IPL 2019: What to expect when Ashwin-led Punjab take on Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi at IS Bindra Stadium?

IPL 2019, Punjab vs Mumbai: Key players to watch out for

"I couldn't help but doubt myself, doubt my own character," said Indian cricketer KL Rahul as he reflected on the storm triggered by his and Hardik Pandya's sexist comments on a TV show.&nbsp;

Rahul and India teammate Pandya were provisionally suspended by the BCCI for their loose talk on women on the show. The Committee of Administrators (COA) handed the inquiry into the matter to the Supreme Court-appointed BCCI Ombudsman and a decision is still awaited.

Weeks away from his 27th birthday, Rahul spoke about what he endured after he was sent back before the ODI series in Australia.&nbsp;

"...It was hard as I am not used to people disliking me. For the first one week or 10 days, I couldn't help but doubt myself, doubt my own character. The hardest thing was to know whether actually, you are a bad person when so much has been written about you," Rahul said.

It was a time when Rahul briefly cut himself off socially as he was "scared to face" uncomfortable questions from outsiders.

"I was quite honestly scared to step out as I wasn't ready. If somebody would ask questions, I didn't know what I would answer. I would go for practice, come back home and be on my PlayStation as I wasn't simply ready to face people," the eloquent batsman said.

Rahul admitted that the glamour and razzmatazz that surrounds the Indian team has briefly left him disconnected with his roots and his well-wishers.

"When you start playing for the country, you are so distracted, you are always on the move, forget who your true friends are or how important family is. I have been on the road for a long time and I haven't had a break.

"So, you kind of have a disconnect with family or friends. You kind of drift away, don't make time for friends," he said.

One of the three Indian players, who has an international hundred across all formats, said there was a point he felt that those who are physically there with him are his real friends.&nbsp;

"You share a lot with them but you forget that there are people back home, who have seen your struggles, seen you when you were nothing. They have helped you because they liked the real you. You rediscover your relationships with a lot of people," he said.

However, he was thankful to the Indian team members and the support staff, who were there during his trying times.&nbsp;

"Even when I had to leave Australia and go back home, there were a lot of people who came up to me and put an arm around the shoulder and said 'It's okay, we have all been there and we have all made mistakes, and we have all had to face punishments in whatever way'."

The senior members of the Indian team had one advice for him: "Try to keep aside the hatred that you are receiving from social media and don't doubt yourself."&nbsp;

"So much has been said by people, that you start questioning yourself. But then family, friends, teammates, checked up on me as to what I was going through."

I started doubting my character, wasn't ready to face people: KL Rahul on 'Koffee with Karan' controversy

The "hard time" that he endured in the wake of a chat show controversy has "humbled" <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=KL+Rahul">KL Rahul</a> and the Indian batsman says he now values his national cap more than ever.&nbsp;

Both Rahul and Hardik Pandya were provisionally suspended for their loose comments on women during a popular chat show. Their bans were later revoked pending an inquiry.&nbsp;

The <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/provisional-suspensions-on-hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-revoked-by-coa-192520">off-field controversy erupted</a> after Rahul endured a dismal run in the four-Test series in Australia but he is back in the national team after finding his feet with the India A side.&nbsp;

"It was a hard time no doubt. I mean, as a player, as a person, everyone has to go through difficult times and it was my time to go through that and I like I said it gave me time to reflect on my game, on myself. I have always been someone who takes things as it comes," said Rahul after the second T20 International.&nbsp;

India lost the short series 0-2 but Rahul made a successful comeback with scores of 47 and 50. After he was sent back from Australia, Rahul was given the opportunity to regain form in the India A home series against England Lions and he made it count.&nbsp;

Asked if the entire controversy has changed him as a person, the 26-year-old said, "It has humbled me a little bit and you know. I respect the opportunity that I have gotten to play for the country. The dream of every kid is to play for the country and I am no different.&nbsp;

"Just to value where I am, just to keep making opportunities count and put my head down and keep working on my cricket," said the man from Karnataka.&nbsp;

Rahul said India A stint under coach Rahul Dravid helped him immensely.&nbsp;

"I got some time off from international cricket, so I could come back to India and reflect on what was not going right for me. Fortunately, I got to play some India A games where the pressure is a bit less and where I could focus on my skill and my technique," said Rahul.&nbsp;

"I got to spend a lot of time with Rahul Dravid, working on my game and chatting about cricket. He helped a lot in the five games I played for India A. The time I have spent in the middle has helped. It is nice to be back with the boys and back in blue," the relief was palpable as he spoke.&nbsp;

Rahul hopes that it is a blessing in disguise that he courted controversy early in his international career.&nbsp;

"I hope so. Things happen like I said. Four-five years with Team India. Learnt about the game, where I stand as a cricketer, as a person so just try to get better from there and be consistent and keep performing."&nbsp;

Rahul admitted that he felt the pressure after making a comeback into the Indian team.&nbsp;

"There was little bit of pressure as I have been away from team. But I came into the series with a little bit of runs, so yeah happy to be back."&nbsp;

India were not able to defend 190 for four on Wednesday and ended up being outplayed in the series. Local hero Rahul said chasing at Chinnaswamy in the night becomes easier with dew factor playing out.&nbsp;

"In the second innings, dew always has an effect. We have seen that in Chinnaswamy. If you see the stadium's history, chasing has been easier. But can't take credit from Glenn Maxwell.&nbsp;

"He (Maxwell) played a very good innings. Our bowlers tried their best but with a wet ball, it was always hard," said Rahul, adding that India will have to find a way to contain Maxwell in the five-match ODI series starting on March 2.&nbsp;

Off-field controversy has humbled me: KL Rahul

India captain Virat Kohli wasn't perturbed by his team's shoddy batting performance in the first T20 International as he is looking to give more chances to youngsters KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant looking ahead at the World Cup in England.&nbsp;

Rahul made an impressive half-century on his comeback but Pant was needlessly run-out during India's three-wicket defeat against Australia in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/1st-t20i-australia-beat-india-by-three-wickets-in-last-ball-thriller-lead-series-1-0-199415">first T20 International</a>.

Chasing a target of 127, Australia were cruising along before Jasprit Bumrah's (3/16 in 4 overs) brilliant 19th over nearly won the game for India.

"We want to give Rahul and Rishab more game-time. Rahul played a really good knock and we had a good partnership. Had we gone on, we could have got 150, which would have been a match-winning score on this pitch. But Australia played better cricket overall and deserved to win," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

However, he didn't forget to praise his bowlers for making a match of a low target like 127.

"Very pleased with the bowling effort. Never thought we would be in this situation but Bumrah can do wonders when the ball is reversing. Even Mayank (Markande) bowled brilliantly (17th over), I thought," said Kohli.

Winning captain Aaron Finch also conceded that facing Bumrah in the death overs is not an easy proposition.&nbsp;

"When Bumrah has got overs up his sleeve, it's never easy. But the run-outs didn't help either. Maxwell played a hell of an innings on a difficult pitch," Finch lauded the senior batsman.

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was impressed by Hardik Pandya's contribution in the third One-Day International against New Zealand. He said that Pandya's presence covers all bases for the side.&nbsp;

"He was very, very impressive. You know why this team management wants him in the side. He actually fills that little blank that was there. This allows the team to be balanced. He covers all the bases for the team," Gavaskar told Star Sports.&nbsp;

Hardik Pandya's presence ensures all bases are covered: Sunil Gavaskar

Provisional suspensions on Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been lifted with immediate effect pending the appointment and adjudication of allegations by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ombudsman.&nbsp;

Earlier, BCCI&nbsp;had&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">suspended&nbsp;all-rounder Pandya and batsman Rahul</a> from all formats of cricket over&nbsp;sexist comments&nbsp;made on a TV show.&nbsp;

Both the players were criticised and faced a major backlash on social forums for their misogynist comments. The players were ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Australia.&nbsp;

Now the Committee of Administrators (CoA), after consulting new amicus curiae PS Narsimha, decided to lift the suspension pending an inquiry, for which an ombudsman is to be appointed by the Supreme Court.

The apex court has listed the matter tentatively for February 5.&nbsp;

"The above matter and decision has been taken with the concurrence of the Learned Amicus Curiae, Mr&nbsp;PS&nbsp;Narasimha. In view of the above, the suspension orders dated 11.01.2019 is immediately lifted pending appointment and adjudication of the allegations by the BCCI Ombudsman," read a statement of CoA, issued by the BCCI.&nbsp;

Pandya is now expected to join the team in New Zealand while Rahul might play in either domestic circuit or show up for India A in an ongoing home series against England Lions.&nbsp;

While Diana Edulji wanted the BCCI office-bearers to be involved in deciding the fate of the two cricketers, CoA chief Vinod Rai had dismissed the suggestion as it would have been in violation of the Board constitution.&nbsp;

The CoA said the decision to suspend the two players was taken under "Rule 46 of the approved BCCI Constitution", which covers players' conduct that can bring the Board into disrepute.&nbsp;

The idea of letting the players get on with the game was first mooted by BCCI acting president CK Khanna, who wanted the suspensions to be lifted pending inquiry.&nbsp;

Provisional suspensions on Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul revoked by CoA; probe pending

When the outspoken Sreesanth says Karan Johar should also take the blame for the disastrous aftermath of Hardik Pandya's declarations on Koffee With Karan he is not off the mark.

Fact is, the channel is "extremely concerned" about its image after Pandya's misogyny was outed. And if sources are to be believed, axing the show has also been contemplated. But we now hear there would be no such grave ramifications, only an apology on the show for the careless and insensitive man-talk.

But a more far-reaching repercussion awaits the show as the guests would have to watch their mouth. And if they shoot it off nevertheless, Karan Johar would have to ensure the smut sleaze and innuendos are kept out of range.

Fact is, the show's underlining mood of sexiness was simmering to a boil for some time now. Both the men and the women celebrities were being asked what would be termed as improper questions and it was considered okay since, "Karan is like that only," as one of his indulgent female star guests told me.

Crossing the line comes naturally on "Koffee With Karan". It comes with the territory. The show is an extension of Karan Johar's personality. Everyone loves Karan, even if he is a little leery. No one minds if he asks what would be considered improper in other circumstances. He is a part of the super-privileged elite of Bollywood who have access to everyone who counts. And that makes him more powerful than almost anyone else in Bollywood.

Karan's own love life is zilch. But he is a love guru to many of the biggest actors and actresses. Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor are some of the stars who lean on Karan for heart-related advice. Karan has solved more love tangles than Mike Myers in Love Guru.

I once asked him about his status as Bollywood's resident love consultant and said, "I don't have a love life of my own. So I invest all my unused energy in others' love life."

This was long before the twin towers of his existence. His children, Roohi and Yash, have given him a reason to come home quickly after work. And Karan, who made sure he makes his presence felt at every happening-do in Mumbai, is no longer that wild a party animal. He would rather have dudhoo with his babies than Koffee with the stars.&nbsp;

If for no other reason, he should now curb his naughty instincts for the sake of his children. Would Karan like his son Yash on the sofa one day talking the way Hardik was heard talking?

Maybe he would. But then the normal lines of decorum are not sketched for Karan. This unsavoury incident has taught him not to look for a mischievous pun in the name 'Hardik'.

It's time to stop playing the field.

Karan Johar is as much to blame for Hardik Pandya-KL Rahul controversy

BCCI acting President CK Khanna Saturday urged the Committee of Administrators (CoA) to lift the suspension on Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul for their much-criticised sexist remarks and refused to convene a Special General Meeting on the matter.

Khanna said calling the SGM to appoint an ombudsman to investigate the two players' conduct, as demanded by Board officials, wouldn't be right as the Supreme Court is due to take up the issue next week.

Pandya and Rahul have been suspended pending an inquiry for their sexist comments on a TV chat show.

"They made a mistake, and they have already been suspended and called back from the series against Australia. They have also submitted an unconditional apology,"

Khanna write in a letter to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the BCCI.

"I suggest that pending inquiry we reinstate both the cricketers into the Indian squad immediately and allow them to join the team in New Zealand at the earliest," he added.

The CoA wants the Supreme Court to appoint an ombudsman to decide the fate of the two players, who have already missed the ODI series against Australia and are set to sit out of the tour of New Zealand as well.&nbsp;

They have also been thoroughly lambasted for their comments on hooking up with multiple women and joking about it on the show.

Around 14 state units, mainly former BCCI president N Srinivasan's loalists, had requested Khanna to convene an emergent SGM, which needs to be called in 10 days.

BCCI Treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry also wrote to Khanna requesting for an early SGM, so that board members can take a call on the appointment of ombudsman.

"As per constitution of the BCCI, an ombudsman can be appointed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). And moreover the matter (appointment of ombudsman) is already sub-judice," Khanna replied to Chaudhry.

Khanna also sought BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary's view.

"Why would Khanna or Amitabh sign the notice for convening Special General Meeting when the matter is in Supreme Court. There would be a risk of Contempt of Court," a senior BCCI official privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

However, the official agreed that CoA chief Vinod Rai should have vetoed co-member Diana Edulji's demand for provisional suspension and taken a call on quantum of suspension for the two suspended cricketers.

"As per protocol, Mr Rai sought Diana's suggestion but he could easily overrule her view of getting a legal opinion, which started this mess. He (Rai) could have easily done what he did in the women's coach selection case," the official observed.

The acting president urged the CoA and BCCI office-bearers to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

"What Mr. Hardik Pandya said and Mr. K.L. Rahul acted as a by-stander to is inappropriate and absolutely wrong, but in my personal opinion, to treat them like lawbreakers is wrong too," he wrote.

"Both these cricketers need game time before the World Cup which starts in four months time. We should give these growing cricketers chance to correct themselves morally," he signed off.&nbsp;

Let Pandya, Rahul play while inquiry is on: BCCI president urges CoA

The Supreme Court Thursday took note of a plea of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) seeking urgent appointment of an ombudsman in the BCCI to decide on the fate of Team India members Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, who have been <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">suspended pending inquiry</a> over their "insensitive" remarks against women.&nbsp;

A bench comprising justices SA Bobde and AM Sapre said it will hear the matter after a week when senior advocate PS Narsimha takes over charge as amicus curiae in the matter.

The top court-appointed Narsimha as amicus after senior advocate Gopal Subramanium withdrew his consent from being an amicus curiae in the matter.&nbsp;

Senior advocate Parag Tripathi, appearing for the CoA, said that the court should direct appointment of ombudsman in the BCCI urgently as the fate of two young promising cricketers needs to be decided immediately.&nbsp;

CoA asks SC to appoint ombudsman to decide fate of Pandya, Rahul

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly Thursday said "we should move on" from the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">controversy surrounding Hardik Pandya</a> and KL Rahul's sexist comments because he is sure the two will learn from it and become better persons.&nbsp;

Speaking at an event here, Ganguly said he hasn't seen the 'Koffee with Karan' episode in which Pandya and Rahul's misogynistic comments on women led to a provisional suspension on them. But he offered a sympathetic view on the under-fire duo.&nbsp;

"People make mistakes, let's not go too far here. I am sure, whoever has done it will realise and come out a better person. We are human beings not machines that we will always be perfect. We should move on and make sure it doesn't happen again," Ganguly said on the raging controversy.&nbsp;

Pandya and Rahul were forced to return midway through the ongoing ODI series against Australia and India captain Virat Kohli condemned their statements on hookups with multiple women as "inappropriate".&nbsp;

They have been show caused twice by the BCCI since then and are also being put through an inquiry.

Ganguly said most cricketers are "great guys".

"...They (cricketers) are humble, every now and then one or two make mistakes but I know most of them personally and they are great guys," Ganguly said during the trailer launch of '22 Yards' at a suburb.&nbsp;

Pandya and Rahul, pending the outcome of the inquiry, will not be a part of the Indian team. After missing the ongoing ODI series, they are set to miss the upcoming New Zealand Tour as well.&nbsp;

Ganguly, who has been credited with shaping Indian cricket during his captaincy stint, said it's not that modern-day cricketers are not obedient.&nbsp;

"Look at Virat Kohli, he is such a fantastic role model. India is a fortunate country, every generation produces players who all of us cherish, there was (Sunil) Gavaskar, then came (Sachin) Tendulkar, when Tendulkar finished people thought who's next, now it's Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

"A lot of these cricketers are fantastic human beings because they come from middle-class backgrounds and fight their way up. Can you imagine 11 selected out of the millions play the game."

Hardik has not left the house, not taking any calls: Father

Appealing that another chance be given to Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, who have drawn flak for their outrage-evoking comments on women during a chat show, renowned umpire Simon Taufel Monday said&nbsp;that "we all make mistakes".&nbsp;

Pandya, 25, and Rahul, 26, have been <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-out-from-1st-odi-amid-recommendation-of-suspension-189599">suspended by the BCCI</a> and sent home from the tour of Australia following their sexist remarks in popular celebrity talk show 'Koffee with Karan', which is hosted by Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar.

"Look what I would say in every team and in every business and every sport, is that good people make a good team. And that we all make mistakes from time to time. We all learn as we go," Taufel, 47, told reporters on the sidelines of a local cricket tournament where he was the chief guest.

"Although I didn't see the show, I have read little bit about some of the complaints. I have made plenty of mistakes in my career and I have learnt along the way.

In the show, they spoke about hookups with multiple women and being casual about it even with their parents.

"These players may have made some mistakes with some of the things that they have said. But they too will learn and all the other players and all the other people that have seen this event will also learn," he said.

Taufel added that they have their careers lying ahead and remained hopeful they will come out of the incident as better persons.

"I think we really need to be careful about being overly critical. People do make mistakes but if we learn from that and we are genuine about wanting to do better, and commit to doing better then that's a good thing.

"These players have got their careers to get through like you make a mistake in the first ball but you still got the day to get through. And I am sure they have got some good people around them and some good advice.

"I am sure they will come out of this okay and they will get through it. If they are genuine and they learn from that, I think they will become better as a result."

Taufel, who recently gave a keynote lecture at the Institute of Technology Bombay's (IIT-B) Techfest in Mumbai, stressed on the importance of education.

"It's important that we invest in training and we invest in education. Because it is about the person as much as it is about the player. And it's a real challenge in modern sport where players are thrust into environments and opportunities that they have never seen before.

"And the amount the scrutiny that cricketers and umpires are on to these days, its huge.

"My work going forward with a lot of businesses and lot of sporting organisations and a lot of people is about how do we prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead."

Taufel lavished praise on Virat Kohli, singling out an innings in the 2012 CB series against Sri Lanka in Hobart, where the Indian captain made an unbeaten 133.

"Every shot in the innings was in the middle of the bat. He was almost faultless," Taufel said.

Taufel added that Kohli has now found out how to bring the best out of him and he is comfortable in being who he is.

"Virat's now finding or has found what it takes to be a good leader. He grew up idolising Sachin Tendulkar and under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

"They have had a huge impact on his career. But Virat Kohli is his own man. He has found out what it takes to be the best Virat Kohli he can be," he concluded.

Give Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul another chance, appeals umpire Simon Taufel

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-out-from-1st-odi-amid-recommendation-of-suspension-189599">Suspended cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul</a> Monday tendered "unconditional" apologies for their sexist comments during a TV chat show amid CoA chief Vinod Rai saying that the BCCI should correct the two players, not end their careers.&nbsp; &nbsp;

However, despite the apologies tendered by the duo, 10 BCCI units demanded a Special General Meeting to appoint an ombudsman for carrying out an inquiry. Rai's fellow Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji wants an inquiry done by CoA and the BCCI office-bearers.

Brought back midway from the tour of Australia, Pandya and Rahul's immediate fate hangs in balance with the World Cup less than four months away.

Rai, in an e-mail to Edulji, said that the "BCCI is not in the business of ending young careers".

"Please be assured that the desire to conduct the inquiry is not a desire to 'cover up'. The interest of cricket in India has to be kept in mind. The off the ground act of the players was deplorable. It was crass as I said immediately after reading the comments," Rai wrote.&nbsp;

"It is our responsibility to reprimand them, take corrective action, sensitise them of their misdemeanour and then get them back on to the ground once they have suffered the consequences," he said.

The former CAG stated in his mail that players have been "shamed" after being recalled from an international tour, the ongoing ODI series against Australia, and principles of natural justice demand that they be heard.

"We have shamed them by recalling them from an ongoing tour. We have suspended them from further games. We need to correct them and not bring their career to a cul de sac by indefinitely delaying a decision. These misdemeanours require swift action, with a corrective approach," he added.&nbsp;

The road to redemption for the duo could prove to be tricky. Rai has instructed BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to carry out a preliminary inquiry but Board members along with Edulji want otherwise.

Rai justified Johri intitiating the probe, citing the BCCI constitution. Edulji feels Johri, because of past allegations of sexual harassment against him, should not be entrusted with the task.&nbsp;

"The CEO must fulfil his duty as per Rule 41(C) and conduct the inquiry after receiving the explanation of the players. He must ensure that the norms of natural justice are fulfilled," Raid said.&nbsp;

The e-mail also states that a request has been made to the Supreme Court to appoint an Ombudsman for the case, on the advice of the legal team.

"During the 17th (January) hearing, we request the hon Court to appoint an Ombudsman. However, in the unlikely event of the Hon. Court not being able to appoint the Ombudsman in the hearing scheduled for the 17th January 2019, we must go ahead and appoint an ad-hoc ombudsman as per legal advice received by us.&nbsp;

"The Ombudsman, so appointed, can take a final view on the players based on the inquiry report submitted by the CEO," he wrote.
In another development, acting president CK Khanna received requisitions from 10 state units demanding a Special General Meeting at the earliest.

As per the new constitution, the secretary -- in this case the acting secretary -- can call an SGM on 21 days' notice but if it has to be an Emergent SGM within 10 days, the board president (acting president) in this case has to convene the meeting.

"It will be interesting what call Khanna will take. If I remember, he once didn't sign the minutes of SGM fearing that it would be in violation of Supreme

Court orders. On another occasion, he didn't even attend an SGM," a state unit member, who was present during both the meetings, said.

"There is a possibility that Khanna may instruct Amitabh Chaudhary to call a normal SGM with 21 days' notice which a secretary is allowed to," he added.&nbsp;

India call up Vijay Shankar, Shubman Gill to replace suspended Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul

CoA chief Vinod Rai has proposed a quick enquiry into the much-criticised comments made by suspended cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul but Diana Edulji fears it will be construed as a "cover up" job.&nbsp;

The two-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) is yet again divided; this time on how the inquiry into the latest controversy should be conducted.&nbsp;

Pandya and Rahul, who attracted widespread criticism for their misogynistic comments on the TV Show 'Koffee with Karan', <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/suspended-pandya-rahul-to-be-sent-home-kohli-condemns-comments-189693">will be back in India</a> by Saturday or early Sunday.

In another round of unfriendly email exchanges (which are in PTI's possession), CoA member Edulji has expressed her reservations about BCCI CEO Rahul Johri — who was himself embroiled in a&nbsp;sexual harassment case — conducting a preliminary inquiry, and fears a "cover up".

Rai on his part wants the inquiry to be finished by second ODI as delay in completing the procedure would affect the team strength.&nbsp;

"We should be in no hurry to conduct the inquiry as it would then look like a cover up job being done," Edulji wrote in her email response after Rai wanted the inquiry to be completed quickly as team strength has gone down from 15 to 13.

"We must take a view by the time second ODI gets over as we cannot afford to debilitate team strength due to delinquent behaviour on the part of some player," Rai had written.

While the legal team had advised appointment of an ad-hoc ombudsman for which Rai wants the view of amicus.&nbsp;

However, Edulji wants CoA and office bearers to be part of the inquiry as CEO's presence will be perceived as "bad optics" according to her.

Esha Gupta on Hardik Pandya after sexist comments: 'Who told you he is my friend?'

Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji Friday recommended "suspension till further action" against India players Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul after the BCCI legal team refused to declare their<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173"> outrage-evoking comments on women</a> a violation of the code of conduct.&nbsp;

Edulji had initially suggested a two-match suspension for the duo but referred the matter to the legal cell after CoA chief Vinod Rai agreed with her and recommended the same.&nbsp;

"It is imperative that players be put under suspension till further course of action is decided for this misconduct as was done in case of (BCCI) CEO (Rahul Johri) when he was sent on leave on sexual harassment matter," read Edulji's response to the legal opinion which is in possession of PTI.&nbsp;

"Based on legal opinion and final procedure is laid down to address this issue, will recommend that a communication is sent to concerned players and team immediately," Edulji wrote in response to recommendations from the Board's legal firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.&nbsp;

The legal firm made it clear that the cringe-worthy comments made by Pandya do not fall under the Code of Conduct ambit.&nbsp;

The copy of the legal opinion, in possession of PTI, states: "We feel that present matter doesn't fall under the ambit of Code of Conduct and procedure of Code of Conduct can't be invoked in present circumstances."&nbsp;

The firm said the behaviour in question was neither a criticism of any match or against a player or support staff or match official.&nbsp;

"In any case the procedure set by the BCCI constitution will have primacy over procedure set out under Code of Conduct," it said.&nbsp;

A senior BCCI official seconded Edulji's view and said that there should be suspension pending inquiry.&nbsp;

"It's not just about Code of Conduct but about bringing the institution to disrepute. Just understand that ICC had given maximum sanction of one Test ban to Steve Smith for ball tampering charges as per its code of conduct," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"But Cricket Australia banned them for one year for the disrepute they brought to the game. When you look at their crass comments, look at the larger picture," he added.&nbsp;

If they are suspended pending inquiry, the legal team has recommended the appointment of an ad hoc Ombudsman, which could well mean more trouble for the duo.&nbsp;

With skipper Virat Kohli also distancing himself from the comments, it will now depend on the decision taken by the warring duo of Rai and Edulji based on this legal opinion.

CoA recommends 'suspension pending inquiry' against Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul

Hit hard by an unexpected controversy after the high of the Test triumph, India will look to fine-tune their World Cup preparations in the three-match ODI series against an under-fire Australia, beginning here on Saturday.&nbsp;

On the eve of the opening game, the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">BCCI suspended Hardik Pandya</a> and KL Rahul pending an inquiry for their inappropriate remarks on women during a TV show, effectively ruling them out of the series.&nbsp;

While Pandya was a certainty in the playing XI, an out-of-form Rahul was not in contention to play on Saturday.&nbsp;

Skipper Virat Kohli on Friday condemned the comments made by his two teammates and said the team does not align with the "individual opinions".&nbsp;

"The two concerned players (have) felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude of what's happened," he said in the pre-match press conference.&nbsp;

Rahul was unlikely to get a go owing to both his poor form and the presence of a well-settled opening pair in Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. More significant is Pandya's absence as the all-rounder provides crucial balance to the ODI side with his ability to bowl 10 overs as well as bat in the middle order.&nbsp;

Pandya's absence means that India will have to rejig their attack. Jasprit Bumrah has already been rested for this series, as well as the tour of New Zealand, and this allows the think-tank to conduct one final experimentation with their bowling attack.&nbsp;

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a shoe-in, and thereafter it depends if Kohli wants to go in with a three-man pace attack to compensate for Pandya's loss.&nbsp;

In such a scenario, Mohammed Shami and Khaleel Ahmed are expected to get the nod, as India continue zeroing on the pace quartet for the World Cup squad. There is a sprinkling of grass on the SCG pitch and it could push the Indian skipper to opt for a three-pacer and two-spinner combination.&nbsp;

Kohli also stated that, in Pandya's absence, Ravindra Jadeja would step up as the all-rounder. He would partner up with left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav as India's five-pronged attack, with Kedar Jadhav fulfilling any part-time bowling duties if needed.&nbsp;

With the two openers, and Kohli at number three, the remaining batting line-up picks itself. Jadhav, MS Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu will form the middle order, and there will be keen interest in the latter duo's form here.&nbsp;

Dhoni had an off-colour 2018, managing 275 runs in 20 ODIs at average 25 without a half-century. While this is a meagre return for a batsman of his stature, the worrying aspect is Dhoni's strike-rate of 71.42, which is remarkably lower than his ODI career strike-rate of 87.89.&nbsp;&nbsp;

India brought in Rayudu for the all-important number four role, and since the Asia Cup last September, have given him a long run in the middle order. In this interim, Rayudu scored 392 runs in 11 ODIs in the Asia Cup and against West Indies at average 56 including a hundred and three half-centuries.&nbsp;

While he put in a more consistent showing than any of the other previously tried contenders, this run came in conditions different from those in England.

As such, how Rayudu fares on this twin tour of Australia and New Zealand will be a closer representation of whether the Indian team has finally cracked the number four quandary.&nbsp;

Similar middle-order issues plagued the visitors when they last toured here for an ODI contest, losing 4-1 in January 2016 when Dhoni was still captain. Sharma and Kohli topped the charts with 441 and 381 runs in the five-match series, respectively, while Dhawan also scored 287 runs.&nbsp;

But there were no sizeable contributions from the middle, and only Manish Pandey's fighting hundred in the final ODI had saved India from a 5-0 scoreline.&nbsp;

India's ODI record in Australia is quite poor. Apart from the 1985 World Championship and 2008 CB Series wins, they have lost 35 out of 48 ODIs played against Australia on their home soil.&nbsp;

The absence of David Warner (220 runs in three matches in 2016) and Steve Smith (315 runs in five matches in 2016) might help them again though, as also the absence of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, with the trio rested from this series.&nbsp;

Australia have named their playing eleven ahead of the first ODI, with Nathan Lyon featuring as the lone spinner and Peter Siddle returning to this format for the first time since 2010. Keeper-batsman Alex Carey will open in ODI cricket for the first time, and will pair up with skipper Aaron Finch, while Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb will form the middle order.&nbsp;

The hosts bat deep with Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell lined up at numbers six and seven, albeit their pace attack seems weak on paper. With Siddle returning to the format after eight years, left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff will make his ODI debut on Saturday.&nbsp;

Hit hard by an unexpected controversy after the high of the Test triumph, India will look to fine-tune their World Cup preparations in the three-match ODI series against an under-fire Australia, beginning here on Saturday.

Hit hard by an unexpected controversy after the high of the Test triumph, India will look to fine-tune their World Cup preparations in the three-match ODI series against an under-fire Australia, beginning here on Saturday. On the eve of the opening game, the BCCI suspended Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul pending an inquiry for their inappropriate remarks on women during a TV show, effectively ruling them out of the series. While Pandya was a certainty in the playing XI, an out-of-form Rahul was not in contention to play on Saturday. Skipper Virat Kohli on Friday condemned the comments made by his two teammates and said the team does not align with the "individual opinions". "The two concerned players (have) felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude of what's happened," he said in the pre-match press conference. Rahul was unlikely to get a go owing to both his poor form and the presence of a well-settled opening pair in Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. More significant is Pandya's absence as the all-rounder provides crucial balance to the ODI side with his ability to bowl 10 overs as well as bat in the middle order. Pandya's absence means that India will have to rejig their attack. Jasprit Bumrah has already been rested for this series, as well as the tour of New Zealand, and this allows the think-tank to conduct one final experimentation with their bowling attack. It's time for ODI cricket. Who do you reckon will lift this trophy after the end of the 3rd game.#AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/ESskDamvDj — BCCI (@BCCI) January 11, 2019 × Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a shoe-in, and thereafter it depends if Kohli wants to go in with a three-man pace attack to compensate for Pandya's loss. BCCI sends suspension note to Hardik Pandya over sexist remarks made on TV show

Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul were Friday suspended pending an inquiry into their <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173">comments on women</a> during a TV show, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai told PTI.&nbsp;

The cricketers, who have been in the eye of a storm following their sexist&nbsp;remarks on 'Koffee with Karan', will be returning from Australia where they were to compete in an ODI series starting Saturday.&nbsp;

The two had been omitted from the line-up for the opening match in Sydney.&nbsp;

"Both Pandya and Rahul have been suspended pending an inquiry," Rai said.&nbsp;

"Whether it will be an internal committee of the BCCI or an ad hoc ombudsman who will conduct an inquiry, is yet to be ascertained," the official said.&nbsp;

"The Indian team management will take a call on whether they would want to keep the two with the team or send them back. There is a school of thought that they be kept with the team as the backlash back home could be severe but majority in BCCI brass is against the decision," he added.&nbsp;

"It won't be surprising if two from Vijay Shankar, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey or Rishabh Pant are flown Down Under," the source said.&nbsp;

On Friday, Edulji called for suspension of the two players pending inquiry after the BCCI legal team refused to declare their outrage-evoking comments on women a violation of the code of conduct.&nbsp;

"It is imperative that players be put under suspension till further course of action is decided for this misconduct as was done in case of (BCCI) CEO (Rahul Johri) when he was sent on leave on sexual harassment matter," read Edulji's response to the legal opinion which is in possession of PTI.&nbsp;

Amid controversy, Star's OTT platform removes Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul's 'Koffee With Karan' episode

India skipper Virat Kohli has said that the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173">sexist comments</a> made by his teammates KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya are "inappropriate" from Indian cricket team's the point of view.&nbsp;

He further added, "we definitely, as the Indian cricket team, do not support views like that and that has been communicated."&nbsp;

Team India scripted history in the recently concluded Test series after clinching the series for the first time on Australian soil.&nbsp;

But ahead of the one-day series, India have been hit by an unsavoury off-field controversy due to Pandya and KL Rahul's controversial comments on women on a TV show. The two are facing the prospect of being banned for a couple of matches.&nbsp;

"The two concerned players felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude," Kohli told reporters.

Virat Kohli said he was not aware of any sanctions being handed down but as per the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/coa-recommends-suspension-pending-inquiry-against-hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-189549">latest reports</a>, Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji Friday recommended "suspension till further action" against both the players. Edulji had initially suggested a two-match suspension for the duo but referred the matter to the legal cell after CoA chief Vinod Rai agreed with her and recommended the same.&nbsp;

"From the combination and team balance point of view, yes, you'll have to think about the combination you'll need now," Kohli said.

"We played in India against the West Indies with a finger spinner and a wrist spinner. So it's good that we have someone like Jadeja who can do the all-rounder's role if a scenario like that occurs," Kohli said on the eve of the first ODI against Australia.&nbsp;

"So we are not too stressed as a team (about the Pandya situation) because you'll always have things that you can do in terms of creating that balance for the side. And hence, we keep players who can provide balance with bat and ball as a backup anyway," he added.&nbsp;

"I don't think we will have too much of trouble if we have to change our combinations. We are pretty comfortable as a side and any combination that we go in with," he said.&nbsp;

Watch: Virat Kohli says, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya comments not supported by teammates

The Committee of Administrators chief Vinod Rai Thursday recommended a two-ODI ban on India players Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul for their controversial comments on women in a TV show but fellow COA member Diana Edulji has referred the matter to the BCCI's legal cell.

Pandya's comments, slammed as misogynistic and sexist, drew a lot of flak from all corners, prompting CoA to issue a show cause notice on Wednesday. The all-rounder, in response, said he was sincerely regretful and would not repeat the behaviour.

"I am not convinced with Hardik's explanation and I have recommended a two-match ban for both players. However the final decision will be taken once Diana gives her go ahead," Rai told.

On the show, Pandya boasted about hooking up with multiple women and also how open he has been about it with his parents.

India are scheduled to start a three-match ODI series against Australia from Saturday.

Rahul, the more restrained of the two in the show hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar, has not yet reacted to the social media storm. The two players were given 24 hours to explain themselves by the BCCI.

"Diana has sought legal opinion whether the duo can be banned. So, obviously, a decision will be taken once she gives her nod. As far as I am concerned, the comments were crass, in bad taste and unacceptable," Rai said.

It is learnt that Edulji has also sought the opinion of BCCI acting president CK Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry on the issue.&nbsp;

We all want stability."

News brief: Big stories of the day

It was meant to be a fun, no-holds-barred interaction but cricketer Hardik Pandya, by his own admission, got "carried away".

Appearing on <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173">"Koffee with Karan", hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar, with teammate K L Rahul</a>, Pandya's apparent loose talk on women and his sexuality took many by surprise.&nbsp;

Rahul was relatively restrained but Johar did manage to get him talking about condoms in his pocket as an 18-year-old that led to a dressing down from parents.

Three days after the celebrity chat show aired on Sunday, the two cricketers on Wednesday were issued show cause notices by the BCCI, which took note of the massive outrage on social media and elsewhere.

For most of the show, it was Pandya, who issued an apology for the remarks called sexist and misogynistic, who took it upon himself to say the most outrageous things, mostly on women.&nbsp;

Sample this: "Why don't you ask women's names at nightclubs?" asked Johar when Pandya spoke about his struggle in remembering names of the women he interacts with in parties.

"I like to watch and observe how they move. I'm little from the Black side so I need to see how they move," responded Pandya.

From that to talk on his sex life, Pandya's brashness did not taper down.&nbsp;

"When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, "Main karke aaya hai aaj (I did it today)," was his response to a question on how "cool" he is with his family members.

"At a party my parents asked me acha tera wala (women) kaun sa hai (Which are your women)? I said yeh, yeh, yeh (pointing out women) and they were like waah proud of you beta," he went on to add to stress on the "cool quotient" of his family.

The line of questioning to the two cricketers also seemed excessively focussed on women -- the ones they have dated, those they wish to date and which of them was the more attractive one.&nbsp;

"If you all hit on the same women, then how do you decide?" asked the filmmaker.&nbsp;

Rahul's response was, "up to the woman."

Pandya was more outspoken.&nbsp;

"Nahi nahi aisa kuch nahi hai, talent pe hota hai. Jisko mila woh leke jao (Nothing like that, it's about talent, whoever gets them, takes them)," said the all-rounder with a little shrug of the shoulders.&nbsp;

The 25-year-old later said he got carried away by the "nature of the show" and is currently busy drafting a response to the BCCI show cause notice.

Rahul's comments on the show have not drawn any criticism but the fact that the duo appeared together perhaps also had him caught in the social media storm.&nbsp;

Ironically, Rahul was questioned about his thoughts on social media on the show, whether he thought of it is a blessing or a curse.&nbsp;

"It's a bit of both. It's how you see it," he stated.&nbsp;

To that same question, Pandya, with a wink, responded, "blessing."&nbsp;

Pandya later posted his apology on Twitter.

"After reflecting on my comments on Koffee with Karan, I would like to apologise to everyone concerned who I may have hurt in any way," he said.

"Honestly, I got a bit carried away with the nature of the show. In no way did I mean to disrespect or hurt anyone's sentiments. Respect," the cricketer added.&nbsp;

How Hardik Pandya got 'carried away'; the comments that led to a storm and show cause notice

India's young cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul recently appeared on Bollywood director Karan Johar's show 'Koffee with Karan' and spilled the beans on some of the intriguing secrets.&nbsp;

The cricketing duo, during the fiery 'Rapid-fire round' were asked to name the better batsman between current Indian skipper Virat Kohli and master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

In reply, both picked their captain Kohli without any hesitation.

Ever since Kohli has started scoring runs consistently for his side, the comparisons between him and the Tendulkar have been made. In the last two year, Kohli has even surpassed Tendulkar in several records held by the former. &nbsp;

KL Rahul, Pandya say Kohli 'better batsman' than Tendulkar; Twitterati boils

Indian batsman KL Rahul won hearts by his act of honesty while fielding on the third day of fourth and final Test of India-Australia series at Sydney Cricket Ground.&nbsp;

The incident happened when Australian batsman Marcus Harris survived a close call batting on 24 when a diving KL Rahul narrowly missed a catch.&nbsp;

Rahul immediately signalled that it didn't carry and was bounced. He ensured that the umpires don't waste time going to the third umpire.

On-field umpire&nbsp;Ian Gould appreciated Rahul's honest act and gave him a thumbs up when other players started celebrating the wicket.&nbsp;

Opener Harris quickly found a groove with some crisp shots&nbsp;and&nbsp;went on to score&nbsp;79 off 120.

Australia were left struggling at 236 for a loss of six wickets in their first innings in reply to India's colossal score of 622-7 when bad light stopped the play and early stumps on third day.&nbsp;

Play will start 30 minutes early on Sunday.&nbsp;

When the players walked off the field, Peter Handscomb and Pat Cummins were batting on 28 and 25, respectively, as Australia trailed India's first-innings total by 386 runs.&nbsp;

Unless Australia win, India will claim a first-ever series victory Down Under since they began touring here in 1947-48.&nbsp;

Watch: KL Rahul earns praise from umpire for his honesty in Sydney Test, Twitter applauds

India dropped both their struggling openers and opted for the left-arm spin of Ravindra Jadeja for the Boxing Day test against Australia in their bid to reclaim the lead in the four-match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday.

Openers Lokesh Rahul and Murali Vijay have paid the price for putting together just one double-digit stand at the halfway point of the four-test series, hardly the starts that would help bring India a first test series win Down Under.

Mayank Agarwal will make his test debut on Wednesday with spinning all-rounder Hanuma Vihari joining him in a new-look opening pair.

After their decision not to play a specialist spinner spectacularly backfired in Perth, where Australia levelled the series 1-1, the tourists included Jadeja in the playing XI after first choice Ravichandran Ashwin failed to recover from an abdominal strain.

India also left out paceman Umesh Yadav, while Rohit Sharma returned to bolster the middle order.

Australia have recalled all-rounder Mitchell Marsh at the expense of middle-order batsman Peter Handscomb in the only change to the side who won the Perth test by 146 runs.

"It's a long series, our bowlers have had a really big workload and we feel we're going to need Mitch's bowling at some point," Australia skipper Tim Paine told reporters.

"I'm sure Pete would be upset. I think he's had conversations with the selectors that there's a few things they would like him to work on and Pete is open to that."

The MCG pitch, a year after being rated "poor", sported a green tinge which made India captain Virat Kohli optimistic of a result in the penultimate match of the series.

"As a side you always want a result. The surface looked pretty dry underneath yesterday. There's a good coverage of grass which should keep the surface intact," Kohli told reporters.

"It should have enough for the bowlers to be interested on all days of the test match. Hopefully it's much more lively than it was last time."

Kohli and Paine clashed more than once in the tension-filled Perth test but the Indian captain played down the altercations, saying sparks are bound to fly when two competitive teams meet.

"When both teams are passionate and desperate to win, obviously those things happen on the field. As long as the line is not crossed, you have no issues," said Kohli.

"I'm sure Tim and myself both understand what happened and we definitely don't want to do something unnecessary. We want to lead our team well and play good cricket which the public want to see."

The series will shift to Sydney for the finale beginning on Jan. 3.

Teams:

India: Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

Australia: Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (captain-wicketkeeper), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

I think he's had conversations with the selectors that there's a few things they would like him to work on and Pete is open to that." The MCG pitch, a year after being rated "poor", sported a green tinge which made India captain Virat Kohli optimistic of a result in the penultimate match of the series. "As a side you always want a result. The surface looked pretty dry underneath yesterday. There's a good coverage of grass which should keep the surface intact," Kohli told reporters. "It should have enough for the bowlers to be interested on all days of the test match. Hopefully it's much more lively than it was last time." Kohli and Paine clashed more than once in the tension-filled Perth test but the Indian captain played down the altercations, saying sparks are bound to fly when two competitive teams meet. "When both teams are passionate and desperate to win, obviously those things happen on the field. As long as the line is not crossed, you have no issues," said Kohli. "I'm sure Tim and myself both understand what happened and we definitely don't want to do something unnecessary. We want to lead our team well and play good cricket which the public want to see." The series will shift to Sydney for the finale beginning on Jan. 3. Teams: India: Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah Australia: Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (captain-wicketkeeper), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari to open as Vijay, Rahul dropped for Boxing Day Test

Australia were 170-6&nbsp;after 75&nbsp;overs in reply to India's India's 250 in the second day of the opening Test on Friday in Adelaide.

Travis Head scored a half-century to salvage Australian innings, he is currently batting with&nbsp;Pat Cummins.

Aussies started their innings with a shock as Aaron Finch lost his wicket in the first over after he was spectacularly bowled without scoring on only the third ball he faced.

A beautiful delivery from Ishant Sharma took out his middle and off stumps after getting an inside edge as Finch attempted a drive.

His credentials as an opener again called into question after such poor show.

In muggy and overcast conditions, a slimmed-down Usman Khawaja, returning after knee surgery, joined debutant Marcus Harris to show Finch how it should be done.

He compiled a patient 21, putting aside disrupted preparations after the shock arrest of his brother this week for allegedly framing a love-rival with a fake terror plot.

Harris, who was picked on the back of being the second highest run-scorer in Sheffield Shield this season, looked in good nick and unruffled by the occasion, hitting three fours in a solid 26.
