Kerala sports minister V Abdurahiman, on Wednesday (Nov 20), announced that the Argentina football team, featuring legendary Lionel Messi, will visit the state for an international match in 2025. In this regard, the minister stated, "All the financial assistance for organising this high-profile football event will be provided by the merchants of the state."

Notably, Messi -- who has a huge fan following worldwide -- last played in India in 2011, when Argentina faced Venezuela in an international friendly match at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
In an endearing tale from India’s Kerala, a UAE-based billionaire came forward to help a woman from his native place. The Lulu Group chairman MA Yusuff Ali repaid the Rs 8 lakh loan of a Kerala woman, who was evicted from her house due to an unpaid loan.

Ali not only repaid the entire loan amount but also instructed his team back in India to offer her Rs 10 lakh. The story of Sandhya being thrown off her house made local news and moved thousands of people who could identify her plight. It was then, that the story reached Lulu Group’s chairman and he provided Sandhya with assistance.

According to local media, Sandhya and her husband took a loan from a private institution in 2019 for the construction of their home in North Paravur, Kerala. The couple took a loan of Rs 4 lakh from Manappuram Finance, a Kerala-based Non Banking Finance Company (NBFC).

However, in 2021, things didn’t go well between Sandhya and her husband, and the latter left her and their two children. The repayment of the loan stopped thereafter. Gradually, the loan amount spiralled to nearly Rs 8 lakh with interest.

Manappuram Finance started foreclosure proceedings after the repayments stopped. The NBFC said that Sandhya had been given four warnings after loan repayments stopped three years ago.

Recently, when Sandhya returned to her home, she was shell-shocked to find that NBFC officials had entered her house and replaced her locks, officially evicting her and her two children. They did not even allow Sanhdya to take their belongings from inside the house.

The plight of Sandhya and her children, stranded on the road sparked outrage among locals. Her story was soon picked up by local media and reached MA Yusuff Ali, the chairman of Lulu Group, who immediately stepped in to help the family.

The Kerala Assembly on Thursday (Oct 10) passed a resolution, opposing the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal in a significant pushback against the central government.

The resolution was moved by the southern Indian state's parliamentary affairs minister, MB Rajesh on behalf of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was absent due to health reasons.

“It is anti-democratic to treat elections for Parliament, state assemblies, and local self-government bodies merely as an expense. This is an attempt to erode India’s rich cultural, social, and political diversity,” said Rajesh.

“Destroying the federal system enshrined in the Constitution is tantamount to denying the rights of state and local governments, and it also challenges the fundamental rights of the people,” he added.

The support for the motion was unanimous as the opposition, led by Mannarkad MLA N Samsudheen, granted his full support. Samsudheen said the proposal impacted the country's federal structure, adding that it was a threat to state governance and democratic processes.

With the passing of the resolution, Kerala has become the first state to oppose the move. Apart from Kerala, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin - both part of the INDIA bloc, have voiced concerns against the proposal.

It was last month that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government approved the proposal for 'One Nation One Election', which has been a key poll promise by the BJP.

The approval was granted after a report prepared by a high-level panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind was presented before the cabinet.

The panel in March this year recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days.

The approval was granted after a report prepared by a high-level panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind was presented before the cabinet. The panel in March this year recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days. The panel is of the view that holding simultaneous polls will help save resources, spur development and social cohesion. It will also deepen the "foundations of the democratic rubric" and help realise the aspirations of "India that is Bharat". (With inputs from agencies)
