<p>In a unanimous decision, the Kerala Legislative Assembly on Monday (June 24)&nbsp;passed a resolution proposing a constitutional amendment to change the state's official name from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam'.</p>

<p>The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, calls for invoking Article 3 of the Indian Constitution to effectuate this change in the First Schedule.</p>

<p>This is the second time the assembly has passed such a resolution, after the previous one sent to the central government last year faced some technical objections.</p>

<p>Vijayan highlighted that despite 'Keralam' being the commonly used name for the state in the Malayalam language, the official records continue to refer to it as 'Kerala'.</p>

<p>The assembly will now send the resolution to the central government for approval. This move by the Kerala government is part of a longstanding demand to officially recognise the Malayalam name of the state.</p>

However, the saffron party chose him again this time around.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Monsoon winds have hit the south Indian state of Kerala on Thursday (May 30), two days ahead of the normal rain arrival. The monsoon also reached northeast India six days in advance on the same day.</p>

<p>Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said on Wednesday that conditions were extremely favourable for the onset of monsoon season.</p>

<p>&nbsp;"Normal date (for the arrival of Monsoon in the northeast) was 5th June, but it arrived today. In Kerala, it was supposed to be on 1st June, but it arrived here on 30th May. The reason for this is that wind patterns were already established..." said IMD scientist, Dr Naresh Kumar.</p>

<p>Earlier on&nbsp;May 28, the rainy winds&nbsp;reached the South Arabian Sea and the Maldives region.</p>

<p>"The favourable conditions are expected to continue, facilitating further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into more areas of the South Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the Maldives and Comorin region, some parts of the Lakshadweep area, Kerala, additional areas of the Southwest and Central Bay of Bengal, the Northeast Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeastern states over the next three or four days," the IMD said.</p>

<h2><strong>Kerala welcomes heavy rains</strong></h2>

<p>Kerala was battered by heavy rains on Tuesday (May 28) as pre-monsoon showers disrupted normal life. Streets were inundated in several towns of the state, making it difficult for people to step outside. Severe water-logging was observed in the Kakkanad-Infopark and Aluva-Edappally areas. Heavy rains have been continuing in the Thiruvananthapuram district since Monday night.</p>

<p>Currently, a cyclonic circulation in the middle tropospheric levels is located over south Tamil Nadu and its surrounding areas. This may lead to widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.<br />

Scattered light to moderate rainfall is also predicted in states like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka over the next seven days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the IMD, above-normal rainfall is expected this monsoon season, lasting from June to September. The seasonal rainfall across the country is predicted to be 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA).</p>

<p>A woman in Kerala delivered a baby girl on the KSRTC bus on Wednesday (May 29). She started experiencing severe labour pain while riding from Thrissur To Kozhikode ride with her husband. The quick-thinking driver immediately changed course and drove to Amala Hospital.</p>

<p>Upon reaching the hospital it was deduced that 37-year-old Serina was already in an advanced stage of labour. Since she was in a lot of pain, doctors ruled out moving her to the hospital. To ensure safe delivery, doctors and staff of the Amala Hospital rushed with medical equipment to facilitate the process of delivery on the bus.</p>

<p>"The initiation of labour pain had already begun. At that point in time, it was impossible for us to shift her to the emergency department... Then we had to take out the child and cut the (umbilical) cord there itself. We made sure that the baby and the mother were safe..." Dr Yasir Sulaiman of the Amala Hospital told ANI.</p>

<p>A report by Healthy Children revealed that Naegleria fowleri is a type of amoeba that is usually found in warm freshwater and moist soil. It likes heat, thus it is most commonly found in the water during the summer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Naegleria fowleri can also be found in the silt at the bottom of freshwater bodies in considerably lower temperatures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report added that Naegleria fowleri can also grow in hot water heaters, pipes and water systems. This includes systems that are treated for public drinking. It hasn't been found in salt water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Four people died in Kerala as torrential rain lashed several parts of the Indian state. <p>Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around May 31, setting the stage for the four-month rainfall season crucial for India's farm-based economy.</p>

<p>Last month, the IMD had forecast above-normal rain in the monsoon season in India with favourable La Nina&nbsp;conditions expected to set in by August-September.</p>

<p>Parts of the country battled brutal heat in April, with maximum temperatures shattering records in several states and severely impacting health and livelihoods.</p>

<p>The crippling heat is straining power grids and drying up water bodies triggering drought-like conditions in parts of the country. A prediction of above-normal monsoonal rainfall, therefore, comes as a huge relief to the fast-developing South Asian nation.</p>

<p>The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water, apart from power generation across the country.</p>

<p>June and July are considered the most important monsoon months for agriculture because most of the sowing for the Kharif crop takes place during this period.</p>

<p>After a seven-year-long wait and multiple court battles in India, Premakumari, a senior citizen hailing from Kerala, has been able to meet her daughter Nimisha Priya, a nurse who is on death row in a Yemeni Prison.</p>

<p>Priya's India-based lawyer Subhash Chandran confirmed that the mother-daughter duo met at the jail in Sana'a, Yemen, during the afternoon hours of Wednesday. He said that the jail authorities permitted the mother-daughter duo to spend a few hours together and even allowed them to have lunch on the premises.</p>

<p>Since 2017, India strictly prohibited its nationals from travelling to Yemen, owing to the deteriorating internal security situation there. Only those with special permission from the Indian Government can undertake travel to Yemen. For others, it is a punishable offence.</p>

<p>Hopeful of meeting her daughter, who is on death row in a prison in Houthi-controlled Sana'a, Premakumari travelled from Kochi in Kerala to Aden, Yemen, during the weekend. She was accompanied by Samuel Jones, who has been helping the family in getting access to Priya and attempting to get her released from jail. On Monday, April 22, Premakumari and Samuel undertook an overnight car journey from Aden to Sana'a and reached the Houthi-controlled region on Tuesday.</p>

<p>With the support from Indian diplomatic representatives, they completed the formalities that were required to meet Priya, which eventually led to their meeting on Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recalling the emotional reunion, Nimisha Priya's mother&nbsp;Premakumari&nbsp;told WION,&nbsp;"When she first appeared and walked towards us, my daughter Nimisha came wearing a purdah and I couldn't recognise her... then I got up and she came towards me and hugged me and said mummy... I had initially feared that I wouldn't be able to meet her directly..."</p>

<p>"On seeing her, I broke into tears and hugged her... Nimisha offered me hope and courage and asked me not to cry and expressed optimism that things will improve... she was also in tears.."</p>

<p>"We haven't met in so many years and I'm seeing her now in 2024, after getting her married off many years ago... due to the grace of God and Yemeni authorities, she is doing well," she added.</p>

<p>Priya's India-based lawyer Subhash Chandran told WION that they are making attempts to meet the family of Talal (the victim) and plead for mercy. This is a possibility, owing to the concept of 'Diyah' or 'Blood Money', which is practised in Islamic Sharia Law.</p>

<p>'Diyah' is the compensation paid by the perpetrator's family, as demanded by the victim's family. Recently, thousands of people from Kerala and even non-resident Keralites crowdfunded Rs. 34 crore or around USD 4 million&nbsp;to pay 'Diyah' and free Keralite Abdul Rahim, who has been on death row in Saudi Arabia. Rahim is said to have accidentally caused the death of a differently abled child that he was taking care of.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hailing from a poor family in Kerala's Palakkad district, Nimisha went to Yemen in 2008 and worked as a nurse in a Government-run hospital in Sana'a. Eyeing better earning opportunities, she quit her job and started her own clinic.</p>

<p>Priya's lawyer maintains that Priya and another woman had started a clinic with Talal, who later subjected them to physical and mental abuse, and confiscated their passports. In a desperate bid to escape the abuse and flee, it is said that Priya and the Yemeni woman drugged Talal, which is suspected to have led to his death.</p>

<p>The case got further complicated after Talal's mutilated body was found by the authorities in Yemen. Nimisha's lawyer maintains that she was only responsible for drugging the abuser and that she isn't aware of what transpired after her escape bid.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The incident was reported to the police on Monday evening and the women have since been booked under section 153 for deliberate provocation with intent to cause a riot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, the police were reluctant to file a complaint but after a day of protests outside the police station by the members of the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO), they eventually agreed and lodged a complaint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The pro-Palestine posters were put up by the SIO in front of the Jankar Jetty in Kochi. In the video, the women can be seen getting into an argument with the members of the Islamist student outfit after reportedly tearing down the posters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I did it for the Jewish people. You are promoting propaganda and lies,” one of the tourists can be heard saying to the locals in the clip.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Political controversy</strong></h2>

<p>Last year, the former head of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Khaled Mashal, virtually addressed a pro-Palestine rally in Kerala’s Malappuram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The event in question was held around 20 days after Hamas had attacked southern Israel and killed around 1,200 people, according to Israeli officials and took hundreds of hostages with them back to Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the ship MSC Aries was seized near the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman by Iran's Revolutionary Guards on April 13, after which India engaged with Iranian authorities to seek the safety and release of the 17 Indian nationals aboard the vessel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed her safe return in an official statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With the concerted efforts of Indian Mission in Tehran and the Iranian Government, Indian deck cadet Ms. Ann Tessa Joseph from Thrissur, Kerala, who was among the Indian crew members of container vessel MSC Aries, has landed safely at the Cochin International Airport today afteranoon. At the airport, Ms. Joseph was received by the Regional Passport Officer, Cochin," the MEA said in a press release.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as&nbsp;tensions in West Asia have been escalating after the Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria and the retaliatory attacks by Tehran.</p>

The ship was then made to proceed towards Iran … I spoke with my Iranian counterpart, I pressed him, I said there are 17 crew members from India and we are making the point to the Iranian government that these people should be released and they should not be detained."&nbsp;</p>

<p>A wild elephant that fell into a water-filled pit in Kottappady region of Ernakulam district in Kerala on Friday (Apr 12) morning was rescued by the police and the Wildlife Department in the evening on the same day.</p>

<p>Section 144 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was announced in the area for 24 hours to tranquilise and rescue the elephant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Chief Wildlife Warden, as per ANI reports, had permitted to tranquilise the elephant whenever the weather was suitable.</p>

<p>However, the police rescued the animal without using the tranquiliser.</p>

<p>The well, where the elephant fell inside, was located inside a private rubber plantation and did not have any side walls.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the locals took to the streets and staged demonstrations demanding authorities to come up with a permanent solution after multiple incidents of wild animal incursion into the human habitat were reported in the area.</p>
