply our weapons,” Putin said in June, The Guardian reported.&nbsp;

The Guardian reported that the decision to allow Ukraine to use US-made missiles to strike Russia was first reported on November 18 but has not been formally announced by the White House. “It is clear that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to take steps to continue to add fuel to the fire and to inflame tensions around this conflict further," The Guardian reported Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, saying. Also read | G20 summit ends in Rio with no progress on climate Peskov added, "This decision is reckless, dangerous, aimed at a qualitative change, a qualitative increase in the level of involvement of the United States.” US President Joe Biden, who is currently in Rio de Janeiro for his final G20 Summit, is yet to comment on the decision. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky had long pushed for the authorisation to use the 190-mile-range Army Tactical Missile System against Russia. In September Putin clarified that the move to let Kyiv use longer-range weapons against Russia would mean Nato would be "directly at war with Moscow." Other than warning of taking "appropriate" action based on the threats Moscow will face, Putin further said in June that Moscow could supply its long-range weapons to other countries to attack Western targets. Also read | G20 leaders gather to address wars, climate and Trump’s return “If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a war zone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply our weapons,” Putin said in June, The Guardian reported. Russia-Ukraine War: Ukraine Fires American Missiles on Russia

United States President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for the director of national intelligence (DNI) has created fresh troubles for the government of&nbsp;President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine.

Former Democratic lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard’s name was confirmed for the role by Trump himself on Wednesday (Nov 13), prompting officials in Kyiv to remove previous bulletins and posts made by the Ukrainian government agency Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) accusing her of being a Russian asset.

A news website Ctrana.ua has reported that the Ukrainian government agency has deleted at least four of its posts from social media, with one from April 2022 describing Gabbard as someone who “for several years, has been working for foreign audience for the Kremlin money.”

In fact, one of the posts made by the CCD in 2022 can still be viewed on X, which accuses Tulsi Gabbard of taking “Kremlin money.”

Russia-Ukraine War: Ukraine Under Missile and Drone Attack as Blasts Shake Kyiv

Russia launched one of its largest drone salvos at Ukraine in recent months, targeting Kyiv and other cities and igniting a fire at an industrial facility in the western region of Ternopil, officials said on Wednesday (Oct 16).

Air defences shot down 68 of 136 drones used in the attack, the air force said in its readout. Two drones got back to Russia and 64 were unaccounted for, possibly after being intercepted by electronic warfare systems, it added.

Two drones hit unidentified targets, according to the report on the attack, which took place hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskiy unveiled his plan to fend off Russia's invasion.

Almost 50 firefighters put out a "large-scale fire" in the Ternopil region, the military administration wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

"There were no injuries," it said, declining to name the affected facility.

The air force said Russia also fired two missiles at the northern Chernihiv and eastern Donetsk regions, but did not say what happened to them. There was no immediate comment from Russia on its latest strike.

Police in neighbouring Moldova said that debris of what appeared to be a missile had been found to the country's north, about four&nbsp;km (2.5 miles) from its border with Ukraine's central Vinnytsia region. It was not immediately clear if it related to the latest or a previous attack.

The drone attack caused a fire at a private residence in the region outside the capital and damaged several other buildings, according to Governor Ruslan Kravchenko.

The region was under air alert for more than 12 hours because of the attack. Kravchenko said there were no casualties.

All the drones that targeted Kyiv overnight were destroyed and there were no reports of damage or injuries, Serhiy Popko, the city military administration's chief, said.

West allowing Kyiv to use long-range arms would put NATO at 'war with Russia': Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday (Aug 27), said that recently, his military carried out the first successful test of a domestically-produced ballistic missile, amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;

Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, the Ukrainian president's remarks come after two consecutive nights of large-scale Russian bombardments across Ukraine, killing several people and battering&nbsp;energy infrastructure.&nbsp;

"There has been a positive test of the first Ukrainian ballistic missile. I congratulate our defence industry on this. I can't share any more details about this missile," Zelensky said at the press conference.&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday (Aug 27), said that recently, his military carried out the first successful test of a domestically-produced ballistic missile, amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, the Ukrainian president's remarks come after two consecutive nights of large-scale Russian bombardments across Ukraine, killing several people and battering energy infrastructure. "There has been a positive test of the first Ukrainian ballistic missile. I congratulate our defence industry on this. I can't share any more details about this missile," Zelensky said at the press conference. For a long time now, Ukraine has been trying to develop its own arms industry and boosting military production on its own territory, to become less dependent on Western military aid amid its ongoing war with Russia. Ukraine test-fired first domestically-produced ballistic missile: President Zelensky

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (Aug 23) presented Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with four BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita &amp; Maitri) Cubes during a one-day visit to the war-torn nation, hailed as historic by observers. The cubes are designed to help expedite treatment for injured and are expected to help Ukrainians as they battle out Russian forces.

<h2>What are BHISHM cubes?</h2>

The BHISHM stands for Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita &amp; Maitri, which roughly translates to India’s spirit of cooperation and friendship.

The BHISHM cubes are compact, portable and intended to provide first-line care in emergencies. These can prove to be critical assets in times of war-related situations and medical emergencies, especially in Ukraine which witnesses fatal attacks from Russia almost every day.

The cubes are equipped with modern medical equipment, essential medicines and health materials. All supplies required to treat injuries such as trauma, bleeding, burns, and fractures are stocked in abundance, making them a preferred destination for wounded troopers on the front lines.

Thanks to these facilities, one BHISHM cube can accommodate 10-15 surgeries per day, helping doctors conduct right from minor operations to more complex surgeries. One such cube can handle more than 200 cases every day, especially in remote areas where medical facilities are not available readily.

These cubes are designed to function even when the external power source is not available as they have the ability to generate power as well. In extreme cases, these cubes can also be used to generate limited oxygen for medical use.

To help Ukraine&nbsp;use these cubes effectively, India has deployed a team of experts to the war-torn nation. The team will impart necessary training to Ukrainian personnel, helping them save the lives of injured soldiers and medics.

India’s Ministry for External Affairs (MEA) in a statement said the move to provide Ukraine with four BHISHM cubes “underscores India’s continued commitment to provide humanitarian assistance.”

What are BHISHM cubes, gifted by PM Modi to Ukraine during historic Kyiv visit?

Ukraine's parliament voted on Wednesday to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), as Kyiv seeks to bring Russia to justice over war crimes it is alleged to have committed throughout its invasion.

The ICC prosecutes grave offences like genocide and crimes against humanity and has the power to issue arrest warrants that its 124 members are obliged to execute.

Ukraine signed the Rome Statute that founded the court in 2000 but had not ratified it, as some political and military figures expressed fears Ukrainian soldiers could face prosecution.

Ukraine's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, called Wednesday's move "historic" after parliament adopted the ratification of the statute.

"This has been a long journey full of challenges, myths, and fears. None of them have been true. And today, we are finally there," he said in a post on X.

The ratification controversially included a reference to Article 124 of the Rome Statute, which would exempt Ukrainian citizens from being prosecuted for war crimes for seven years, ruling party lawmaker Yevgeniya Kravchuk said on Facebook.

"The ratification of the Rome Statute will simultaneously facilitate greater opportunities for punishing Russians and increase the isolation of Russia," she said.

Last year, the court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his children's ombudsman, Maria Lvova-Belova, over the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia and Russian-controlled territory.

Kyiv had long faced pressure from rights groups to ratify the treaty as well as from the European Union, which Ukraine has sought to join.

Ukraine parliament votes in favour of joining International Criminal Court

Russian forces said Tuesday they had captured the key hub of New York in eastern Ukraine, as Moscow -- under pressure by a Kyiv counterattack on its territory -- presses on with its offensive.

The defence ministry said its troops had captured "one of the largest settlements of the Toretsk agglomeration and the strategically important logistics hub (of) Novgorodskoye", referring to the town in Ukraine's Donetsk region by its former name.

The capture of the town, which had a population of around 10,000 before Moscow launched its offensive, is the latest in a string of Russian advances in the region.

On Monday, Russia said it had captured the town of Zalizne, close to New York.

Donetsk was one of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claimed to have annexed in 2022, despite not having full control over any of them.

The region has seen the most intense combat of the two-and-a-half-year conflict.

Kyiv has struggled to hold the front line there, facing manpower and ammunition shortages after months of attritional fighting.

Ukraine launched a border incursion into Russia's western Kursk region two weeks ago, a move it hoped could relieve pressure in other parts of the battlefield.

But the Russian advance in Donetsk has continued.

New York first found itself on the front line in 2014, when Moscow-backed separatists in the east tried to breakaway from Kyiv, triggering an armed conflict.

The origin of the town's name is a mystery, with theories including possible American connections among its founders.

It was renamed "Novgorodskoye" -- New City -- by Soviet authorities in 1951 for ideological reasons, before Ukrainian lawmakers voted to switch it back to New York in 2021.
