Both sides went into the final day of the season needing victories to secure the tile but City were down 0-2 with just 30 minutes to go in the match. Matt Cash handed Aston Villa an 0-1 lead and Phillippe Coutinho doubled their lead as things were looking bad for the defending champions.

However, City slammed three goals in just five minutes to complete a superb comeback in front of their home crowd. Ilkay Gundogan started the onslaught with a well-placed goal followed by a deft touch from Rodri to level the scores and it was Gundogan once again who scored the winner.

It was the first time that 13-times European champions Real had conceded two goals so quickly in the Champions League and another looked on the cards. Guardiola could be forgiven for wondering how his team`s high-energy, high-quality football had only produced a 2-1 lead at the break but there was a similar pattern in the second half.

City restored a two-goal advantage eight minutes after the restart with veteran Fernandinho, on as a substitute for the injured John Stones, picking out Foden with a perfectly weighted cross which the England international nodded home.

Two minutes later though Fernandinho was caught out as he allowed Brazilian compatriot Vinicius Jr to break away past him on the touchline. The winger sprinted from the halfway line deep into the area before poking the ball past Ederson to make it 3-2 with an outstanding individual effort.

Yet again City found a way through. Real`s defence hesitated after Oleksandr Zinchenko went down on the edge of the box but Bernardo Silva pounced and beat Thibaut Courtois with a superb drive into the top corner in the 74th minute.

There was more drama to come as City`s Aymeric Laporte was penalised when the ball struck his arm in the area, after glancing off his head, and Benzema converted the penalty with a cheeky `Panenka` chip down the middle eight minutes from time.

Still, City searched for more but substitute Raheem Sterling and Ruben Dias were both unable to make contact with a dangerous ball across the box and then Dias slid in again and was just inches away from a deep Mahrez cross. 
The score was to remain 4-3 but for those who wished this game could have just gone on and on there is another 90 minutes to look forward to next week.

Real`s Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti had similar mixed feelings to Guardiola after an entertaining night and left with some regrets but there was a hint of optimism in his analysis.

Manchester City have a slender lead from the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final after Kevin De Bruyne's 70th-minute goal earned them a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

It was a result City had to eek out against an Atletico side who had clearly travelled to England with the aim of simply denying Pep Guardiola's side opportunities and who failed to produce a single shot on target.

Diego Simeone's outfit had frustrated City throughout the first half with their deep lying defending and reliance on only the occasional counter to threaten the hosts.

City rotated the ball with their usual expertise and made it difficult for Atletico to push out from their deep defensive formation, while never over-committing themselves.

But the Premier League champions were unable to turn their total dominance of possession into clear chances with Aymeric Laporte having one of the best opportunities after the break, but the defender's header from a corner was off target.

Atletico's rare breaks served as a reminder to City that they had to keep some discipline, although when the Spaniards did fashion an opening Marcos Llorente failed to test Ederson.

City kept their shape and moved the ball well but it took the introduction of substitute Phil Foden for the home side to find the missing ingredient.

Foden, who came on with Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus, drew three defenders towards him before splitting the Spanish rearguard with a perfectly weighted pass to De Bruyne who slotted past goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a side-foot finish.

De Bruyne then had space for another attempt on goal, which was well blocked by defender Stefan Savic's outstretched foot.

De Bruyne will get a close look at England on Sunday when Belgium visit Wembley for a Nations League clash.

But the Manchester City midfielder already knows plenty about the players in Gareth Southgate's squad after spending the last five years in the Premier League.

"I think they should be very excited. It is a very young team with a lot of potential and I think they should aim to win the next Euros and World Cup. I think they have that potential," De Bruyne told reporters on Saturday.

"It is going to be a tough test but these are the tests that are necessary for us to see what is going to happen against a big team," De Bruyne said.

Kevin de Bruyne crowned PFA Player of the Year

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne&nbsp;believes the Premier League season will be finished despite the coronavirus pandemic "because the financial aspect is far too important".

"My feeling is that we may be able to train again within two weeks. The government&nbsp;wants to restart football as soon as possible to give people something. I think this season will be finished," De Bruyne told Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

"The financial aspect is far too important in the Premier League. If the season is not finished, it will cause serious problems," he added.

Clubs were presented with the league's "Project Restart" plans at a meeting on Friday and were told the remaining 92 matches of the 2019-2020 season must be played at neutral venues.

De Bruyne also said he was optimistic about City's participation in next season's Champions League. UEFA has banned the club from European competition for the next two years for "serious breaches" of financial fair-play rules.

"The club told us they're going to appeal and that they're almost certain to get their way. I'm waiting to see what happens, but I trust my club," said De Bruyne.

The 28-year-old Belgium international admitted he would be forced to consider his City future if the ban was upheld.

"Once we know more, I will make a decision. Two years without playing in Europe would be long but in the case of one year I might see," he said.&nbsp;

Belgium kept their 100 per cent record intact in Euro 2020 qualifying Group I with a Kevin de Bruyne-inspired 4-0 demolition of a disappointing Scotland side at a subdued Hampden Park on Monday.

Roberto Martinez's side, top of the FIFA rankings, were a class above their hosts as they scored three times before halftime through Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld -- all created by De Bruyne.

The Manchester City craftsman then capped a superb individual display with a clinical finish late on.

Victory left Belgium with 18 points from six games, three more than second-placed Russia, who needed an 89th-minute goal by Mario Fernandes to beat Kazakhstan 1-0.

The top two go through to next year's finals.

Scotland's joint heaviest home defeat means their slender hopes of qualifying from the group are virtually over, although they could still reach the tournament via the Nations League playoffs, with a semi-final place already secured.

"We started a bit iffy but I think after we scored we controlled the game," De Bruyne told Sky Sports.

"Defensively we didn't give much away. It was a really good performance."

Belgium needed only nine minutes to take the lead with their first serious foray into Scottish territory.

"It's difficult to try and sugarcoat a 4-0 defeat," Scotland manager Steve Clarke said.

"I thought we started the game well but we conceded a goal from our free kick. Then we conceded two goals from set plays and you can't afford three soft goals."
