Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won again from Wayanad constituency. BJP also made history by opening account in the southern state for the first time, with actor Suresh Gopi winning the Thrissur seat. CPM, the party of current Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, managed to win only one seat. Kerala took part in the Lok Sabha Elections in the second phase of the polls on Apr 26. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress won most seats here, while the BJP-led NDA didn't win any. Kerala is one of the few states where the Congress remains strong. It is one of the highest voter turnout, so resonating with the people here is significant for both parties.
Monsoon winds have hit the south Indian state of Kerala on Thursday (May 30), two days ahead of the normal rain arrival. The monsoon also reached northeast India six days in advance on the same day.

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said on Wednesday that conditions were extremely favourable for the onset of monsoon season.

"Normal date (for the arrival of Monsoon in the northeast) was 5th June, but it arrived today. In Kerala, it was supposed to be on 1st June, but it arrived here on 30th May. The reason for this is that wind patterns were already established..." said IMD scientist, Dr Naresh Kumar.

Earlier on May 28, the rainy winds reached the South Arabian Sea and the Maldives region.

"The favourable conditions are expected to continue, facilitating further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into more areas of the South Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the Maldives and Comorin region, some parts of the Lakshadweep area, Kerala, additional areas of the Southwest and Central Bay of Bengal, the Northeast Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeastern states over the next three or four days," the IMD said.

Kerala welcomes heavy rains

Kerala was battered by heavy rains on Tuesday (May 28) as pre-monsoon showers disrupted normal life. Streets were inundated in several towns of the state, making it difficult for people to step outside. Severe water-logging was observed in the Kakkanad-Infopark and Aluva-Edappally areas. Heavy rains have been continuing in the Thiruvananthapuram district since Monday night.

Currently, a cyclonic circulation in the middle tropospheric levels is located over south Tamil Nadu and its surrounding areas. This may lead to widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Scattered light to moderate rainfall is also predicted in states like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka over the next seven days.

Above-normal rainfall expected

According to the IMD, above-normal rainfall is expected this monsoon season, lasting from June to September. The seasonal rainfall across the country is predicted to be 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA).

India: Kerala woman dies, nearly 180 hospitalised after eating biryani-like dish at Thrissur restaurant

A group of tourists from Hyderabad were stuck in a perilous situation when their SUV plunged into a stream in the Kuruppanthara area of Kerala's Kottayam district. The incident unfolded on Saturday (May 25) morning as the group, comprising three men and a woman, was en route to Alappuzha, relying solely on Google Maps for navigation.

Fortunately, the tourists emerged unscathed from the ordeal, thanks to the timely intervention of police personnel and local residents who promptly came to their rescue. Even as there was no injuries, their vehicle remained submerged in the stream and efforts were made to retrieve it.

The ill-fated journey took a turn for the worse as heavy rains in Kerala caused water to overflow onto the roads, obscuring its visibility. Tragically, the driver, entrusting complete faith in the navigation app, inadvertently drove the vehicle straight into the water body.

Responding swiftly to the distress call, a nearby police patrolling unit and concerned locals mobilised to assist the stranded tourists. This averted any potential catastrophe.

Earlier mishaps due to Google Maps

This incident is similar to earlier mishaps which highlights the pitfalls of overreliance on navigation technology.

Earlier this year, in Tamil Nadu's Gudalur, another group of travelers fell victim to Google Maps. It led them onto a staircase during their journey back to Karnataka.

Regrettably, the consequences of such misadventures can be dire, as evidenced by a tragic incident last year in Kerala, where two doctors lost their lives after following Google Maps into a river.

Both 29-year olds Advaith and Ajmal were killed in the accident, while three others sustained injuries.

In response to such incidents, Kerala police issued cautionary guidelines, urging travelers to exercise prudence, especially during the monsoon season.

Tragically, the driver, entrusting complete faith in the navigation app, inadvertently drove the vehicle straight into the water body. This averted any potential catastrophe. Earlier mishaps due to Google Maps This incident is similar to earlier mishaps which highlights the pitfalls of overreliance on navigation technology.
A five-year-old girl in Malappuram district of Kerala lost her life as she was afflicted by amoebic meningoencephalitis, which is a rare brain infection, official sources said on Tuesday (May 21). The brain infection was caused by a free-living amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, found in contaminated waters. This is a rare but severe brain infection.

Official sources said that the girl hailed from Moonniyur panchayat. She was undergoing treatment for over a week at the Kozhikode Medical College's Institute of Maternal and Child Health. She was on a ventilator but succumbed on Monday night as she was unresponsive to medication.

However, Naegleria fowleri can also be found in the silt at the bottom of freshwater bodies in considerably lower temperatures.

The report added that Naegleria fowleri can also grow in hot water heaters, pipes and water systems. This includes systems that are treated for public drinking. It hasn't been found in salt water.

Naegleria fowleri infections can occur when water containing the amoeba enters your nose. It can then migrate up the nasal cavity and into the brain. Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) can result from this infection. A PAM infection is nearly always fatal since it destroys brain tissue quickly.

Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around May 31, setting the stage for the four-month rainfall season crucial for India's farm-based economy.

"This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days," the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

"This is not early; it's close to the normal date," IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over the last 150 years, the earliest being May 11, 1918, and the most delayed being June 18, 1972, according to IMD data.

The rain-bearing system arrived in the southern state on June 8 last year, May 29 in 2022, June 3 in 2021 and June 1 in 2020.

Last month, the IMD had forecast above-normal rain in the monsoon season in India with favourable La Nina conditions expected to set in by August-September.

Parts of the country battled brutal heat in April, with maximum temperatures shattering records in several states and severely impacting health and livelihoods.

The crippling heat is straining power grids and drying up water bodies triggering drought-like conditions in parts of the country. A prediction of above-normal monsoonal rainfall, therefore, comes as a huge relief to the fast-developing South Asian nation.

The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water, apart from power generation across the country.

June and July are considered the most important monsoon months for agriculture because most of the sowing for the Kharif crop takes place during this period.

El Nino - the periodic warming of surface waters in the central Pacific Ocean - is associated with weaker monsoon winds and drier conditions in India. La Nina - the antithesis of El Nino- leads to plentiful rainfall during the monsoon season.

The IOD is currently 'neutral' and is expected to turn positive by August.

What is oleander?

Oleander, scientifically known as Nerium oleander or commonly referred to as rosebay, is a plant found across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide. This shrub is known for its ability to withstand drought conditions, making it a popular choice for landscaping and ornamental purposes.

In Kerala, it is called arali or kanaveeram, and often planted along highways and beaches to create natural green barriers.

Even though it's recommended in certain Ayurvedic treatments, oleander's poisonous nature has been acknowledged globally.

Hannon D Langford and Paul J Boor wrote, the plant has been “exploited therapeutically and as an instrument of suicide since antiquity.” (‘Oleander toxicity: an examination of human and animal exposures’ published in the journal Toxicology in 1995).

Two temple boards under the control of the Kerala government, overseeing approximately 2,500 temples across the state, have banned the use of oleander flowers, locally known as arali, in temple offerings. This decision follows the death of a 24-year-old woman who accidentally chewed oleander leaves. Surya Surendran, a 24-year-old nurse, passed away on April 30 as a result of accidental oleander poisoning. Surendran had a new job waiting for her in the UK, and she was supposed to leave on April 28. But on that morning, she ate some leaves from the oleander plant outside her house in Pallipad, Alappuzha. She was using her phone and probably didn't know how dangerous it was to eat those leaves. Shortly afterward, she began to feel unwell and vomited several times. Later that day, she collapsed at Kochi airport and passed away a few days later in the hospital. When questioned about her diet, she informed doctors about consuming oleander leaves and flowers. The forensic surgeon who performed her autopsy alerted the police about oleander poisoning. Additionally, breathing in smoke from burning oleander or swallowing it can make you sick.
