Elizabeth II, who died last week at the age of 96, had a close relationship with Kenya. She learnt the news of her father's death while on her first visit to the former British colony in 1952. She arrived a princess and departed a queen.

Amin covered all her trips to Kenya as monarch.

A prolific journalist whose heartbreaking images of the Ethiopian famine in 1984 brought global attention to the crisis, Amin shot some three million photographs.

He spent decades leading his company Camerapix -- which supplied video and pictures to several news outlets -- before his tragic death in a plane hijacking in 1996, aged just 53.

His son Salim Amin now runs Camerapix and manages his father's enormous private archive in Nairobi -- filled with photos which have never gone on public display.

Despite being "a child of colonialism" -- born to a South Asian family in Tanzania -- Amin rarely expressed an opinion about the royal family, his son said.

"He couldn't afford to have an opinion because it would affect his job," he told AFP.

But Amin never kowtowed to authority or discriminated between princes and paupers, his son added, describing how a chance meeting in Saudi Arabia with a bodyguard to exiled dictator Idi Amin helped him score an exclusive interview with the so-called Butcher of Uganda.

The queen's death has raised questions about Britain's colonial past and the abuses committed by British authorities across Africa, including during her reign.

In this context, Amin's achievements testify to a triumph against daunting odds.

A self-taught photographer, he often encountered racism in the field, with officials automatically deferring to his white colleagues.

But he also saw his identity as a source of strength.

"He realised the fundamental reason he was successful was because he was local... (because) he knew the continent inside out," his son said.

In 1992, Amin was honoured by the queen and made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

In addition to covering the Ethiopian famine, when his images jolted the world into a huge relief effort, including the massively successful "Live Aid" concert, Amin had a front-row seat to virtually every significant event on the continent.

Last year, Google Arts & Culture established an online archive to catalogue his work in collaboration with the Mohamed Amin Foundation.

Over 6,000 photos have already been uploaded to the digital archive.

King Charles was seen throwing a tantrum over 'leaky' pens during a signing ceremony in Belfast. It was the second time in seven days that the new monarch had a breakdown over pens. Priyanka Sharma tells you why this controversy has erupted at the worst possible time for the royal family.

Gravitas: King Charles throws tantrum over 'leaky' pen

The coffin of Queen Elizabeth has been taken to London. It will now be taken to Buckingham Palace where it will be met by King Charles III and the Queen Consort, Camilla. From Wednesday, members of the public will be able to pay their respects to the Queen's coffin.

WION's Jodie Cohen spoke with Elizabeth Buchanan who has been a senior advisor to Prince Charles, now King, for over 20 years.

Buchanan first served as his adviser on agriculture, the environment, relations with business and the Prince’s Trust before becoming his private secretary in 2005. Most recently, she has been serving as a Trustee of the Prince’s Countryside Fund.

She spoke exclusively with WION’s Jodie Cohen, about her memories of the Queen and expectations for the new King.

WION: You’ve worked closely with the Royal family over a number of years. Can you tell us about your fondest memories of the late Queen Elizabeth?

Buchanan: Thank you Jodie. Yes, I think I probably have two. I was invited to lunch in Buckingham Palace, which the Queen used to hold regularly to bring people of interest together. And there was a wonderful moment when the doors opened and everyone expected the Queen to come to the doors. In fact, came through, the carpet of corgis. And the corgis came first. And when you saw the corgis coming then the queen would follow. They were like the Praetorian Guard of the corgis. So that was one memory I had.

Then another was when I finally did finally leave working for the then Prince of Wales full-time. So I did back in 2008. And I was so privileged to be granted an audience with the Queen. And I remember that, although I've been working for the Prince of Wales for that length of time and I had been with the Queen and in attendance with the Queen so often, but it was just me and her. And I stood outside that door before I went in and my heart was thumping. I could hear it like a brass band. I thought everyone could hear my heart thumping like this and I was so nervous and then I went in and she was so gracious and so kind and said such lovely things. And we had a lovely conversation about cattle which made me very happy because I was actually going back to my family farm and the Queen of course had many cattle, both at Sandringham and Windsor and she loved them dearly. And so we had a very happy conversation about that.

WION: You’re a strong believer in Prince, now King Charles. What qualities do you believe he will bring to the throne?

Buchanan: They are legion Jodie, they're legion. He has had 50 years as Prince of Wales, as a remarkable Prince of Wales travelling this country and the world, realms and the Commonwealth. And he has developed an extraordinary wisdom. He has great leadership skills. And he also has great kindness and compassion which is so crucial right now when we actually all need to be perhaps a little more kind to each other.

WION: As father to the future king William, and his brother Harry, who have come together to pay their respects to the Queen, do you feel King Charles will play a continued unifying role, bringing together members of the Royal family?

Buchanan: Without shadow of a doubt. There is something more and so palpable here in the United Kingdom at the moment. It's the unifying of a nation. And if you look around at the crowds wherever they are you've got all ages, all backgrounds, all colours, all nationalities. It's quite breathtaking. And it's so moving to see it. And his words in his remarkable speech on the Friday night, when he talked about his love for Prince Harry and all that he wanted Prince William, who is now Prince of Wales, to take on the mantle that he did. He is so fond of his children and his grandchildren, deeply fond of them. And I think you saw that expressed when the now Prince of Wales and Duke of Sussex and their wives did that walkabout. It was wonderful and perfect. And that is exactly what the new king will wish to see and want to see with his family but much more widely. He is a remarkably unifying force.

WION: There had been some concern about whether or not some of the British people would accept Charles as King. Do you believe that the reception he’s received puts those concerns to bed now?

Buchanan: Honestly I never had any concerns. Not one. I've worked with him for so many years. I went around the country. To all parts of this country. To all sorts of communities. Urban areas, rural areas. Didn't matter where you were. There was never a second when there wasn't enormous warmth for him. And I was always bemused by this news somehow that there has been a distrust or dislike or something because I never saw it and I rather suspect that it was the media rather choosing that, and I don't wish for one minute to undermine the media, Jodie. But I do think that's what they kind of wanted to see. But I know, when I was out there with him, it was never present. He was so warmly received. And I am not remotely surprised by the outpouring, and it is an outpouring of support, love and respect and admiration for him now.

WION: There has been some speculation about whether republican movements across the Commonwealth might gain in strength. How do you see Commonwealth countries being impacted by the transition to the new King?

Buchanan: I think you have to draw a distinction, Jodie if I may say so. Because the Commonwealth does not have the monarch as the head of state. It's a family of nations who choose to come together. The realms have the king as the head of state. And it is the realms who might have a view about whether they wish that to continue. The view of the monarch would simply be if they'll have democracies. It is entirely up to them. Whatever they choose to do. However, he will always have a deep and abiding affection for those countries. He has visited these countries on many many occasions. And he really does know them and he loves them. He loves being there. He loves being with the people. But it is their choice. It is always their choice. It's what the Queen always made clear. And it is what the King will make clear.

WION: In the past, Prince Charles has expressed opinions, which of course as King, he wouldn’t be allowed to do. At the same time, he’s widely respected for having been decades ahead of others in terms of his environmental awareness, for example. What channels does King Charles have to be able to express his views while maintaining protocol as king?

Buchanan: Well, he surely has been a leader, he has been so prescient about these issues and worked so hard for decades to try to bring them to the attention of the people and to try to make a difference himself. The fact of the matter is, he made it clear on Friday night, things have changed. He said they would change before he became king. First thing he said was, it's not the same anymore. I will have to move away from those causes and charities to which he was so connected. Will he find ways in a way that a monarch finds ways to advise their prime ministers quietly under the radar? I am sure he will do that. He will not do it in any way at all which would undermine the Constitution and that critical relationship between the monarch and the state. It would never happen.

Exclusive: King Charles is a 'remarkably unifying force', says Elizabeth Buchanan

A video has emerged from northern Ireland's Hillsborough Castle in which Britain's King Charles III was seen losing his cool over a leaking pen. The viral video has gained over millions of views.

WION Dispatch | King Charles III frustrated by a leaky pen during signing ceremony

With King Charles III now at the helm of the British monarchy, many commonwealth realms are moving to remove the monarch as their head of state. Also, is the commonwealth itself losing its relevance? Listen in to Molly Gambhir.

Gravitas: More countries to dump the British king as their head of state?

The accession of King Charles III to the throne has caused many changes in UK. The UK had a Queen for seven decades and now has a King. The national anthem has changed from 'God save the Queen' to 'God save the King'. King Charles becoming the monarch has caused major changes in the royal bureaucracy as well.

The Queen's Counsel will now become King's Counsel. There is not one person on this post. About 1900 elite UK lawyers and hundreds of others in the Commonwealth held the rank of 'Queen's Counsel'. Now these men and women will be called 'King's Counsel', a title that was gathering dust since Queen Elizabeth took the throne in 1952.

From now on, these lawyers will use the shorthand KC rather than QC on their letterheads and other materials, according to the Bar Council.

"The change of our names will be a constant reminder that the Queen has gone," said London-based King's Counsel Lord Peter Goldsmith, a partner at law firm Debevoise & Plimpton and who was the United Kingdom's attorney general from 2001 to 2007.

There are practical ramifications as well. Lawyers took to social media soon after the queen's death describing a scramble to update profiles on law firm websites and discussing the cost of new stationery — alongside many references to the disco and funk music group KC and the Sunshine Band.

"It will certainly take some time to get used to 'KC'," said Jeffrey Sullivan, a London-based partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and King's Counsel. "I imagine there will be a few slip ups over the next few months as lawyers, judges and clients adjust to the new title."

The rank is not well known in the US but is a familiar thing in Commonwealth countries like Australia and New Zealand and others. The title is reserved for senior and highly respected lawyers.

Those who hold the title in Britain are informally called "silks" — a reference to the special silk gowns they wear in court along with the traditional wigs sported by many barristers. They are appointed by the Crown following a years-long application process.

King's Counsel enjoys several informal privileges, including front-row seats in court. They also tend to charge more for their services.

Crowds boo anti-monarchy protesters outside UK parliament

King Charles III on Monday made his inaugural address to parliament as king since ascending the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II; it is his first visit as monarch to the parliament.

'Queen Elizabeth II has been a pattern to all princess living,' King Charles III addresses parliament

King Charles the Third on Monday (September 12) addressed the British parliament for the first time as monarch.

"I cannot help but feel the weight of history which surrounds us," the 73-year-old king told lawmakers at Westminster Hall in London, where he received parliament's formal condolences.

In his speech, King Charles vowed to follow the "example of selfless duty" set by his "darling late mother". Charles immediately became British monarch after his mother Queen Elizabeth the Second passed away on Thursday.

Charles then headed to Edinburgh, where he will walk in procession with other senior royals behind his mother's coffin from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where it rested overnight, to St Giles' Cathedral.

In the evening on Monday, King Charles will lead a family vigil in the 12th-century cathedral. The public will be able to pay their respects in the cathedral as well before the coffin is flown to London. The Queen's funeral is slated to take place on September 19.

Prince Harry -- Charles' younger son, who renounced royal duties in 2020 and moved to the United States -- paid tribute to his grandmother, his "guiding compass".

"You are already sorely missed," the 37-year-old Harry said in his first public statement since the queen's death. He added that he and his American wife Meghan "now honour my father in his new role".

Thousands of people, many in tears, had packed the streets of the Scottish capital on Sunday to see the hearse carrying the queen's oak coffin arrive from the Balmoral estate in the Scottish Highlands where she died.

It was a taste of the crowds expected in London when the late monarch lies in state at Westminster Hall. Her coffin will be there for four days from Wednesday, with reports suggesting there could be queues of up to 20 hours for people wishing to pay their respects.

Queen Elizabeth's coffin reaches Edinburgh

The royal cypher of King Charles III has been revealed. He was crowned king upon the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II. Royal cyphers are heraldic monograms that represent a particular country's reigning monarch. Typically, the cypher consists of the initials of the name of the king or the queen. Often it is capped with a crown. For instance, Queen Elizabeth's cypher consisted of E (denoting her name), II, and R, which means 'rex' or 'regina' (or 'king' or 'queen' in Latin). King Charles III's cypher was revealed when he was photographed wearing a tie pin that was shaped as the monogram.
